Hip-Hop Listening Club Album of the Week #244: French Montana - Mac & Cheese 4: The Appetizer

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

Today we'll be listening to Mac & Cheese 4: The Appetizer by French Montana

Background

French Montana. Harry Fraud. Put these two together and you've got a very wavy combination. On Mac & Cheese 4: The Appetizer, French Montana and Harry Fraud take you on a half hour journey filled with classic French bars over very atmospheric, samples-filled-with-reverb beats.

French Montana is often criticized for not being able to make a great track without features, but to me this project proves otherwise. Counting 0 features (except for the Max B appearance on the first track), French holds his own very well. The bars might not be the most intricate or innovating, but French is not the guy to expect this from in the first place. Harry Fraud's production on this project is great (like always), with nice sample choices and not-too-complicated beats. A review describes how "his beats complement French's meandering vocal style, like a bed of drugs for an addict.".

On the first track we hear Max B speak from prison and hear French spit some bars over this sample. After that, track 2, Poison, features a beat that samples Lana Del Rey, which nicely sets the tone for the project. Track 3 is another wavy beat, but track 4 features a more 'classic' French Montana sound. Track 5 and 6 are a bit less memorable for me, but the project closes on a fantastic Playing In The Wind II, the 2nd edition of the 2009 classic song.

While it can be hard to find a coherent theme in French Montana projects, I feel like this project has a bit of a love-theme. There's quite some bars/hooks about girls, but because of combinations of lines like

Baby, forever be my lady

Twisted off the Yac and the purp, Montana been waitin'

If I ever came in your mouth without tellin' yah, my fault

it can be a little hard to find the real meaning of the songs sometimes.

All in all, I think this project is a great entry in French Montana's (and Harry Fraud's) discography. If you like the beats, you'll like the project, because the bars just flow along with the beats. If you don't like the beats then, well, youweird.

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

hiphopheads Essential Album of the Week #98: Gangsta Pat - Deadly Verses

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 04:57 PM PDT

Welcome to the new and improved Essential Album of the Week discussion thread!

Every Wednesday we will discuss an album from our Essential Albums list

Last Time: Three 6 Mafia - Mystic Stylez

This Week: Gangsta Pat - Deadly Verses

Background/Description (courtesy of Wikipedia)

Deadly Verses is the 1995 album by Memphis gangsta rapper, Gangsta Pat. In this album, Pat's style has dramatically changed into a quick pace, hardcore flow (getting the impression for the new pace from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony & hardcore lyrics from Three 6 Mafia). But, like most of Pat's albums, he couldn't translate the support into national sales. Pat, would again, move on to another label after the release of his next album.

Guidelines

This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is your chance to practice being a critic. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!!

How has this album affected hip-hop? WHY do you like this tape? What are the best tracks? Do you think it deserves the praise it gets? Is it the first time you've listened to it? What's your first impression? Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't.

DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BEING LATE!!!! Discussion throughout the week is encouraged.

Next week's EAOTW will be The Luniz - Operation Stackola
