| Proof - Katt Williams stole JB Smoove's "That music is the shit" joke Posted: 05 Aug 2017 09:28 PM PDT TL;DR - I've found/uploaded 'never before seen' footage of JB Smoove in 1996 doing a joke about a song being "the shit". Katt Williams would do the same bit in his 2007 special "American Hustle" without anyone knowing he 'most likely' copied it. Maybe he didn't, maybe JB Smoove gave his blessing. I don't know. Most likely because there's no footage of it, until now. Long story - I'm a 32 year old born and bread Aussie. My uncle is from North Carolina and moved here 30 years ago. His family would send him VHS recordings of NBA games and Def Comedy Jam. As a teenager I would borrow his tapes and it was part of the reason I fell in love with Hip Hop. I remember seeing JB's set when I was about 14. I thought it was great and innovative for its time. I liked it enough to remember it. Then I saw Katt's special and knew I had seen that joke somewhere before... on Def Comedy Jam. Fast forward to the present, I found the old VHS tape, played through it randomly and found the bit. So I ripped it and here it is. In my opinion Katt does a great job of improving the joke. I enjoy both comedians (I think JB is massively underrated) and I just find it interesting that a massively popular comedian blatantly used another comedian's bit and no one noticed.
