Kodak Black's rape trial moved from April to the summer or early fall

Posted: 06 Apr 2019 10:09 AM PDT

The State interviewed 12th Circuit Solicitor Ed Clements:

Although the popular rapper is on tour in the Southeast, he will likely have to return to South Carolina in either the summer or early fall, 12th Circuit Solicitor Ed Clements said in an interview with The State on Thursday.

"I'm hoping to get it up for disposition by then," Clements said, after announcing the trial that was tentatively scheduled for April was continued to the later date.

Clements confirmed to The State that the girl was not a minor when the crime occurred; otherwise the charges would have been different to reflect that.

After he was released, Kodak Black agreed to be swabbed and the prosecutor's office has his DNA, Clements told The State.

"We are slowly but steadily moving toward a disposition," said Clements, who told The State the rapper could face a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison if convicted, but there are several lesser sentences he could face related to the same criminal sexual conduct charge. "I want to do justice for the victim, whatever that takes."

Kodak allegedly raped a high school student in a hotel room in South Carolina following a concert in 2016. She told a school nurse about the alleged rape who informed the school resource officer before the information was eventually brought to the attention of the Florence County Sheriff's Office. Kodak allegedly bit the victim on her neck and right breast and those injuries were documented in a rape kit.

hiphopheads Essential Album of the Week #106: 2Pac - All Eyez On Me

Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:09 AM PDT

Welcome to the new and improved Essential Album of the Week discussion thread!

Every Wednesday we will discuss an album from our Essential Albums list

Last Time: B.G. - Chopper City

This Week: 2Pac - All Eyez On Me

Stream/Purchase

Spotify

Apple Music

Google Play

Background/Description (courtesy of allmusic.com)

Maybe it was his time in prison, or maybe it was simply his signing with Suge Knight's Death Row label. Whatever the case, 2Pac re-emerged hardened and hungry with All Eyez on Me, the first double-disc album of original material in hip-hop history. With all the controversy surrounding him, 2Pac seemingly wanted to throw down a monumental epic whose sheer scope would make it an achievement of itself. But more than that, it's also an unabashed embrace of the gangsta lifestyle, backing off the sober self-recognition of Me Against the World. Sure, there are a few reflective numbers and dead-homiez tributes, but they're much more romanticized this time around. All Eyez on Me is 2Pac the thug icon in all his brazen excess, throwing off all self-control and letting it all hang out -- even if some of it would have been better kept to himself. In that sense, it's an accurate depiction of what made him such a volatile and compelling personality, despite some undeniable filler. On the plus side, this is easily the best production he's ever had on record, handled mostly by Johnny J (notably on the smash "How Do U Want It") and Dat Nigga Daz; Dr. Dre also contributes another surefire single in "California Love" (which, unfortunately, is present only as a remix, not the original hit version). Both hits are on the front-loaded first disc, which would be a gangsta classic in itself; other highlights include the anthemic Snoop Dogg duet "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted," "All About U" (with the required Nate Dogg-sung hook), and "I Ain't Mad at Cha," a tribute to old friends who've gotten off the streets. Despite some good moments, the second disc is slowed by filler and countless guest appearances, plus a few too many thug-lovin' divas crooning their loyalty. Erratic though it may be, All Eyez on Me is nonetheless carried off with the assurance of a legend in his own time, and it stands as 2Pac's magnum opus.

Guidelines

This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is your chance to practice being a critic. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!!

How has this album affected hip-hop? WHY do you like this tape? What are the best tracks? Do you think it deserves the praise it gets? Is it the first time you've listened to it? What's your first impression? Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't.

DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BEING LATE!!!! Discussion throughout the week is encouraged.

Next week's EAOTW will be Fugees - The Score

It's been one year since the release of the Flatbush Zombies 4th project and 2nd studio album. Favourite tracks? Overall thoughts on the album? How does it compare to their previous projects? What are you looking forward to hearing from the Zombies next?

Personally, ViH was one of my most anticipated releases in 2018 and it didn't disappoint. It was my AOTY and comfortably my most played album of 2018. Amazing features and production, and some incredible tracks in Headstone, HELL-O, U&I and Big Shrimp. Upon release, some criticised the album for being too long (19 tracks). I'd agree that it was slightly too long, but there was still 13 or 14 really great tracks that I kept in consistent rotation. Other favourite tracks for me are Best American, Vacation, Chunky, Crown, Facts, M.Bison and Facts. Looking forward to the imminent Beast Coast project.

[DISCUSSION] Saba - CARE FOR ME (1 Year Later)

Posted: 04 Apr 2019 12:05 PM PDT

CARE FOR ME can be found at or near the top of many publications 'top albums of the year' lists. It was my personal album of the year for 2018, and I know for a fact it was up there for many other HHH users as well.

