Nocturnal is the third Boot Camp click release, coming after the 1993 album Black Moon - Enta Da Stage, one of the first albums part of the new east coast hardcore sound that contributed towards the so-called renaissance that was emerging in New York (36 Chambers, Midnight Marauders, Bacdafucup etc), and also Smif-N-Wessun's Dah Shinin that dropped in 1995, both of which were were entirely produced by Da Beatminerz. Both albums were popular, with 'Who Got da Props?' and 'Bucktown' being big hits in New York. Ruck (aka Sean Price) and Rock made their first appearance on the posse cut Cession At Da Doghillee from Dah Shinin.

The duo Ruck & Rock formed was named Heltah Skeltah, but they made their first appearance under the name 'Fab 5' along with Da Origanoo Gun Clappaz, a newer Boot Camp Clik sub-group trio, on the underground hit single 'Leflaur Leflah Eshkoshka' that came out in October '95. The song was enough of a hit to make them a decent check, so Nocturnal had solid funding (just look how fancy their studio was) as well as recieving backing from Boot Camp Clik's newly formed label 'Duck Down Records' led by Dru Ha & Buckshot. After also dropping the single Operation Lockdown, Nocturnal released in June 1996. Nocturnal went on to sell around 250,000 copies.

This albums rapping is where it departs from earlier Boot Camp Clik releases, where most creativity was focused on the flows and delivery. Ruck & Rock are top tier MCs and lyricists with great chemistry but also with very distinct styles. Rock has a more commanding tone with a deep ass voice, just punching out bars while Ruck had a lower, faster and jumpier flow, quite different from the solo Sean Price of the 2000s. What Ruck & Rock have in common is that they rip their verses consistently on here, showing off rugged lyrical skills. Subject matter is rooted in gangsterisms but it's littered with more bizarre topics and references, giving it this bad trip on some grimey street at night atmosphere. Just one quote to showcase how aggressive the bars get:

My brass knuckles make your knees buckle. What, duke?

I lay more niggas flat out on their back than a slut do

Who knows what you seem to be? I didn't gas you

But you can keep it moving 'fore I beat your gassed ass, you

Punk bastard, you could get the gat quick or your ass

Kicked. That dry shit your lips spit? Get the Chapstick

Or a fat dick, and that's it.

There are some departures from this though, including the more smooth 'Therapy', and a few more humorous skits. There are also plenty of guest MCs, including all of Da Origanoo Gun Clappaz (Starang especially which is good because he's great), the Brownsville underground duo 'Representativz', and Illa Noyz, and they all come on their A-game for two posse cuts.

Nocturnal is the first Boot Camp Clik album to not be fully produced by Da Beatminerz. E-Swift (of Tha Alkoholiks), and also a handful of more underground Brooklyn producers contribute about half of the beats, and Da Beatminerz the other half. The sound is very grimey on most tracks, sometimes laid back but for the most part hard hitting with dark samples that could fit on a horrorcore album. Generally the album samples jazz albums, twisting little loops to sound sinister in a way similar to how Havoc did on The Infamous, but with a more hard hitting, booming approach.

If you're listening and wonder why it seems they're rapping about Decepticons (like the ones from Transformers), that was the name of a Brooklyn street gang) they were part of, which was present in New York from the late 80s, before either Bloods or Crips were. Sticky Fingaz from Onyx & Steele from Smif-N-Wessun were also members. Jay Z even mentions them on BK Anthem, "Wasn't safe on the A train, D, G or the F, Decepticons, Lo-Life niggas snatch the Polo off your chest", they were pretty notorious for a while, even if few in number.

The album is the first album to fully feature Sean Price (Ruck). Heltah Skeltah went on to release another album in '98, that featured names like Method Man and Tha Dogg Pound as well as even more of the Boot Camp Clik, and it was a solid album but a commercial flop, partially due to not fitting into the emerging popularity of the shiny suit Diddy style, but also due to Heltah Skeltah being banned from Hot 97 radio play because Sean Price slapped one of their security guards in the Hot 97 office (allegedly in self defence). Their career stagnated around there and it took until around 2003 for Sean Price to start trying to make waves in New York's underground, inspired by Ghostface Killah's Surpeme Clientele. His first mixtape came out in '03 and built enough buzz to build interest in his debut solo album, Monkey Barz, that went on to become a New York underground classic, and the start of a great solo career.

