[DISCUSSION] Big Sean & Jhené Aiko - Twenty88 (5 Years Later)

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 03:10 PM PDT

Twenty88 (stylized as TWENTY88) is the first studio album by American hip hop duo Twenty88 (composed of rapper Big Sean and R&B singer-songwriter Jhené Aiko). It was released on April 1, 2016, by Def Jam Recordings with licensing to GOOD Music and ARTium Recordings. The album features guest appearances from the R&B group K-Ci & JoJo, and recording artist and producer Detail. This project includes production from Detail, KeY Wane, Tommy Brown, Sidney Swift, Cam O'bi, Steve Lacy, Flippa and Jproof. The album peaked at number five on the Billboard 200.

On September 17, 2020, Big Sean revealed that a sequel album is "in the works". A track attributed to the project appeared on Sean's fifth album, Detroit 2 (2020).

Background

On March 28, 2016, Big Sean and Jhené Aiko announced that they were forming a duo, called Twenty88. The Los Angeles singer and the Detroit rapper previously collaborated on the songs "Beware" (with Lil Wayne) from Sean's second album Hall of Fame (2013), as well as "I Know" from Sean's third album Dark Sky Paradise (2015). According to a press release from Tidal, the album tells the story of the highs and lows of a relationship, with insights into conflict, memories, love, and sex.

On March 29, Sean and Aiko appeared together on the cover of Flaunt to promote the album, Twenty88. For the cover story, they talked about the origin of the duo Twenty88, and their vision for the album. Aiko stated: "Music now doesn't really cater to the feelings of a real relationship. It's all about trapping and bragging. I feel like this project is something that's needed right now. Especially a whole project is just good for people to see. That duality is a perfect combination. It's a 70's aesthetic, but we're in the future." They drew from various influences: Blaxploitation films, James Bond, as well as Ex Machina.

In 2020, Sean talked about how the labels did not back the project despite the chemistry with Aiko and already popular songs they had together. Tidal essentially provided the backing for the project so that Sean and Aiko would not pay for it themselves.

Recording and production

On March 28, 2016, it was revealed that the album would feature the productions from Key Wane, Detail and Tommy Brown. Big Sean and Aiko explained what fans could expect on the project. According to Uproxx, the album conjures 90s R&B and 70s experimental rock and soul. It also mixes neo-soul, ambient beats, and trap drums courtesy of producers like Da Internz. As a whole, Twenty88 is a departure from each artist's individual sounds. "It's a wide range. It gets turned up, then it gets melodic, then it gets vibed out. It touches all these things, but it sounds very cohesive. We've created another world. Both me and Sean are super into fantasy-driven movies and so combining stuff like robots and sex, that pretty much sums us up. Robots are sexy as shit. We've created these characters that are extensions of ourselves, it's highly sexual." In the interview with Flaunt, it was revealed that K-Ci & JoJo would be featured on the song, "Two-Minute Warning". The magazine described the song as, "the most sexually explicit song" on the album.

Top Comments in Release Thread

few songs in now. Good vibe. Really like Big Sean's vibe here. killing it so far. beat on the second song is great. first song was pretty good, but wasn't too big on jhene's verse. like her additions to the hooks, and her verse on the 2nd song is better. not bad so far. definitely enjoyable. Third song is alright - good back and forth for a bit. not groundbreaking or anything, but good chill music. and big sean is really shinin' here. think he gets a bit too much hate sometimes. sure, he's not nas or anything (not even in the top tier of modern rappers, imo), but he has his place and is a really fun rapper, and it seems these beats and songs are right up his alley. definitely enjoying it thus far. on the 4th song.

Pretty great production and great chemistry between the two. But what I like the most is how realistically they depicted a relationship with all of its ups and downs. The times when it feels so good, sad, frustrating. The times when you feel so full of doubt and the times when you look back and realize how badly you want to be with this person.

RYM Review

Big Sean Ruins This
The internet is a beautiful thing cause I know I can find a Jhené only edit in like 4 minutes.

Interview with runnïng.fïles, the enigmatic duo working with BROCKHAMPTON

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 03:35 PM PDT

Recently, one of the most anticipated albums of this year, "ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT NEW MACHINE" by BROCKHAMPTON, got released. The group led by Kevin Abstract, in an attempt to respond to a tragedy experienced by one of the group members, gathered with the intent to create something new. Their latest release is not only a result of their friendship, but also the traumatic experience of Joba, whose father committed suicide.

