Rethinking Discussion Posts + Overposted Favorites List Update

Posted: 17 Oct 2018 03:21 PM PDT

As we announced in the Sunday General Discussion, the modteam has been discussing some unwritten changes in policy that have been slowly creeping up over the last few years, possibly to the detriment of the sub. TL;DR we're explicitly allowing discussion threads outside of the DD provided they aren't low-quality, done-to-death topics, or simple questions better suited for the DD/Moronic Monday.

Let me give an overview of the history here:

When Daily Discussion threads were created back in 2013, the main goal was "to reduce clutter so if you have some thoughts on an album, a quick discovery (Large Professor started using sleigh bells instead of cymbals?), or something to say, we'd encourage you to use this thread"—not for all discussion period to be relegated to this thread. Later that year, DDs were made to be hiphop-only because people were spamming it up with middle school relationship problems and well...whodatmiami happened. That post contained a mission statement, and I'm going to quote it in full here because 5 years later this is still the philosophy behind the modteam's every action.

As we head towards 200K and beyond, our aim is to ensure that this is a subreddit where the focus is hip-hop and there is a balance between humor and serious discussion. We envision this sub being a clean, easily navigable hub for all things hip hop which allows for free and well thought out discussion about hip hop at a ease seen nowhere else on the internet, which is the root of where our decisions are coming from.

Improving this subreddit is a constant work in progress, but our decisions are motivated by that end goal of providing a great hub for hip hop news and music while not sacrificing the user experience and sense of community.

All of the decisions we make are still guided by the idea of maintaining a balance between serious discussion and humor and making sure the former isn't completely lost. However, over the last few years the de-facto moderation policy has shifted slightly away from the stated goal of "free and well thought out discussion about hip hop" despite there not being any rule banning discussion threads. It started off as simply removing low-quality and done-to-death topics (which are banned in the sub rules) and telling people to put them in the Daily Discussion instead, but at some point it shifted to all discussion being relegated to the DD (or fresh album discussion threads) despite unicorn "high quality" discussion threads still technically being allowed. Meanwhile, the frontpage of the sub got more and more filled up with social media beef threads and other links that merely encouraged extremely low-quality discussion.

Which brings me to the announcement:

After discussion within the modteam, we have decided to make the de-facto moderation policy more closely align with the written rules and the above mission statement. The discussion thread a few days ago is an example. We will be trying this out for a while—explicitly allowing discussion threads but still enforcing the rules re: low-quality discussions and simple questions that would be better for the Daily Discussion. We will also be asking for your help updating the list of done-to-death topics (the current list hasn't been updated in a few years) that we've already seen asked every single day in the DD. This list will actually be enforced, and will be treated something like the Overposted List. As for other general discussion threads, they'll be treated like reposts of songs and not allowed to have another thread asking the same thing within a year.

Overposted/Favorites List Updates

Songs from albums on the Favorites/Overposted List are not allowed to be posted. They can still be discussed in the daily discussion.

Finally some reminders:

  • [SHOTS FIRED] is for beef between two rappers/R&B artists/future beats producers. If Eric Holder tells Kanye to meet him in Temacula, that's not postworthy because Eric Holder isn't a rapper.

  • Don't post albums before they come out in North America, that's generally 12AM EST.

  • Social media posts should be self posts, so they can be updated.

If you have any feedback or suggestions, feel free to post it here.
