Press Release:

One happy thing to be grateful for during otherwise trying times is finally getting to hear and enjoy new work by a man whose music is familiar to millions even if his name is less so. Indeed, Gil Scott-Heron continues to cast such a wide shadow that even many of his biggest fans often seem to forget that there's another name next to his on the bulk of his albums, the name of a man teamed up with Gil as a teenager and proceeded to ride out the decade as his writing partner, keyboardist, arranger, and bandleader for their Midnight Band. That man's name is Brian Jackson.

His considerable backlog of unheard material reveals a still-energetic and still-vital icon of the music wing of the Black Liberation movement. Prepare to hear from a musician whose work has contributed to the enhancement of all our lives in some form or another with the latest installment of the Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge's Jazz Is Dead series.

"Brian Jackson is the first album we recorded for Jazz Is Dead. He set the tone for the entire label," reflects Younge. "He turned our aspirations global. We never knew what this could all be, but with his inspirational character and musicianship, he led us on the right path. We are forever indebted to this icon."

Brian Jackson JID008, available August 6, is the first full album released by the great man in 20 years (with the exception of Evolutionary Minded, an homage to Gil released eight years ago) and it's a testament to his multifaceted talents that while there are moments throughout that hint at his game-changing history and track record, for the most part it reveals a musician who pulls from lessons garnered over a 50+ year career only to keep his eyes firmly fixed on the future. "When we got together, the sounds flowed effortlessly," recalls Jackson.

"As Dru, Adrian, Adam and I were charting a course for Jazz Is Dead from outside of our imaginations to a destination of wonder and possibilities, in walks legend and fellow Brooklynite Brian Jackson," says Shaheed Muhammad. "We let the impact be our guide, fully capturing the moment in this recording. Brian's smile and free flowing style takes us to the place where groove meets chill. This is the dawning of JID recordings."

Brian Jackson JID008 serves as a masterclass in unbridled and open-minded creativity, no different from what Jackson did half a century ago. The ease and comfort with which his ideas integrate with those of musicians a generation younger than him bears this out. To listen to this album is to hear a hot up-and-coming musician who also happens to be a major jazz-funk legend.

Jackson really earned the equal billing on that string of classic Arista albums he and Gil made together because he went a long way towards keeping the musical ship of Gil Scott-Heron, Brian Jackson, and the Midnight Band's musical ship afloat. Many of the classic tracks on those albums bear Jackson's name alongside Gil's in the writing credits and his distinctive musical signature brought all of it to life. Jackson has kept a considerably lower profile over the last few decades since those halcyon days but those fortunate enough to have caught him live playing and singing the GSH/BJ classics he was so central in creating (as well as tantalizing glimpses of newer material) know that his music, chops, wisdom, and charm are fully intact and in fact even better than ever, like a bottle of fine jazz-funk wine.

"It wasn't until Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Adrian Younge and I joyfully completed the sessions at Linear Labs in February of 2019 that I remembered my favorite song of my former writing partner Gil Scott-Heron's post-70s tracks, 'Don't Give Up,' was produced by Ali," remembers Jackson. "Adrian had already made an impression on me for his soundtrack work on Black Dynamite, Luke Cage and his authentic '70s music feel."

"Nancy Wilson" is an elegiac tribute to the recently departed jazz-R&B icon, hinging on the combination of Jackson's magical flute sound and a simple-yet enchanting piano motif playing against a funky rimshot/kick drum pattern. Even devoid of lyrics, the sincerity of this tribute to the already much-missed chanteuse comes through loud and clear in every bar of this wonderful and effortlessly melodic track.

A dramatic Rhodes intro from one of the true masters of the instrument, soon joined by drums, bass and mini-Moog, heralds "Mars Walk," which is a kind of sonic equivalent of bouncing around the surface of our neighboring Red Planet in a space suit. Think of this track as a jazz-funk Rover.

"'What's this,' I inquired as I opened the case to the alto flute Adrian had laying around the studio amid the myriad other instruments he had collected," recalls Jackson. "Within minutes, I was recording with it. A few more tracks in, and I had jumped on the Minimoog to add some melodies and piano to tracks Adrian and Ali had penned. The next day, we went in and wrote a song together on the spot, with Malachi Morehead holding the rhythm down tight.

