Posted: 16 Mar 2021 07:30 AM PDT

Rules

Artists qualify if they're never gotten 50 or more upvotes on /r/HipHopHeads (counting features)

Formatting:

>Artist - Title

>Description: no character minimum but some things that might be good to include: where the rapper is from, what subgenres they might fall into, have cosigns they might have, what their influences are, who they sound like.

Example:

>Aaron May - Let Go

>18 year old Houston Rapper, biggest influences are J Cole and Nas.

Heavily recommended: If you post a song, listen to another song and comment on it. Otherwise this thing doesn't really work that well.

Feel free to add any feedback on what could make these threads better.

Mother of Tamir Rice Criticizes Grammys, Activists, from profiting off of black death

Posted: 16 Mar 2021 06:08 AM PDT

Responding to Samaria Rice's criticism of BLM, CHIKA calls out BLM LA for a march they organized that doubled as a YG music video shoot. Mentions that she left a "BLM celebrity group chat" after event + accuses BLM leadership of caring more abt proximity to celebrities than preserving black lives

Posted: 16 Mar 2021 03:06 PM PDT

It all started with this tweet responding to the story about Tamir Rice's mother calling out BLM and Tamika Mallory:

CHIKA:I had to divest from the BLM celebrity group chat last summer bc when I voiced disgust that they'd allowed YG to turn a march and vigil for Breonna Taylor into a concert/music video, nobody wanted to admit it was wrong.

I don't trust it, I'm sorry. She's right.

I have homies in the group and wouldn't want to speak ill of them as people, but there is such a thing as objective truth.

Nobody that day spoke up but me & Amber Riley.

Left the march in angry tears. Left the chat that same day.

When your desire for attention & proximity to powerful black celebrities comes at the expense of the fight for justice, you've sold your soul.

There's a lot more I wanted to say, but I felt the burden of being the one to discredit a group that is seemimgly "doing the work."

But I learned a lot of dark shit that day & haven't associated with them since.

Picture of her tweets about the march turned YG music video, leaving the protest, more, texts with someone named Kendrick who is not Kendrick Lamar

Anon: Thank you for speaking up cuz it was FUCKED up & so unprincipled. BLM LA (as a former member) cares more about cozying up to celebrities than building community power. Ppl in south central call them ambulance chasers - only show up when ppl die but don't provide material support. The "leader" of the LA chapter laughed at a comrade of mine's suggestion of creating mutual aid networks (food distributions, clothing distributions, etc) and that was a couple years ago.

CHIKA: Literally this. They thrive off of the number of "famous" people they can manipulate into legitimizing them, but they don't care forreal.

That's literally how I was introduced to you. Leaving them and finding REAL people doing the work. Salute.

Explaining the "celebrity group chat" thing

Anon: "the blm celebrity group chat" already sounds like a recipe for cliques and power dynamics tbf

CHIKA: It was wholesome, actually. People really did care. We organized, showed up, marched, did townhalls, etc.

It's the leadership that I don't trust for a second.

Anon: Performative Activism. Just that. They couldn't admit it because it would tarnish their reputation, their image. They were never for the people. I agree with Chika.

CHIKA:Lemme be super clear w/ my words. The majority of the people IN the chat had good intentions and showed up for the right reasons.

(Also, it's not called the "BLM celebrity group chat," I just dk what else to call it.)

The weird behavior was from the leadership.

Anon: The fact that there is a BLM celebrity group chat in the first place is so wild to me.

CHIKA:To be fair, it was created to be a secure place to speak about where certain marches/demonstrations were taking place.

Vocal influencers' platforms were being watched by LAPD/local government. I even got detained.

The chat was a way to spread information w/o leaks.

I'm not defending BLM at all, but I think too many people are getting hung up on the existence of a group chat when that was never the issue.

Don't get distracted, there's important shit to discuss.

Anon: Y'all made it a class issue when rich and famous people decided organize among yourselves and leave the rest of us out.

Exercise just a little self-reflection.

CHIKA: .... How do you create narratives from scratch?

Every march was public.

Grassroots organizers were in the chat, too. Communicating quietly through chat for us to pass along to the public without tipping off police with tweets.

The message of the original tweet is that once I peeped that BLM's leaders didn't value or respect the lives of the fallen, it made sense that we were being used as pawns.

I called it out and left immediately.

Celebs weren't the ones profiting. BLM did.

Anon: If grassroots organizers were in the chat why highlight it was a "BLM celebrity group chat." At the end of the day celebrities and these disingenuous activists have hijacked the BLM movement. That needs to be addressed because 99.9% of celebs need to stay away.

CHIKA: To show that BLM cares more about proximity to celebrities than preserving black lives, which was what Tamir's mother was saying.

Literally the only reason that distinction was made. To co-sign her statements about BLM's performative activism.

Y'all realize had I not included the word "celebrity," the entire point would be lost, right? That gc wasn't a flex. It just proves the intentions behind whoever made it weren't good.

