Introduction: Hello r/hiphopheads, I will be running the best hook thread once a week every Sunday! This will be run very similarly to the Best Verse Threads we had a while ago, as you can see the format is almost identical to the old threads. All you have to do is just post your favorite Gucci Mane hook with a link to the hook. And if you want to, you can quote the hook word for word in your comment. The comment with the most upvotes will be deemed that artists best hook! And at the end of the year we will decide the best hook of the ones we collected! This is my first time doing anything like this so any recommendations to formatting, anything else helpful would be great!

Every Wednesday we will discuss an album from our Essential Albums list

Last Time: E.S.G. - Sailin Da South

This Week: Tha Dogg Pound - Dogg Food

Background/Description (courtesy of iTunes)

In 1995, Death Row Records was on a crazy roll. The back-to-back releases of The Chronic and Doggystyle had transformed America's youth into an army of blunt smoking, gin-and-juice sipping G funk fanatics, and the intoxicating sounds of Dr. Dre's keyboard grooves wafted out of cars from Long Beach to Maine. After co-starring on both of those albums, Tha Dogg Pound — Daz and Kurupt — were more than ready to go for theirs, and had already developed the fanbase needed for instant success. Though not as huge as its predecessors, Dogg Food still debuted at #1, and went multi-platinum, thanks to the Snoop-assisted single and West Coast/East Coast beef instigator "New York, New York" as well as the ultra-smooth bedroom jam "Let's Play House" featuring Michel'le and Nate Dogg. Produced entirely by Daz, the music here is just what you would expect/hope for, a collection of watery synths, ferociously funky bass, and snapping beats, perfectly suiting the tag-team rhymes — a non-stop exercise in Cali gangsta-ism, overflowing with casually violent threats, XXX-rated sex rhymes, and Crip pride.

Guidelines

This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is your chance to practice being a critic. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!!

How has this album affected hip-hop? WHY do you like this tape? What are the best tracks? Do you think it deserves the praise it gets? Is it the first time you've listened to it? What's your first impression? Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't.

DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BEING LATE!!!! Discussion throughout the week is encouraged.

Also my bad for delaying this so long, school has kicked my ass and I just had to deal with that first

Recommended If You Like Thread - May 12, 2018

Posted: 12 May 2018 11:05 AM PDT

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

An introduction to UK Drill

Posted: 12 May 2018 01:18 PM PDT

Since I know there's a lot of fans of drill here I wanted to give you lot an introduction to UK drill, also known as Brixton Drill (where it originated), it's currently a really popping scene in London. Firstly I'd like to give some context about what it is and what separates it from Chicago drill, grime etc. In the middle to late 00s a genre known as a subgenre of UK hip hop called Road Rap started forming, much as a backlash against perceived commercialisation of grime, with MCs like Wiley and Dizzee Rascal making songs like Wearing My Rolex and Dance Wiv Me, it was understandable a new sound was needed to represent the streets. Artists like Giggs, Nines, Krept and Konan, Sneakbo and more were making their own style of gangster rap, which is what became known as road rap, two classic examples of this genre being Giggs - Talkin Da Hardest and Krept - 182 Bar Massacre.

UK drill as a subgenre started developing around 2013-2014, with many people then starting to take influence from both the huge drill wave in Chicago, as well as from road rap. Perhaps the biggest difference with drill from London compared to Chicago is the almost complete absence of autotune and more melodic vocals in it, and the production and rapping still draws influence from other UK genres like garage and grime, so it is often at a higher BPM and a different style of MCing.

Without straying too far from music discussion, it is worth to note that over the recent years knife crime is on a large rise around England and that includes London. UK Drill has been fairly controversial, with some politicians and parts of the media suggesting it's a cause of the crime wave, but others arguing that it's a reflection of the reality a lot of young people find themselves in. Either way, plenty of artists active in the scene keep getting locked up for stabbings, weapon possession, drug possession etc, and some fans and artists try to keep a 'scoreboard' of who has stabbed who, with plenty of notorious beefs in the genre such as 67 vs 150.

