New Ty Dolla $ign album "Featuring Ty Dolla $ign" out on October 23rd

Posted: 14 Oct 2020 12:05 PM PDT

The Instagram announcement

""FEATURING TY DOLLA $IGN" THE ALBUM OUT EVERYWHERE OCTOBER 23.

I've been blessed with the gift of collaborating. Not every artist can collaborate with another artist and have the final product be something incredible. Many people have said that when you see a song that says, "featuring Ty Dolla $ign," you know it's gonna be fire. As humbled as I am when I hear that, I can't say I disagree.

My approach to music has always been about frequencies, emotions and energy. When I collaborate, whether it's for my project or someone else's, it's always about marrying frequencies. When I create a project and have artists featured on my songs, I don't pick who the hottest artist is or what's going to get the most streams, I choose which artist's frequency is going to work best on the song. I use featured artists with the same precision that I would use any instrument.

Everybody has their own side of 'Ty Dolla $ign' that they prefer: the go-to collaborator of all genres, the underrated king of R&B, the hitmaker of the often raunchy club banger, the multi-instrumentalist & producer. Sometimes, I even want to use my different frequencies on my own songs.

I decided to name my third studio album "Featuring Ty Dolla $ign" because there is truly something for everybody on this album. It features some of my most talented friends, on some of the best music I've made in my career."

[DISCUSSION] Little Brother - The Minstrel Show (15 Years Later)

Posted: 14 Oct 2020 10:31 AM PDT

The Minstrel Show is the second studio album by hip hop trio Little Brother. It followed the critical success of their 2003 debut, The Listening. The album was highly anticipated and touted as a probable breakthrough for the group, even before its release. The title is a reference to the minstrel shows that were popular in the United States during the 19th century.

Themes

The album has a running concept based on a fictional television network called "UBN" (U Black Niggas Network), which is a satire of stereotypical programs and advertisements for African Americans. For example, on "Cheatin", Phonte (performing under his alter-ego "Percy Miracles"), spoofs the over-dramatic R&B sagas performed by singers such as R. Kelly and Ronald Isley. Many of the skits contain tongue-in-cheek references to black pop-culture in the United States.

Controversy

For many reasons, the furor surrounding The Minstrel Show overshadowed the music itself. On August 16, 2005, hip hop magazine The Source's Editor-in-Chief, Joshua "Fahiym" Ratcliffe, announced his retirement due to conflicting opinions on the rating The Minstrel Show was to receive in the next issue of the publication. According to Ratcliffe, his original rating of 4.5 (out of 5) was reduced to 4 by the magazine's Chief Brand Executive, Raymond "Benzino" Scott and CEO Dave Mays because Ratcliffe gave then-upcoming artist Young Jeezy a rating of 4. After they refused to change the rating back to 4.5 he decided to step down from his editorial position. For his part, Benzino admitted at the time of questioning, that he had yet to listen to the album for himself and had no problem with Ratcliffe's original rating.

While this may have built up anticipation for the album, another more serious obstacle reared its head when the entertainment network BET (Black Entertainment Television) refused to play the group's video for the single, "Lovin' It", allegedly because they deemed it "too intelligent".[1][2] Michael Lewellen, a publicist and program director for BET, responded, "It's not true, not in that context. BET reserves the right to show or not to show music videos of any type based on the network's own standards and decision-making processes."[3] In a portion of the video, the group lightly pokes fun at the different stylistic aspects of hip hop subgenres such as "gangsta", "backpack", "earthy" and "icy". The rest of it sees them performing to a zealous crowd.[1]

Reception

In contrast to the reaction of BET, Little Brother received praises from many powerful forces within the hip hop world, such as XXL magazine, who gave the album an "XL" rating and most notably, Scratch Magazine, who gave it a perfect 10 out of 10 rating. Despite all the controversy, The Minstrel Show debuted at a #56 position on the Billboard charts selling 18,000 copies in its first week out (a much lower number than expected by both fans and critics). A second official single and any further promotion of the album was abandoned by Atlantic Records, and although the group soon began recording their follow-up album, Getback, their relationship with the label drew to a close before its release.

[DISCUSSION] Lil Wayne - I Am Not A Human Being (10 Years Later)

Posted: 14 Oct 2020 10:00 AM PDT

I Am Not a Human Being is the eighth studio album by the American rapper Lil Wayne. It had a digital release on September 27, 2010, and on compact disc on October 12, 2010, by Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records and Universal Motown. It was recorded before Wayne's eight-month prison term for criminal possession of a weapon. Production for the album was by Wayne and several record producers, including Boi-1da, Cool & Dre, Streetrunner, Noah "40" Shebib and DJ Infamous.

