[DISCUSSION] Childish Gambino - Culdesac (10 Years Later)

Posted: 03 Jul 2020 09:03 AM PDT

FROM WIKIPEDIA:

Culdesac is the fifth mixtape by American rapper Childish Gambino better known as Donald Glover, released July 3, 2010. The entire mixtape was self-produced with assistance from Community composer, Ludwig Göransson. Like his other mixtapes, Culdesac was released for free download.

When interviewed by Complex about what influenced his production, Glover had this to say: "Well, I listened to a lot of indie music. I feel like a lot rap heads don't really listen to a whole bunch of music and are closing themselves off. People feel that if you like T.I. then you won't like Animal Collective or if you like Jeezy you'd probably hate Lykke Li, and I don't think that's the case. Hip-hop is the most eclectic type of music ever, because you can stay up on anything. If the beat is tight, the beat is tight. I'm from Atlanta, so I love Outkast. I listened to a lot of their stuff when I was younger. I listened to the Wu-Tang album. I listen to "All That I Got Is You" by Ghostface like a billion times. I remember being a kid and hearing that and being like, "Oh shit, that's like me." [Laughs.] My cousin and I used to sleep in the same bed. [Laughs.] It was the first time I ever felt something. I listen to Kanye of course. I feel like Kanye paved the way for people like Drake, Wiz Khalifa, and rappers who rap about their life. Not every rapper is from the streets, yo. Jay-Z's story is not my story and I say that in the album. I love Jay-Z, but I can't tell that story."

Culdesac received positive reviews from critics. Chris Lee of the Los Angeles Times praised the album, saying: "The album's alterna-rock-augmented beats and emo-level of emotional rawness, meanwhile, are shot through with surprisingly legitimate R&B vocals also sung by Glover, making 'Culdesac' an unexpected delight: a sung-rapped cri de coeur that's as accomplished as any indie hip-hop released this year."

The Huffington Post gave the album generally positive reviews, stating: "It becomes clear from listening to "Culdesac" that Glover thinks he's on the highest creative level possible, a la Tupac, and maybe in his own way he is."

In his consumer guide for MSN Music, Robert Christgau quippedly asserted that Childish Gambino "brings more skills to the rap game than any pretender in years, fellow actor Drake included", and wrote of his musicianship, "His rhymes startle and amuse, his flow bubbles and snaps, his beats always get him where he's going, and on the expert pop song 'Got This Money' he hits the high notes on his own."

How do you think this mixtape had aged after 10 years?

[DISCUSSION] Rapping before Gil Scott-Heron

Posted: 03 Jul 2020 04:19 PM PDT

My personal favorite is Dead, a 1958 "monster mash" type song by a high school doo-wop group called the Poets. It rhymes, it has a remarkably tight flow for being so old, and it's entertaining. It literally sounds like if I had rapped in high school, right on down to the nasal voice of the lead vocalist. So, does this count as rapping and as hip-hop? Hip hop didn't really exist as a genre except for incidental examples like this until Gil Scott-Heron showed up imo.

Artists qualify if they're never gotten 50 or more upvotes on /r/HipHopHeads (counting features)

Formatting:

Artist - Title

Description: no character minimum but some things that might be good to include: where the rapper is from, what subgenres they might fall into, have cosigns they might have, what their influences are/who they sound like.

Example:

Aaron May - Let Go

17 year old Houston Rapper, biggest influences are J Cole and Nas.

Sleep Sinatra

Freethinkers

Classic boombap from......Nebraska, but you wouldnt have guessed it. Good vibes though

iivrson

Pressure

Dude is out of Atlanta and has a light spacey sound but with heavy drums. Sounds really unique.

Indianapolis rappers.

Sirius Blvck - New Jacks I don't really know who to compare him to. He's melodic with good lyrics. He's got a lot of good music. New Jacks is really a really fun and energetic song to get pumped to.

Jeaux Seph - Dead but I'm Dancing This man only has one EP out, but it's so worth listening to because of his unique style. He's got slower singing songs. It's like he's riding the emo wave over Paula Abdul beats. The new song Guilty Conscience by 070 Shake really reminded me of him.