It has gotten some recent attention, with 67's song Let's Lurk and Section Boys Lock Arf both becoming large hits in the UK and even some attention in the US. On top of that, Michael Dapaah aka Big Shaq's parody of UK Drill (on the same beat as Let's Lurk) went very very viral. For those unfamiliar with UK slang there might be a few words and phrases that won't make much sense, but the lyrical topics in UK drill are often pretty similar with a focus on knife crime and trapping. Here's a link to a not-so-perfect but still useful dictionary of London slang though if you're interested. If not, just know that a skeng is a knife (unless used in the context of being a gun… in which case it's a gun) and a leng is a gun.

I'm going to list a handful of the UK drill rappers and groups, and some of their essential songs, and I would say that it's more of a single-driven genre even if a lot of the crews put out mixtapes, so songs are the way to go:

67

Definitely the most popular UK drill act at this point, and they've been around since early in the wave as well, with the song Live Corn being many peoples first introduction to the genre. They primarily consist of 5 rappers, ASAP, LD, Dimzy, Monkey, SJ and Liquez, but they're part of a larger collective including in-house producers, designers etc. 67 has a lot of things going for it, including a very strong team of producers, and LD's voice lending itself to some very hard hooks.

Essential songs:

Live Corn, Let's Lurk, Take It There, Skeng Man

K-Trap

Remember how it's rumored Ghostface Killah used to wear a mask when doing shows because he was on the run from the law? K-Trap has managed to keep his identity unknown. As an MC he's got a very commanding sound on the mic with a lot of unique flows, one of the hardest acts in the scene.

Essential songs:

Anything Else, Watching, Trap Line Bling ft. Young Teflons & Mischief

Reekz MB

A rapper from Stockwell with a connection to 67. One of my favourite acts, much like K-Trap he's one of the more captivating MCs in the genre, and his mixtape Right & Wrong from 2016 is one of the best tapes so far.

Essential songs:

Blueprint, No Face ft. LD, Blockaa

Harlem Spartans

This group has been steadily getting more popular the last few years. Another group with some pretty unique flows and generally great production. Loski especially has a popping solo career at this point and has contributed a lot to HS's popularity.

Essential songs:

Hazards, Call Me a Spartan

150

A collective where the rappers generally post their songs under their individual names but all still represent 150. Also known for beefing with 67 and related acts. Stickz especially is great, also one of the earlier artists to make music in this genre.

Essential songs:

150 Degrees, Hella Kwengins

410

Connected to 150. Has been blowing up recently too. Just like 150 the members of this collective generally post songs under individual names but still represent the collective strongly. Skengdo, a member of 410, has easily become one of the most interesting artists in the scene to me, and his duo-work with AM is dope.

Essential songs:

Crash, Think Again, Kick Down Doors.

Other artists in the genre worth checking out to start: Zone 2, Harlem Spartans, B Side, 2Bunny, SMG, Headie One, RV, Fredo,

As I was finishing up this write-up I came across a very comprehensive list of artists on r/ukdrill that has a pretty big list so it felt redundant to re-list all of them, but here's more UK drill rappers and crews so if you want more check that out for sure.

Also if you want more of the genre general, check out r/ukdrill.

UK Drill artists mostly rely on other youtube channels/platforms to upload and share their music. Some of these bigger channels are Link up TV, GRM Daily, SB.TV, Mixtape Madness and Pressplay Media.

Curious to know peoples thoughts on this subgenre and its sounds. It's a very active and interesting scene to follow if you become a fan.

New Travis Scott song being played at Rolling Loud

Posted: 12 May 2018 09:09 PM PDT

https://twitter.com/YamzInTheTrap/status/995510259182657536

It ended but here's a clip. Sounds cool and sorta like rerun, nothing like the lows on birds so far and Astro is looking to have a couple hits. I still expect there to be deeper/more well produced shit but not in the consistency as rodeo, cause he probably needs to elevate his career with an album that has good pop appeal that isn't hated by fans.

Considering this is the sound that the hits on the album might be going for, it doesn't seem like a stretch to say that Rerun(ft Quavo) might be on this album since it got scrapped on HJJH.

