Happy B-Day J Dilla & Nujabes - Appreciation Thread

Posted: 07 Feb 2020 07:49 AM PST

Today, February 7th, was the day two hip-hop greats were born, J Dilla and Nujabes. They were both born in the same year as well, 1974.

Please post your favorite memories, songs, and discuss their contributions to hip-hop and beyond.

Donuts was my first instrumental hip-hop album when it dropped and changed my life and helped me start appreciating instrumental hip-hop and got me into sampled-based music production.

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Denzel Curry - UNLOCKED

Posted: 07 Feb 2020 01:35 PM PST

Denzel Curry's UNLOCKED has been out for 24+ hours.

Thoughts:

-Denzel seems to be releasing a lot of smaller projects and features recently. My guess is he's got more in store...

-Kenny Beats' production is a lot more versatile. I like Kenny as a personality but I always found his production really generic. This is a nice departure from that.

-Despite the whole "unfinished files" aesthetic, this project is mixed well and finished, especially compared to other EPs like 13.

-It's hilarious how Zel manages to deliver nerdy weeb lines like a cold blooded killer, every time. Some lines are kinda corny but his delivery usually makes up for it.

-"My bitch bad like Battle Rappers that make albums"

-Definitely some CZARFACE influences in this (especially in the production and album art), if you like them check this out/vice versa

Overall I like this project a lot. My favorite tracks would be : So.Incredible.pkg, Track07, Take_it_Backv2, Lay_up.m4a

I know his girlfriend actually is pregnant and I'm happy for the guy, but I can't help but wonder if this is also a scam. Frankly, if you bought a ticket to a Teejayx6 concert online you're just asking for it. He said it himself:

Bought a t-shirt off my website, nigga you're a FOOL!

[DISCUSSION] Ghostface Killah – Supreme Clientele (20 Years Later)

Posted: 07 Feb 2020 06:15 PM PST

To cap off the 2nd wave of Wu solo records, Ghost dropped a dense and mindblowing classic that stands as one of the best Wu records ever released. After spending time in Africa, dealing with the loss of his two brothers, battling almost fatal diabetes, and spending time in Rikers Island, Ghost laid everything into the mic to create one of the most passionate and energetic hip hop performances ever. In a year packed with many incredible hip hop releases, Ghostface set the bar early on with his glamorous and soulful release. Contrary to Ironman, Ghostface uses producers other than RZA, such as JuJu, Mathematics, and even his barber. 20 years later, many people consider this album as the "album that saved the Wu-Tang Clan" and almost everyone views it as a top 2 or 3 Ghostface Killah album.

I encourage you to also check out this write up made by u/98finishing from around 2 weeks ago, which is written very well and goes into full detail on this album.

https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphopheads/comments/ety8ji/a_deep_retrospective_of_supreme_clientele_the/

Fun Fact: User @ HipHopNumbers on Twitter, who digs really deep to gather statistics on certain rappers/albums, calculated a 50.4% unique word percentage for this album, which is the highest he's ever recorded. The next closest album, NASIR by Nas, has 49%. However, that album only runs at 26 minutes, while Supreme Clientele runs for 64.

Discussion points:

Where would you rank this album among Wu-Tang releases?

Favorite Songs?

Do you prefer this album over Ironman or Fishscale?

Do you think this album saved the Wu, or is that an exaggeration?

Is this the best hip-hop release of 2000? Which albums do you think are better?

Are there any rappers who've been involved in more classic releases than Ghostface?

[DISCUSSION] Guide to Korean Hip Hop - Show me the Money 777

Posted: 07 Feb 2020 02:08 PM PST

What is Show Me The Money (SMTM)?

  • Imagine if Rhythm & Flow had the cultural impact of American Idol. An immensely popular show in Korea, Show Me The Money came at a time where hip-hop was becoming more and more popular among young Koreans especially. The producer of SMTM 1 said "My goal was to let people know that there is more than just idol dance music in Korea." Today, Korean hip hop, much like the rest of the world, regularly competes with pop music for chart domination and public recognition. A lot of this mainstream attention to the genre has come from the public, and in return, the celebrity status of rappers has skyrocketed since the beginning of the show. The "system" of SMTM has been off and on critizied as detrimental to the culture, but nevertheless the show is always a great showcase of the up and coming and also the established of KHH.

What's the format like?

  • The format changes from season to season, but the basic principle is rappers are eliminated up until a certain round where they are picked by a producer team and compete against the rappers of other producer teams until a winner is decided.

In this summary, I'm going to be summarizing the most recent English subtitled season, SMTM 777. I'm going to separate the spoiler and non spoiler stuff as best I can. It actually wrapped up in October 2018, but the english subtitling team only recently finished subbing the series.

