Hip-Hop Listening Club Album of the Week #234: Tech N9ne - Welcome to Strangeland

Posted: 03 May 2017 05:16 PM PDT

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

This week we'll be listening to Welcome to Strangeland by Tech N9ne.

Background

Here's what this week's selector had to say about the album:

Welcome to Strangeland is the 12th album and 4th "Collabos" project by the underground MC Aaron Yates aka Tech N9ne. It was released November 8th, 2011 on Yates' 40th birthday and 5 months after his All 6's & 7's project, which was a hard album to follow, competing with features from Kendrick Lamar, Twista, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, and Lil Wayne. Tech took a different approach though on his newest Collabos album, mainly featuring Strange Music artists, and creating an atmosphere on the album that was meant to cater to his Strange Music fanbase.

The album is written in the form of a story about Tech N9ne's discovery of Strangeland and the journey to him becoming the leader of this new land. This isn't the first time Tech has mentioned his idea of a land in which he rules and runs on the basis of love and peace. Two tracks that this idea is heavily mentioned are "K.O.D." from his 2009 project K.O.D. and "Strangeland" from the previously mentioned All 6's & 7's. The project features various ups and downs through the tone of music, ranging from more partyish vibes, to darker sounds and more emotional, personal tracks. The topics range from addiction, suicide, and many others that Tech and his guests address with respect.

Welcome to Strangeland is a staple on Tech N9ne's career, showcasing for the first time his growing label Strange Music. This was the point when it went from being a small label out of Kansas City to one of the most dominant independent labels in the game. The album features current Strange Artists Krizz Kaliko, Brotha Lynch Hung, Prozak, Ces Cru, ¡Mayday!, & Stevie Stone; previous Strange artists such as Kutt Calhoun, Jay Rock, & Young Bleed; and production from Michael "Seven" Summers, Plex Luthor, and Jomeezius the Genius.

I interviewed Mannie Fresh and he shares the history of Cash Money and so much more

Posted: 03 May 2017 12:32 PM PDT

When I was 13 years old, I got Lil Wayne's debut album "Tha Block Is Hot" as a birthday gift. Shortly after, The Hot Boys and Cash Money records were my obsession as a young teen. So you can imagine, when I interviewed Mannie Fresh, the main producer behind all the smash hits, it was a dream come true.

Mannie Fresh gave me the breakdown and history of Cash Money records, how he met Juvenile at a bus stop, how he knew Lil Wayne was a genius when he was only 12 years old and soooo much more. He also talks about the conflict that he had with Baby and how he is working to bring Lil Wayne and Baby back together.

There is so much history and reflection in this podcast I hope you take it in. Let me know what you think.

https://www.thecomeupshow.com/2017/05/03/mannie-fresh-producer-beat-maker-two-different-things/

https://soundcloud.com/thecomeupshow/mannie-fresh

  1. Mannie met Juvenile at a bus stop outside Cash Money Office. Juvie was on the way to work and Mannie asked him to freestyle on the spot

  2. Cash Money had a bunch of "bounce" artists signed way before Hot Boys came along.

  3. The Cash Money x Universal deal was based on the sales of Big Tymers sound scan numbers. This is way before @umusic knew about Hot Boys.

  4. Mannie Fresh didn't think Hip Hop would become all flash because of Cash Money. They just felt they were being true to themselves.

  5. Mannie Fresh came up with "Bling Bling" half asleep at 3am. He knew he had to wake up and make the song or he would forget it forever.

Background/Description (courtesy of allmusic.com)

Recorded following his near-fatal shooting in New York, and released while he was in prison, Me Against the World is the point where 2Pac really became a legendary figure. Having stared death in the face and survived, he was a changed man on record, displaying a new confessional bent and a consistent emotional depth. By and large, this isn't the sort of material that made him a gangsta icon; this is 2Pac the soul-baring artist, the foundation of the immense respect he commanded in the hip-hop community. It's his most thematically consistent, least-self-contradicting work, full of genuine reflection about how he's gotten where he is -- and dread of the consequences. Even the more combative tracks ("Me Against the World," "Fuck the World") acknowledge the high-risk life he's living, and pause to wonder how things ever went this far. He battles occasional self-loathing, is haunted by the friends he's already lost to violence, and can't escape the desperate paranoia that his own death isn't far in the future. These tracks -- most notably "So Many Tears," "Lord Knows," and "Death Around the Corner" -- are all the more powerful in hindsight with the chilling knowledge that he was right. Even romance takes on a new meaning as an escape from the hellish pressure of everyday life ("Temptations," "Can U Get Away"), and when that's not available, getting high or drunk is almost a necessity. He longs for the innocence of childhood ("Young Niggaz," "Old School"), and remembers how quickly it disappeared, yet he still pays loving, clear-eyed tribute to his drug-addicted mother on the touching "Dear Mama." Overall, Me Against the World paints a bleak, nihilistic picture, but there's such an honest, self-revealing quality to it that it can't help conveying a certain hope simply through its humanity. It's the best place to go to understand why 2Pac is so revered; it may not be his definitive album, but it just might be his best.