Audio message clarifying about the "BLM celebrity group chat"

CHIKA:Imma just let y'all be mad at influencers/celebs for thinking that they were doing good instead of the BLM committee who knew they were not.

Let's just ignore that an organization people wanted to trust was using people with platforms to seem more legit.

This is part of the reason bad people get away with bad things. Because even when it comes out, we'd rather focus on the false concept of exclusivity instead of the evil shit people are doing.

Noname: i understand why a private chat could be useful but celebs arent the main ones followed/terrorized by the state. it's organizers on the ground that are disappeared and murdered. i think critique of celebs AND blm is necessary. folks need to organize in tandem with community... which both celebs + blm leaders refuse to do. this is an example to all of us interested in movement work. as celebs we need to take our cue from the people most impacted, not blm spokespeople. grateful chika shared her experience. hope this encourages folks to join radical orgs

CHIKA: there were multiple private chats on this particular encrypted platform, but one huge one that the BLM leaders invited us to. (i'd name the app, but i think it would defeat the purpose.)

i agree that inviting only people of "status" or with platforms was strategic & grimy tho.

the problem is that a lot of us were unaware of how our concerns had been commodified to aid an agenda we'd never willingly push.

that's why i was sickened and left when i noticed the lack of regard for the actual cause. they didn't gaf.

we gotta be more cognizant of when your intentions are weaponized. cuz nobody, besides those insisting on positioning themselves as the faces of blm, knew what was going on until we did. which genuinely sucks.

Noname: hate that you almost got finessed into blm foolishness 🤍

CHIKA: that shit is so bizarre & manipulative. i'm really glad they showed their ass so blatantly.

CHIKA: i will say once i left, i caught up with a few others who'd noticed before me and far more impactful group was formed and led by community leaders instead of an org like BLM.

the main objective being to listen, ask questions, take notes + use privilege as leverage for them. those names i'd happily provide, but i know they don't want credit. just know, some of your favs are fuckin angels.

CHIKA: i found more receipts but i feel like i have set a dumpster fire already. not messy, just a little more proof.

only sharing my side rn, but i was able to talk through the blm situation that day with another black woman of influence who i respect & who also peeped the bullshit. [there's some screenshots of twitter DMs she sent after the YG thing

i later found out why they were able to finesse that lil 100k person concert during a pandemic.

asking permission to share other shit outta respeck. sit tight. cuz it's important.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why is X artist higher than Y artist on the 200 chart, even though X artist sold less?

A: This is because of a discrepancy between Billboard's ranking and the ranking from the website that the sales data is scraped from

Q: Where do you get the sales data from?

A: https://hitsdailydouble.com/sales_plus_streaming

Q: What does "err" mean on the 200 chart?

A: If you are seeing "err", that means that the bot I use to gather chart data couldn't identify sales data for a particular album because of a difference in album naming between Billboard and HitsDailyDouble

R&B Artist Spotlight: Kali Uchis

Music Style: Hazy Neo Soul that takes influence from 60's R&B and Soul, Doo-Wop, Hip-Hop, Funk, Jazz, and Latin music

Karly-Marina Loaiza, otherwise known as Kali Uchis is someone who takes R&B music to a whole new level. She has the makings of the next big R&B star. She's always taking things to a new level musically. You all may recognize Kali from her features on Time (Free Nationals by Free Nationals), 10% (BUBBA by Kaytrananda), See You Again (Flower Boy by Tyler the Creator), Get You (Freudian by Daniel Caesar), or She's My Collar (Humanz by Gorillaz). So, some of you all may have recognized Kali's sensual lo-fi like singing voice. What I like about Kali Uchis is that she incorporates her Colombian heritage into her music an turns it into her own sound. Another talented artist who doses this is Gabriel Garzón-Montano.

It's actually very difficult to pin-point Kali's sound because her sound is all over the place. She channels new jack swing (Good to You), Boom Bap (Dream), 90's hip hop (Mucho Gusto), dancehall (Tyrant, Ridin' Round), tribal sounds (De Nadie, Inhale), modern hip hop (Tiger Lilly, Honey Baby, Only Girl), pop oriented stuff (Loner, In My Dreams, Dead to Me), Psychedelia (Just a Stranger, Sunset, Por Que te Vas), Reggaeton (Nuestro Planeta, No Eres tu (Soy Yo), Te Pongo Mal), Borlero (La Luna Enamorada, Que to Pedí//), folk (Ángel sin cielo), trip hop (Vaya Con Dios), funk (After the Storm, Coming Home), jazz (You Just Wanna Stay, Rush, Feel Like a Fool), reggae (Pay Day, Know What I Want, Killer), bedroom pop (Call me, Chimichanga), bossa nova (Body Language), and chopped n screwed (Fue Mejor, De Nadie). Kali's music has so many different elements to it that it can be classified as genre bending. That means whenever you listen to a Kali Uchis project, almost ever song will sound different and won't feel out of place. It always keeps you on the edge of your seat on what musical direction she'll go into next.