Aminé (pronounced UH-MEAN-AY), born Adam Aminé Daniel, is a 24 year old rapper from Portland, Oregon. Born to immigrant parents, Aminé says that music was a large part of his household growing up. He started rapping in high school, writing tracks about rival schools after being cut from the basketball team, dashing his longtime dream to "be Kobe Bryant." He released 3 projects independently on the internet from 2014-15, stirring a local buzz, that caught the attention of promoters, Complex, and even Portland Trail Blazers star point guard, Damian Lillard. But his rise was not without controversy. A look into Aminé's career beginnings will show an apparent bitterness towards him from some of Portland's young creatives. Videographers, managers and others say Aminé does not give them credit, or respect for their assistance in his come-up. Whether this is simply salt from jealous former friends who didn't achieve the success Aminé has, or if he truly wronged them in some way, we will probably never know. Aminé has never publicly commented on the situation. But to the joys of Aminé's friends and family, and disappointment of his early haters, his 2016 commercial debut single, Caroline, put him on the map, quickly making him hip-hop's face of the 503, which had never truly had a star. Caroline, which has since amassed well over 200 million views on Youtube, was followed by singles Baba and REDMERCEDES. After signing to Republic Records shortly after, his debut album, Good For You, was released in June of 2017. Around that same time, Adam was selected to the 2017 XXL Freshman List. Now, looking to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump, or worse, be labeled a one hit-wonder, his second project, ONEPOINTFIVE, came the following year, releasing August 15th, 2018. Not exactly a mixtape, but not quite the follow-up album that fans were expecting, Aminé dubbed this collection of songs an "EPLPMIXTAPEALBUM" In a rap scene that frequently blurs the line between a mixtape, and a studio album Aminé seems to poke fun at this distinction. Recorded in the same studio in Hawaii that Kanye West recorded his 2007 classic, Graduation, Aminé says he was planning on recording his second album. However plans changed. On how the project came to be he said "I knew this producer TeeWatt from like 4 years ago and I randomly ran into him at a party in LA the day before I was headed to Hawaii to work on my second album. He sent me a pack of beats that wasn't what I was looking for, for my second album but they were fire lol. He sent me the WHY? and REEL IT IN beat so I just recorded those for fun with no plan. But then, those songs made me wanna make more music like in that in hawaii so we made BLACKJACK and SHINE the next day. And then I just kept making more music like that instead of working on my 2nd album and here we are today…" So, with a hazy mission, an unexpected beat pack, and a creative environment previously graced by legends, Aminé created what would become ONEPOINTFIVE, the best, (and probably the only) EPLPMIXTAPEALBUM of 2018.

Sad on yo motherfucking b-day? Bitch what the fuck?

