Background/Description (courtesy of allmusic.com)

One of the cornerstones of the New York hardcore movement, The Infamous is Mobb Deep's masterpiece, a relentlessly bleak song cycle that's been hailed by hardcore rap fans as one of the most realistic gangsta albums ever recorded. Given Mobb Deep's youthful age and art-school background, it's highly unlikely that The Infamous is drawn strictly from real-life experience, yet it's utterly convincing, because it has all the foreboding atmosphere and thematic sweep of an epic crime drama. That's partly because of the cinematic vision behind the duo's detailed narratives, but it's also a tribute to how well the raw, grimy production evokes the world that Mobb Deep is depicting. The group produced the vast majority of the album itself, with help on a few tracks from the Abstract (better known as Q-Tip), and establishes a spare, throbbing, no-frills style indebted to the Wu-Tang Clan. This is hard, underground hip-hop that demands to be met on its own terms, with few melodic hooks to draw the listener in. Similarly, there's little pleasure or relief offered in the picture of the streets Mobb Deep paints here: They inhabit a war zone where crime and paranoia hang constantly in the air. Gangs are bound together by a code of fierce loyalty, relying wholly on one another for survival in a hopeless environment. Hostile forces -- cops, rivals, neighborhood snitches -- are potentially everywhere, and one slip around the wrong person can mean prison or death. There's hardly any mention of women, and the violence is grim, serious business, never hedonistic. Pretty much everything on the album contributes to this picture, but standouts among the consistency include "Survival of the Fittest," "Eye for a Eye," "Temperature's Rising," "Cradle to the Grave," and the classic "Shook Ones, Pt. 2." The product of an uncommon artistic vision, The Infamous stands as an all-time gangsta/hardcore classic.

Guidelines

This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is your chance to practice being a critic. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!!

How has this album affected hip-hop? WHY do you like this tape? What are the best tracks? Do you think it deserves the praise it gets? Is it the first time you've listened to it? What's your first impression? Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't.

DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BEING LATE!!!! Discussion throughout the week is encouraged.

Next week's EAOTW will be Naughty by Nature - Poverty's Paradise

[ANNOUNCEMENT] T.F AMA tomorrow at 2pm PST

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 02:16 PM PST

One year after the release of his first EP "No Hooks", T.F has dropped his debut album "ErThangSkanless." Clocking in at 12 tracks, ErThangSkanless paints a vivid backstory of T.F's coming of age, with a warmer and less aggressive sound than his previous effort. All based on true stories and life experiences, T.F talks about overdoses, robberies, losing close friends, and his love for his mother. Expect a 360 music video for his project single "Residential" which is produced by Nato, an LA-based producer that has put together records for Y.G, Chris Brown, and many more major artists. True to its title, T.F gives us a perspective of L.A that is clear, crafty, and "skanless".

Hip-Hop Listening Club Album of the Week #241: MIKE - WINTER NEW YORK

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 06:37 AM PST

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

This week we'll be listening to WINTER NEW YORK by MIKE.

Background

provided by /u/mikeest

Over the past few years, hip hop has been marked by the resurgence of a 'lo-fi' sound, often accompanied by rappers whose understated deliveries deal with topics such as depression and mental health. If you go prowling through the dark recesses of Bandcamp and especially Soundcloud you're bound to encounter an abundance of poorly formed bedroom whine sessions with Anime covers and titles 'l i k e t h i s'. As such it could be easy to dismiss MIKE from a distance. A teenager with an unnecessarily captialised rap name talking about his personal problems into a muddy mix.

But after a short while it becomes very apparent that MIKE belongs in his own category. With a voice eerily reminiscent of Mick Jenkins and a flow that pierces through the washed out soul samples he uses, MIKE practically spits out his words, there's an emphatic quality that few rappers possess. In the hands of a lesser rapper a lot his music could be called sleepy, but here the relaxed atmosphere is marked by an occasional sense of urgency.

As the title suggests New York is a prominent part of MIKE's music, but he's able to portray the most over represented city in hip hop in his own unique terms. This isn't the hellish landscape of Cannibal Ox or Mobb Deep, and it's not some hipster paradise either. MIKE exists perfectly in the middle between these 2 worlds. This is everyman rap, he's a product of the city, he's witness to the same New York grit we hear so much about in hip hop, but he lives more in his own head than in any simple image of New York.

MIKE himself describes the album as follows:

WINTER NEW YORK is a project which auras around the past couple years of my life. Its based on how the more physical things I became connected with, the less connection I had within myself and lost that voice in my head.

This loose, dreamy quality is present throughout, it really feels as if we're in the head of a young guy floating aimlessly between phases of his life, nostalgic for a time that he can't quite recall. That idea describes a lot of what MIKE represents. He's still very young, he still has his flaws, but he doesn't shy away from any of this and there's a subtle wisdom that hovers around his work. This isn't MIKE's first work, and it's not his best either, but this project is the point where he started evolving into one of the most unique, skilled, and genuinely insightful rappers of the last few years.

Disclaimer: If you like this, or if you want to like MIKE, I recommend giving a chance to May God Bless Your Hustle, Longest Day Shortest Night, or By the Water. Even if you aren't overly impressed by this, I urge you not to give up on MIKE yet.

Monthly 'What's Hot' playlist // MARCH 2018

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 09:22 AM PST

What's good HHH, your beloved mod team here.

As promised in the January announcements thread, at the start of each month, we'll have a thread to update a playlist of what's hot. The songs in this playlist (50 songs) will be chosen by you guys. A thread will be posted every month (this is the first one), where you can leave a comment with the song you think should be in the playlist. The songs must have been released in the last two months preferably, but exceptions are possible. The 50 comments with the highest amount of votes will be made into a playlist that will be posted and put in the sidebar. After every months vote the playlist will be updated.

RULES:

  • ONE SONG PER COMMENT

  • Songs must have been released in the last 2 months (exceptions are possible if an older song suddenly blows up, or if a song stays popular for a long time)

Here are last months New Music Fridays to give an overview of all the music that dropped the past 2 months (the songs don't have to be in these threads though):

February 23rd, February 17th, February 9th, February 2nd & January 19th

Please report any comments you see that contain a song that has already been posted, so that we can delete those comments.

We are currently planning on putting a playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. If anyone wants to make one on another platform and update it every month, feel free and make sure to contact us with the link.

We are looking into more specific, themed playlists and how to go about creating those, so any input or ideas you guys have on that is always welcome.