The first several bars of "Ethiopian Sunshower" simultaneously recall the essence of both post-bop and early fusion, but they quickly give way to a delicious Ethio-Jazz-inspired Afro groove on which Jackson's flute once again makes an appearance in the role of a funky snake charmer over percolating percussion. It all adds up to an album highlight sure to inspire many remixes.

"Bain De Minuit" was inspired by Jackson's wife, who happens to be French, and is the album's longest and most reflective track, reminiscent of some of the mellow-yet-deep classics he wrote or co-wrote with Gil such as "A Very Precious Time" or "A Prayer for Everybody." The influence that their recently departed close collaborator Malcolm Cecil had on Jackson's music can also be felt in some of the synth tones heard throughout the track.

"If for some reason the respect and love we have for each other is not evident in the sounds here, let me tell it straight," declares Jackson. "From the first minute, we could feel that our musical roots made us all a part of the same tree. This album is the offshoot of that notion. It is my hope these sounds also nourish the roots of your spirit."

To me, the title sounds like a book—not a rap album. I'm really writing my life. The world's on fire, but nobody cares. It's an observation. The House Is Burning, so are you going to run in there and get your trophy from a couple of years ago and those shoes you like? Or, are you going to move on? Can you grow for yourself? Am I going to sacrifice myself for some old shit? No, I'm going to move on.

Music is where I go to express myself. It's what I do to close a chapter. You know what's crazy? I'm not even ashamed to say it...I really think my albums aren't different from each other. Eventually, one of my albums will become a classic. I just love this shit. It's me.

FULL TEXT:

Social media moves so fast that people want to demolish you before you even have the opportunity to grow, educate, and learn from your mistakes. As a man who has had to make his own way from very difficult circumstances, having people I know publicly working against me– knowing that what I needed was education on these topics and guidance– has been challenging. I appreciate the many people who came to me with kindness, who reached out to me privately to offer wisdom, education, and resources. That's what I needed and it was received.

I want to apologize to the LGBTQ+ community for the hurtful and triggering comments I made. Again, I apologize for my misinformed comments about HIV/AIDS and I know education on this is important. Love to all. God bless.

Street Named After MF DOOM Unveiled In Long Beach, NY (Renamed to KMD – MF DOOM Way)

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 07:35 AM PDT

https://www.stereogum.com/2155914/street-named-after-mf-doom-unveiled-in-long-beach/news/

A street in Long Beach, New York, where MF DOOM grew up, has been renamed in honor of late rap legend. KMD – MF DOOM Way, named after the MC and his early group with his younger brother Subroc, stretches one block between Riverside Boulevard and Long Beach Road on East Hudson Street. The street sign was officially unveiled in a ceremony on Saturday.

The City Council of Long Beach approved the dedication following a successful petition spearheaded by Dr. Patrick Graham, a public and social sector leader and former schoolmate of DOOM. "His hip-hop lyricism represents some of the culture's best linguistic metaphors, garnering intergenerational and interracial admiration," Graham said in a statement. "His life and art symbolize the resilience we need in our present context."

"MF DOOM left an indelible mark on the music industry and on the lives of people across the globe," added Long Beach City Manager Donna Gayden. "Long Beach is proud to bestow this honor in his memory and proud that he [once] called our City home."

Theory: Lloyd Banks subbed Roc Marci on COTI

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:26 PM PDT

Ok guys so I have been thinking about this and wanting to have a discussion as I have not seen anyone mention it.

On the song Early Exit [#4] Roc Marci says: "I admit I started a renaissance, got all these artists on the same shit I'm on, I should talk at a seminar."

Ok cool, we hear you Roc, but I don't know if Lloyd liked that… Roc definitely got people to spit bars on dope beats without commercialized hooks and whatnot he deserves his credit but Banks been about that too. Even as a mainstream artist he always made that dark grimey bar heavy rap which I think was his point in what I believe to be his response

On the next song Formaldehyde feat Benny the Butcher [#5] Lloyd Banks says: "You teachin who, bout what? Hang my picture up at ya seminars"

Now it could be a coincidence but does not seem likely. My guess is Roc sent his vocals and Banks didn't like that bar, thus his reply.

Thoughts?

R&B Artist Spotlight: JMSN

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 01:06 PM PDT

Spotify
Apple Music
Instagram
Youtube Channel

Music Style: Dark Alternative R&B or Neo Soul taking influence from Funk, Electronic, Jazz, Blues, with a Retro Soul feel.

