J. Cole (and his team) continues to gyp his fans out of merch for over 1 year

Posted: 19 Jun 2019 09:31 PM PDT

I purchased an official, limited edition, autographed vinyl of J. Cole's KOD three days after the album first dropped from https://www.jcoleshop.com/. It is now June 2019, and I never received anything in the mail for this purchase. I received a shipping confirmation email on April 24th, 2018 and an email "Update Regarding Your Order from J. Cole" on September 14, 2018.

In that update email, someone from J. Cole's merch team said that "the signed LP jackets were damaged in transit and need to be re-manufactured and re-signed" ... "and these will now not ship out until late January 2019. We recognize that this is a long delay so if you would prefer to have your money refunded, please reply to this email to start that process."

I am a college student, so I quickly let this slip my mind and I forgot about it, until I randomly remembered earlier this month (June 2019) and decided to email the merch team asking for any updates. In his merch team's defense, I did receive a quick response (on June 7th, 2019), but it was not very helpful. All they said was that "unfortunately, we still do not have a confirmed timeline of when we will be receiving more inventory of the KOD Signed Vinyl."

They did also offer, again, to provide a refund, but I am a broke college student, so the likelihood of me being able to afford VIP tickets to get an autograph from one of my all-time favorite artists is little to none right now. I don't really want a refund. The $37 I paid is not going to change my life right now, but I would really value adding this vinyl to the little collection I'm starting to build up.

Please spare an upvote so that MAYBE some slight social media traction might provoke a more timely-effort to give J. Cole's supporters what they deserve. I can guarantee I am not the only one that this happened to.

*Edit: I have just learned that "gyp" is a derogatory slur that delegitimizes the plight of the Romanian (and Egyptian) people. For whatever reason, "jip" came to me when writing the title and I just quickly used google dictionary to get the correct spelling. I apologize for any insensitivity.

This article succinctly sums up the issue with the word: https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2013/12/30/242429836/why-being-gypped-hurts-the-roma-more-than-it-hurts-you

Also, if this edit/disclaimer triggers and offends you (for being too PC, or whatever), then get the fuck over it. Also, please send me my vinyl J. Cole. <3

Logic announces his own record label ‘Bobby Boy’ partnered with Def Jam & UMG, says new artists will be signed.

He announced it on Twitter.

Apparently it's a name change from his former self owned label 'Team Elysium' but the way he described it with his video it seems he will be focusing on it a lot more in the future.

The decline of remixes

Posted: 19 Jun 2019 02:42 AM PDT

I was having a friendly internet debate with a friend around my age (I'm 33) yesterday, and whose formative rap-listening years match mine (i.e. the ascendance of Pitchfork, mixtape-era Wayne, Gucci, Clipse etc.).

Anyway, I was saying that DJ Khaled's bloated song-model of throwing a bunch of different artists onto a track feels slightly outmoded these days, but that it was a staple back in the day: I often remember hearing a song, and then you'd inevitably end up with a remix where like 4 or 5 different rappers jump on .. for example, something like this: https://youtu.be/r49ydtBbghI . It's like artists really revelled in the excess of these bloated posse cuts and remixes.

I don't keep up with mainstream/radio stuff anymore, but I do feel like there's been a decline in these remixes in favor of sticking to official features on songs, and was wondering if anyone had any theories why?

[DISCUSSION] How has the death of the non-commercial mixtape effected hip hop?

Posted: 18 Jun 2019 09:35 AM PDT

From 2006 to 2013 the path to a career for so many artists was a mixtape with mostly original production: People aren't come up like Drake, Wale, J Cole, Kendrick, Action Bronson, Chance the Rapper, B.o.B, Big K.R.I.T., Chiddy Bang, Odd Future, Future, Mac Miller, Meek Mill, Schoolboy Q, SpaceGhostPurrp, The Weeknd, Wiz Khalifa, XV, 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Chief Keef, Dom Kennedy, Freddie Gibbs, Joey Bada$$, Charles Hamiton, The Cool Kids, Flatbush Zombies, Kevin Gates, Lil Durk, G Herbo, Lucki, Mick Jenkins, Saba, PND, Travis Scott, Ab-Soul, Das Racist, Kid Cudi, Jay Electronica, Lupe Fiasco, A$AP Rocky, Earthgang, Cyhi The Prynce

With these tapes being replaced with commercial tapes, it seems like artists need to build up a lot more buzz before they release the modern equivalent of these non-commercial mixtapes with mostly original production because it's a bigger risk and requires sample clearing and dealing with royalties with producers, etc.

Then there's the tapes were people rap over other people's beats. It seems like the number of these has gone down. There's still people that do it like Wayne and Royce Da 5'9" and Big K.R.IT. It seems like for most artists though this has been replaced with doing one off freestyles. Tapes with mostly original production used to have a couple of other people's beats too. It was dope to hear Kendrick rap over the Roots or J Cole make Villmatic.

It also seems like artists have been able to clear other people's beats much easier.

With artists having to clear everything they put out now, do you think this has been limiting for smaller rappers who can't afford clearance.

I saw someone a couple days ago that the constant leaks we've been seeing for a while might be reflective of free mixtapes being gone.

How do you think this has influenced what type rappers make it or how rappers go about coming? Any other thoughts?
