KOOL A.D. formerly of NY based Das racist is selling $20 freestyle verses for any track you want him on!

Posted: 09 Nov 2021 12:18 PM PST

On his Instagram @veeveeveeveevee you just have to send him a beat, a form of payment, and request a verse.

I am not him or in no way associated, just thought it was cool to be able to secure a verse from someone who is, arguably, a legend.

[DISCUSSION] What do you think about the state of sampling in hip hop: the rise of samples in trap/drill/plugg, nostalgia sampling from 2000s, covering of recent songs or 90s classics from big acts, etc.

Posted: 09 Nov 2021 09:10 AM PST

Been listening to RealYungPhil tapes this morning, the way samples are used are interesting and it feels like this is a trend that's not going away.

On the Evilgiane produced Dr. Phil, samples include "Light Up" by Drake (on Light Up) and Aaliyah's At Your Best cover (on What's the Word)

Some more examples:

Separately, even in established circles: there's been a lot of Three 6 Mafia samples lately, including basically re-making beats from people like Schoolboy Q, Isaiah Rashad, A$AP Ferg, 21 Savage, G Herbo, Cardi B, Freddie Gibbs. This feels like a completely different trend.

Rappers re-making 90s classics including Travis Scott (5% TINT with Goodie Mob), Rick Ross' album Mastermind has a lot of these (Souls of Mischief, Biggie, Pharcyde), Isaiah Rashad (rosegold), J Cole (everybody dies with ATCQ), ALLBLACK (How I Feel with 2Pac), Glockboyz Teejae (After Laughter and Wu-Tang), Kanye (Believe What I Say with Lauryn Hill), Logic (whatever that song is with Can I Kick It), Young Thug (High with Elton John), etc.

The trend with hyper-violent stuff over Kristin Corey wrote about in Noisey I think and Alphonse wrote about in his Column

For the sample drill/plugg/who i smoke trend: It seems like for the most part, this is a bottom-up trend from rappers that A&Rs are trying to catch up with, rather than coming out of Atlanta's established, heavily polished guys like Migos or Young Thug or Gucci Mane.

  • Is sample drill a cheap gimmick or is it a welcome advancement from the non-sampling trap beats of the early 2010s? Chipmunk Soul in it's inception was sort of it's own gimmick.
  • Will these songs stand the test of time at all or is sampling something so popular bound make it age much faster into obsolesce?
  • Were rap fans at the time in the 90s, who had less remove from the 70s and 80s where samples were found, also noticing samples to this extent?
  • It's seen people say it's biting to sample recent popular songs (usually singling out Logic): what makes it biting and what makes it cool?
  • Are stuff like re-makes of 90s hits good for bringing those songs to a new generation or should listeners be looking back to the 90s themselves more?
  • Alphonse Pierre said "The only appeal of these sample drill tracks seems to be: Oh, isn't it so ironic that they are rapping about violence, struggle, jail, and death over this bright and bubbly rehash of a song I used to hear when I was a kid." is that right?

idk feels like that's a bunch of stuff to chew on. If you have more examples go for it or more insight idk.
