Hip-Hop Listening Club of the Week #256: El-P - Cancer 4 Cure

Posted: 10 Aug 2018 04:29 AM PDT

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

Today we'll be listening to Cancer 4 Cure by El-P

This album was selected by /u/tritso

Background by /u/tritso

A year before officially partnering up with Killer Mike and reaching new levels of mainstream success as Run The Jewels, rapper/producer El-P dropped a true gem on us with his fourth studio album. Dedicated to his close friend and fellow artist Camu Tao who died of lung cancer in 2008, this is a record that somehow manages to pull off the dark and unflinching sounds that we've come to expect from El-Producto, while also being able to build on those sounds and still be his most accessible and polished solo work to date. This is an album filled with complex lyricism, heavy themes and some truly sadistic production, and it's clear that El-P had a vision and brought that vision to life without letting anyone compromise it. The cameos throughout the record, most notably from Danny Brown and Killer Mike, sound like they're emerging from the shadows, and then proceeding to return to whoever they came from after their contribution is over. Similar to how you always know you're watching a Quentin Tarantino movie because it's so distinctively his, you always know you're listening to an El-P album. Nobody else could make this shit, and 6 years later it sounds as just as fresh and innovative as it did when it first dropped.

El-P kept a blog during the creation of this album, which you can find here. Reading through this might give a new perspective to the album, like this post for example, where he shares a poem that inspired a song on the album.

August Announcements (ONE MILLION SUBS EDITION): New Rules and Feedback Thread

Posted: 10 Aug 2018 10:50 AM PDT

It's been a long time coming since the Acura days, but we've finally made it to a million (RIP Vern Troyer).

It's also been six months since the last announcement thread, so naturally there's a lot to announce:

New Rules

[HYPE] Wednesday

There will be a weekly thread on Wednesdays where people can post songs by artists who haven't gotten 50+ upvotes on the subreddit. We saw that people liked the idea behind [HYPE WEEK] but were discouraged by the extremely high posting volume it lead to and experience fatigue after a while. Taking this into consideration, we decided on [HYPE] Wednesday.

Review Threads

Parent comments in review threads must be over 140 characters. Comments that solely name the score or describe the clothing the reviewer is wearing are not allowed. Meta comments about how the subreddit will react to the review are also not allowed. Comments that only compare the review to other scores by other publications are not allowed.

Trending Topics

If there is already a highly-upvoted thread or multiple threads about a particular topic at any given time, reposts, minor updates and other threads may be removed at moderator discretion, even the thread is not against the rules of the subreddit. For example, if there are multiple Kanye West threads about his most recent project/song/outburst/etc., a thread about Kanye describing his tattoo in 2002 may be removed. If there is a thread about Pusha T's new Drake diss, a thread reminding everyone that he recorded a jingle for McDonald's in 2003 may be removed. If A$AP Rocky is finally releasing an album, a thread about his meeting Aesop Rock five years earlier may be removed. if Kid Cudi and Kanye West release an album, a thread about every sample used on the album may be removed. These types of threads can be posted as comments in an existing discussion thread, the Daily Discussion thread, or at a later date when the sub is not being dominated by that particular artist or topic.

Album Discussion Threads:

There are four types of official album discussion threads: Fresh (immediate,) First Impressions (at least 17 hours later, typically 5:00 PM EST,) Discussion (1 week later) and milestone anniversary (1, 5, 10, 20, 25 or 30 years,) any other album discussion threads are subject to removal.

Deaths

In the event that an artist relevant to this subreddit passes away, an official memorial thread will be posted by moderators after their death has been confirmed. In this thread, no trolling, jokes or disrespectful comments of any kind will be tolerated. Those who violate the rules of the thread will receive either a lengthy or permanent ban without warning. All songs by the artist and non-news posts about the artist (e.g. reactions, tributes, etc.) should be posted within this thread, any posted outside of this thread will be removed whether or not they violate subreddit rules. These changes are being made for several reasons:

  1. Keeping songs in one thread will prevent the influx of songs posted after the death of an artist from affecting 365-day repost cycles.
  2. There won't be an unmanageable number of threads for users to report to us for no reason other than that they didn't like the artist or that they disagree with what someone in the comments section had to say.
  3. This will prevent the entire subreddit from being completely dominated by one topic for 48-72 hours.

Because there will be a memorial thread with zero tolerance for disrespectful comments, threads breaking & updating the news of the artist's passing may not be as closely or strictly moderated as they have been in the past.

[SHOTS FIRED] Threads

[SHOTS FIRED] tags are reserved for actual beef between rappers, and these posts must be self posts (text-only posts) so that they can be updated throughout the day. If OP does not make their thread a self post, or if they make a text post and fail to edit their post with updates, the post may be removed and replaced with a megathread regardless of the number of upvotes or comments.

