Take Care was officially released on 15th November 2011 but was ahm, leaked everywhere on the 7th of November.

With Drake Tweeting, "I am not sure if the album leaked. But if it did thank god it doesn't happen a month early anymore." And then followed up with, "Listen, enjoy it, buy it if you like it...and take care until next time."

As it's 12 am on the 7th in my country right now, I have decided to make a thread looking back for the 10 year thread of the album. As it's 12 am on the 15th in Toronto right now, I have decided to make a thread looking back for the 10 year thread of the album.

I actually remember waking up before school to check any news of the album and it was already leaked. I was 14, going through a period of listening to all of the singles that never made it to the actual album bar Marvins Room and Headlines. It was the festive season in India, Diwali was around the corner when my iPod Touch 2nd Generation was loaded with Marvins Room by Drake, Lil Wayne, Jojo and even Chris Brown. I would walk around my city at 10pm, soaking in the lights and firecracker smell, just walking downtown and listening to all iterations of Marvins Room, all of the singles off Take Care that I will be discussing further in this post.

I went to school waiting to come back and listen to what I didn't know, at the time, was going to completely change my life. Take Care changed how I perceived rap music. I have so many memories with the build-up to the album and then the actual album itself. I was making music at the time, and for the best part of one decade after it dropped, all I ever wanted to do was make music like Take Care.

My focus shifted and all I was trying to do was "make good music" no matter how it came, how it sounded, how much it was different from traditional rap music. It was all about making something that sounded good. And to this day, when I listen to Take Care, I have memories that come flooding back, for the better, with tears.

For my best friend, who produced music, the works of Noah 40 and Boi 1Da were evident. You could just listen to a beat in the album and tell if 40 made it or not. It was a great feeling listening to just the beats and picking out the instruments, stems and synths.

My reviews are biased, for this album. I might appreciate My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy as the best rap album that I have heard, subjectively of course, but Take Care for me will always be special. I will not give it a rating, but I hope to take you guys through the journey this was for me and hear your thoughts on the album and its legacy.

The Tracklist:

1. Over My Dead Body [Prod. By 40 & Chantai Kreviazuk] – A song that felt like it was a continuation of Thank Me Later, but then it already sounded more complete than that entire album. The beat was simple, the sample muffled just enough, and verses that sounded like Drake really enjoyed them. Not a standout by any means, but one song that can play in the background all day and I wouldn't be bothered by it.

2. Shot for Me [Prod. By 40] – The song actually lays out the roadmap for the album very well. Some of Drake's standouts on the project were R&B numbers, verses of singing and capping it off with a rap verse, not hard, but soft. As Drake said in 5AM In Toronto, "Every song sounds like Drake featuring Drake". It really did. The song itself isn't the most special, but it really encapsulates what the album was all about. Solid number regardless, have played it countlessly throughout my life.

3. Headlines [Prod. By Boi-1Da, 40 & Hikwa MM] – One of the singles that actually made it to the album. Spectacular. The music video? Not so much. The track however, was, extremely catchy. I have memories of sneaking my iPod to school while listening to it all throughout the winter. It was one of the first songs that just came on your lips and you could rap the whole thing down without losing a breath. It was the song of the winter, there were no two ways about it. Everybody at school was bumping it, all the local events were playing it, the music stores too, there were posters of Drake in India of all places, it was legit.

4. Crew Love (feat. The Weeknd) [Prod. By Illangelo, The Weeknd & 40] – The Weeknd. House of Balloons was already out. It was in the shadows though, on internet forums but not mainstream. I remember, at the time, I was a sucker for High For This. But my early memories of HoB are very hazy, I remember it, but don't remember my reaction to it. But I do remember, my reaction to Crew Love. The Weeknd's talent was for the world to see, and he did justice to it. Drake's verse felt like a feature. And I was all for it. Drake stood out on The Zone but Crew Love was the superior sound to me, maybe because it was shorter and left something to be desired. The desire to replay it leaps and bounds. Didn't blow up in my city at least but was my top 3 for the album.