Christian Berishaj, otherwise known as JMSN, probably has one of the most interesting musical direction in R&B music. Around the late 2000's, JMSN was under the name Christian TV who made this pop tune called 1, 2, 3 Turn Around that might be familiar to many of you. Under the moniker Christian TV, he's also dropped some 2010 EDM pop tracks like I'm In Love, Love 2 Baby, When She Turns 18, Drop Dead Gorgeous Jaimie. A few years later, he starter to go under the name we all know and love, JMSN. Imagine going from 2010 electro EDM dance-pop, to Dark Weeknd-inspired Alternative R&B, to 90's influenced R&B, and finally ending at Neo Soul influenced by 80's music. That is quite the transition in music. JMSN has also done background vocals on Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe, Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst, Real, The Art of Peer Pressure from Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d city and features on projects such as, Joey Fatts' Still Cutthroat, The Game's Jesus's Piece, and Ab-Soul's These Days.

JMSN's music tends to fall under the Alternative R&B and Neo Soul umbrellas. What's interesting about his dark Alternative R&B music is that unlike the moody, electronic Future Garage influenced sound present in The Weeknd's, BANKS', or Black Atlass' music; JMSN music uses more live instrumentation. To be specific, JMSN's music would often feature strings, marching sounds, or guitar driven melodies. All of these various qualities can be seen in songs like Love & Pain, Fallin', and Somethin'. There are still cases were JMSN's music would follow the similar characteristics present in the artists' mentioned like in Fire, Nunca se Sabra, Wasted Love, or Waves. Even during his dark Alt R&B days, JMSN still had some stuff leaning into Contemporary R&B territory like in Bout It and All Apologies. He even channels 90's R&B like in Delay, Score, and Street Sweeper. On his self-titled album, he veered into Neo Soul territory on the song Price, which would happen to be a good indicator of what direction he planned on going into. JMSN would cross into full Neo Soul with a strong retro feel. This involved him using more brass instrumentation (F*ck U, Funk Outta Here), elements from blues music (Cruel Intentions, Good Ol' Case of the Blues, Slide), Reggae (Hypnotized), Psychedelic Soul (Talk is Cheap, So Badly), Disco (Inferno), New Jack Swing (Drama), Funk grooves (Get 2 B Erotic, Levy, So Badly), and a heavier Jazz influence (Angel, Slowly, Hypnotized).

What I like about JMSN is that he not only writes and produces his own stuff, he also engineers and mixes it as well. Basically, whenever you hear a JMSN project, nearly everything is done by him. He also directs his own music videos. The best way to describe JMSN vocals is Justin Timberlake going soulful and being good at it. No shade to JT, but his vocals aren't the best by R&B standards. As for JMSN, he didn't really utilize his full vocal ability until he went Neo Soul. For a good idea on his vocals, listen to this Sofar London performance of Drinkin'. Do you see how much he's going off vocally? That alone show what he can do. When JMSN sings, he takes a soulful crooner approach as opposed to the regular crooner approach common in many male R&B singers. The soulful crooner approach often uses a certain type soulful screaming as seen in this Funkadelic example. JMSN does these soulful screams in Talk is Cheap, Inferno, and a couple other songs. Overall, JMSN not only knows his voice, he uses it really well.

If you like Dark Weeknd inspired Alternative R&B, listen to †Priscilla† or †Pllajë†. For something with a 90's R&B influence, listen to JMSN [The Blue Album]. For something more akin to Jazzy Neo Soul, listen to It Is or Whatever Makes U Happy. For Neo Soul with a big 80's influence, listen to Velvet.

Some of my favorite JMSN songs: Jameson, Do U Remember The Time, Something, Fire, Runaway, Girl (I Used to Know), Nunca se Sabra, Adá, Walk Away, Thing U Miss, Fool, Bout It, Ends (Money), Need U, Score, Price, It Is, Power, Fuck U, Cruel Intentions, Funk Outta Here, Hypnotized, Fantasize, Be a Man Pt. II, Drinkin', Always Somethin', Slide, Slowly, Angel, Levi, Talk Is Cheap, Pose, Inferno, Get 2 B Erotic, Real Thing, Explicit, So Badly, Mind Playin' Tricks, Love 2 U

Here's a Spotify playlist for JMSN.

Here are some good performances: Soulection Radio Sessions, COLORS Performance, Live North Hollywood

Next R&B Artist Spotlight: Naia Izumi
