The AMA Adventures of Grandmaster Flash 2017 Posted: 16 Mar 2017 09:44 AM PDT Hey, everyone, I'm very excited to be doing my first AMA on Reddit, speaking directly to the people who care about hip hop and especially the history of hip hop. As you probably know, before there were the rappers, there was the DJ. Instead of holding a record by its edges like most DJs, I did something different; I manipulated the music by placing my fingertips on the vinyl. This gave me absolute control over the drum solo of the song, which I considered the best part. Controlling the vinyl with my fingertips was the birth of what today we know as turntablism. Extending the drum solo of the song from seconds to minutes allowed the MC to speak over a clear bed of music. This was the early beginning of what today we know as rap. Besides all of the recording and producing I've done and continue to do, I have never stopped playing live in front of great audiences all over the world, including tonight at Twitch X Reddit House at SXSW. And I've done other things, too. Did you know that I was one of the original DJs on Sirius? Or that I served as musical director and DJ for The Chris Rock Show on HBO? For the original Netflix series The Get Down, Baz Luhrmann asked me to be his associate producer to ensure that the show was true to the late '70s. Baz even wrote in a young version of me as a recurring character! Very excited that the second half of The Get Down's first season will be released on Netflix next month. So let the questions begin and Ask Me Anything! www.facebook.com/grandmasterflashofficial/ twitter.com/djflash4eva Proof: https://twitter.com/DJFlash4eva/status/841778969716367362 EDIT Alright r/hiphopheads, I gotta run back to the hotel to get ready for tonight's set at the Reddit SXSW house - Ashley may get me back on here to answer a few more questions before my performance…so keep an eye out! Thank you stopping by my AMA…talk to you soon! [link] [comments] |

Searching for a track for 15 years, please help Posted: 16 Mar 2017 02:41 PM PDT Hi, i recorded a song on a hip hop radio 15 years ago, i lost the tape in between and this song still haunting me to this day. It was kind of jazz rap (very smooth) with at least 2 male mc's and a female singing the hook (seemed like the group 'the spooks' but that's not them). I don't remember any of the lyrics but a chorus finishing with what seemed like (for a non-english speaker) "jah is the source, jah is the source (jah, jah, jah echoes), and there was a trumpet outro... I searched for so long... If that speaks to anybody, please, let me know ! I'm dying to hear that again. [link] [comments] |

NME used Stormzy in a cover about depression without his consent. Posted: 16 Mar 2017 12:33 PM PDT https://mobile.twitter.com/Stormzy1/status/842363327019917312 You lot know I don't rant or open my mouth up for no reason but serious @NME magazine are the biggest bunch of sly, foul PAIGONS. https://twitter.com/Stormzy1/status/842366646287241218 I KNOW it will help others but just imagine a personal battle of yours being published on the front of a magazine without your permission https://twitter.com/Stormzy1/status/842367306156109824 And for those saying @NME done this with no bad intent, they know exactly what they're doing. They couldn't get me on the cover so done this https://twitter.com/Stormzy1/status/842381588004507648 DEAD. You're NOT a non-profit organisation. The more copies you dish out the more you charge for advertising. You will make money from this. [link] [comments] |
