My latest project "See You Next Wednesday" just dropped and I wanted to stop by Reddit and answer any questions you may have about it. This album is a very special project for me, and my latest release in 3 years. Some of the artists I collaborated with for SYNW are The Weeknd, Nas, Young Thug, Nav, Moneybag Yo, Gunna, Big Sean and Lil Uzi among others. The visuals for this album are insane. You can head over to my youtube to check them out. The latest two videos are Die For it ft. The Weeknd and Nas and Better Believe ft. The Weeknd and Young Thug. I'm Palestinian born and Canadian raised, and I've been lucky enough to work with the best of the best in music. I'm excited to this with ya'll so let's get into it! Ask Me Anything.

Masked Wolf’s Debut Mixtape Is An ‘Astronomical’ Failure - Mixtape Review

Posted: 10 Sep 2021 09:10 PM PDT

Masked Wolf is your favourite rapper's biggest fan. He might not outwardly admit it, but he needn't do so. The evidence is in the music, which is more often than not a coursing stream of crass stereotypes that swells and swells until originality is hard to come by. Even his claim to fame is becoming less and less of an oddity. The Australian rapper rose to prominence through TikTok exposure with the dated 'Astronaut In The Ocean', a song that obediently followed Eminem's law of syllables over substance and made even more of a mess of several of Kid Cudi's modus operandi. Still, Wolf can't be mistaken for them, he doesn't have the chops or the charisma, but that doesn't stop him from trying to fool you. Be warned: every single song, shtick, and sound on 'Astronomical', the rapper's debut mixtape, comes from someone else's legacy, and it impedes on Masked Wolf's, who isn't entirely deserving of one.

The songs here are translucent, stripped of anything that'd give any credence to Masked Wolf's whirlwind success. He refuses to soften the plagiarism because he can't, without the scaffolding, there would be nothing. 'Astronomical', for example, recalls the scintillating synth work of a Kid Cudi song if Mike Dean had an off day. Elsewhere, the delayed staccato hook of 'Just Names' bites the deranged mayhem of J.I.D's 'NEVER'. The following verses suggest it's a level of thrill Wolf cannot maintain for long. 'Gravity Glidin', on the other hand, is as vacant as the worst of Drake's 'Certified Lover Boy' whereas 'Reflections' recalls the sparse features of 'Nothing Was The Same' without the stoney, self-dissection to compliment it. But all these tributes pale in comparison to the infatuation Wolf reserves for Eminem. There is no place safe from Wolf's overly verbose tongue twisters, not even 'Work', which crams the gory gusto of a 'Kamikaze' song in between wolf-like howls, yes, really.

Performance isn't Masked Wolf's only Achilles heel either. The guy also happens to handle words the same way you might treat a rotten corpse. After all, the prose has been assembled on the same conveyor belt that hurled 'Astronaut In The Ocean', a vague nod to mental health that gets completely lost in its own contradictions, into the world. Through all of his appropriation, Wolf has the audacity to belittle materialism on 'Say So', "Why you worried 'bout the clothes with the labels?", he exclaims with the enthusiasm of a personal trainer. Without the satire that Macklemore wielded to make the same observations a decade ago, Wolf sounds more insecure than the group he's making fun of. Such is usually the case on 'Astronomical' however, namely due to the Drake-isms abound in the rapper's vernacular. On 'Where's Wally' & 'Ain't Gonna Change', Wolf outlines his own 'Started From the Bottom' arc, only to end up fretting about the consequences of being one of the biggest rappers in the world as if it were a chore. These are, by all accounts, nuanced topics that have since been wrapped in the fickle skin Wolf dons for trivialization purposes.

Everything here has. Coated in stasis, 'Astronomical' excels at disappointing by delivering exactly what you expect from it. Across 17 tracks, Wolf never seems to catch onto the fact that the audience is laughing at him, not with him. At least, it's the only possible explanation for a song as self-indulgent as 'Razor's Edge' being here. But still, Wolf pursues, not because he's expected to, but because he's already branded himself as a seminal voice. He mulls about this with a sovereign ego on 'Pandamonium', "They treatin' a veteran like he a rookie", he brashly chants in the rush of Imagine Dragons-styled riffs. He pushes past the point of delusion without ever being told 'no', and it's not fun for anyone. The only one who emerges unscathed from the supreme faults of 'Astronomical' is Kevin Gates who cruises atop nimble synths with a still swagger on 'Thief In The Night'. He is the seasoned, docile role model that Masked Wolf needed sooner, and the only reason to tune in to 'Astronomical'.

