| Review Thread Rule Revision (READ THIS) <----- ITS ABOUT THE RULES Posted: 08 Sep 2021 07:24 AM PDT Background (skip if you want) On August 30th, we created a review thread for Kanye West's Donda to consolidate all the reviews into one thread. 17 reviews were out a day after the albums release and crowded the front page. We said this would be done for big releases going forward, starting with Certified Lover Boy. On September 2nd, we officially announced the review threads in a sticky announcement: As for other updates, moving forward we will be consolidating reviews for major albums into a singular review thread similar to the one for DONDA. These review threads will be posted 5-7 days after the release of the album or whenever the most popular publications have dropped their reviews (Pitchfork, TheNeedleDrop, Dead End Hip Hop, etc). This will be done to avoid the front page being filled with posts about a single artist for multiple days straight when an extremely popular album comes out. Again, this will only be done for major release from major artists like Drake, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Eminem, Ka, etc. Whether or not a release is major enough to warrant a review megathread will be decided at mod discretion. We handled the implementation of this review thread poorly. Because Donda's review thread was made 1 day after the release of the album, rather than 5-7 days as we decided in the announcement, we allowed review threads for Pitchfork, The Needle Drop, and The New York Times. When The Needle Drop's review of Certified Lover Boy was released on September 6th, it was removed in adherence with how the review rule was described in the announcement, along with the Pitchfork review that came later that night. A user took it upon themselves to create a review thread. People expressed their rage at the Needle Drop review being denied it's own thread, which they perceived as being in service of defending Drake. Comments in the thread were removed to keep it focused on the reviews– including The Needle Drop's. And users were asked to express their criticism of moderating decisions to the replies of the stickied comment and the Daily Discussion thread. We are aware that this was poorly implemented and the allowing of some Donda review threads left people confused. A sticky in the Pitchfork review thread confusing seemed to indicate that Pitchfork, the Needle Drop, and Dead End Hip Hop would be get their own posts– contradicting the announcement. We have decided to revise the rule:
Revised Rule: Carve Out for Your Favs For big releases (Drake, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Eminem): - Review thread with all reviews will be posted 5 days after release during the day (typically falling on Wednesday)
- Reviews will be removed until the review thread
- Reviews published after the thread will be allowed
- However: because the community really loves The Needle Drop, Pitchfork and Dead End Hip Hop: we will allow these reviews to have their own threads
What warrants a big release with be decided at moderator discretion and take into account not only popularity on Billboard, but on this subreddit. The implementation of this will start this week with Baby Keem's The Melodic Blue. On Wednesday of next week, a thread will be posted with all the reviews of The Melodic Blue. Reviews of The Melodic Blue NOT by The Needle Drop, Pitchfork or Dead End Hip Hop will be removed until Wednesday. All reviews from after Wednesday will be allowed.
Feedback Questions We understand people's issues with the specific implementation of the rule, but moving forward, we're looking for feedback on implementing rules. We are aware of the specific screw-ups with this implementation, but broadly for future rule announcements: - Rule Announcements: How can we announce the new rules in a way that people will see them? There were no complaints in the announcement thread, but we were told by people that they ignored the thread. How do we effectively convey this information to you?
- Community input: There were some broad suggestions that rules get community input. Suggestions on implementing this? Please don't be vague we can't take action on vague suggestions.
For review threads: - We want people to engage with the content of reviews. What can we do to encourage people to do that? Is it even worth trying?
- The only review threads that get any activity 99% of the time are Pitchfork and The Needle Drop. How do we encourage people to engage with other reviews? What would motivate you to engage with a review that isn't by Pitchfork or The Needle Drop? Or it worth trying?
- What do you think about existing review thread rules, such as disallowing the score in the title and the 140 character requirement?