The full episodes can be found on the KHiphop Subs FB page here (just scroll down)

PRODUCER TEAMS -

Swings and Giriboy (Just Music/Indigo Music)

  • the CEO (and now former CEO) of Just Music and Indigo Music, a sublabel of Just Music consisting of trendy young artists (Kid Milli, Young B, Jvcki Wai (formerly as of the end of 2019), NO:EL (totaled his reputation), Justhis), Swings and Giriboy are a duo of a monster rapper and a genius producer/rapper. Swings, who initially blew up due to his appearances on SMTM 2, has a powerful voice and charismatic presence comparable to Denzel Curry, although he has been showing off his versatility as of late. Giriboy is a producer/rapper who along with his own successful rap career, has produced many a hit for SMTM contestants and other famous rappers in the past, and his participation in SMTM 777 was greatly anticipated by many. He's not afraid to get experimental, and his range of beats is super impressive. He also has a cute dog. Seriously, it's cute

Songs to check out -

DDING - Jvcki Wai, Young B, Osshum Gum, Han Yo Han (prod. Giriboy) - This song hit number 1 in Korea in late January 2019, and Giriboy's production supports the infectious energy from Jvcki Wai and the rappers verses.

Work Out - Kid Milli, Jvcki Wai, NO:EL, Young B, Swings - Cut from the Indigo Music label compilation album, with the label's rappers showing their unique style before Swings shuts it down with the last verse

acrnm - Giriboy ft. Goretexx - Weird beats are Giriboy's speciality both as a producer and as a rapper, and his love song to the ACRNM tech wear brand is no exception. Very reminiscent of a JPEGMafia sort of experimental vibe.

Red Sun - Hangzoo ft. Swings - A hit song from SMTM6, Swings shows off his monster feature power with his verse.

Blind - Monsta X prod. Giriboy - A song from idol group Monsta X, this emotional banger is enhanced with Giriboy's production, specifically during the rap verse.

Further Content (Personality/Famous Moments)

Indigo Music is a mess

Paloalto (Hi-Lite Records) and Code Kunst (AOMG)

  • The founder of Hi-Lite Records (G2, Reddy, Keith Ape (former member)) and the jazzy producer from AOMG (Jay Park, Simon Dominic, Gray, Loco...) combine for this team. Paloalto participated in SMTM 4 as a producer team with Zico, placing 2nd place alongside the team's rapper Mino of Winner. A veteran rapper praised for his lyricism, Paloalto has lots of experience to bring to his team. He's backed up by Code Kunst, a producer who is especially famous for his signature jazzy chill sounding beats. He's worked with many famous KHH artists, and even released a song in 2015 with Tablo of Epik High and Joey Badass. Highly sought after, he signed with AOMG after leaving YG Entertainment, and his name value rises with every song he releases.

Songs to check out -

XI - Code Kunst ft. Lee Hi

  • The second song in Code Kunst's collab series with Lee Hi, her vocals soar over the laid back beat.

Dead/Get It - Paloalto

  • - This album is one of the best albums to come out in 2019, highly recommend

Stronger - Code Kunst ft. Loco, Mino

Wayne - JUSTHIS, Paloalto ft. G2

Hood - Tablo, Joey Badass (prod. Code Kunst)

Deepflow and Nucksal (VMC)

  • The CEO and representative rapper of Vismajor Company (Don Mills, ODEE, BIGONE...) an old school hip hop crew that specializes in boom-bap, Deepflow and Nucksal are a lethal combo. No stranger to survival shows, Deepflow was a producer on SMTMs sister show High School Rapper, and Nucksal was the runner up as a contestant in SMTM6, losing to Rhythm Power's Hangzoo by an extremely slim margin. Their team is especially beneficial to boom-bap rappers looking to advance into top rounds.

Songs to check out -

Jakdu (Cut Cut Cut) - Deepflow ft. Nucksal, Huckleberry P

Three Kings - Nucksal ft. Dynamic Duo, DJ Friz

Brr Get$ - Nucksal, Jo Woochan ft. Don Mills

The Quiett and Changmo (Illionaire Records/Ambition Musik)

  • The Quiett, no stranger to Show Me The Money having been a producer in seasons 3 and 5, returns to the show this time without Dok2, his former co-CEO at Illionaire Records. In his place is Changmo, the "genius pianist" and leader of Ambition Musik, whose production, melodies and live piano performances enhance his fast flow and lyrical ability.

Songs to check out -

Selfmade Orange - Changmo ft. Superbee - One of the most impressive displays of technical skill from both Changmo and Superbee.

Prime Time - The Quiett

Aiya - Changmo ft. Beenzino

A Lil Bit - Sik-K ft. Simon Dominic, The Quiett

Artist Profiles

(Note : these are not all the contestants. These are noteworthy contestants who appeared on this season. This section is spoiler free.)

