Have a question that you need answered? Was it not answered last week? Did not get a satisfying answer? Or a question that you feel is too small to make a new thread for? Maybe something you think everyone but you knows?

Ask that question in this thread.

Questions must be on topic, concise, and answerable. Answers must be a real answer that solves the question. Do not ask a question that can be covered in the resources section.

[GUIDE] GUIDE TO KEITH APE/KID ASH (AKA 키이스 에이프/키드애쉬)

Posted: 02 Oct 2017 03:56 PM PDT

BEFORE I GET STARTED, JOIN ME AT /r/Cohort

I made a comment in the new Achoo! music video thread but it got drowned out and i reached the comment limit so i'm making a full ass post

Introduction

Keith Ape (키이스 에이프), also known as Lee Dongheon (이동헌), formerly known as Kid Ash (키드애쉬), is a Korean rapper from Seoul, South Korea. He makes cloud rap/trap-like music that took the Western world (before he even became popular in South Korea) by storm. He began under the name Kid Ash, a signee of Hi-Lite records in Korea, and worked with several other labelmates in a group they called "The Cohort" (shoutout /r/Cohort), but with several other nicknames -- you may know them as the "Underwater Squad", the "Orca Ninjas", and so forth. He was actually never the big one in the group. Hi-Lite Records' biggest member was Paloalto, the founder. Even still, in South Korea, Keith Ape seems to be subtly outshined by Okasian, who has been collaborating with some of the biggest stars: G-Dragon and Jay Park, for example. From the Cohort crew, only Reddy and G2 ever made it to Show Me The Money, South Korea's biggest hip-hop talent show, something that doesn't really exist in the United States -- so it'd be hard to understand. But SMTM dominate the music industry and have a correlational relationship with who is popular. Keith Ape was never chosen. He was the underdog.

With very little fans in South Korean's mainstream, he blew up in the United States very suddenly after the mega-hit, It G Ma, featuring his two buddies Okasian and JayAllDay, as well as Japan's biggest rapper, KOHH. Oh, and Loota was featured. (Not that anyone cares about Loota.) After it blew up online, everyone wanted a piece of him, and soon after Complex made a remix video with a lineup of other popular American rappers, only to be remixed even further by other artists with some buzz, such as Anderson .Paak. Everyone's worries as to whether Keith Ape could ever put out another hot song were vanquished when the release of Underwater Rebels, also quickly blowing up online. Since then, he has been signed to Dumbfoundead's CXSHXNLY crew, and managed under 88rising/Sean Miyashiro (of Vice). With him, he took Okasian and other Cohort members. This unintentionally started a trend, in which other popular Korean acts -- such as B-Free, Loopy, Nafla, bloo, etc. -- have also come to Los Angeles/88rising. Yes, It G Ma has been accused of biting OG Maco's U GUESSED IT, but Keith is undeniably a trendsetter. He says so himself.

When Eminem was sued in 2003 by the bully, DeAngelo Bailey for slandering him in the song "Brain Damage", the judge threw out the case and provided the ruling by rapping it.