5. Take Care (feat. Rihanna) [Prod. By Jamie xx & 40] – One of the weaker songs on the album in my opinion. Did the charts, made the news, broke the records. But to me, it didn't feel as good as some of the others in the album. It was a duet, it didn't have a rap verse. To me, I liked it when Drake was singing on the album, but the rap verse felt weak. I understand it was a radio record but I'd rather hum to it than sing to it. I find myself skipping it time to time, more often than not. It was just not my type, but it was on everybody's Facebook Status and photo captions.

6. Marvins Room / Buried Alive Interlude (feat. Kendrick Lamar) [Prod. By 40 & Supa Dups) – Ahh Marvins Room; the song that I went to for all my heartbreaks, and all my evenings while taking a walk. I listened to it when I woke up, before I went to bed, during walks, everywhere. But on the sound itself, it was perfect. It was the best on the album, it was the peak of Drake featuring Drake, the ethos of the album. I don't think Drake has ever topped the atmosphere and feeling with one song as he did with this. He's recreated a lot of his hits but never been able to substitute this. I really cannot thank him enough for Buried Alive though. It was the first time I had heard Kendrick Lamar. I didn't dig the stems on the track but the flow is pure. Kendrick has made better songs, but this song has so many elements that make Kendrick great. If I didn't hear this, I probably wouldn't have heard of Kendrick for another two years, and I'm thankful for it.

7. Underground Kings [Prod. By T-Minus & 40] – "Sometimes I need that romance, sometimes I need that pole dance, sometimes I need that stripper who gon' tell me that she don't dance." I enjoyed every song that was R&B and rap fused but what I really wanted to hear was Drake rap. He's never been the best at it, but he's been unique. And it was refreshing to hear a full length with 28/30 bars each verse. Not much more to add.

8. We'll Be Fine (feat. Birdman) [Prod. By T-Minus & 40] – Forgettable. Probably my least favourite on the entire album. The vocal sample in the background doesn't fit, Drake feels his sluggish Thank Me Later self. Reminds me of Off That (Jay-Z) where Drake had a mediocre performance. Birdman, the less said the better. Does not add anything to the sound, doesn't alleviate it, doesn't stand out but just comes off as annoying. I haven't heard one decent verse from Birdman since I Made It by Kevin Rudolph or Like This Like That by Jay Sean and those were just ok too.

9. Make Me Proud (feat. Nicki Minaj) [Prod. By T-Minus] – Good, not great. I remember this being a single (or an early leak) and found out about this on that website, I can't recall it. (Red backgrounds some type of hip hop dot com, pretty popular back in the day) I always hold it to Up All Night where it falls short. But still feels like a regular track, not something that holds up an album. I don't feel it lacks the qualities to be a top track but the synergy isn't working out for me. Both artists could probably take these verses and put them on solo projects and it would sound better in my opinion. But still bumped this a whole lot due to the hook.

10. Lord Knows (feat. Rick Ross) [Prod. By Just Blaze] – Oh my god. Coming off Free Spirit which never made it, and Made Men. I was genuinely excited as this was understandably the peak of Rick Ross' career. As soon as I heard You Only Live Twice on CLB, it took me back to this fused with Aston Martin Music. I am a big fan of this style of production with the vocal samples in the background which are enough to give the song an identity that's hard to forget. Drake's verse is a tad bit too long but still no complaints. Rick Ross pulled out one of his better verses, reminds me of his collaborations with Nas, where he always picks up. Overall a very enjoyable experience, Rick Ross' feature was my highlight along with the production quality. The synth going out towards the end was so exciting for me as I looped that thing again and again in my DAW.

11. Cameras/Good Ones Go Interlude [Prod. By 40 & Drake] – Cameras was good, it was enjoyable. Did get a bit repetitive but really not much to say about it outside of that. Great sample post the hook though. Good Ones Go however, was a banger. It felt like it was Marvins Room 2.0; not as good, but just as memorable. I feel like it is the most underrated track of the entire album. It's not too long, not too short, has a bit of singing, bit of vibing, and a bit of rap. Feels like a neat little package.