Upon its release, I Am Not a Human Being received generally favorable reviews from music critics, who drew comparisons to Wayne's earlier works. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, with first-week digital sales alone. Following its physical release, it topped the chart, becoming Wayne's second US number-one album and the first studio album since Tupac Shakur's Me Against the World in 1995 to reach the top position on the Billboard 200 while its artist was in prison. Its lead single, "Right Above It", became a top-ten hit in the United States. The album has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[1]

Background

On August 4, 2010, Billboard announced that Lil Wayne would release an EP called I Am Not a Human Being and a single from the EP called "Right Above It". The single debuted on DJ Funkmaster Flex's show, which Lil Wayne called and gave an interview. The album is a prelude to Lil Wayne's album Tha Carter IV.[2]

"I'm putting out a [Wayne] album called I Am Not a Human Being and I'll probably drop it on his birthday, September 27...I'm not even putting it out in stores. We just gonna put it out virally and maybe package it up for Christmas. Give 'em a hard copy later for fan appreciation."[3]

Drake, Jay Sean, Lil Twist, Nicki Minaj, Jae Millz, Tyga, Gudda Gudda, Lil Chuckee and T-Streets are all guests on the album.[4][5]

Vibe magazine spoke with the DJ Scoob Doo about Tha Carter IV and I Am Not a Human Being, who said, "I got videos for the Carter IV and the I'm not a Human Being EP all ready. I can't say the name of the song but Wayne was singing on the hook, but they're getting Drake to re-do it and it's off the Human Being EP," Scoob Doo says. "Carter IV is probably the best album I've heard in the last decade, but Wayne is such a different artist now that he wants to record new music when he comes home. The stuff he's talking about now is just on another level. That's why a lot of the songs on the EP were originally taken from the Carter IV."[6]

Lil Wayne's manager Cortez Bryant told SPIN that I Am Not a Human Being would actually be a full-length album. Initially, the tracks were to be appear on Tha Carter IV, but Wayne decided to put the old tracks on the album so new music could be recorded for Tha Carter IV.[7]

He uses no autotune on the album: according to Birdman, it's just "raw rap".[8]

The production to bonus track "YM Salute" was originally recorded by Young Jeezy and Ester Dean as potential material for Young Jeezy's forthcoming album TM 103.

The song "I Don't Like The Look Of It" was originally released on Gudda Gudda's 2010 mixtape "Back 2 Guddaville" with a different beat under the title "Willy Wonka". The instrumental was changed when it was released on this album due to sample clearance issues.[9]

A Guide to Statik Selektah

Posted: 13 Oct 2020 12:00 PM PDT

In honor of Statik Selektah's announcement that the first single off his ninth studio album, The Balancing Act, will be released this Friday, I thought I'd make a post dedicated to his career and influence as a DJ and producer (as I did for The Alchemist back in March).

Inspired by DJ Premier and Funkmaster Flex, Boston youth Patrick Baril began his DJing career in middle school under the moniker DJ Statik, which evolved into a successful career performing at parties and clubs throughout the east coast. After attending school for audio production engineering, DJ Statik changed his name to Statik Selektah (inspired by a local reggae act's unconscious muttering), and started his "ShowOff" Brand, which he still uses today. The brand began as ShowOff Marketing, which helped to promote clients such as G-Unit Records, Reeboks, and P. Diddy's notorious "Vote or Die" campaign in 2004 (hilarious South Park version). In 2006 the brand evolved into a record label, releasing Termanology's Out The Gate album, followed shortly by Statik Selektah's solo LP, Spell My Name Right: The Album in 2007.

Spell My Name Right boasts one of the most impressive guest roosters of any hip-hop album in the 2000s (rivaled perhaps by The Alchemist's Chemical Warfare). Included on the tracklist were: DJ Premier, Termanology, Styles P, Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, Consequence, Joell Ortiz, Kool G Rap, Sheek Louch, Freeway, Cassidy, DJ Khaled, Red Café, Mims, Uncle Murda, Jadakiss, Royce da 5'9", Cormega, Reks, Doug E. Fresh, Tony Touch, Scram Jones, Esoteric, Clinton Sparks, Big Shug, Lil Fame, AZ, Slum Village, Granite State, Evidence, The Alchemist, Skyzoo, KRS-One, and Large Professor - among others. The album included some of the best acts of the 80s (Doug E. Fresh, KRS), the 90s (Q-Tip, G Rap, Jadakiss, Preemo), and the 2000s (Royce, Evidence, Termanology). It even had DJ Khaled before he turned into a meme.

Highlight tracks: "6 in the Morning" (featuring Joell Ortiz, Kool G Rap & Sheek Louch), "Stop, Look, Listen" (featuring Styles P, Termanology & Q-Tip), "Punch Out!" (featuring Big Shug; great Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! sample), and "Got Me Goin' (Hip Hop)" (featuring Slum Village & Granite State), but everything on here is really worth listening to.

