Rappers to Watch From Every State in 2017 #8 - KS, MS, SD, WV, WY

What's good fam hope classes are going well for y'all and that you won't wait until the end of the semester to talk to that cute boy/girl who is sitting next to you.

Who: AyEl
SoundCloud
Age: 22
Location: Kansas City, Kansas
Recent Projects: Silver Lining (2016)

Songs to Check Out:

The second artist out of a city on the cusp of being the next big one on the map, Kansas's artist is out of the KS side of KC. With a voice similar to Kdot's and a flow similar to some of the bigger artists in the game, he has a good combination going forward to be another headlining artist in his city's movement. His most recent single shows his versatility and ability to create hooks out of thin air ("Motion" – the hook was freestyled). He may not be a hugely known entity yet, but with his transition into streaming services like Spotify, he's shown he's serious about trying to make this dream his reality.

AyEl has a lot of things working in his favor as an artist. He's got a good voice for the gig, with "Motion" showcasing his ability to emulate the sounds that got songs like "One Dance" to reach the heights they did. He's great at working hooks and melodies, and he has a pretty decent ear for beats. As I mentioned earlier, his flow is pretty good too; I can't quite put my finger on who it reminds me of, but it's familiar for anybody who listens to the biggest artists in the game right now. He does have some areas to improve, mostly his mixing. As a whole it's great, but there can be a pretty noticeable difference between songs – look at "To/Commitment" mashup on his soundcloud. I'd compare him most to another artist on the list, SpazzyD. He may not have quite the same lyrical ability of Spazzy but also has more of his own unique sound and seems to be more radio ready.

The KU student isn't the biggest name in KC right now but it wouldn't surprise me to him up there soon enough. He has the portfolio, talent, flexibility, and willingness to try new things that could put him on the map. His hip-hop and R&B fusion in his music is super accessible and easy to listen to in pretty much any situation. His most recent project, Silver Lining, shows huge strides from the one before, and give a much more clear picture as to what AyEl is capable of. Kansas City seems to have a bustling rap scene, and it wouldn't surprise me if this is the year someone breaks through – and it wouldn't surprise me if that someone is AyEl either.

Who: SilaS
SoundCloud
Age: 29
Location: Jackson, Mississippi
Recent Projects: The Day I Died (2016)

Songs to Check Out:

Another state you wouldn't really expect a big rap scene to be flourishing but sure enough the south just continues to produce talent. Coming out of Jackson is SilaS, also known as Trey Parker or Silas Stapleton. Currently traveling around on his Gullah Gullah Island Tour, SilaS is starting to reach bigger levels of exposure, and I understand. He's filling a void left by Childish Gambino created as he's transitioned through being an artist.

I think the Bino comparison is probably one of the closer artist comparisons on this list. Both in the sound of his voice, the beats they choose, and the content of their songs, SilaS is a pretty easy fit for that hole left over. I don't see much loss in quality either, with SilaS having been making music for 10 or more years at this point, he knows how to create a great piece of music. I think this is more clear in his most recent project and less so in his loosies. He has done a number of freestyles, which can be seen in his SoundCloud and Youtube, but I think as a whole his project was much more cohesive, consistent, and high quality than the rest of his portfolio. I can understand why he's so big on doing freestyles, but he's at his best when he's the first one on a beat.

Generally keeping honest music and positive vibes in his songs, SilaS is another artist who's songs can greatly improve a mood – don't fit him into the D.R.A.M. mold though. SilaS is more than capable of creating some slappers, "Gullah Gullah Island" and "The Wiz" can attest to that. He may not have a huge variety but he fills his lane really well, essentially being the 6th man small forward of hip hop. He's not an LBJ, he's probably not going to make you lose your mind around every corner, but he'll surprise you and give you the listening experience you'd expect from him. GGI put him in a good position to follow it up with something big, and if he does, you can expect to see his name again soon.

Who: Denham
SoundCloud
Age:
Location: Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Recent Projects: Streetlight (2016)

Songs to Check Out:

First things first, there's a surprising amount of people in SD trying to make it as a rapper. For a state of like 30 people you wouldn't believe how many events they have and how many people actually go to them. That being said, the man of the hours from South Dakota is Denham. On top of bringing back Mr. T's hairstyle, the man also plays multiple instruments, so expect to see heavy bass guitar influence in his music and a lot of jazz/funk sounds to it.

I'll be upfront with you guys, I think Denham has a lot of potential, but for right now he struggles a lot with stringing together a full good song. I think a lot of it has to do with the talent around him however, I've liked a few songs he's made a lot until a feature came on and said some of the worst shit I ever heard in my life (see "Face Drop" as an example of the worst shit I ever heard in my life, credit to Ape$hit). While, yeah, that's on the artist to have the discretion to not let that mouth garbage onto his song, he gets a pass since there's only so many byways in South Dakota to get exposure. Denham isn't immune to a case of buns bars but he's definitely one of the most lyrically consistent in the area.

