Black Thought Denounces Trump and His Lies

Posted: 12 Oct 2020 02:49 PM PDT

Black Thought: https://www.instagram.com/p/CF0gbm6AyoR/?utm_source=ig_embed

It's part of a larger project.

Black Thought, Talib Kweli and Hamilton star Daveed Diggs are among those lending their voices to a new project denouncing Donald Trump.

Created by poet Marc Bamuthi Joseph, "45 Lies" is a national campaign using hip hop to take aim at the president. Joseph says he has never trusted politicians. Still, the first generation Haitian-American is alarmed over what he sees as "a climate of disinformation" that has ensued since Trump assumed the Oval Office.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Joseph talks about being inspired to launch the project about two weeks ago with the 2020 presidential elections looming in November.

"I really wanted to do something that implored artists, very specifically to organize around fighting back against the destabilization of our democratic institutions," he explained.

Bringing together rappers, poets and playwrights from across the country, the campaign enlists 45 lyricists to "each take 45 seconds to directly challenge one of [Trump's] blatant and dangerous falsehoods," according to the project's official website.

"45 lies SO incessantly "that we've become desensitized to his falsehoods, which inordinately impact the Black community," the project's mission statement reads. "Hip Hop culture contains the talent, the reach, and the credibility to 'battle' these lies, especially in time to encourage action and dynamic response during election season. #45Lies is an organized and viral campaign to hone and unleash our potential when democracy is literally on the line."

[DISCUSSION] The Game - Documentary 2 (5 Years Later)

Posted: 12 Oct 2020 02:17 PM PDT

Background

In 2015, in an interview with Power 106, The Game announced that the album was about 90% complete and once Dr. Dre gets back from his vacation, him and Dre would be finishing recording the album. The Game also said that his children were his motivation to finish the album, speaking about being confident on his growth as a rapper: "I listened to my first album and everybody thinks it's so amazing, but I think I'm better than that. I listened to it and heard all of the flaws of the young me, and I'm like, 'Man I would have never done this song like that today.'" According to The Game, Dr. Dre was excited about the album that he called The Documentary 2 would be the best rap album in five years. On July 21, 2015, The Game revealed that Diddy said The Documentary 2 is "his best album yet".

Recording and production

On April 12, 2015, The Game released a video, titled "The Making of The Documentary 2", and it shows him in the studio with Meek Mill, working on a song, called "Soundtrack". The video also features cameo appearances from Cool & Dre and Travis Scott. During the 2015's BET Awards on North Carolina's Power 98, The Game said that he has been working with these record producers such as Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, Pharrell Williams, DJ Premier, The Alchemist, Jahlil Beats, Just Blaze, Scott Storch, and Mike Will Made It.[8] While The Game was spending the entire week in the studio with Kanye West, The Game stated that "You get a good solid week out of 'Ye if you have history." On July 6, 2015, The Game shared some footage of himself in the studio with DJ Mustard, Eric Bellinger, YG, Ty Dolla Sign, Bongo 'the Drum Gahd', Busta Rhymes and Keyshia Cole. The video features one of the snippets was a song with Game and Kendrick Lamar that was surfaced later. Joe Moses, Jay 305 and Skeme appeared in the video. Many sites posted possible track lists for the album, however, none of them were official. On July 21, 2015, The Game posted a picture of himself on the toilet, while recording a song for the album on his Instagram. Few days later, The Game posted another picture of himself working on another song with American R&B singer Tyrese, which he said that this collaboration would be on the album. The Game confirmed that Nas, Lil Wayne, E-40, Scarface, Busta Rhymes and YG would be featured on the second disc for the album, called The Documentary 2.5.

Phonte heaps praise on new film about making it as an older rapper: The 40 Year Old Version

Posted: 11 Oct 2020 04:21 AM PDT

Phonte: This is a gorgeous flick, man. Some quick thoughts: This story is about a lot of things, but the primary theme is grief. 2016 was a year of tremendous loss for me, and I didn't know what to do with myself artistically or otherwise. I was stuck. This film does a great job of showing that struggle.

The castings of real-life rap legends @stylesp and @sadatx serve as both cameo and commentary: Even if you're extremely talented, the line between "making it" in hip hop and working a blue collar job is razor thin.

This movie also has one of the best illustrations of what it really means to sell out. Selling out isn't about moving to a bigger platform. Selling out is when you specifically have to change or omit key parts of your truth in order to do so.

I love the way Radha Blank (@RadhaMUSprime) script reveres the art of battle rap. Battle rhyming is a discipline that's just as expressive and theatric as anything on Broadway. I don't think we get a juggernaut like Hamilton without modern day battle rap culture paving the way.

The comparisons to early Spike are inevitable (and warranted), but #The40YearOldVersion is neither tribute nor pastiche. This is an absolute joy to watch and will resonate deeply in the heart of any artist. Well done, @RadhaMUSprime
