Posted: 12 Nov 2021 08:05 PM PST

It's been about 24 hours since AEWSS's release, what are y'all's thoughts so far?

How does it rank in Bruno's and Anderson's discographies?

Did it live up to the hype train created by Leave The Door Open?

Favorite track so far?

Bruno Mars & Anderson .Paak’s ‘An Evening With Silk Sonic’ Is A Night You Won’t Soon Forget - Album Review

Posted: 12 Nov 2021 07:26 PM PST

Everything about Silk Sonic is just right. For starters, it makes total sense why Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, although at two very different places in the industry, would team-up. Mars has been fishing for a static image as a vintage showman ever since he figured out the parameters of present pop didn't suit him. .Paak has gravitated towards '70s soul from the beginning. One is waiting for a Michael Jackson moment, the other is more than fine wowing from behind the scenes. You get the point. Together, they can do no wrong. Their bond is certified atop ostentatious funk and soul, making for a fun, seductive, and sometimes soul-stirring experience. In case any further approval was required, Bootsy Collins pops in and out, acting like the duo's personal cheerleader. With this much pazazz at their disposal, you'd be a fool to do anything but sit back, relax, and, if you're feeling snazzy, put on your dancing shoes, to enjoy 'An Evening With Silk Sonic'.

A cynic would argue that this was but the latest cliché experiment in a lengthy history of Mars trying to find his true vocation. On the contrary, he and .Paak are revivalists in good faith, and we're better off for it. Who would invite the world into their retro haven by opening all points of access, literally and figuratively, like they would with their intimate partners ('Leave The Door Open')? Silk Sonic, of course. Its confidence is telling of how rock solid the alliance between the two nostalgia-obsessed artists is. And based on the success of singles, there's good reason for their forwardness now, too. In a relatively short span of time, Mars and .Paak have turned an entire era into their own, despite not even being born to experience the craze during the peak of its popularity.

What .Paak brings to this partnership is a thrilling swagger that Mars has only known in small doses previously. The extent of his larger-than-life attitude is on full display during his rapped verses on 'Fly As Me'. It's a gutsy move dedicating a whole song to just how cool you are, but when the eclectic star jives with the steely purpose of a school bully marking his territory, who would deny his title? Side by side for the entirety of the album, it's clear that some of the rambunctious charm rubs onto Mars, who sounds more alive than ever balling out on '777'. The thrill of gambling is so enticing to the pair, their elation becomes sinister, sporting a frenzied fanaticism that'd turn the most avid Vegas-based addicts away. The throwback is hardly new territory for either of them, but the results of the co-conceived project are, somehow, more delicious than .Paaks most alluring renditions.

Of course, credit goes to Silk Sonic for turning the nostalgia-laden sounds popular 40 and 50 years ago into something that still feels fresh today, too. Many have tried, few have done it with such succinct attention to detail. On high point 'Skate', gallivanting, regal strings respond to Mars' demands, "Oh, skate to me, baby (Skate)/Slide your way on over (Slide your way on over)", by, well, skating into his arms with ardent joy. There's a general contagiousness that follows every twinkling synth, accentuated drum pattern, and sumptuous solo here that'll convince you to participate, whether you're familiar with the genre or not. On top of that, Silk Sonic wields a dual appeal that very few artists of this size can relate to. They're a group with enough technical prowess to please critics and possess more than enough attitude to keep fans engaged. On that evidence, these lads might just resurrect a whole genre as The Weeknd has in part done.

Working against them, though, is the brevity of 'An Evening With Silk Sonic'. With just over half an hour of content, the album lacks the type of long-form, kaleidoscopic appeal many of its model works are known for. It's considerably shorter than any of Bootsy Collins' streamable albums, for instance. The untimely ending is a rude shock, not only for Mars and .Paak, who would have benefitted from spending more time together, but its scantness can also make it feel like a precise, preordained calculation at times. Speaking of premature conclusions, 'After Last Night', a plea to pine after divine strangers, is perhaps the only song where Mars and .Paak aren't working in unison. There's no such thing as a bad Silk Sonic song, but when the duo sound more interested in securing a second shag over singing their hearts out, it's as close as it gets.

Although that passivity can be off-putting, the thought of losing female company typically kicks the duo into another gear. A Bruno Mars album, especially, is hardly a Bruno Mars album unless he has the opportunity to win his lover back by serenading them with at least a dash of cutesy cheese. His most sumptuous display, 'Smokin Out The Window', drags .Paak into despair too, "Not to be dramatic, but I wanna die", he sings with an intentionally dramatized snarkiness. To cope with the pain, the pair resort to smoking, all the while, horns erupt in synchronisation with their irregular heartbeats, which might just burst out of their chests. 'Put On A Smile', on the other hand, settles for a more morose conclusion, reminding us that even internationally known players have a soft side.

While it lasts, 'An Evening With Silk Sonic' is an end-to-end romp that affirms Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak as two of this generation's finest stars. Although it's taken the tropes of an earlier era to aid the former, his arrival as the pimped-out show biz maestro is as rewarding as receiving positive words of affirmation from a loved one. In fact, it's so nice, you'll be so inclined to experience 'An Evening With Silk Sonic' all over again.

An Evening With Silk Sonic - Bruno Mars • Anderson .Paak • Silk Sonic - 8/10