Compared to the vibrant, spirit-lifting bounce that his debut album "Bucket List Project" gave us, this one takes a complete 180, with darker themes, slower tempos, and stripped back instrumentals

Having much to do with the untimely death of Saba's cousin, Walter, this album is about stories from the past, grieving, honesty, introspection, and ultimately, acceptance.

I believe Saba cemented himself as one of the best new talents in the rap game with this tape, and also proved that he's one of the best storytellers in rap. The 10-track length feels perfect, and the features are on point (besides Chance's verse, never been too crazy about that part). It was entirely produced by Saba, daedaePIVOT, and Daoud, which really gives it a feel of cohesion.

After a year, I'll say that this project really means a lot to me, and I'd give it a score of 9.5/10 with my favorite tracks being: BUSY/SIRENS, LIFE, FIGHTER, & GREY

What did you guys think about Saba's sophomore album?

J.Cole - 4 Your Eyez Only in chronological order of the story

Posted: 04 Apr 2019 06:37 AM PDT

So I made a comment a few days ago that said I thought 4 Your Eyez Only would be considered a masterpiece if Cole had changed the tracklisting so the story and narrative were more obvious from the beginning.

After FHD, people weren't expecting an album that told one long, stoic story about someone Cole knew from the Ville. People were expecting FHD 2.0 when this project was very different from anything Cole had done before. It's much, much darker than anything else he's done. Me and several of my friends didn't initially like it, but personally, I've come around to see Cole's vision.

He even considered retirement before this album. Looking back he was really hurt after losing whoever James was in real life. Putting some of the humor and lightheartedness that was in FHD would feel misplaced in this album. Putting it in order makes the narrative clear, and makes listening to it a lot easier to follow.

I went ahead and put it in chronological order of how the story goes.

  1. For Whom the Bell Tolls - James (Cole's friend from the Ville that was renamed to protect his identity) is good at heart and doesn't want to be a criminal. He wants something to change but the only place he can turn he crime. He prays to the lord as he sees the storm coming, and knows he's running out of options.

  2. Neighbors - Two options here: James starts to partake in illegal activities (selling dope) early in his life and is charged with 2 felonies, or setting up the rampant racism that follows people no matter how big they make it. I know this song is about the police raiding Cole's crib in real life but it can apply to James falling into the trap the system set for him. The arrogance shown ("motha fucka, I am") goes away after being caught and he's humbled a bit but feels empty. This song is like the "Wake Me Up When September Ends" of this album. It's a great song and sonically fits but has very little to do with the narrative unless you make tenuous links.

  3. Deja Vu - James finding the love of his dreams and believing he found destiny. He wants it more than anything but she's taken.

  4. She's Mine pt. 1 - James fulfills what he thinks is his destiny and starts a relationship with the love of his life. He's found the woman he loves and that she loves him back. He began to feel that void in his life being filled. In KOD Cole even talks about how people who lack love feel the need to self medicate. James now has love.

  5. Ville Mentality - James is wondering if he can go on as a criminal now that he has someone he loves so much. He wants to live a long life with her and knows that can't happen if he continues the life of crime. Like I mentioned, Cole believes self medication comes from a lack of love shown to addicts starting from a young age. James filled that hole by falling into the trap the crooked system set for him but pulls himself out of it by falling in love with a female human.

  6. Foldin Clothes - James is abandoning the gangster lifestyle to be with his girl. Finding that life pre-For Whom the Bell Tolls is a lot better when you have someone that you love with you going through it together.

  7. She's Mine pt. 2 - James is having his child, Nina, and learning what the unconditional love of fatherhood feels like. His heart is filling up and he's feeling more love than he's ever felt before.

  8. Change - James begins to spread word that change can happen in the black community internally. There is a lot of external forces causing blacks to be suppressed but there's also a lot of internal issues. But James gets caught in the crossfire and dies from what he was trying to change.

  9. Immortal - Cole remembering James. The eulogy from the end of Change leads itself into this really well. This is the biggest change. This song makes no sense being number 2 on the orignal track listing. This is obviously Cole mourning James, but when it's at 2, no one even knows what the album is about yet, now that we've heard what happened to James, we can see why Cole sounds like he's holding back tears and the song becomes much more emotional.

  10. 4 Your Eyez Only - Cole tells Nnia the story of James.

tl;dr: 4 Your Eyez Only is out of order and I put it in order to make the narrative clear.

I made it into a playlist on Spotify if you wanna see if you feel it works better this way
