That's Love ! An Oddisee guide.

Posted: 29 Jan 2019 09:32 AM PST

Amir Mohamed el Khalifa, also known as Oddisee is an underground rapper and producer from Washington D.C.. He's apart of the Diamond District group and he's signed under Mello Music Group alongside rappers like Quelle Chris, Skyzoo and (used to be signed) Open Mike Eagle.

The reason I'm making this guide is that I consider Oddisee a top-notch rapper and a criminally underrated producer. He has a lengthy discography that I believe could scratch an itch for a large amount of people who haven't been exposed to him as an artist.

I. The Rapper and the Producer.

Oddisee has been making music for over a decade, his first mixtapes go as far back as 2005, and his first album available on a streaming platform, 102, was released in 2008.

Oddisee's breaking point (relative to the underground still) is probably between 2012 and 2013, where he released People Hear What The See, the instrumental album The Beauty in All, and Tangible Dream, which are all great projects and with songs like Own Appeal and Killin Time that are still his biggest to date.

Style-wise, Oddisee's rapping has consistently evolved throughout his career. His first mixtape Foot In The Door sound reminiscent of Clipse / Tribe on some songs, as well as old soulful Kanye on some others. Since 2015, he essentially dropped cursing from his music. His last two albums have been completely clean, even omitting the n-word. Here are his takes on it.

His first studio album, 102, had a few solo tracks from him but most of tracks were beat remixes of his last beat tape. We had to wait until 2012 with People Hear What They See to get a full-blown album where he rapped on every track. In my opinion, he hasn't dropped the ball since, and every follow up has been between great and phenomenal.

The most odd [pun intended] thing about Oddisee's music, is that he is an distinctly underground rapper with a discography that could blow up any day. I've seen a lot of memes that said that Oddisee is what J.Cole thinks he sounds like. And honestly? It's not that far from the truth. His music isn't overtly experimental, his production is soulful, and his content could please a large audience. If any already-famous artist dropped any one of his recent albums, they could probably be considered classics considering how quality they are.

Oddisee's pen gets more impressive with each project. He's always been a solid lyricist, but ever since The Tangible Dream his artistry continued to skyrocket. His style is pretty much the whole-package; he has shown great storytelling ability, like in You Grew Up:

Let me take it back to my childhood

When Six Flags was still called Wild Wood

Where I had every race as a neighbor

We were all working class, trying to make it out of our hood

My best friend back then was a white kid

We was tight he liked the same things I did

[...]

But things changed when his pops got laid off

He blamed my father for the loss of his job

He said immigrants robbed citizens jobs

And I better never set foot again in his yard

[...]

As we became adults in a cult called America, he got himself a job as an officer of law

My thoughts got blacker and his views got cracker

There was no way backwards, to the roots at heart

Many years apart, I recognized him in the news

He shot a black man that was sitting in his car

Near the same park where we used to shoot hoops

And all I could blame was the cause

You Grew Up

Or in his showcasing of flow/rhyme schemes, in what is probably his most famous song to date, Own Appeal:

'Cause the dream feel real'er than it ever been

And I was aiming high like a nigga being president

The possibilities of that are seeming pretty evident

So being self employed is now seeming like a definite

But staying that way is what I'm F'ing with

And like minded people be the only ones I'm messing with

Oddisee said himself that he was mainly inspired by rappers like De La Soul or A Tribe Called Quest that showed another side of rap that doesn't focus on drugs and violence. Stating that he doesn't related to these themes, instead choosing to speak on what happened in his life or straight up life lessons/uplifting music. He's pretty close to a rapper Phonte, a rapper over soulful live instrumentation. Funny enough, they are touring and might do a collab with each other soon.

Oddisee is also a fantastic performer; his NPR appearance, Colors, and his live version of The Goings On are on-par with the live version if not better.

Oddisee is not only a great rapper, but also a brilliant producer. Like I said previously, he started off doing songs remixes then later found the confidence to make his own beat tapes. Most of his beat tapes follow a certain concept/main theme around it.

In my opinion, his best beat tape is The Odd Tape which is basically an instrumental journey throughout the day, from waking up to coming home and going to sleep which each song describing a specific moment.

Instead of using a lot of samples like a DJ Shadow, Madlib or J.Dilla would do, Oddisee has a lot of live instruments in his beats and mostly creates his own melodies from scratch.

II. Recommendations.

As far as rapping album goes, I would say The Good Fight is the best introduction to his music and arguably his best album. Then you have two choices, you either go further down that album's soulful path with The Iceberg/ People Hear What They See or you go back in the past to his more gritty style back when he was cursing with Tangible Dream.

Most of his beat tapes are great too. As I said The Odd Tape is my favorite of his because it's a great studying/driving album, Traveling Man is pretty much Oddisee making a song for every city he visited at the time and trying to mimic their sound. The Beauty In All is probably his most emotionally-sounding beat tape.

That's it for my guide, feel free to ask any questions or share any thoughts about what you've listened to

Have a question that you need answered? Was it not answered last week? Did not get a satisfying answer? Or a question that you feel is too small to make a new thread for? Maybe something you think everyone but you knows?

Ask that question in this thread.

Questions must be on topic, concise, and answerable. Answers must be a real answer that solves the question. Do not ask a question that can be covered in the resources section.

A Boogie apparently scams reseller for $10K worth of sneakers (50 pairs)

Posted: 28 Jan 2019 01:15 PM PST

TL;DR: A Boogie's "assistant" has sneaker reseller drive to his house in NJ and drop off 50 pairs of sneakers and tells him that he'd pay him "later". Never gets paid and ducks him repeatedly. A Boogie knowingly allows this to happen and still has not paid the kid.