says the album intro, voiced by YouTuber Rickey Thompson. The melodic beat kicks in quickly after, with Aminé chiming in with a vocal backing, a sample that he created out of his own voice. The moody vibe is immediately unlike the majority of Aminé's previous album. He has given listeners more introspective songs before, (Turf, Sundays). But this song touches on heavier topics than we heard addressed on 2017's Good For You. Aminé is, literally, treating the listener as a therapist. Immediately it's clear that the usually playful, and humorous Aminé, has heavier things on his mind, at least for now. Touching on his personal suicidal thoughts, strained relationships with his family, and a reminiscent look at his adolescent experience, he then drops a surprise, (that actually wasn't very hard to see coming). He and "Ms. Parrish", better known as R&B singer Kehlani, at one point, had a relationship of some sort. After collaborating on Aminé's previous album, rumors circulated around them for awhile. Aminé seems to be getting a lot off of his chest on this song, and he said it was one of the harder songs he has recorded. But after airing his troubles to the millions of Doctor Whoever's sitting at home, Rickey Thompson comes back with a decisive outro, "Get your shit together and turn the fuck up!" This sudden change of pace, will ultimately set the tone for the rest of the project. Any anxieties Aminé was feeling on "DR. WHOEVER" are quickly gone on "HICCUP". His braggadocio betrays the mental health issues he told us about just 2 minutes earlier. All cares are gone and Aminé has some flexing to catch up on. This victory lap of a song is more reminiscent of someone at the peak of their success than a kid with one billboard hit to his name. If the project has a weak point this is probably it. However Aminé only improves on the eccentric trap inspired sound as the album continues. The Gunna feature is solid, if not a little bit forgettable, but his melodic delivery rides the beat nicely. "REEL IT IN" is Aminé's biggest commercial success on ONEPOINTFIVE, with the music video (NSFW) totaling 18 million views on YouTube in about three months. The song made decent buzz, despite not quite cracking the Hot 100. With a disgustingly catchy hook, and a Gucci Mane assisted remix, it is a little surprising this song didn't garner more mainstream attention. The production on BLACKJACK, is easily some of the best on the tape, and it is worth noting that Aminé himself is credited as one of three producers on the track. The song is not even two minutes long, which coupled with the fast vocal delivery, adds to the extremely fast pace of the project. Aminé makes sure to throw us a Jack Black reference in here to remind us of his love for film. The confidence is through the roof once again on this song, and I think there might have been more humble brags in the last three songs than there was in the entirety of Good For You. But just like that, with an abrupt transition, the fast pace is dialed back, and we are hearing from the Dr. Whoever version of Aminé again. No boasts, just real life stress from a real life guy dealing with real life problems. The chimey beat and adlibs give "WHY" a lighter feel than the lyrical content actually portrays. Lines like,

they let me skip the DMV line, that's when I knew it was real

give Aminé an almost humorous level of relatability, that strips away the larger than life rapper persona he has taken on in the last few tracks, and makes him feel distinctly normal. He becomes less of a rapper, and more of just a guy who raps. Moving into "SHINE", Aminé stays in his feelings, and by this point it genuinely feels like there are two characters on this project. We are hearing from Aminé on tracks like "REEL IT IN", and more from Adam on "SHINE". Hearing a little more of Aminé's singing voice on this track is interesting as the high pitched chorus is a stark contrast to his deep rap voice. I hope to hear even more singing tracks from him in the future as he seems to really know how to use his voice well. For the second time now, the project goes zero to one hundred with "CHINGY". This is the closest thing to straight up trap music we have heard from Aminé in his short career, and as soon as the barely two minute track was over I was thirsty for more. The production is simple, but complements the vocals perfectly, allowing the lyrics to take center stage and hit hard. Not that the lyricism is necessarily anything to write home about, but once again the contrast from track to track is what makes the arrogant bars stand out. And "bitch you know I do my damn thing" is guaranteed to be stuck in your head for awhile. G Herbo lends a hand for the second feature of the album on "DAPPERDAN". The pace doesn't slow up with this track, and it is immediately another ear worm. I would love to see Aminé start getting some mainstream features doing hooks for other artists, because every one on here is extremely engaging, even if they are a bit repetitive. As catchy as Caroline was, it's hard to believe it's the only song on these two tapes to get any radio time. Poking fun at "Jenny, Becky, and Samantha" the white women who want to touch his hair, and naming the song after his hair product of choice, "CANTU" is the standout of the back third of the album which doesn't let off the gas at all. The track closes with another Rickey Thompson outro. "SUGARPARENTS" gives us a feature from Rico Nasty, who had an album of the year contender of her own with Nasty. If I had to pick a personal least favorite song on this project, it would be this one, but the chemistry between Aminé and Rico, was surprisingly really good, so another collab from the two would be more than welcome. The energy of the album crescendos on "STFU2" (sequel to Good For You's, "STFU") before finally hitting it's absolute peak on the first verse of "RATCHETSATURNGIRL",