Nafla and Loopy (MKIT Rain) -

"I'm here to make money." - Nafla

"If Nafla is fire, Loopy is ice." - Code Kunst

  • I tried writing about these two separately but it's nigh impossible to mention one without talking about the other. The Pasadena-born Nafla linked up with in LA with the South Korea-born Loopy to form the MKITRAIN label together with Bloo, another noteworthy artist from LA, in early 2016. While Nafla stays true to his boom-bap roots, his music, influenced in part by Loopy and his style, has begun to take on some more tones of trap and melody. While Nafla's technical skill and presence is impressive, Loopy takes a more melodic approach to his music. They are two of the most highly anticipated contestants of this season.

Wu - Nafla

  • Nafla's most famous song, a tribute to Wu Tang Clan

Loopy - Gear 2 (OG Live version) / CDQ, Remastered 2018

  • A song that brought attention to Loopy and his incredible flow in 2014, shot while he was still active in LA. Remastered version appeared on his album King Loopy in 2018.

Rough World - Nafla ft. Loopy

  • Boom-bap song that brought a lot of attention to the upstart MKITRAIN label

Don't Move - MKIT Rain (Young West, Nafla, Loopy, Bloo)

  • Posse cut of MKIT Rain, similar to Gospel by XXX, Keith Ape, and Rich Brian

Mijangwon - Dumbfoundead ft. Nafla, Loopy

  • Great collab from 2015 with dumbfoundead, both guest verses exemplify their style

Superbee (YNG & Rich Records)

"If you just tolerate me this once, I swear I won't come out to this show ever again." - Superbee

  • Superbee is a rapper who's participated in every Show Me The Money season, sans season 6. Of those 5 times, he's been eliminated at audition stage 3 times, advanced through team song stage, but been cut before a chance for a solo stage (season 4), and made it to top 3 (season 5). Although he's had scuffles with controversy in the past (Dissing Epik High's Tablo post S4, taking heat for his attitude in S5), his flow has been upgraded for this season and he's considered a strong contender for the win.

Heu - Superbee

  • Basically Superbee just flexing his flow for 2 minutes. He performed this song for his fire pit stage.

82 Bars - Superbee

  • Probably his most famous song outside of Show Me The Money

Air DoTheQ - The Quiett, Superbee myunDo, Flowsik, Dok2

  • This song's famous for other reasons (Flowsick sounds fuckin scary here) but he's got a nice verse on this one

Kid Milli (Indigo Music)

"Kid Milli, Kid Milli, Kid Milli, Kid Milli x 100 - Code Kunst

  • Kid Milli, the trendy artist of Korean-Hip Hop, caused a big stir when he announced he would be participating in SMTM for this season. His flow is completely unique, somehow offbeat and on beat at the same time while spitting out an insane amount of words and his lyrical ability has also been praised. Growing up wanting to be a Starcraft pro-gamer, he switched to hip-hop and got signed to Producer Team Swings & Giriboy's Indigo Music. He's pegged as a near certainty to place top 2. Takes lots of inspiration from A$AP Rocky.

Why Do Fuckbois Hang Out On The Net - Kid Milli

  • Kid Milli's most famous song, him just going hard for 2ish minutes over a trippy house beat

indiGO - JUSTHIS, Kid Milli, NO:EL, Young B

  • Song for Indigo Music label compilation with label mates JUSTHIS, NO:EL (High School Rapper fame), and Young B (High School Rapper S1 winner, SMTM6 Top 10, SMTM8 runner up). His verse exhibits his smoothness and natural knack for creating a hype song seemingly without much effort.

SPOILERS START HERE

Top 15 Songs of the Season

bite - Nafla (prod. Giriboy) - CDQ / Live Performance

  • The first of only 3 songs without a feature this season, Nafla's first round submission played to his boom-bap strengths and hyped up the entire crowd for his finishing move, where he ascended literally (on stage) and figuratively with a demonic refrain to end the song.

119 - Nafla, pH-1, Kid Milli, OLNL, Loopy, Superbee ft. Gray (prod. Gray) - CDQ / Live Performance

SUPERBEEWHY - Superbee ft. Bewhy (prod. Bewhy) - CDQ / Live Performance

  • So, the thing that you need to understand before watching this is that Bewhy is practically a god of Korean-Hip-Hop (Winner of SMTM 5), and not just cause he's a devout Christian. His stages in season 5 catapulted him to superstardom (especially Forever and Fake pt. 2. Those two stages are almost required viewing for new people to Korean Hip-Hop. So after Superbee pops off in the opener, he brings out Bewhy looking like a literal assassin with a flow that exemplifies why he's just on another level. There are parts of this stage I don't like (autotuned chorus that falls kinda below expectation live), but this shit is probably Superbee's best thing he's ever done after 6 seasons of being on SMTM.

