| HHH Essential Album of the Week #112: UGK - Ridin' Dirty Posted: 15 Apr 2020 04:04 AM PDT Every Wednesday we will discuss an album from our Essential Album List Last Week: Nas - It Was Written This Week: UGK - Ridin' Dirty All previous posts: Here Stream/Purchase Background/Description UGK's third album, Ridin' Dirty, saw them scale to the top of the small but competitive 90s hip-hop scene in the South, creating a distinctive gangsta rap hybrid in the process. It is an undeniable classic. Pimp C handles the production almost exclusively, save for two co-productions and two guest producers. The album's content is just as hedonistic and braggadocios as their West Coast counterparts at the time, but they don't infuse their music with the deep funk of the Cali scene, nor do they revel in the buoyant bass of their Miami brethren. Instead, Pimp C crafted a smoother, sample-laden soundscape fit for any car sound system. "One Day" is a testament to the versatility and introspection that both Bun B and Pimp C were capable of, and stands as one of the most emotional and deep tracks made in hip-hop's short history. First we get Ron Isley's smooth voice over a slow and super-funky bass line before the drums and main melody hit. After an emotional verse from Pimp C, it's hard not to sing along as Isley serenades with a warning that "one day you here and then you gone." It is a fitting sentiment for a song that was penned and produced by a man who left us much too early. "One Day" was only the first track in what was a complete picture of life in Short Texas. "Murder" deals with the obvious and is the extreme opposite of the first track and explores the hypocrisy that seems to surround the best rappers. On the one hand, Bun B and Pimp C mourn over the senseless loss of life but on the other hand they too will stoop to that level if the situation calls for it (a dichotomy seemingly found in every era of hip hop music). "Pinky Ring" features a smooth and ultra funky beat that embodies the concept of a country rap tune, while Pimp C and Bun B indulge in the luxuries of being a rap star and getting the groupies. "Diamonds & Wood" samples a Houston classic for the hook and introduced the world to the car culture in Houston. "3 In The Mornin'" lets us know that true hustlers never sleep since the business stays open 24-7. "Touched" lets Bun B and Pimp C show off their storytelling skills as they warn others to mind their own business and not cross the wrong lines. "Fuck My Car" follows and is another hood anthem that got massive rotation in rides as UGK speak on groupies, declaring "they ain't tripping on me, they wanna fuck my car." "That's Why I Carry" finds the duo both venting and explaining why they feel compelled to carry guns. "Hi-Life" returns the duo to the more thought-provoking, introspective lyrics that kicked off the album as Pimp C reflects on his life and his quest to do some good during his lifetime. The group pumps things with a little energy next as "Good Stuff" is a raunchy sex-themed anthem. The title track ends the album, and for those not in the know this track and album was the inspiration for the Chamillionaire hit of the same name. | Posted: 15 Apr 2020 12:00 PM PDT Until a few years ago I was completely immersed in the classical world as a composer and never listened to really any contemporary hip hop or pop music. Then a friend played me Kanye's MBDTF album at a house party in Massachusetts where I was tripping on acid. I realized Kanye had the kind of platform I need to do some crazy shit with music and eventually help bring classical back into mainstream culture. A few years later my friend and I created Yeethoven, which used a live orchestra to mash-up Kanye and Beethoven and help explain why so many classical people love Kanye's production. Since then I've worked as a producer alongside Kanye, worked on Astroworld, produced for Lil Nas X, and spent countless days working in the studio with No I.D., Big Sean, Vic Mensa, THEY, Snoh Aalegra and others. | Posted: 15 Apr 2020 05:39 PM PDT Hey, I've been a member of this group for a few months now and have been amazed at the energy and passion I've seen. It inspired me and got me thinking about how I could make sharing and discovering music better for music heads like us. With this in mind, I got together with a couple friends and created a music-focused social app, "Chunes". The app has music-focused profiles and "community billboards" to showcase top music and curators and it would be awesome to see this in action with all of us (that's my vision at least). It connects directly with Spotify, Apple Music and Reddit so you can seamlessly listen to full songs, save songs to playlists and share both here and in-app with one tap. I reached out to some members in the community and engaged in some interesting conversations and go a few peeps to even try it out. Based on some feedback, I uploaded the beta version of the app to the App Store (working on one for Android users) to give a larger a group a chance to try it out: https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/chunes/id1459530573 I put some heart and soul into this, so don't be too critically, I hoping to fine tune it based on feedback and make it into something we can enjoy (since I got a little time from his COVID lock-down). I wanted to bring something cool and new to the forefront. I'm hoping and trying to take the thread to the next level.