12. Doing It Wrong [Prod. By 40] – Was pretty popular when it dropped. I liked it but not enough to go gaga over it. The Jazz piece at the end is pretty memorable though. Just a track I can play in the background and forget about it. Was too soft and slow for my liking overall.

13. The Real Her (feat. Lil Wayne & André 3000) [Prod. By 40 & Drake] – Love it. I feel like Drake should've just kept one verse for himself, it was still one of the milestone tracks aka we have reached a certain point in the album. Lil Wayne was good but I was expecting him with a different energy on the album, but this was good too, just felt short compared to the other songs. Felt like Drake on She Will, great, but leaving something to be desired. André had the best verse on the track, hands down. He just went in, and didn't stop. And I loved that! When I read his name on the tracklist for the first time I was like "WHAT", and wanted to hear it asap.

14. Look What You've Done [Prod. By Chase N. Cashe & 40] – Another underrated track of the song. The keyboard strokes, and the muffled party samples in the background gives you a sense of sitting in a classic party, with a single malt in your glass and everybody sporting custom fitted suits. The delivery felt very natural, and as a rapper, it felt like Drake just heard the beat and went "YEAH I'LL WRITE TO THAT" and came up the next morning with the whole thing put together. I can just relate to this track on many levels. If you haven't heard this, I would definitely recommend it.

15. Hell Ya Fucking Right (feat. Lil Wayne) [Prod. By T- Minus] – Timeless. This was the Lil Wayne energy I was referring to on The Real Her. It felt like a shitpost does, it didn't fit with the theme of the album, but I loved it. The synth was borderline comical but it just felt like a goofy track put in there. Broke the flow for me but I think it was a well-timed intervention given how deep we were into the album and away from the certified bangers.

16. Practice [Prod. By 40 & Drake] – Suprisingly good. The end of the album genuinely feels like a fading away in tracks. You know it belongs to the album, you know it is probably not as good as the standouts, but makes you want to stay till the very end of the album every time you hear it. And that was actually the case with a lot of songs on Take Care, they weren't as good as the standouts, the entire album was not on a single level like J. Cole's Forest Hills Drive but you just couldn't find yourself skipping songs. They all had enough to make you want to listen to them and actually enjoy them. I am sure you understand what I am trying to say, and Practice did just that. It also grows very well, the second half is a great evolution from the monotonic first half of the track.

17. The Ride [Prod. By Doc McKinney & The Weeknd] – The Weeknd is back! I mean I know he was a major part of making this album what it was but he was directly involved once again. He's not credited as a feature but I will always count it as one. This felt like House of Balloons, and it was beautiful. Drake was okay in the first verse and good in the second, but the Weeknd was so good to consistently keep the project alleviated. Great listen, especially if you count it as a bonus song in your head cannon from The Trilogy. Felt like a great note of appreciation for the efforts and sounds that made Take Care what it was.

18. The Motto (feat. Lil Wayne & Tyga) Bonus Track [Prod. By T-Minus] – Well the Tyga verse is now <redacted> from all platforms after the beef, but I haven't forgotten about it yet Drake. The song that made all mid-schoolers put YOLO on their BBMs. Again, didn't fit the theme but was a bonus track, did well, I didn't enjoy it a whole lot, but Lil Wayne's verse was great.

19. Hate Sleeping Alone (Bonus Track) [Prod. By 40] – Wow. Another bonus, but this time it was actually in line with the album. The hook was top notch. This is actually one of the tracks that has stuck with me for the decade. I have moved countries twice in the last ten years, discovered countless artists but this one always sticks with me. Has the classic Take Care end to it with the synths playing at the end of the verse and in my memory, will always be my jam in my playlist when I walk around London. Its not as good as it is for me, but the fact that its so special to me, will always retain its place in my heart.