Hip-Hop Listening Club of the Week #250: Maxo Kream - The Persona Tape - HipHop

Hip-Hop Listening Club of the Week #250: Maxo Kream - The Persona Tape - HipHop

Hip-Hop Listening Club of the Week #250: Maxo Kream - The Persona Tape

Posted: 11 May 2018 06:22 AM PDT

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

Today we'll be listening to The Persona Tape by Maxo Kream

This album was selected by /u/yung_hokage_stef

Background provided by /u/yung_hokage_stef

Within the past few years, trap music has become synonymous with shallow cliché lyrics, overused flows, a general lack of rapping ability, and dime a dozen beats riddled with 808's and hi-hats. On top of this, trap as a whole is viewed as inferior compared to the rest of hip-hop, a brand of music equivalent to a fast-food meal that can never truly reach the heights that the genre's other sounds have to offer. Now, we all know that isn't actually true, but in my opinion no other rappers dispels this myth as well as Maxo Kream. Within a short span of 6 years, Maxo has delivered several examples of how a trap project can stand on its own as a great piece of music given the right ingredients. Pairing his unique and versatile flows with grimey hard-hitting lyrics and a surprising knack for storytelling, plus an array of unconventional beats that stray from the usual sound trap is associated with, he has also established himself as one of hip-hop's most talented and interesting newcomers. The Persona Tape is the follow-up to Maxo's 2015 mixtape Maxo187, largely considered to be his magnum opus, and while the argument that it's his best is easily made, I believe this project is just as good.

From the opening track, "Choppas", The Persona Tape's gritty tone is set almost immediately with filtered drums that sound like something out of a Call of Duty trailer. With the bars

Still see the same niggas that I shot

Still see a couple plugs that I robbed (Scary nigga)

Have a nigga see my face get shot

The other half see my face and start to run

you get a good understanding of who Maxo is as a person, a hardened Crip member who is willing to deal with both the highs and the lows of the trap lifestyle as long as it gets him paid. This song is both an excellent introduction to Maxo's style as well as the tape itself, especially because it is very cinematic. This is a testament to Maxo's commitment to making a project that actually feels like a project, with a beginning, end, and proper pacing, another one of The Persona Tape's strengths.

From then on you're supplied with several tracks consisting of both excellent rapping and production. Maxo tackles every instrumental here with ease, maintaining sharp catchy flows that he can switch on the drop of a dime (a great example of this is in "Karo"). He has the ability to sound comfortable on any beat thrown at him, whilst also managing to craft some impressive narratives with his aforementioned story telling. This is put on its best display with the track "Hit Mane", a personal highlight where Maxo describes his daily routine working as a hitman for hire. He keeps you invested until the twist ending comes to a close and creates some striking imagery along the way with lines like

Pro drilling like a killing, don't negotiate my prices

Blood spilling like Al-Qaeda, walking crisis, one man ISIS

The last thing I'll note about this tape is how diverse its production is. Each beat on this tape has a sound that makes it stand out within the trap soundscape but also maintains what makes trap beats so alluring in the first place. They take inspiration from all types of hip-hop to give the project a very flavourful feel. "Karo" consists of a funky bassline peppered with Memphis-esque drums, whereas "Big Worm" samples Wiley's grime classic "The Morgue" to the tune of the hardest snare drums I've heard in a minute, and "G3" sounds like something out of a JRPG.

In conclusion, this mixtape is a breath of fresh air in a subgenre that many view to be stagnating. It is both an attempt at pushing the trap sound further while also harkening back to its early days (the ode to H-Town with Paul Wall on "Smash" is a nice throwback) resulting in one of the best projects of 2016. Even though many trap artists may find their footing by way of a hit single, The Persona Tape shows that putting in the time and effort to create something special really pays off.

UPDATE [12:42 EST] I reached out to Taylor (Ameer's ex), and she had this to say about the situation: https://imgur.com/a/5qlECxK

NOTE: As the old saying goes, "innocent until proven guilty." No concrete proof has been released yet, but I do think this is worth keeping an eye on. If any additional information arises, I'll be sure to add it.

Kevin Gates thanks Meek Mill for speaking about his situation, explains frustration with parole

Posted: 11 May 2018 11:27 AM PDT

Kevin Gates took to Instagram to thank Meek Mill for mentioning his recent parole struggles on The Breakfast Club

Gates then goes on to explain what got him locked up, explains that he's innocent but didn't want to snitch, and that he's not upset with the charges but is upset that his parole has been "punitive" rather than rehabilitative in nature

Gates really sounds committed to making steps forward and it was really nice to hear from him