NoNo - Loopy ft. Simon Dominic (Prod. Code Kunst) - CDQ / Live Performance (Winning prod. Code Kunst + NoNo)

  • To beat Superbee's ridiculously packed SUPERBEEWHY stage, Loopy pretty much had to show a perfect stage to progress to the final. Starting off with a appetizer song before the main song, Loopy exploded onto the stage with "NoNo" with one of the most charismatic stages of the season, which seemed to really connect with the audience and pushed him over Superbee's stage. Simon Dominic's feature (SMTM 5 winning producer with Gray and team rapper Bewhy) adds just enough to Loopy's stage while not overwhelming his presence.

MOMM (Money On My Mind) (prod. Code Kunst) - Kid Milli ft. JUSTHIS - CDQ / Live Performance

  • This song really grew on me, in no small part to the addicting chorus and JUSTHIS's killer feature. The beat is pure magic from Code Kunst once again (who honestly helped carry Kid Milli to Top 3). Milli caught a lot of flack for some weak live performances, but his flow is extremely difficult to execute live and detracts some of his presence. He showed up for this stage though, and his bro JUSTHIS was able to shut down the whole thing with probably the best feature this season.

Change - Kid Milli ft. Gray (Prod. Code Kunst) - CDQ / Live Performance

  • Kid Milli actually caught a lot of shit for winning this round (due to EK's extremely charismatic stage), but this song, once again with Code Kunst on the beat, is a really nice view into Milli's mental state and attitude toward SMTM. Gray's feature ("He's really good looking" - everyone ever) helped to bring this one home and makes for a really raw and honest look at Kid Milli the rapper and Choi Won Jae the person.

SF (Science Fiction) Skills - Giriboy, ODEE, Nafla, OLNL, Swings (prod. Giriboy) - CDQ / Live Performance ft. YunB

  • The CDQ of this is fucking nuts. If you're a fan of someone like JPEGMafia and his flow of some of Kenny Beats stuff, you'll really fuck with this one. It's got that appropriate level of Giriboy's weird percussion to make it a banger. Best verse goes to either ODEE's rapid fire verse or Nafla's "N-A-to the FLA" hype verse. Live performance is kinda messy, as the beat doesn't translate well to live and Nafla almost fucks up completely, but it's still hard.

Good Day - PH-1, Kid Milli, Loopy, Paloalto (prod. Code Kunst) - CDQ / Live Performance ft. Qwala

  • This song was a mega hit in Korea on release due to the starpower in this song (PH-1 was also a favorite to win the entire season). Each verse is perfect for each rapper niche and it's just a really easy listen. Best verse probably goes to Loopy, but it's close.

XXL - Keem Hyo Eun ft. Deepflow, Dok2 - CDQ / Live Performance

  • Going up against Nafla in the first round, Keem Hyo Eun pretty much knew he was fucked. So he pulled out his final worthy stage and features of both his producer Deepflow and his boss Dok2 for this boom-bap banger. Did he still get crushed? Yeah. But honestly, no one stood a chance against Nafla in this round.

saimsaim - Coogie, Superbee, D.Ark, Changmo - CDQ / Live Performance ft. Lee Dongmin

  • The group song for team Changmo + The Quiett, this song was very popular as well for it's positive vibes and catchy chorus. Best verse probably goes to Coogie for that high note (side note - I absolutely LOVE Coogie's music. I don't have room in the artist profiles for him as he didn't do much this season but check out Movin' and Movin', Suzaran, and his recent EP. His melodies are addicting).

GOD GOD GOD - EK - Live Performance / CDQ - The song that put EK and the MBA crew on the map, a powerful live stage even though it falls a little flat in CDQ. Set the stage for MBA's popular releases in Trap House, Lambo, and Party Monster.

Jaskis - EK, ODEE, Zene the Zilla, Coogie - CDQ / Live Performance

  • Traditionally SMTM does a song with popular eliminated contestants in their final episode. This song included Zene the Zilla, who many felt had the talent to go all the way despite an unfortunate elimination in team select. Solid verses from everyone.

Pickupman - Nafla (ft. Swings and Giriboy) - CDQ / Live Performance (Intro Song - Wu)

  • This season's final songs were pretty weak, but this song was definitely a stand out due to the killer beat from Lnb and Giriboy actually rapping on a song with his agressive flow.

Boss Thang - Kid Milli ft. Young B - CDQ / Live Performance (Intro Song - WHY DO FUCKBOIS HANG OUT ON THE NET

  • Kid Milli got shit all season for his weak live stage presence, but this stage is probably the most confident of all his stages in terms of delivery and interacting with the crowd. Young B's feature is insanely good, and the CDQ really brings out the beauty in Code Kunst's production.

Summary

Even though I'm not Korean and can't understand it, the production of Korean-Hip-Hop is something that's really fresh and keeps me coming back to it year after year. Any questions you have about a certain artist or recommendations, I'm more than willing to answer.
