Rappers ahead of their time.

Posted: 02 Nov 2020 04:42 PM PST

Just went back and listened to some old SpaceGhostPurrp and mans never really blew up like he probably should have. I think most of us here know how big of an influence he has had on the game. Any other names you can think of that were way ahead of their time or have never gotten their flowers for their work?

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

[DISCUSSION] Jack Harlow's team is zealously scrubbing the internet of his older music

Posted: 31 Oct 2020 09:10 AM PDT

Not too long ago, you could search YouTube or Google and find older, even prepubescent rap songs by Jack Harlow. These days your search will come up empty. Even the "Before They Were Famous" video on YouTube used to have a snippet of one of Jack's earliest songs, but that portion of the video was stealthily cut out. My theory is that Jack and/or his team want the early songs lost to time because they clearly show Jack having a typical suburban white accent, revealing that the "Kentucky accent"/blaccent he uses in songs and interviews is artificial.

To be clear, I don't actually think it's terrible for white rappers to put on an accent in their songs. Rapping exactly how they talk irl can sound weird. But I do think it's a problem when these same rappers do interviews and pretend that's their natural voice.

[DISCUSSION] OutKast - Stankonia (20 Years Later)

Posted: 31 Oct 2020 06:28 AM PDT

20 years ago, the duo released their 4th studio album. It was produced by Organized Noize, OutKast, and Mr. Dj. The album also produced some of the biggest hits for the duo, like the chart topping Ms. Jackson, and others like B.O.B. And So Fresh, So Clean.

Thoughts on the album 20 years later?

Favorite songs and verses?

Is it a classic?

A Guide to the Belgian Rap Scene

Posted: 31 Oct 2020 11:43 AM PDT

Alright everybody, time to delve into the unknown: the Belgian rap scene. Despite having relatively small cities and being a tiny country, a large part of the country is rather urban. Over the last several years, Belgium has developed a rather unique style of hip-hop music. Let me guide you through the different regions in Belgium and what they have to offer.

  1. Brussels: The Belgian capital has a lot to offer when it comes to hip-hop. Probably, the most well-known rapper at the moment is Zwangere Guy ("Pregnant Guy"). He is known for making rather 'rough' rap music with amazing lyrical competence with a juice Brussels-Dutch accent, mostly covering life in some Brussel's poorer regions. His lyrics are typically very emotional and many people feel like they can relate to what he has to say. Zwangere Guy is part of a larger collective called Stikstof and their 2018 album is one of the best Belgian rap albums (in my opinion). The other 'big' rapper is Romeo Elvis. Romeo Elvis has been popular for quite some time in Brussels, but really only became popular in the rest of Belgium when he released 'Morale 2'. Since that album, his music has become more generic (in my opinion) but nevertheless remains at the top of the game. Other rappers/rap collectives from Brussels are L'Or du Commun, Caballero & JeanJass, Blu Samu and Le 77.
  2. Antwerp: Let's move north, into Flanders, to Antwerp. Not sure he counts as a rapper anymore, but Tourist LeMC is probably the hottest artist from Antwerp. He has this really distinct Antwerpian accent, which makes his sound unique. The city is home to some really cool female rappers such as Coely and Miss Angel. Then there's a whole number of artist who are all kind of similarly popular: DVTCH NORRIS, TheColorGrey, blackwave., Glints and Woodie Smalls.
  3. West-Flanders: All the way to the west, nice and close to the sea, is the province of West-Flanders. West-Flemish people are known for talking a dialect so odd, even people in other parts of Flanders have a hard time understanding. Still, it houses some awesome rap artists. Although now they just look like a bunch of old dudes, people still love 'T Hof Van Commerce. Another very likeable rapper is Brihang. He is known for his calming production and poetic lyrics. Another really cool 'rap collective' (well, they're two so basically, yeah) is Ntrek. Their 2018 album is TOP NOTCH.

Clearly there are many more talented hip-hop artists in Belgium, but I simply could not name them all. If I forgot some rappers, feel free to add them in the comments!