I like when shawty do the dummy on my dick raw

pretty much sums up the entire mood of the extremely sexual track, before one of the most abrupt beat switches of the year throws the listener for a loop. If the first half of "RATCHETSATURNGIRL" is about everything Aminé loves from this mystery woman in bed, the second half is about everything else, turning it into a genuine love song. This transitions us into the album closer, "TOGETHER", where Aminé goes more in depth about this person he can't seem to get over. My immediate complaint with ONEPOINTFIVE upon it's release was the lack of track to track cohesion. I still appreciated the music as a collection of good songs, or maybe a mixtape, or EP, but the melancholy tracks sprinkled in didn't seem to fit with the rest of the project, which to me, held it back from that level of replayability, that would earn it a spot on my year end list. But after (a lot) more listens, I found that these sudden switch ups are exactly what makes this project feel very refined and intentional. Anyone who has ever lived with anxiety, will tell you that there is no predicting when it is going to hit. Sometimes when you're at your absolute highest, something quickly cuts you down. On this tape, every time Aminé reaches his highest point of energy, and confidence, he quickly spirals back down. The story that this anxiety seems to tell, makes the short project feel like a fully fleshed out, LP, or album, and a great one at that. Maybe he's onto something with this whole EPLPMIXTAPEALBUM thing? That's all folks… Ta-ta now Rickey's voice fades out one last time, bringing ONEPOINTFIVE to an end just as quickly and ambiguously as it began. With Aminé caught in an in-between phase of his career, and apparently his relationships. No longer a newcomer, but not quite a superstar, in some ways he seems on the outside looking in. There is no way to know how he feels about it, except tuning in your speakers, and becoming his Dr. Whoever.

Background

Denzel Rae Don Curry is a rapper from carol city, florida, He was made popular by florida rapper SpaceGhostPurrp. Denzel Curry'sTA13OO is Denzel Curry's third project, his others being 32 Zel and Imperial. The album is split into three parts or "acts", the first being Light(The Beginning), the second being Gray(The Middle), and the third being Dark(The end). The first three acts represents the three stages of his life.

Track By Track Review

ACT 1

TA13OO:

This is a nice and melodic song from Denzel Curry, has a nice beat and has a vibey but catchy hook. In the song, he welcomes the listener to the lighter side of the TA13OO as this is the first track of the first act(light). This song talks about molestation and he talks about a girl who was grown up suffering horrible abuse. In an instagram post, Denzel Curry reveals that he was also a product of child molestation. Throughout the song, he talks about her not being innocent from the age of 5 and that he offered her a shoulder to cry on. Overall, this is a great opener to the TA13OO album.

13LACK B13ALLOONS:

BLACK BALLOONS is track that features R&B artist Twelve'len and rapper GoldLink. In this track, he makes a lot of references to the 2017 horror movie "IT". An example of an reference is "Taboo and I are on the same boat, what's said from pennywise, i guess we float". He calls the girl from the previous track "taboo" and talks about how they are very similar. When I listened to the album the first time, I couldn't figure what the black balloon represented. I looked on genius, and they said that the black balloon represents "pain" and was shown in the clout cobain music video.

CAZH MAN1AC:

CAZH MAN1AC is a track about all the money that Denzel Curry has made in the past few years. It also slightly shows the suffering that comes with all this money. In this song, Denzel Curry makes a lot of pop culture references including B-Rabbit, Peter Grffin, and Aladdin.

ZUMO:

ZUMO is the last track of the light part of the album. The track is produced by Charlie Heat who have previously produced songs of the life of pablo . The first line of the track is him saying that his pockets are too big and comparing them to a sumo wrestler.

This song has one of the catchiest hooks in the album, and production might be at a all time high for Denzel Curry.

ACT 2:

ZUPER ZA1YAN ZUPERMAN:

ZUPER ZA1YAN ZUPERMAN is the first track of the gray act. In this song, Denzel Curry compares himself to the super saiyan from the popular show Dragon Ball Z, which is the unstoppable form that the main characters turn into. Denzel Curry is trying to say that hes's unstoppable in his rapping skill.