UNRELEASED SINGLES : The album was preceded by a few releases that never made it to the final tracklist, but to me, were absolutely worthy.

1. Dreams Money Can Buy [Prod. By 40] – I don't know why this never made it. This was easily another underground kings, actually better, and would have fit very well. A great beat, beautiful sample and very well controlled flow. This was a part of the music that was in my iPod prior to release as I walked around Diwali lights in the streets of my city. Can listen to this anyday of the week and not be disappointed.

2. Trust Issues [Prod. By Adrian X, Nikhil Seetharam, T-Minus & 40] – I can see why this didn't make it. It feels like another Marvins Room, and too close to actually put it on the album. But it had the full blueprint, two verses of singing, one verse of rap. This was very much a Take Care song as it could be. If the album was structured a different way chronologically, I can definitely see it being a mirror to Marvins Room's position. Can understand why it wasn't on but I definitely would've loved to see it there. One of the better Drake tracks out there, and the remix with The Weeknd would've been the stuff of Dreams if they decided to actually do something with it. Great track, wasted potential with how they could've handled its release.

3. Club Paradise [Prod. By 40] – My favourite out of the four. I have no complaints against it. Maybe the mastering, but another one that was timeless for me. Soft, not too overblown, and Drake talking about women outlandishly, when he has been conservative all throughout the album. I think why Club Paradise, Dreams Money Can Buy and hate Sleeping Alone didn't feature on the main album together, could probably be because the content was too similar. But very enjoyable, in their own sense.

4. Free Spirit (feat. Rick Ross) [Prod. By 40] – It had everything going, good beat, great synth, great stems and bpm, and a balanced song. Compared to Lord Knows, this felt more like a collaboration. Probably because they left it too late for Rozay in Lord Knows. But if you took this in and replaced it, I wouldn't mind it once bit. Most of these felt like they were going to be on the album but only substituted when there were too many releases/leaks from the album before even the summer was up.

And that's it, 3000 words that I will never get back and a bunch of paragraphs nobody asked for. So that was how I feel about Take Care, your opinion, of course can be vastly different. But to me it was the life changing, it changed how I looked at music and how I made it. I know this sub enjoys IYRTITL more than any other Drake project but this to me, will never be topped by himself. Listening to CLB after this just feels like buying $15 fake of an item that you just saw for $450 in the store.

I am interested to hear your thoughts on the project, given its been ten long years since.

[DISCUSSION] Childish Gambino - Camp (10 years later)

10 years ago on November 15th 2011 Childish Gambino (real name Donald Glover) released his debut album Camp. Coming off a string of mixtapes such as "sick boi", "pointdexter", "I am just a rapper" series and his EP called "EP" "Camp was an anticipated release selling 52k copies first week.

Outside of music Childish Gambino wrote and acted on comedy shows like 30 rock (how I found out about him), Community, and assorted stand up acts. Because of this Gambino was able to establish a larger audience than a frankly corny lyrically derivative rapper would have. And made contacts with people in the industry like Ludwig Göransson who worked on Community and produced Camp (he would go on to work on Black Panther, Tenent, and the Creed movies).

Turning to the actual album Camp is essentially peak mixtape Gambino. It's everything he's learned at that point on display. But since his mixtapes were terrible this isn't amazing and parts of Camp are not great (outside of production which is fantastic and has aged well). Like it goes without saying that a 5 minute skit about girls at camp not liking you is shit right (it sounds like Joe from YOU)? Or many songs just saying the same shit 50 times. Or quirky goofy lyrics that are hit or miss.

But when the goofy quirky lyrics hit, they hit. Especially if you were following Gambino as Glover when he was rising in the comedy world. Back when Childish Gambino was just his side hustle those lyrics were pure Donald Glover. Camp is an end of an era for that Glover and 2013s Because of the Internet (BTI) is a different Glover, when Gambino stopped being the side hustle.

Overall the project is definitely important as not only a culmination of Gambino's talent in the studio, but as an important stage in Glover's career as a rapper.
