Background

Juicy J

From Memphis Tennessee, Jordan Michael Houston or Juicy J has had a storied career. In 1991 along with DJ Paul and Lord Infamous, Juicy J co-founded the group Backyard Posse that would eventually become Three 6 Mafia. The group would see the original members along with Koopsta Knicca, Gangsta Boo, and Crunchy Black come and go from the group. They created their own record label "Prophet Entertainment" and released multiple projects through it, including their first two albums "Music Stylez" and "Chapter 1: The End".

With Juicy J's help, Three 6 Mafia became a household name with multiple platinum and gold albums, academy awards, and plenty of high charting singles. The group helped Southern hip-hop rise to prominence in a time where hip-hop was dominated by the East and West coasts.

During his time with Three 6 Mafia, Juicy released two solo albums "Chronicles of the Juice Man" and "Hustle Till I Die". In 2011 Juicy parted from Three 6 and became a member and part time owner of Wiz Khalifa's "Taylor Gang". A year later he released the first single from his third solo album "Bandz A Make Her Dance". This single is by far Juicy's most popular solo track to date and it generated significant hype for his album "Stay Trippy" which was released in 2013 and charted at 4 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums.

Wiz Khalifa

Hailing from Pittsburgh, Cameron Thomaz better known as Wiz Khalifa began his meteoric rise to fame in 2004 when he was only 16 years old. After the president of Rostrum Records heard some of Wiz's music he immediately decided he wanted to work with him and knew that he was 'a diamond in the rough'. After his first full-length album entitled Show and Prove in 2006. Khalifa was declared an "artist to watch" that year in Rolling Stone magazine

In 2007, Khalifa signed to Warner Bros. Records and released two mixtapes through Rostrum Records: "Grow Season", and "Prince of the City 2". His debut Warner Bros. single "Say Yeah" reached number 25 on the Billboard Rhythmic Top 40 music chart and number 20 on Billboard's Hot Rap Tracks.

Khalifa parted ways with Warner Bros. Records in July 2009 after numerous delays in releasing his planned debut album for the label, First Flight. Khalifa stated to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that, "I learned a lot during my time there and matured as an artist during the process. I'm happy to be moving on with all of my material and having the chance to be in control of my next moves". In 2009, Wiz announced that his relationship with Warner Bros. was over.

Wiz's following mixtape, "Kush & Orange Juice" received enough press that Atlantic Records took notice, signing him that same month, and in September, his first single for the label, "Black and Yellow," appeared. As the Pittsburgh Steelers progressed toward the playoffs, Khalifa's track became their unofficial anthem.

Since then Wiz has released multiple projects, none exactly living up to Kush and OJ. He has worked on various movie soundtracks including "Fast 7", "TMNT", and "Suicide Squad". He has also created his own strain of marijuana "Khalifa Kush".

TM88

Floridian producer TM88 (aka Trackman) is one of the lead members of the production and writing team "808 Mafia". TM88 joined 808 Mafia in 2012 and got his first major placement on Waka Flocka Flame's "Lurking" from his album "Triple F Life". In 2013 TM88's career took off as he worked with huge names such as Gucci Mane and Future. To date he has produced for artists such as Young Thug, Migos, French Montana, Travis Scott, Drake, and 2 Chainz.

Review

All three artists had very busy 2016's. Juicy J put out his mixtape #MUSTBENICE along with a plethora of quality features for the likes of Rae Sremmurd, A$AP Mob, Robin Thicke and more. Wiz Khalifa released his album Khalifa and worked on the soundtrack for Suicide Squad, creating the smash hit "Sucker For Pain". TM88 produced for 28 albums in 2016 which definitely kept him occupied. "The Rude Awakening" is yet another quality project in all of their discographies.

Teaming up, the trio put together an album reminiscent of the classic Three 6 Mafia tapes. On this project Juicy J came right out of the gate, firing on all cylinders and sounding hungrier than he ever has. Juicy's iconic flow was another high point of this album. He effortlessly rapped over TM88's beats, adjusting seamlessly to the frequent changes in pace.

While Juicy provided consistent highlights, Wiz did not. Although he was listed as a headliner Wiz was pushed to the background on many tracks, dwelling in Juicy's shadow. This isn't to say that Wiz was bad. He came through with some solid bars, most notably on the album's lead single "All Night". Unfortunately Wiz was just unable to keep up with Juicy for most of the album.