Streaming Additions & Removals

Threads about older albums being added to or removed from streaming services are only allowed under the following circumstances:

Because albums are removed & re-added all the time for various reasons, the following threads are not allowed:

The only exception that would allow for a thread about the removal of an album or albums is in the case that an artist, label or service announces that the removal is because there are changes being made to the album or because the removal is permanent.

Announcement Reposts

If you repost an approved announcement (project, release date, cover art, tracklisting/credits, exclusivity or collaboration) that has already broken the top 10 posts on the page (not counting pinned threads,) you will receive a temporary ban.

It takes seconds to see if a thread has already been posted about a topic. Reposting an announcement from a popular artist a few minutes after somebody else has posted it is understandable and excusable, reposting an announcement from a popular artist hours later is not.

Upcoming Releases: Trolling & Shitposting

If you make a post to troll users by intentionally misleading them into believing that something has been released (or postponed, cancelled, or anything similar,) you will either be banned until after that album has been released or you will be banned permanently, the length of the ban is entirely up to the moderator who has to remove the post.

For example, if you post "[FRESH] Travis Scott - Astroworld" with a link to There's Really A Wolf by Russ, you'll be banned until sometime after the Astroworld [FRESH] and [FIRST IMPRESSIONS] threads have come and gone, if not banned permanently.

Shitposts about upcoming albums (useless/pointless threads, threads about how good or bad the album is before you've heard it, memes, jokes, image posts, emoji stories, etc.) will receive similar bans. Save your shitposts for the [FRESH] thread.

Rumors, speculation, hopes, expectations and everything else can be discussed in any Daily Discussion thread or any of the allowed announcement threads that have been posted about the album.

Collaboration/Join My Band/Let's Make a Group Threads

This is not the place to try to form the next Brockhampton. If that's what you're looking for, try /r/makinghiphop/, /r/MusicInTheMaking/ or /r/NeedVocals/.

Reminders

Twitter & Instagram

Because users often post updates/responses throughout the day when using services like Twitter & Instagram, threads linking posts from Twitter or Instagram must be self posts. This does not only apply to [SHOTS FIRED] posts, it applies to all posts from social media, whether they are track listings, cover art, tour announcements or anything else. Threads linking directly to tweets or Instagram posts may be removed at moderator discretion.

[FRESH] Threads

If a song, album, mixtape or music video is released by an artist based in North America, [FRESH] threads are not allowed until the album is available throughout North America, which is typically at Midnight Eastern/9:00 PM Pacific. Threads posted any earlier (even by minutes) will be removed. If the artist is based outside of North America, Fresh threads may be posted when the release is available locally whether or not the release is available in North America.

The [FRESH] tag is reserved for songs, albums, mixtapes and music videos, the tag is not for album announcements, tracklists, preorders, interviews, reviews or any kind of unofficial rips or captures (e.g. live performances & Instagram Stories.)

Leak Threads

Leak threads are for songs & albums that have actually leaked, not for songs & albums that have been legally released in another time zone. A leak thread is not appropriate if a Fresh thread is expected later in the day.

Criticism/Feedback/Advice on my Song/Album/Mix/Review/Article/etc.

Users are encouraged to post original content, but they should not treat the sub like a focus group. If you are creating content relevant to this subreddit, you are welcome to post your finished product in a format described in the Guidelines/FAQ. Threads with titles seeking criticism, feedback or advice will be removed. If you're seeking help or feedback, there are other subreddits that are more appropriate (e.g. /r/makinghiphop/ or /r/writing/.)

Image/Meme Posts

These posts are never allowed. Those who violate the rule are subject to temporary or permanent bans.

Overused/Formulaic Comments

These are banned. Some more recent examples of these are:

  • Comments ending in "chief"
  • Russ takes an L
  • did you hear sumn
  • Comments with intentionally false information ("wow the album wasn't great but he didn't have to call him the n-word")
  • Saying very explicit sexual things for shock value

[DISCUSSION] Milo - Who Told You To Think?!?!?!??! (One Year Later)

Posted: 10 Aug 2018 10:09 AM PDT

With Nostrum Grocers coming out, and the final "Milo" project to be released later this year, I thought itd be interesting to discuss Milos album from last year. Questions to help with discussion:

  1. After sitting on this project, where does this rank with the rest of Milos discography?
  2. What was your favorite feature from this project?
  3. Where did this land on your best of 2017 list?
  4. This is the first Milo project to have Scallops Hotel (milos beat making moniker) production featured on it. Does Milo benefit from having several producers come in with scallops hotel, or does working with one producer for an entire project work better? (Scallops hotel projects, So The Flies Dont Come was all Kenny Segal)
  5. Is it annoying to not understand what Milos talking about on some of his bars?