Somewhere on the path of album creation, BROCKHAMTPON met the enigmatic duo — runnïng.fïles. The result of this cooperation - an artistic work was created to complement this album. I talked with them about the project, but also their life, the future and running... marathons in our minds, and also why we are running and where we are heading to. This is how a fascinating interview was created. You can watch it here and meet the runners yourself.

Rules

Artists qualify if they're never gotten 50 or more upvotes on /r/HipHopHeads (counting features)

Formatting:

>Artist - Title

>Description: no character minimum but some things that might be good to include: where the rapper is from, what subgenres they might fall into, have cosigns they might have, what their influences are, who they sound like.

Example:

>Aaron May - Let Go

>18 year old Houston Rapper, biggest influences are J Cole and Nas.

Heavily recommended: If you post a song, listen to another song and comment on it. Otherwise this thing doesn't really work that well.

Feel free to add any feedback on what could make these threads better.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why is X artist higher than Y artist on the 200 chart, even though X artist sold less?

A: This is because of a discrepancy between Billboard's ranking and the ranking from the website that the sales data is scraped from

Q: Where do you get the sales data from?

A: https://hitsdailydouble.com/sales_plus_streaming

Q: What does "err" mean on the 200 chart?

A: If you are seeing "err", that means that the bot I use to gather chart data couldn't identify sales data for a particular album because of a difference in album naming between Billboard and HitsDailyDouble

[DISCUSSION] Current Statistical Leaders (Jay-Z's Lyrical Exercise)

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 06:00 AM PDT

At the end of the classic 2001 album The Blueprint (as a hidden track), Jay-Z boasts he's the leader of 6 statistical categories right now in Hip Hop during a song called Lyrical Exercise. Used in the intro below:

Y'all niggas can't be serious right now

I'm the all time heavy weight champion of flowers

I'm leading the league in at least six statistical categories right now

Best flow, most consistent, realest stories

Most charisma, I set the most trends

And my interviews are hotter, holla

If rap had categories like sports, which artists would be leading in certain categories?

R&B Artist Spotlight: Giveon

Music Style: R&B with influences from retro soul and jazz

You all may probably recognize Giveon from two things. His feature on Chicago Freestyle (Drake's Dark Lane Demo Tapes) or Peaches (Justin Bieber's Justice). However, most of you guys would probably recognize him from Chicago Freestyle because that's how he rose to prominence. The mere fact that he's a new artist and already has two collabs with huge artists under his belt just shows that Giveon might the be next big thing in R&B music.

Despite only having 2 EP's out so far, Giveon has been able to somewhat establish some potential directions where he wants his sound to go. He's shown that he can go retro soul (Like I Want You, Still Your Best), more guitar driven (Vanish, The Beach), old school (Favorite Mistake), piano based (When it's all Said and Done, All to Me, Stuck on You, Heartbreak Anniversary), or Neo Soul adjacent (Last Time, World We Created). Giveon even showed that he can work with a more hip hop sound (Chicago Freestyle) or something more of the pop side (Peaches). So, it will interesting to see which direction Giveon will go in for his debut album.

I would say the biggest standout about Giveon is his singing voice. Unlike a lot of male R&B singers in the game right now, Giveon is a baritone. Most male R&B acts are often tenors, so seeing a baritone is always a nice change of pace. Some more baritones is R&B music are John Legend, Jack Garratt, Aloe Blacc, James Blake, etc. I think Giveon could open the door to seeing more Baritone in R&B or in just music in general. What's great about Giveon is that he knows how to use his voice. In fact check out his cover of Miguel's Adorn. When singing, Giveon takes a soulful approach as opposed to a crooning. His voice gives off a more retro soul vibe, as if Giveon is channeling 60's to 70's soul music. Check out this little performance of his song Still Your Best. Some of Giveon's best vocals can be seen on Heartbreak Anniversary, Vanish, Last Time, Stuck on You, and Like I Want You. Lyrically, Giveon music deals with the topics of relationships. From everything to the beginning, the break up, and moving forward. While Giveon isn't bringing much to the table lyrically, he's stellar at emotive singing. Knowing how to properly emotive while singing is important because it can turn regular lyrics into something much greater

Make sure to check out Giveon's EP's Take Time and When It's All Said And Done.