F L A C O - Nameless King Arguably my favorite, he's got such a unique flow and sound full of clever lyrics. His first mixtape Girls with Guns gained a little traction, but he has released soo many good songs since.

Drayco McCoy - Relapse (feat. Mathaius Young) Drayco is our resident trap artist. This song gets me hype every time I listen to it. It's full of energy and so is he. Shout out Mathaius too.

AG Club

Memphis

These guys are from my hometown and they are killing shit right now. If you go look at Rich Brian's twitter, he recently posted a video where it features AG Club member, Jody Fontaine, rapping in the background.

https://twitter.com/richbrian/status/1276049033107091456?s=21

Kahlil Blue

Runway Talk (feat. MAVI)

Kahlil Blu's new album has wild and interesting production plus a ton of great features. Y'all should really check it out

[DISCUSSION] Royce Da 5'9" - Street Hop (10 Years Later)

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 01:07 PM PDT

Street Hop is the fourth studio album by American rapper Royce da 5'9", released in the United States on October 20, 2009, on One Records. It is the follow-up to his previous album Independent's Day (2005). At the release of Success Is Certain (August 9, 2011), Street Hop sold approximately 24,000 units in the United States via HitsDailyDouble.

Background

Set for July 2009, the record was released as a joint venture between Royce's M.I.C. Records and the independent label One Records. Originally intended for the first quarter, he was in the studio with his frequent collaborators DJ Premier, Nottz, DJ Green Lantern, Quincey Tones and Carlos Broady of Diddy's The Hitmen, as well as producers Ski Beatz, Kay Gee and Emile.

Announcement

Street Hop was originally announced in 2006, and early rumors had fans speculating that Premier would produce the entire album. In September 2006, it was announced that DJ Premier would executive produce and contribute roughly half of the album's material, in addition to helping to select beats. In the same month, Royce was convicted of drunk driving, resulting in a parole violation and a prison sentence. After a year in prison, he prepared the release of the first The Bar Exam mixtape amid rumors that Nas was amenable to signing him to the rapper's Def Jam imprint, The Jones Experience.

Recording

Two albums were initially planned, the other being The Revival which was also to be overseen by Premier. While both albums would apparently have production from Havoc, Bink!, Hi-Tek, The Alchemist, 9th Wonder and others, The Revival was supposed to be released on Babygrande Records. After announcing The Bar Exam 2, a collection of songs entitled The Revival was leaked onto the Internet. Royce explained that it consisted of outdated rough cuts for Street Hop and that he was focused more on his mixtape than the supposed album. After the release of The Bar Exam 2, a retail version entitled The Bar Exam 2: The Album was sold in stores, which did have a collaboration with 9th Wonder.

After joining the New Jersey rapper Joe Budden, New Yorker Joell Ortiz and Californian Crooked I to form the four-man group Slaughterhouse, Royce had been busy recording and touring. He later returned to the studio for his own album with a new release date. Guests on the album include Bun B, Busta Rhymes, and the rest of Slaughterhouse. Videos were shot and released for the first two singles, "Shake This" (produced by DJ Premier) and "Part of Me" (produced by Carlos Broady), both directed by Rik Cordero. Before the album's release, the rapper released The Revival EP, a four-song collection including an appearance by the rest of Slaughterhouse.

[DISCUSSION] Sean Price - Monkey Barz (15 Years Later)

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 07:52 AM PDT

Monkey Barz is the solo debut studio album by underground hip hop artist Sean Price of Heltah Skeltah. The album was the first release from Duck Down Records 2005 "Triple Threat Campaign", followed by Buckshot & 9th Wonder's Chemistry, and Smif-N-Wessun's Smif 'N' Wessun: Reloaded. The album was possibly the most acclaimed of the three, and was named Independent Album of the Year by AllHipHop.com.

Music videos were shot for the songs "Peep My Words", "Onionhead", "Heartburn", "Boom Bye Yeah", "Monkey Barz" and "Slapboxing", which were included on Price's DVD Passion of the Price.

  • The art cover of this album is based on the Planet of the Apes series.
  • The bonus track, "Rising To The Top," was featured in the soundtrack of Grand Theft Auto III.