Masked Wolf is reaping the benefits of the past decade of hip-hop as a present-day stooge that has little chance of being remembered as much more than a blip in the future. When he isn't posing like goliaths to receive their approval as a sibling would to their senior family member, his efforts rival the weariness of one who has already conquered all and tasted envy-inviting prizes. For them, the result of 'Astronomical', one last effort before capping a glorious career, would not matter. Wolf, on the other hand, is just getting started, and he's already out of ideas.

Astronomical - Masked Wolf - 2/10

Review Thread Rule Revision (READ THIS) <----- ITS ABOUT THE RULES

Posted: 08 Sep 2021 07:24 AM PDT

Background (skip if you want)

On August 30th, we created a review thread for Kanye West's Donda to consolidate all the reviews into one thread. 17 reviews were out a day after the albums release and crowded the front page.

We said this would be done for big releases going forward, starting with Certified Lover Boy.

On September 2nd, we officially announced the review threads in a sticky announcement:

As for other updates, moving forward we will be consolidating reviews for major albums into a singular review thread similar to the one for DONDA. These review threads will be posted 5-7 days after the release of the album or whenever the most popular publications have dropped their reviews (Pitchfork, TheNeedleDrop, Dead End Hip Hop, etc). This will be done to avoid the front page being filled with posts about a single artist for multiple days straight when an extremely popular album comes out. Again, this will only be done for major release from major artists like Drake, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Eminem, Ka, etc. Whether or not a release is major enough to warrant a review megathread will be decided at mod discretion.

We handled the implementation of this review thread poorly. Because Donda's review thread was made 1 day after the release of the album, rather than 5-7 days as we decided in the announcement, we allowed review threads for Pitchfork, The Needle Drop, and The New York Times.

When The Needle Drop's review of Certified Lover Boy was released on September 6th, it was removed in adherence with how the review rule was described in the announcement, along with the Pitchfork review that came later that night.

A user took it upon themselves to create a review thread. People expressed their rage at the Needle Drop review being denied it's own thread, which they perceived as being in service of defending Drake. Comments in the thread were removed to keep it focused on the reviews– including The Needle Drop's. And users were asked to express their criticism of moderating decisions to the replies of the stickied comment and the Daily Discussion thread.

We are aware that this was poorly implemented and the allowing of some Donda review threads left people confused. A sticky in the Pitchfork review thread confusing seemed to indicate that Pitchfork, the Needle Drop, and Dead End Hip Hop would be get their own posts– contradicting the announcement.

We have decided to revise the rule:

Revised Rule: Carve Out for Your Favs

For big releases (Drake, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Eminem):

  • Review thread with all reviews will be posted 5 days after release during the day (typically falling on Wednesday)
  • Reviews will be removed until the review thread
  • Reviews published after the thread will be allowed
  • However: because the community really loves The Needle Drop, Pitchfork and Dead End Hip Hop: we will allow these reviews to have their own threads

What warrants a big release with be decided at moderator discretion and take into account not only popularity on Billboard, but on this subreddit.

The implementation of this will start this week with Baby Keem's The Melodic Blue. On Wednesday of next week, a thread will be posted with all the reviews of The Melodic Blue. Reviews of The Melodic Blue NOT by The Needle Drop, Pitchfork or Dead End Hip Hop will be removed until Wednesday. All reviews from after Wednesday will be allowed.

Feedback Questions

We understand people's issues with the specific implementation of the rule, but moving forward, we're looking for feedback on implementing rules. We are aware of the specific screw-ups with this implementation, but broadly for future rule announcements:

  1. Rule Announcements: How can we announce the new rules in a way that people will see them? There were no complaints in the announcement thread, but we were told by people that they ignored the thread. How do we effectively convey this information to you?
  2. Community input: There were some broad suggestions that rules get community input. Suggestions on implementing this? Please don't be vague we can't take action on vague suggestions.

For review threads:

  1. We want people to engage with the content of reviews. What can we do to encourage people to do that? Is it even worth trying?
  2. The only review threads that get any activity 99% of the time are Pitchfork and The Needle Drop. How do we encourage people to engage with other reviews? What would motivate you to engage with a review that isn't by Pitchfork or The Needle Drop? Or it worth trying?
  3. What do you think about existing review thread rules, such as disallowing the score in the title and the 140 character requirement?
  4. Do you have any of your own ideas?

[DISCUSSION] Pop Smoke - Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon (One Year Later)

Posted: 08 Sep 2021 02:37 PM PDT

On July 3rd 2020 Pop Smoke's posthumous debut album was released. Meant to showcase Pop's talent it was shelved after his tragic death in Feburary 2020. The album was released after 50 cent offered to executive produce the album. SFTS sold 251k first week charting at #1 on the Billboard 200 and showcased a NY drill pioneer's emerging talent.

Did you like the project?

Did you think it was respectful to Pop?

What are your favorite songs? Mine is The Woo.

Did you hate any songs?

Do you still listen to this project?

How does this compare to Faith?