ZWITCH 1T UP:

In this track, he talks about mental health as the hook seems like its alluding to bipolar disorder. Also in this song for a small part, he talks about the new rap generation that does anything that will create hype. Overall in this track, he addresses all the mental health issues he's seen in his life.

MAD 1 GOT 1T

This song is the first song that starts to switch to the darker side of the album as this song feels more moody and has a more depressive tone compared to the other songs in the gray section of the album. In this track, he talks about how his popularity has ruined relationships with his friends because of their jealousy.

Z1RENZ:

This song features JID, the up and coming rapper from J.Cole's record label Dreamville. In this song Denzel Curry talks about politics in America. He goes into issues such as police brutality and gun violence. This song is one of personal favorites as I love JID's part and also denzel curry's chorus.

CLOUT COBA1N:

CLOUT COBA1N is probably the most popular song out of all the songs in the album because of its catchy hook and beat. In this song, he makes references to the late guitarist of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain who died from suicide. He talks about how some rapper's clout could be a downfall to them.

ACT 3:

THE 13LACKEST 13LALLOON

In the first track of act 3(dark), Denzel Curry talks about his family. In this song, he talks about his brother, who was tased to death by police. In chorus of this song, he talks about how his death felt like a "horror movie" because it didn't feel believable. He even sets up the next song percs, by talking about anti depressants and how they could cause school shootings. This song really feels moody compared to the previous song as it's the first track of the dark act.

PERCZ:

In this track, he talks about how he doesn't need percs unlike other rappers in this current generation. This song is mainly made to adress the new rappers and how they pop xans and make music videos with cole bennet to be big. This song sounds the most cold blooded out of all the songs in the album due to his anger fueled voice throughout the track.

VENGEANCE:

This track talks about violence thoughts towards his enemies and even talks about getting rid of the body by putting it into cement. In his chorus, he talks about wanting revenge and mainly talks about the things he wants to do to his "enemy".

13 M T

This track is also a very cold blooded track. The chorus is alludes to his song "ULT" from Imperial, his previous track. The song seems to take a style like the style from his most popular track "Ultimate". Overall this song is a very good outro with very strong bars and sick flow.

Conclusion/My Thoughts:

Overall, this project is very ambitious and honestly one of my favorite albums to listen to. In this album, he talks about every aspect of his life including family, money, friends, and also other rappers. I think the reason why this album was overlooked by many people is because Denzel Curry doesn't do anything that catches people's attention outside of his music

Here's some excerpts:

The six-episode Lifetime series tells the story of the R&B singer through the experiences of his accusers, including his ex-wife Andrea Kelly, who shared allegations of pedophilia and physical and sexual abuse perpetrated by the singer that span decades. "We have evidence of him raping underage girls, which is what sex with underage girls always is," hampton said of what's presented in the docuseries.

"There are whole systems in place: housing, runners, rules," hampton said. "There are women decades apart testifying to the kind of rules that they were subjected to living with this man, dealing with this man; there are hundreds, probably thousands of tapes made of them [by R. Kelly] without their permission. He's also deeply manipulative; these are women who didn't know each other, 20 years apart, and they'd be talking about being made to sign false confessions and he'd say, 'This is my insurance that you don't hurt me the way these other women have hurt me.' So, I knew we were dealing with someone that we may not want to dismiss. He's dangerous," hampton said.

But when hampton asked longtime collaborators and friends to speak on-camera for the docuseries, many of these highly influential people declined.

"John Legend was the only one," who participated, hampton said. "I asked Jay-Z, I asked Mary J. Blige, I asked Lil Kim, Erykah Badu, Dave Chappelle..." But they all said no. "I mean, most people just don't want to touch it. I remember Ahmir ["Questlove" Thompson] was like, 'I would do anything for you but I can't do this.' It's not because they support him, it's because it's so messy and muddy. It's that turning away that has allowed this to go on."

'Surviving R. Kelly' premieres on Lifetime on January 3.
