[DISCUSSION] D Smoke - Black Habits (One Year Later)

grammy nominated

RYM Review:

Black Habits is a large slice of black culture. It's not the first nor last time you'll hear someone singing or rapping insightful lyrics, but D Smoke's delivery is incredible and refreshing. His mix of west coast and conscious hip hop with some jazz rap and Spanish holds you down for the hour and 2 minutes runtime in a relaxing, moving, and powerful way. There's a lot of heart and soul packed into this, especially on the two title tracks "Black Habits I," with a great feature from Jackie Gouche, and the closing track "Black Habits II." A lot of it weighs heavy on my chest; it makes me feel like I'm looking out a window into a completely different world. It's a world I was privileged to not have firsthand experience in, but one that affects others in a way I'll never know, and listening to this album seems like the closest I'll ever get.

[DISCUSSION] $UICIDEBOY$ - Stop Staring at the Shadows (One Year Later)

Posted: 14 Feb 2021 03:38 PM PST

RYM Review:

Probably my favorite of the suicideboys projects I have heard, if not second to Live Fast Die Whenever. This is just another project that makes me consider diving deep into their expansive discog, but what's so good about this one? Well, it's a great "smooth trap" experience, where the production is light and silky, with great pacing, and the bars match. This is a pretty polar opposite to Live Fast..., where everything was abrasive and loud. While I think they do that style much better, I still would say this is worth a listen.

Who gave Houston an identity? Rap-A-Lot & Suave House Records or SUC & Swishahouse?

Posted: 14 Feb 2021 08:14 PM PST

Who gave Houston more an identity? From my point of view of growing up in Port Arthur, TX (Hometown of UGK and it's 86 miles from Houston.) As a person that's in my mid-30s, Rap-A-Lot & Suave House Records gave Houston an identity. Think about it. Both of those labels were always talked and their artists were always promoted heavily in magazines plus their videos were shown on tv. Their albums were distributed everywhere in stores. I love DJ Screw, Screwed Up Click and Swishahouse but it was more of a underground thing and some of their songs were not always on commercial radio. The world also never knew about Screw music until the early 2000s except for Texas natives. Rap-A-Lot/Suave House gave Houston more of a street, gangsta and mobster type music. Screwed Up Click/Swishahouse gave Houston more of the slab culture, lean culture, candy paint, and Screw music. There was always two hip-hop sounds In Houston. Even though SUC is from the south side and Swishahouse is from the north side, Rap-A-Lot is a northside label (5th Ward Boyz, Trinity Garden Cartel, Willie D, J. Prince and Too Much Trouble are all from the north side. No Scarface is not from the north side. He's from the south side section called South Acres.) Suave House was located in south west Houston but it was a mixture of Houston and Memphis artists. Eightball & MJG and Tela are from Memphis. Mr. Mike is from Corpus Christi, TX (Mr. Mike and Thorough are in a group called South Circle). Thorough is from Houston, Crime Boss is from Houston. I was always a fan of all of those labels and groups. What do ya'll think of this? Anybody from Texas on here, let me know about your thoughts on this. Outsiders of Texas, you can have your opinion on this as well.

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

[DISCUSSION] Kanye West - The Life Of Pablo (5 Years Later)

Posted: 13 Feb 2021 08:59 PM PST

On this day in 2016, Kanye drops The Life of Pablo.

An album noteworthy in his discography for its continual evolution, it started off in recording sessions post Yeezus under the working title So Help Me God to be released in 2014. With continual delays, recordings from those album sessions released were All Day, Only One, and FourFiveSeconds. In 2015 he changed the album's official name to SWISH and slated for a January 2016 release. This resulted in the short revival of West's G.O.O.D. Fridays series from the MBDTF era, dropping Real Friends, No More Parties in LA, and 30 Hours in this limited run building up to the album.

After getting involved in a twitter feud with Wiz Khalifa over changing the album name to Waves, screening the album at Madison Square Garden for Yeezy Season 3, and premiering Ultralight Beam with Highlights on SNL, Kanye dropped the album at the end of the show on February 14th.

  1. Ultralight Beam (feat. Kelly Price, Chance The Rapper & Kirk Franklin)

  2. Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1 (feat. Kid Cudi)

  3. Pt. 2 (feat. Desiigner)

  4. Famous (feat. Swizz Beatz & Rihanna)

  5. Feedback

  6. Low Lights (feat. Kelly Price)

  7. Highlights (feat. Young Thug)

  8. Freestyle 4 (feat. Desiigner)

  9. I Love Kanye

  10. Waves (feat. Kid Cudi & Chris Brown)

  11. FML (feat. The Weeknd)

  12. Real Friends (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)

  13. Wolves (feat. Sia & Vic Mensa)

  14. Frank's Track (feat. Frank Ocean)

  15. Siiiiiiiiilver Surffffeeeeer Intermission (feat. Max B)

  16. 30 Hours (feat. Andre 3000)

  17. No More Parties In LA (feat. Kendrick Lamar)

  18. Facts (Charlie Heat Version)

  19. Fade (feat. Post Malone & Ty Dolla $ign)

  20. Saint Pablo

Points for Discussion

  • Where does this album rank for you amongst his discography?

  • Favorite song here? Favorite beat?

  • Kanye was said to "change" the streaming game by continually updating this album to where this final product sounds fairly different to its originally released version. Is this something you'd like to see stop in the future, or have you seen this happen a lot in the past 5 years?

  • Many say this is potentially the last great album in his discography, do you agree or disagree and why?
