[DISCUSSION] Brockhampton - SATURATION II (1 Year Later)

Posted: 23 Aug 2018 04:49 PM PDT

SATURATION II is Brockhampton's second studio album and was released in late August 2017, only a few months after the release of their debut, SATURATION. The album was supported by 4 singles, "Gummy", "Swamp", "Junky" and "Sweet".

What do you think of this album one year since its release?

Some points for discussion:

  • How does this album compare to the rest of the Saturation trilogy?

  • Who has your favourite verse?

  • What do you think of the production? Would you have preferred more variety over the 3 releases or did you like the consistent and recognisable sound?

  • What are the best and worst tracks? If you had to make one SATURATION album, how many of SATURATION II's tracks would be on it?

  • Do you prefer Brockhampton's more aggressive tracks or the smoother, more melodic cuts?

  • On tracks like JUNKY and FIGHT, the lyrics address more complex and personal issues. Do you think Brockhampton tackled these topics effectively?

  • What do you think of the group's chemistry? Do they complement each other well and is there enough building of distinct themes?

  • What are the album's biggest weaknesses? What would you like to see Brockhampton do differently in future releases?

[DISCUSSION] Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (20 Years Later)

Posted: 23 Aug 2018 06:05 AM PDT

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the debut solo album by singer and rapper Lauryn Hill. It incorporates musical styles from neo-soul, R&B, hip hop, and reggae. The lyrics focus on Lauryn's pregnancy and turbulence within the Fugees, as well as exploring themes of love, motherhood, heartbreak and God.

The album's chart debut broke the record for first-week sales by a female artist and by 2013 it had sold over 19 million units worldwide. Lauryn was also the first woman to receive as many nominations (10) and rewards (5) as she did in a single night at the Grammy Awards. This album is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time and in 2015 it was included by the Library of Congress in the National Recording Registry.

What do you think about this album 20 years later?

Some points for discussion:

  • Does it deserve classic status?

  • What is your favourite track?

  • How does this compare to Lauryn's work in the Fugees?

  • Did you enjoy the overall sound of the album and the fusion of different genres? Lauryn said herself that she "didn't want to come out with a Fugees type of sound", but create "something that was uniquely and very clearly a Lauryn Hill album".

  • What did you think of the shots aimed at Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel?

  • Did you like Lauryn's production, with her aim being to make the music sound raw and not computer-aided?

  • How much influence do you feel this album had?
