This sub has gone downhill

Posted: 22 Dec 2019 03:54 PM PST

Where have the in-depth discussions gone? Why is every post either [VIDEO] or [FRESH] and of super popular artists? We all have spotify, we all listen to rap caviar, we all keep up to date. Are we heads or juts imply people who love pop? Would be great to see actual album discussions, highlighting up and comers, some underground stuff and artists we don't know. I know its difficult to keep the integrity of a sub when it grows to such a size, but this place used to be at leasta tiny bit relevant/useful/interesting and now it's just a carbon copy of XXL's insta feed and the top 10 rap songs on whatever music service you use.

I don't know about you guys and girls but I used to come here daily and now I barely check in every two or three weeks.

Edit: I just want to make clear I do appreciate the work mods do to try and keep this a decent and civil place. I understand it's a thankless job and you do it for free. Happily chuck my hat in and say I'd be glad to help. Just because I've had great chats here with people and some decent insightful knowledge and thoughts and it's sad to see it being diluted, whether that's through too many newcomers or too many young people who don't give a fuck (same can be said for some olders too don't want to paint everyone with one brush there's obvs youngers looking to engage as well).

Edit 2: I'm sorry if it's not nice to hear for some of you. I've clearly hurt one or two egos and it wasn't my intention. But reaction to the post seems to confirm my thoughts and there's lots of interesting discussion on possible changes. Again appreciate the work that's done by mods but it doesn't mean we should stop improving. I want to be more active here, it was just a sharp and sudden drop off in quality that I saw that made me stop coming as often. As others have mentioned, it would be nice to not have to look through hundreds of comments to find interesting discussion and to be able to go back and read it more easily (harder to do when its comment threads and not text posts).

I'll be the first to admit yeah maybe I miss some stuff. I'll put my hands up and say I could be more active.

That's what I'm doing now. Mods giving hate, it's a real good advertisement of the kind of culture here. I want to help make a change. It's not really great being abused for that.

What was everyone’s favourite lyric from 2019? [Discussion]

Posted: 22 Dec 2019 04:13 PM PST

We got some damn great music in 2019. Curious to see what everyone's favourite specific lyric was. Be it for its genius, incredible rhyme, or just plain fun, would love to hear everyone's opinions.

Ten Years from now, how would you predict the state of hip hop?

Posted: 22 Dec 2019 04:51 PM PST

The sound. The cadence. The content. What would change? What would not?

Legacy of Cole, Drake, Kendrick, JID, everyone else popping rn.

Would Em still be around.

What do y'all think?

[DISCUSSION] In 2017, hip hop surpassed rock as the most popular music genre in America for the first time. What effect has this increased popularity had on the genre, its portrayal in the media, and place in pop culture? Will this popularity be sustained?

Posted: 22 Dec 2019 06:00 PM PST

The 2017 Nielsen's year-end report said that hip hop was the most popular genre and this continued in 2018.

What impact has hip hop becoming the dominant music genre had on the way rappers interact with broader pop culture? With what rappers are popular? Is there something unique about hip hop and streaming that made this inevitable?

Discussion - Lil B - 6 Kiss (10 Years Later)

Posted: 22 Dec 2019 11:14 AM PST

YouTube link to album

Background

On December 22, 2009, budding rap superstar Lil B released his second studio album "6 Kiss," a 22-track project that would soon cement itself as one of the most influential hip-hop releases of the century. It featured several of the Based God's most memorable songs, including "Let The Eagles Go," "Pretty Bitch," and "I'm God," which is often considered to be one of his best tracks. It also features heavy production from a then-young Clams Casino, now a household name in the "cloud rap" subgenre who gave birth to many major artists including A$AP Rocky. "6 Kiss" runs at just under 90 minutes, making it actually one of Lil B's shorter albums but still a journey from start to finish.