Statik would then release Stick 2 the Script in 2008, including many of the features from his first album, as well as adding M.O.P, Little Brother, Redman, and CL Smooth, among others. Highlight Tracks: "For the City" (featuring M.O.P. & Jadakiss), "On the Marquee" (featuring Little Brother, Joe Scudda & Chaundon), and "Take It All Back" (featuring Reks, Ea$y Money, Royce Da 5'9" & Paula Campbell). Here's a pretty good review of this album from before P4K went to shit.

Statik Selektah has released six phenomenal albums since then, all of which featured strong production, scratching, and feature performances. Each album deserves it's own write up, but for the sake of space I'll instead highlight something that Statik does exceptionally well (perhaps better than any other producer, IMO) across all these albums - his ability to bring together great, yet unique, collaborations between artists. Statik features a large range of artists on his projects, and the results are always great tracks made up of artists you wouldn't expect to see together. Some notable examples include:

"Groupie Love" (featuring Mac Miller & Josh Xantus)

"Black Swan" (featuring Nitty Scott, MC & Rapsody)

"Bird's Eye View" (featuring Raekwon, Joey Badass & Black Thought) (personal favorite Statik beat)

"21 & Over" (featuring Sean Price & Mac Miller)

"Camouflage Dons" (featuring Smif-n-Wessun & Flatbush Zombies)

"Carry On" (featuring Joey Badass & Freddie Gibbs)

"The Imperial" (featuring Action Bronson, Royce Da 5'9" & Black Thought)

"Alarm Clock" (featuring Ab-Soul, Jon Connor & Logic)

"Beautiful Life" (featuring Action Bronson & Joey Badass)

"Murder Game" (featuring Smif-n-Wessun, Young M.A & Buckshot)

"Scratch Off" (featuring CJ Fly, Talib Kweli & Cane)

"Legendary" by Joey Bada$$ (featuring J. Cole) (not from a Statik album, but a great collaboration he likely had a role in creating)

"But You Don't Hear Me Tho" (featuring The Lox & Mtume) (Mtume sample)

"Nobody Move" (featuring Raekwon & Royce da 5'9")

These albums are all filled with classic tracks and I encourage everyone to listen to them in full, but these songs represent some of the best artist collaborations he's created.

Not only are Statik's studio albums incredibly strong, he is also able to make phenomenal collaborative albums with rappers. Notable collaborative albums include: Lord Giveth, Lord Taketh Away (with Freddie Gibbs), Well-Done (with Action Bronson), TrillStatik (with Bun B), Gran Turismo (with Curren$y), Rudebwoy (with CJ Fly), as well as his 1982 series with Termanology, among others. Statik brings unique production for the artists he works with (heavy drums for Freddie Gibbs, smooth baselines for Curren$y, Jamaiican riddims for CJ Fly, etc.), highlighting his diversity as a producer.

Beyond his own albums, Statik Selektah boasts production credits across dozens of classic albums, beginning with Reks' Along Came the Chosen, for which he produced "Work" (feat. Lucky Dice, B. Knox, & Rip Shop), in 2001. He's worked extensively with Pro Era in the past, and played a critical role in developing their careers. Some of the artists who feature him on their albums include Nas, M.O.P, Styles P, Sean Price, Raekwon, Freddie Gibbs, Westside Gunn, and Wiz Khalifa, as well as many others. Most recently, Statik had production credits on Smoke DZA's Homegrown, for which he produced "Bank Withdrawal" (feat. Tish Hyman, Numberz) and "Union Dues" (feat. NymLo, Berner) - released on October 2, 2020. Here's a (near) comprehensive list of Statik Selektah's production discography - his output really is crazy, I definitely recommend checking this list out, he's produced for almost every major rapper of the 2000s and 2010s.

I'll end this post by highlighting Statik Selektah's impressive career as a DJ - both touring and on the radio. Statik Selektah has served as a DJ on tour for many acclaimed rappers, including Guru (RIP), Q-Tip, Joey Bada$$ and Pro Era, The Lox, and many others. He's performed in famous venues (such as The Boiler Room in London) and festivals (whatever festival this was filmed at, if you know pls drop it in the comments, cameos by The Alchemist, Joey Bada$$, Kirk Knight, and Schoolboy Q circa 2012-2013).

Statik began his radio DJing career in 1996 at the age of 14, spinning records at WPEA's radio station in a boarding school he did not attend. Since then, Statik has DJed and hosted eight radio shows nationwide, including his still-running 'Showoff Radio' program on the Eminem-fronted Sirius XM station Shade 45, run under his ShowOff brand (check out ShowOff's YouTube page here)

At the moment, Statik Selektah does a lot of promo on his Patreon, which I don't care to pay to subscribe to (though I've heard he posts good content there). His upcoming single, Keep it Moving featuring Joey Bada$$, Nas, and Gary Clark Jr. will be released this Friday, 10/16.

Mods pls don't take this down :)

Edit: Stick 2 The Script released in 2008, not 2009

Edit 2: Sent this to Statik and he posted it on his Twitter! Made my day! Everyone make sure to buy The Balancing Act when it releases!