Not to be overshadowed by Juicy's bars, TM88 came up big with his production. "The Rude Awakening" had some of the best and most unique beats of 2016. TM88 shied away from generic trap beats, instead making interesting layered beats littered with high keys, 808 drums, pulsating synths, and frequent use of samples. TM88s efforts resulted in trippy, psychedelic beats that when coupled with Juicy and Wiz vocals make the perfect tracks to get turnt to.

One of the highlights of the project was the production on "Hit Me Up". On this track TM88 starts the beat off quickly with an array of reverbing high hat drums, bells, and deep synths. TM also shows his versatility on "Where Was You" changing the pace of the beat multiple times, making it go from an intense quick paced beat to something slower, allowing Juicy and Wiz to showcase their versatility.

A standout track from the album was it's lead single and party anthem "All Night". Rapping over a murky trap beat layered with high hat drums and fast paced synths, Juicy J delivers a strong verse about his drug use, and how a regular night for him is a night of pill popping, weed smoking, lean drinking, and sex. You have to wonder how Juicy is able to live like this at 41 and how long he can keep going at this rate. On this track Wiz delivers one of his strongest verses on the album, quickly spitting lines about his lavish lifestyle and desires.

Another standout track on this album has to be "Da Power". On this track Juicy J immediately opens the track sounding like he's ready to go to war. He uses his aggressive flow to rap braggadociously about his lifestyle, making thinly veiled threats about how he will do anything to keep living that lifestyle. Wiz spits a short verse his own lifestyle before giving the reigns back to Juicy J who continues to body this track. TM88's production is a huge part of why this track is so good, the looping synths and 808 drums give an aggressive and intense feel to this track.

Favourite lyrics

Pushing all these chickens tryna get a ticket

I might leave a trail cause my swag drippin'

All this shit you talking bout you know I live it

I'm LeBron with the vision, nigga you a witness

This Jordan on my chain bigger than a midget

My back wood like a back, gotta roll it off a flat

She started off on her knees she gonna end up on her back

She mixing the xan with the purp

Noddin' off look like she breaking her neck

I gotta treat that ass like a lateral she steady throwing it back

You got that xan and lean she gon' fuck you on sight

When she wake up from her Imma give her all pipe

And that pussy ain't that good that shit was just alright

Had to call my homie and tell him that it just all hype

And that bitches gave me dome and it took all night

And that sloppy ain't toppy she didn't hold the balls right

She just wanna do drugs and smoke my weed up all night

So I kicked that bitch out and told her bust a hard right

Nigga fund start runnin' low you know how they do

They never wanna blame they self they blame it all on you

I handle my business, I can't handle yours too

They can't talk me out my fuckin' money now they wanna sue

Nigga get off yo ass you can't walk in my shoes

Ran up on'em now the homies like

Don't die kane, mane

My new car insane

I'm in the ghost, getting ghost

Out here switching lanes

And if a nigga act tough

Then my niggas spray

They don't care they hitting everything that's in the way

Taylor Gang

You need money for these whores, you need money for these wars

You ain't getting money then you ain't a man, you a boy

Spent 100 on my toys, spent 100 on my tour

I just cashed out on a 100, bout to make 100 more

Want no problems with a G, nigga I fuck yo bitch for free

Got her busting wide open, got her rolling up my weed

Brought her best friend in, got 2 bitches all on me

Then get back to the Backwoods stuffed with plenty of OG

Discussion Points

1) What are your thoughts on the sole feature being Project Pat? Do you think the album would have benefited from more featured artists?

2) Juicy J is 41 years old. Do you think he can continue to put out high quality work or will he begin to drop off?

3) Where would you like to see Juicy/Wiz/TM88 go from here?

4) Would the album have benefitted from more variation in it's production?

5) What do you think are the strongest and weakest aspects of the album?

Houston's classic hip-hop station Boom 92 becomes a generic pop station. Pour out some liquor.

Houston's classic hip-hop station, Boom 92.1 FM, has changed formats to be a generic pop station. This sucks because our local radio stations have always been good about playing hip-hop from Houston. Our classic hip-hop station played a ton of classic hip-hop from Fat Pat, Lil Keke, DJ Screw, UGK, etc. Obviously there's satellite radio and Spotify, but local radio is huge to represent for local musicians. Plus, a lot of broke people who can't afford Sirius can tune in to FM radio for free.

The other great thing about Boom is they played a lot of tracks that were never released as singles: 2Pac's "Ambitionz Az a Ridah", Biggie's "Unbelievable", etc.

Pour out a lil liquor for real hip-hop.
