[RATE ANNOUNCEMENT] 90s East Coast Debuts Rate - 36 Chambers vs Illmatic vs Ready to Die vs Reasonable Doubt

Posted: 01 Nov 2021 01:32 PM PDT

Alright, enough of this Rodeo mumble crap music! It is time to let your inner oldhead out with our second rate all on 90s East Coast Hip-Hop Debuts!

Now, u/adamjm99 did a fantastic job on the first rate, and he asked me to make the second one just as good. I said no, but after days and days of constant messages and bribes, I finally accepted his offer.

Now, if you're like me and hate Adam, this might be your first rate ever which is exciting that you're gonna start off with such classic albums! A rate is where we put a few albums against one another and rate every song from the albums out of 10. You send those scores to me, I crunch the numbers, and in a month's time, I'll reveal to you what songs are the ultimate classics from the classics. It's kinda like ranking Kanye's discography in the Daily Discussion Threads but sexy.

Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) | Wikipedia | Rate Your Music

You know em all, The RZA, The GZA, Ol' Dirty, Raekwon the Chef, Ghostface Killah, Inspecktah Deck, U-God, Masta Killah and M-E-T-H-O-D-M-A-N. Regarded as one of the greatest Hip-Hop groups of all time, the Wu-Tang Clan was know for their high-energy hardcore hip-hop style mixing elements of old soul records with martial arts films. Their debut record took the eyes off Los Angeles and showed the hip-hop world that New York still had more to say.

Nas - Illmatic | Wikipedia | Rate Your Music

If you have every felt that your life is over, just remember Nas wrote and created Illmatic from the ages of 16 to 20. As a teenage boy growing up in New York, Nas just rapped it as he saw it. Discussing drug violence, poverty, and violence, Nas was able to vividly describe the world around him. Though the lyricism of Nas is a major reason why the album is regarded as a classic, so is the production. With production from DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, and Large Professor, the beats sound timeless with their soul samples and hard hitting drums.

The Notorious B.I.G. - Ready To Die | Wikipedia | Rate Your Music

Biggie is seen as one of the biggest what-ifs in Hip-Hop. With only being in the rap game for a short time, Biggie left a major impact on the genre with his classic debut record, Ready to Die. Overseen by P. Diddy, Biggie created a gangsta rap album filled with R&B influence and soul touches while his booming voice did the heavy lifting on the tracks. The way Biggie twisted his rhymes and told his stories was legendary. With the only feature on the entire album being Method Man, it let The Notorious B.I.G. show the world who he was.

Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt | Wikipedia | Rate Your Music

Newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jay-Z's debut album was made from a rags to riches story. After Jay-Z sold drugs to support himself, he declined a record deal to start his own record label to promote his music on his own. On Reasonable Doubt, Jay-Z is able to make gangsta rap sound luxurious thanks to his rapping and the production throughout the project. With his top-notch lyricism, there's a reason why he is considered Brooklyn's Finest.

Rules - READ ALL OF THESE BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR SCORES

Since this is the second rate on r/HHH, I thought it'd be good recap the rules again to be on the safe side.

  1. Listen to every song from the standard versions of all four of these albums and assign a score to them between 1 and 10. If you think you're Pitchfork pretentious, you can add a decimal like 7.3 or 8.1, but only one decimal. no 3.14159265 or 9.85s. Why? because.
  2. You have to listen and rate every song. It's not a rat or a ra. It's a rate, and with that you gotta listen and rate everything. If you don't I will probably cry, but even worse, I won't accept your submission.
  3. Your scores are not a secret. You can scream at the top of the Empire State Building that you gave Tearz a 9. Don't let the universe bring you down!
  4. I stole this one from adam: "You may give ONE song a 0 and ONE song an 11. This is ONE song TOTAL. Please reserve these for your least favorite and most favorite tracks; excessive sabotage ruins rate results and generally makes things less fun."
  5. If upon a mental reflection you want to share your scores, just PM me and I'll totally be down to change up some scores!
  6. Just like the last rate, I will be using the same program as the previous rate to crunch these numbers, so everything must be followed in a super specific way. The link below is formatted perfectly for you, so just use that. easy!

Formatting

This is correct

Fuck Me - Interlude: 10 My dad actually put me onto this song. He said the lyricism in it is beautiful. I have to agree!

These are incorrect:

Fuck Me - Interlude: 10: My dad actually put me onto this song. He said the lyricism in it is beautiful. I have to agree!

Fuck Me - Interlude:10 My dad actually put me onto this song. He said the lyricism in it is beautiful. I have to agree!

Fuck Me - Interlude: 10 (My dad actually put me onto this song. He said the lyricism in it is beautiful. I have to agree!)

You can also comment on the complete albums by adding a colon after the album name and then your comment, but don't leave a score, like so:

Ready to Die: yeah, this was alright.

SUBMIT YOUR SCORES HERE

Scores will be due on November 28th. The reveal will take place between December 3rd and 5th.

[DISCUSSION] Wale - Ambition (10 Years Later)

Posted: 01 Nov 2021 01:05 PM PDT

Wale's 2nd studio album, Ambition, was released November 1, 2011. Following his well-received but commercially underwhelming debut Attention Deficit, which brought him from rap blogs to the major labels, Wale split from Interscope and signed a new deal with Warner & Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group, setting the stage for his 2nd album and bringing him to the label group he would stay with for the next decade-plus of his career.

The album included features from Kid Cudi, Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Big Sean, Jeremih, Lloyd, J. Cole, Ne-Yo and perhaps most famously Miguel on the single "Lotus Flower Bomb," which reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the biggest singles of Wale's career. The album was received fairy well, reaching #2 on the Billboard 200 with 164k sold first-week along with solid review scores, and set the course for Wale's career from MMG onward.

What do you think of the project a decade removed from its release??

[DISCUSSION] A$AP Rocky - Live.Love.A$AP (10 Years Later)

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 03:04 AM PDT

On October 31st 2011, A$AP Rocky's debut mixtape Live.Love.A$AP was released as a free download. It features production from Clams Casino, SpaceGhostPurrp and others and verses from A$AP Mob members and Schoolboy Q.

The mixtape heavily incorporates elements of Dirty South Hip Hop, with trippy soundscapes, chopped n screwed choruses and low-/mid-tempo beats. This stylistic choice was unique at that time, especially since Rocky is from New York. It's also an early release of the Cloud Rap genre, that emerged around that time.

The mixtape received critical acclaim and is widely considered to be Rocky's best project. Especially the ethereal, otherworldly production by Clams Casino has been praised by many critics.

Live.Love.A$AP also served as an important corner stone for internet-based HipHop music and was a big influence on the "Swag Rap" trend that was very popular during the early 2010s.