This all being said, Denham really does have potential. I think it's seen best in his most recent song "It's Just Somethin'", where he shows off his ability to spit over a great jazzy beat, and "Dreamstate" shows that he can work well with features over simpler beats too. His use of electric and bass guitars is awesome too and something you don't see implemented well a ton in rap, and I like it a lot when he does it. He tries a lot of new things and honestly looks like he's on his way to a Sincerely Collins type role or ability in the game. He's hungry, and sometimes that shows through a little too much, but sometimes it pushes him to create some great music. I think he still has some areas to grow in, and I think a lot of the reason it takes a little bit longer for him to develop is due to the lack of critics or mass population into the scene in the area letting him know what's good.

Like I said, I don't see Denham blowing up in the next year, but I would be lying if I said the man was useless or something. He's not even touching the worst on this list at all which is surprising given the state he's coming from. He's one of the artists I'm going to be continuing to check into just to see what he can do, because I think he can develop into something really special.

Who: Lil Swurvie (DaKidQuence) SoundCloud
Age: 24
Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Recent Projects: N/A

Songs to Check Out:

Y'all know by name alone that this another one of those artists where you should read this write up with a permanent sigh. This one is for the fans of the new gen artists or whatever, people like Lil Uzi and similar people. That's not really my lane so I'm not wild on this guy but my roommate fucked with this guy so I'm sticking true to my word of pushing something out there for everyone.

So first things first this man's worst trait is his lyricism and also the shit he has 12 year olds doing. Yo to be fair though, watching that video I sort of got a little hype so I really see where the fun is in this dude's music. Son raps over some nice at beats and his delivery is exciting and ignant so I see where his fanbase is coming from for sure. That being said, this man's music is only used for specific times, this isn't that casual listening, let me vibe and impress this bitch music. This is music for pregames or parties and it really does rule that zone for the most part. I think Swurvie is going to be one of those Roscoe Da$h types that nobody but the die hard fans are really crawling through sons discography but their hits are a pretty easy pick for turning up.

Now that I've had time to listen to his music a little more, I fuck with him as an artist. Not that I super fuck with his music but he hasn't released a project or anything and is pretty consistent in what he's trying to do with his music. Despite his hair, he's not trying to preach to y'all about folding laundry or shit like that, he wants to rap about getting fucked up for you to get fucked up to. I appreciate that. He's not wasting y'alls time with anything, and his songs have some good ass production for this.

I changed my mind on this man. Lil Swurvie still not really my type but I honest to god might toss some of this shit on my party rotation. I can see why he's one of the biggest names in WV right now alongside Dreadhead Ced, and I wouldn't be surprised if he catches a feature from someone a little bigger than him in the next year or two. Son just wants to teach the whole world how to swurve.

Who: Y-O
SoundCloud Age:
Location: Cheyenne, Wyoming
Recent Projects: Fear And Loathing In Wyoming (2015)

Songs to Check Out:

Finally a rapper with the nice word play in an artist's name, Y-O(ming) is the man to watch from Wyoming and arguably the biggest rapper currently repping the state. I was going to do Abstract for this, but I saw he had been opening up for Chris Webby, who y'all know I got a crusade against, so I figured I'd go with Y-O – he couldn't be a better representation of the state if he tried.

Y'all can take that last sentence as you may, his style is pretty reminiscient of what everyone listened to in high school back in 2008, so a little behind the curve but definitely listenable. Y-O is another artist who has some great production and a really engaging delivery, especially in "Hometown Pt. 2". He's pretty vocal about repping his state and you'll hear WY get shout outs in the majority of songs. Also, now that I'm listening to him, I'm realizing his overall delivery is pretty similar to Dr. Dre but with a higher pitched voice and a little bit more raw. It definitely will sound familiar and you can tell he was influenced by an older generation in rap.

Like many inexperienced artists on the list, Y-O seems to struggle a bit with flow, and occasionally loses the flow or will try to force too many words into a line. He also falls into a rough spot where – and I mean no offense to my guy here – he raps about a ton of shit nobody cares about. I think some of his better songs (Hometown pt. 2, Warning, etc.) he does a good job of avoiding these pitfalls for the most part, and he is going to have to continue to work to avoiding these moving forwards.

Y-O has already made it in his state, and is probably one of the biggest if not the biggest local name. I think he'll need to continue to develop his sound if he hopes to reach higher heights, but he just had a song with Afroman so I don't really know what the fuck is going on anymore.

Hope y'all enjoy it familia, only got 2 more left (praise god).

Also, I finished transcribing my interview with deM atlaS. Sorry I didn't have it ready for last week, but he was a real well spoken guy and I recommend checking it out.
