Recommended If You Like Thread - April 21, 2018

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

My Experience at an Empty Stalley Concert

Posted: 21 Apr 2018 07:40 AM PDT

Alright ma dudes. Last night Stalley was in town for the Little 500 (the self-proclaimed biggest party weekend in college) playing a show at a theater downtown. I should first point out that this is a traditional theater that normally hosts plays, orchestral performances, and the likes. I found out about this concert by drunkenly stumbling across it stapled to a telephone pole one night. I haven't been as big of a fan of his recent stuff to be honest, but Stalley was one of my favorite artists from about 2011-2014. I mean, this dude made Lincoln Way Nights. I had to see him.

Red flags: -There were 4 opening artists listed on the ticket for a show that started at 9 PM. -Tickets were $30, $25 student, and $20 pre-sale. I bought a $20 pre-sale ticket the day before. -I checked the Facebook event the day before and only 3 other people were "going". All members of the promotion/management team.

I wasn't crazy about getting there early or being way up close to the front, so we leave at 9:45, get there around 10. It's 4/20 and I'm baked out of my mind and navigation is hard but we get there and something feels off, definitely not the atmosphere of you'd expect coming from a rap concert but that's just because it's a historic theater, right? We finally find the entrance to the stage seating after getting confused looks from the staff. We walk into a crowd of maybe 10. Not wanting this intimate of a concert experience, we walk to the back row and take our seats. Two dudes are rapping on stage, look to be in their mid-30s. They weren't terrible to their credit, but definitely nothing to remember. The awkwardness of seeing them rap to an empty, uninterested theater and wondering their life stories was painful.

They wrap up, and three guys from the crowd walk up to the stage. They must've gotten the VIP package where you get to meet the opening acts. They pace back and forth across stage while the next artist sets up. Wait, why is that frat star looking dude holding the mic and saying "CHYEAH" into it like he's about to start rapping. I was too high to notice the point where the intermission music stopped and the next performance started, but yep, sure enough those three guys who had just been sitting in the 5th row were the next opening act. Better yet, three of the girls in the crowd appear to know this guy and are here to see him. I should also note, when we got our tickets, the girls at the front desk grabbed them from a basket and there was only one ticket left in there after us. No one else was coming. One couple that had been there earlier had bailed by now. I think we were down to 8 people. The only other person there besides us who didn't seem to have a connection to the promotion group or a performing artist was an international student who was there by herself.

Next some nerdy art school kids started bringing out some big equipment. Okay we've got two video displays, an actual DJ set up, and the speakers are no longer the cheapest PAs available at your local Music Center. Maybe we're getting an elaborate production here. Oh wait, no one else is coming. Next opener was Sidmfkid. This was much better. He actually feels like a real performer and I feel much more comfortable by the fact that he looks young and optimisitc, seeing this as a necessary hurdle before reaching bigger things instead of the beaten down look that the other artists had making you question how long they had been doing this. He even jokes about it. "Wow huge crowd tonight...you guys are making me nervous". He was honestly decent, too. His song, "Pull Up" is actually a jam that I'll save. He had what I think was his girl there and it was sort of like he was performing to her so that was kind of cute, but she also kind of had that "when are you gonna stop doing this and get a real job" look on her face.

Is Stalley even going to come out at this point? This whole thing has been giving me anxiety. I forgot to mention the time when one of the members of the second opening group brought the mic down in the crowd and started rapping to people as they sat there awkwardly watching. We've been debating leaving the whole time. When Sidmfkid wraps up I call it. We're leaving. I can't watch one of my childhood heroes perform in an empty theater. We leave and as we're walking out Sidmfkid and his girl are also walking out and there's a guy outside who I'm assuming was part of the promotion team who says, "Look I'm so sorry man" and Sid replies with something about how they were charging $20 at the door and he wasn't even getting paid for this so it didn't surprise him. I really wanted to stop and just eavesdrop the whole conversation but alas, we continued our walk home.

Stalley's popularity is declining but it's not that bad. He was signed to MMG a few years ago and he has 300,000+ monthly listeners on Spotify. I've seen guys with 1/3rd of that pull a couple hundred people to a concert. The promoters fucked up heavy and in hindsight yeah were probably charging at least twice what they should've. Not to mention there's so many other events going on this weekend.

Part of me wishes I had stayed. Much like I wanted to hear all the dirty details in the conversation, I was dying to know how the rest of the concert played out. I can't imagine that he would even come out. A personal concert would've been cool but I also couldn't fucking take that awkwardness. What if they apologized and came up and offered a refund? It was one of the most awkward experiences of my life and of course since I was high I was hyper-aware of everything and coming up with theories and stories for everything. I tried finding proof of a performance from Instagram detective work but couldn't find anything. Sure, it was a disappointment, but it was also the most twistedly interesting concert experience of my life.