Kali's music always has this hazy psychedelic vibe to it. She incorporates a lot of old school soul and doo-wop in it. Some have even compared her to Amy Winehouse. While Amy is definitely an influence to Kali, it would be disingenuous to refer to Kali as the next Amy Winehouse. If you've seen Kali, you can tell that she likes the old school aesthetic. She often dresses like an 50's-60's soul singer, and her singing voice is proof of that. Her singing voice is light and soulful with a mature tone. Also, her range is massive. Watch her turn Bjork's Venus as a Boy to a old school soulful cover. Kali can turn any song from any genre into her own, and that's talent right there. Kali's voice is also very doo-wop and jazz inspired. In fact, some of her songs such as Rush, Sycamore Tree, All or Nothing, and Pay Day have doo-wop inspired vocals. She even showcases her vocal range on All or Nothing, In My Dreams, and Què Te Pedí//. One thing a lot of you guys may not know is that Kali Uchis can rap and sing rap. Her rapping can be seen in T.Y.W.I.G. and Mucho Gusto. Her sing rapping can be seen in Miami, Three Pills, and Table for Two.

Another thing, that I feel isn't spoken enough about Kali is her writing ability. Kali's lyricism is often very comedic. She often delivers these funny one liners like "Should Have Left Your Ass in the Friend Zone"; "F*ck me over, I'll f*ck you worse then take off to Japan"; But Why Would I be Kim? I could be Kanye; in Know What I Want, Ridin' Round, and Miami respectively. Some more of comedic writing can be seen in the 2nd verse or Tyrant as shown below.

Word on the street, you got hoes
I disappear like El Chapo
'Til you said you would cut off the whole world
If little old me would be yours
Well Mira, mira, míralo (míralo, míralo)
Papi está rico, papi está guapo (papi está guapo)
The world's been asking us to lose control
All we ever do is French like Brigitte Bardot (Brigitte Bardot)

Also some of Kali's best lyrics can be see in some of her spanish songs such as Telepatía, Quiero sentirme bien, Vaya Con Dios, and Fue Mejor.

If you want something hazy and genre bending, listen to her mixtape Drunken Babble (which isn't on spotify or apple music btw). If you want some lush production with Doo-Wop vocals, listen to her EP Por Vida. If you want some nice psychedelia sounds mixed in with neo soul, listen to Isolation. If you want some latin music listen to Sin miedo (del amor y otros demonios) ∞.

Some of my favorite Kali Uchis songs are: Dream, T.Y.W.I.G., You just Wanna Say, Sunset, Pay Day, Tiger Lilly, Inhale, MULTI, Honey Baby, All or Nothing, Lost in Paradise, Water to Wine, Sycamore Tree, Call Me, Melting, Lottery, Rush, Ridin' Around, Loner, Only Girl, Body Language, Flight 22, Your Teeth in My Neck, Tyrant, Dead to Me, Nuestro Planeta, In My Dreams, Gotta Get Up, Tomorrow, After the Storm, Feel Like A Fool, Killer, La Luna Enamorada, Fue Mejor, //Aguardente y limón %ᵕ‿‿ᵕ%, Quiero sentirme bien, Telepatía , De Nadie, Solita, Time, Are You Feeling Sad, See You Again, Get You.

Here's a Spotify and Apple Music playlist of Kali Uchis.

Here Are Some Good Performances: Dead to Me (Acoustic), COLORS Performance, Tito's Full Live Performance, Live Performance on Jimmy Fallon

[DISCUSSION] Childish Gambino - 3.15.20 (One Year Later)

Posted: 15 Mar 2021 08:11 AM PDT

One year ago, Childish Gambino debuted his 4th studio album with a 12 hour live stream on his website donaldgloverpresents.com. It was his most polarizing album yet, potentially due to the lack of album cover, song titles, album title and traditional rollout.

Track List:

  1. 0.00
  2. Algorhythm
  3. Time
  4. 12.38
  5. 19.10
  6. 24.19
  7. 32.22
  8. 35.31
  9. 39.28
  10. 42.26
  11. 47.48
  12. 53.49

Now, one year later, what are your thoughts concerning this album's overall mood, lyrics, production, & release? Has your opinion on the album changed in the last year? What are your favorite songs? Has this album aged well?

What is the biggest gap in quality between two verses on the same song?

Posted: 14 Mar 2021 11:14 PM PDT

The first thing that came to mind was Big Sean and everyone else on "Clique" but his verse wasn't outright bad, it just wasn't legendary as the other two. Another could be Chance the Rapper and (some of) the other artists throughout "The Big Day" like DaBaby on "Hot Shower". Bringing up Bizarre on D12 probably feels like cheating for this question lol but it's ok.

This was his debut album. I think it has some standout tracks and overall an above average offer. I'm a bit biased tho as Don Tolliver is one of my favorite artists. What did you guys think about the album?
