Sunday General Discussion - March 17th, 2019

What's your favourite type of Apple? I'm preferable to a pink lady or maybe a nice Fuji

Watch some Street Figher while you mull it over

How do you kick someone from discord? There's this Scandanavian idiot named Wilfredo and he simply will not leave no matter how hard I try to convince him

Any ideas for the sidebar or sub in general? Don't post em, don't care

Shoutout to /u/chrussell for being the best mod, I think we should all say why we're thankful for him in this thread

[DISCUSSION] Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Piñata (5 Years Later)

Posted: 17 Mar 2019 07:02 PM PDT

Piñata is the first collaborative album by rapper Freddie Gibbs and producer Madlib.

In a press release in 2014, Freddie Gibbs described Piñata as "a gangster Blaxploitation film on wax. I will show you my flaws, I'll show you what I've done wrong and what I've fucked up at.... I don't regret shit, but I'll show you the things I'm not proud of. I'm about to show niggas how to rap again."

Madlib added "My stuff, it ain't fully quantized… it has more of a human feel, so it might slow down or speed up. So you have to be the type of rapper, like MF Doom or Freddie, who can catch that, or else you'll be sounding crazy."

The album was released to widespread acclaim from critics, and has gone on to be regarded by fans as one the classic hip-hop albums of this decade.

What are your thoughts on this album 5 years since it was released?

  • Favorite tracks?

Do producers ever get paid?

Posted: 17 Mar 2019 07:48 PM PDT

I love watching Genius's "deconstructed" vids where they go through how producers make the beats for rappers. But half the time the producer is like "yeah I send the beat to __ and a week later it was on the top 100. I heard it on the radio". Do these guys make a living? Their work is so crazy important that it blows me away to think they might not be getting compensated for that shit.

Have you ever felt sad that Lil Uzi Vert never again made anything that sounded like “Right Now” off the first Luv Is Rage tape?

Posted: 16 Mar 2019 09:35 PM PDT

So LIR 1 was his first commercial debut mixtape. For me what I loved so much about the first Luv Is Rage entry was how unpolished it was. Uzi was still experimenting with his sound here and I don't know if Atlantic records knew how hot of a commodity he would become, or just accepted the natural progression of soundcloud rap into curvy, precise auto-tuned drawl.

What uzi did that in my opinion no other rapper did at the time was really experimenting with how far he took the filter. I know some people won't agree with that but here's the point of the post. If you go back to the song "right now" and listen to it this is what you hear

What seems like dozens of Uzi's voice tracks layered on top of one another, especially on the bridge

A very cold, very simple two-note synth marking the backbone of the melody

Uzi's dreary, neon-drenched lyrics- "sorry baby girl I gotta go right now Even tho I want you I can't take you home right now Ima let you take the number to my phone right now You gon force me just to get up in my zone right now"

I know, I know, you're thinking those lyrics aren't very effective or interesting at all, and you're mostly right. But that's the point

uzi can take very simple lines, and repeat them 4x and make it the catchiest joint on the block. The first 9-11 words in each line start with a more rapid two-syllable alternating delivery followed by the same ending for each line drawn out, "right now"

why does this matter? He probably didn't have to think about it. He probably never wrote the song down. Uzi is the rare breed who has the real talent and charisma to make a song like this just jamming in the studio - after all, that's literally what XO Tour Lyfe was. That was an OLD beat that TM88 sped up and added a couple things to and Uzi emailed the beat back with his part on it within a day

within this mixtape Uzi proved he could come up with hit tracks on the spot, and of course his friendships with producers TM88, metro boomin and Donny digital ("Right Now"'s producer) the man knows where to find a beat when he needs one

my favorite part about this song is how it uses relatively shallow, simple lyrics to genuinely create a feeling of melancholy. Uzi's droning, compressed and squeezed voice, literally undulating against the beat, enunciates words like he's chewing on marshmallows or smoking two massive Cuban cigars

that's the point: Uzi is showing with this commercial debut that he stands head and shoulders above other rappers because he doesn't give a fuck about fame, he doesn't even care if you know what the fuck he's saying. he just loves making the music. In my opinion the dreary, soft-footed instrumented track the vocals are mixed with sounds amazing.

Many of Uzi's songs are like this even to this day. About girls, cars and materialism. That's not change from the old tape of course, but what I have been sorry to see go is Uzi's enunciation-less lyrics.

his auto tune is tuned to a far more whiny, aggressive sound and in songs like "new patek" it literally almost starts to get grinding

I've now spent way too much time on this. Random topic

[DISCUSSION] Chuck Strangers - Consumer’s Park (1 Year Later)

Posted: 16 Mar 2019 03:26 PM PDT

I personally think this album fell under the radar for a lot of people, you can tell that Chuck really matured and refined his raps on this, and what's even more impressive, is that he produced 12 out of the 14 tracks.

I think this album is one with potent lyricism that grows on you with each listen, especially with this being his debut album, chuck completely exceeded my expectations. I'd give it a 8.5/10 with my favorite tracks being 'Thoro Hall', '1010 Wins Pt. 1 & Pt. 2', and 'Class Pictures'.

What did you guys think of this project?