Hip-Hop Listening Club Album of the Week #247: Benny - Butcher On Steroids

Posted: 20 Apr 2018 06:26 AM PDT

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

Today we'll be listening to Butcher On Steroids by Benny

Background:

As I got my copy of the Butcher On Steroids record in this week, I thought it'd be nice to discuss this album in the listening club. I don't have time to write a lot, so I just lifted something from hnhh:

Every time Griselda Records comes through with a new release, you know you're going to be getting two things in spades. Unapologetic, street lyricism, and gritty, raw production permeate each release from the Buffalo collective, from Conway's recent Reject On Steroids to Westside Gunn's Hitler Wears Hermes series, to Benny's brand new mixtape Butcher On Steroids. Boasting production from Daringer, Green Lantern, and more, Butcher On Steroids makes it clear from the jump that Benny will be continuing to deliver that hardcore Griselda shit. If you aren't into the Griselda sound, you'll probably be better off avoiding Butcher On Steroids. But if you're buying what Westside Gunn, Conway, and Benny have been selling, this project will make an enjoyable listen from front to back, especially if you're in the market for authentic street rap.

While the aesthetic surrounding Benny might be a bit less interesting than that of Westside Gunn or Conway, he is slowly becoming my favourite out of the collective when it comes to straight rapping. This project is a great listen, with some very vivid street bars on some nice 'Griselda' beats, as well as a few classic beats.

  • Album: Butcher On Steroids
  • Label: Griselda Records
  • Producers: Daringer, DJ Green Lantern, Camouflage Monk & more
  • Notable Features Conway & El Camino

EDIT:

not to sound condescending but i'm just gonna add a couple of discussion questions here incase y'all get tired of 'father stretch my anus' jokes and lyric chains:

What direction do you think this album is these albums are going to take? What direction would you like to see them take? Do you think the length of the album is good or bad? What influences are we supposed to see on the album? Do you think he's gonna release it in time?

We know he's let Charlamagne hear some of it, and I believe Nas reportedly was working on something with Kanye too, what do you think it is?

edit 2:

why didn't kanye tweet the name of his own album? I'm assuming the second one is Kids See Ghost - Kids See Ghost

Why is ghost singular? do you expect both the drop? which one do you think will sell more?

What Denzel Curry Referred To In His Tweet About Kanye's ''Yeezus'' Being A Stolen Idea

Posted: 19 Apr 2018 06:24 PM PDT

For some context
Kanye West recently returned to twitter and has there's been no lack of activity. He's just 'broke the internet' by announcing the release date of: his new album, a collaboration project with Kid Cudi, Pusha T's new album and Teyana Taylor's. He has also been writing a self-help book in real-time by tweeting, and amongst those thoughts he touched the subject of being original, ''stealing'' ideas, and making them your own:

''I find myself getting stuck in the idea of originality and letting my ego push me to say things like "this person stole this from me" and the funny thing is it'll be a reference I took from somewhere 😂'' (18.04.2018)
let's be less concerned with ownership of ideas. It is important that ideas see the light of day even if you don't get the credit for them. Let's be less concerned with credit awards and external validation. (18.04.2018)

Denzel Curry's tweet
In the aftermath of Kanye's controversial thoughts, Denzel Curry tweeted out this:

So basically Kanye just admitted to stealing @_sydneyintheory and @UnkleLuc Wild Ep idea for yeezus (20.04.18)

And considering the tweet was met with some questions regarding what he was referring to, why not just shed some light on the situation. Credit to u/soccerperson's post on this from 2015.

UnkleLuc, Sydney In Theory and The Wild EP

UnkleLuc is much known for his direction/editing on videos like Future's ''Trap Niggas'', A$AP Mob's ''Yamborghini High'' and Kodak Black's ''SKRT''. Together with the artist Personal, as Sydney In Theory they made ''The Wild EP''. It's a dark and experimental EP that features names like SpaceGhostPurrp, Robb Bank$, Sylvan Lacue (As QuESt), and Denzel Curry.

What makes Kanye related to this? Well in 2011, UnkleLuc lost his brother and on the same night he got the news, he sent an e-mails to Kanye and his team with some of the art he had made and a demo of The Wild ''because he'd lost his brother and felt he could sympathize with Kanye's situation with his mom and just wanted to get feedback from his music''.

So aside from the potential sonic influence with Yeezus having a similar industrial and raw sound, what supports Kanye actually looked at his work, can be seen from some visuals:

UnkleLuc images

  • Dog - 1 - 2 - 3
  • Elephant - 1

Kanye West images

  • Dog - 1 - 2 - 3
  • Elephant (from No Church In Wild) - 1

Considering Kanye acknowledged their work in the e-mails, is it possible that Kanye stole their ideas - visuals and music - like Denzel Curry pointed out in his tweet? Again credit to u/soccerperson as I've quoted parts of his post and it's how I was made aware of it to begin with.

TLDR: Kanye makes controversial tweets about originality, Denzel Curry tweets that Kanye got his Yeezus idea from artist who e-mailed him art and music in 2011/2012.
