Recommended If You Like Thread - March 28, 2020

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

[DISCUSSION] Big L - Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous (25 years later)

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 03:55 AM PDT

Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous is the debut studio album by Big L. Released March 28, 1995 on Columbia Records. This is Big L's only album to be released during his lifetime. Production was handled by Buckwild, Lord Finesse, Showbiz and Craig Boogie.

The album debuted at number 149 on the US Billboard 200 and number 22 on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Album had three singles: ''Put it on'', ''M.V.P.'' and ''No Endz, No Skinz''.

Points for discussion:

- Does it still hold up?

- Favourite song, beat & bar

- Classic?

- Is Big L one of hip hop's history biggest ''what if''?

[Discussion] Common - Like Water for Chocolate (20 years later)

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 08:57 AM PDT

On March 28 of 2000, Common released Like Water for Chocolate, his fourth studio album and his first on a major label (MCA). Released to both commercial and critical acclaim, this album was also the latest in a line of classic albums - Things Fall Apart, Black on Both Sides, and Voodoo - made from with the creative input of the Soulquarian collective (which included the likes of Common, Q-Tip, Erykah Badu, J Dilla, D'Angelo, ?uestlove, Bilal, Mos Def, Roy Hargrove (RIP), etc.).

Please feel free to discuss anything pertaining this this album, but particularly:

  • General thoughts: How is the album? How has it held up? Favorite tracks? Favorite verses? etc.
  • How does this album compare to the rest of Common's discography? For context, it was preceded by One Day It'll All Make Sense and followed by the polarizing Electric Circus.
  • How does this compare to other efforts from the Soulquarians? (Nothing is topping Voodoo for me)
  • Does this album, Common's other albums, or Common overall as an artist get their due? Be is pretty popular around here, but what of Common's other work?

If you're gonna listen to this album for the first time, please do yourself a favor and listen to the version of Geto Heaven Pt. 2 that features D'Angelo.