Discussion Questions

  1. What is your favorite song from this album, and if the answer is not the same, what is your favorite beat?

  2. Where does this rank amongst Lil B's many full-length projects?

  3. In what ways would the rap genre be different today if not for the impact of "6 Kiss," and Lil B as a whole?

Recommended If You Like Thread - December 21, 2019

Posted: 21 Dec 2019 10:04 AM PST

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

[DISCUSSION] Eminem - Relapse: Refill (10 Years Later)

Posted: 21 Dec 2019 05:27 AM PST

It's now been ten years since Em dropped the deluxe version of Relapse, with the songs Forever, Hell Breaks Loose, Buffalo Bill, Elevator, Taking My Ball, Music Box, Drop The Bomb On 'Em, My Darling and Careful What You Wish For. How y'all feeling after all this time? On the entirety of Relapse I don't think there's one song that I can say is bad, the deluxe tracks are fucking amazing and I still listen to this album regularly. Still want that Relapse 2 tho

This was our first real look at the crop of talent that Weezy brought together while he was still at the top of his career himself and they made it well known that YMCMB was fucking here and it was all Young Mula baby.

[Discussion] Are sites like Datpiff, LiveMixtapes, & Spinrilla even relevant anymore?

Posted: 21 Dec 2019 09:41 PM PST

Do people even use these anymore really? Over the past couple years I've been noticing most of the mainstream artists "mixtapes" are no longer dropped for free on these sites, they're all stream/buy. I remember a few years ago you could get Rich Homie Quan, Lil Wayne, Future, etc newest mixtapes for free; they'd be released w/a dj yelling some bullshit on the tracks but still free. With the shift to many of the bigger artists mixtapes no longer free, is there really any point to these sites anymore (other then to discover newer unsigned artists)? Are unsigned artists even really getting record deals b/c of streaming/downloads from Datpiff/etc anyway? I thought Soundcloud or YT were the big ones that were getting unsigned artists attention from labels.

[DISCUSSION] 21 Savage - i am > i was (1 Year Later)

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 09:35 PM PST

i am > i was is 21 Savage's second studio album, which dropped exactly a year ago after a series of halted drops. The Atlanta rapper's sophomore effort was met with universal critical acclaim, earning numerable star-studded reviews and an eventual nod at the 62nd Grammy Awards. Considered to be a complete turn in the artist's direction, the album's tracks from introspective & mellow ballads to classic, raspy hip hop deliveries. Supported by J. Cole, Childish Gambino, ScHoolboy Q, Post Malone, Travis Scott, and numerous other high-caliber features, 21 does not fail to deliver an album which exemplifies not only his growth as an artist, but a fully-developed version of a style which seemed embryonary on his debut album, Issa Album.

Tracklist

  1. a lot
  2. break da law
  3. a&t
  4. out for the night
  5. gun smoke
  6. 1.5

  12. pad lock
  13. monster
  14. letter 2 my momma
  15. 4L

What are your favorite tracks from the project? Where do you rank this in 21's discography? What do you expect from the St. Laurent Don in the future?

Grimes Claims Lil Uzi Vert Asked Her To Produce An EP & Then Ghosted Her

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 11:31 PM PST

While Grimes gears up for her fifth album, Miss Anthropocene, she just dropped by Beats 1, where she revealed that Lil Uzi Vert asked her to produce an EP for him—and then ghosted her.

"[Lil Uzi Vert] asked me to produce an EP for him once and then I sent him the WeTransfer and he never downloaded it. And I was like, 'Dude, I spent two weeks on this.' It hurt my feelings," she said. "I think 'Darkseid' is from that session. That's how I have all these weird rap beats. It's good when you can see when they don't download it because then you can like… Get mad at them. He hasn't done my manager and I see it. There's one day left or whatever to download. Your files have not been downloaded yet."

As Stereogum points out, this isn't Grimes' first spot of bad luck on a hip-hop collab. An earlier version of A$AP Ferg and Skrillex's "Hungry Ham" featured her harmonizing with the former artist—but her vocals were swapped with Crystal Caines' on the final version. There was also her infamous attempt to work with Azealia Banks last year.

Elsewhere in the interview, she told Zane Lowe that she feels good about her upcoming LP. "I actually think this album is extremely sick," she said. "This is probably my favorite album I've made. Which is shocking because usually I really hate my work in the year after I've made it." Earlier this year, she told Cultured Magazine that she thought her 2015 album Art Angels was a "piece of crap" and a "stain on my life."

At one point, the conversation turned to Post Malone, where she delivered this hot take: "I actually think Post Malone is underrated despite his extreme popularity, as an artist," she said. "I think he's made some of my favorite music of the decade." She also mentioned that she's a fan of Doja Cat and ROSALÍA.

The indie star will feature on the Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack, and she'll voice a character named Lizzy Wizzy. "I think my music fits with Night City because both are scary and pretty at the same time," she said in a video teaser for the game.
