IF YOU DON'T KNOW, NOW YOU KNOW 2016 - My 2nd annual list of rising stars and little known gems you should be listening to!

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 01:32 PM PST

Hey guys! If you recall, I stopped by last fall with a long set of listening recommendations I titled "If You Don't Know, Now You Know". The response was way larger than I ever could have expected and so awesome.

It's been a fun year with y'all since. We've seen tons of great music released. I launched the subreddit /r/OctobersVeryOwn in January with the help of a few individuals I met on here. And this community has been a nice refuge from the frequent insanity that has been 2016.

Many people have contacted me following that post about if I would be continuing posting recommendations. While I had intended it as a one-off, as I've continued to discover more great talent over the course of the last year, I came around to the idea of making a follow-up post. So here I am! (I'd intended to do it on the one-year anniversary of the original post but my life has been in complete chaos lately so this has been delayed a few times. But December feels like a more appropriate time anyway, right?)

Rather than the level-of-notoriety organizing method I used last time, my list of artists this year felt more suited to be grouped into 3 simpler groups: Hip-Hop, R&B, & OVO-Vibe. Obviously there's some cross-over between groups, but this felt best for the list I have this year. I've loosely organized my favorite picks further towards the top of each group. Music video links are indicated with "(mv)" but all other links are to Soundcloud.

Hope you find at least a few new favorites that you were previously unfamiliar with!

HIP-HOP:

  • Saba - A lot of you may already know Saba (he gets a good amount of attention on here) but if you haven't gotten around to listening to his music, or more specifically his recent Bucket List Project, DO IT NOW. I'd caught some of his older work and a few recent features showed potential, but the Chicago-based rapper completely surprised and won me over with this 2016 release. It's not his first project, but truly feels like a debut of form - Saba presents himself at his full potential - and it results in a fantastic project. Bucket List is packed full of great bars throughout, Saba is incredibly charismatic in the way he uses his voice, and the numerous features never distract from Saba himself. The three-song run of "Church/Liquor Store (feat. Noname)", "Westside Bound 3" & "MOST" is a great place to start for new listeners, but the whole project is a must-listen of the year. Letting the music speak for itself, Saba has proven he has great things ahead.

  • Vic Mensa - Vic has been on my radar for awhile, beginning with his time in the wonderful group Kids These Days. After the band broke up, his forays into solo music were hit-or-miss for me, with loosies dabbling in a variety of sounds and never quite living up to the compelling storytelling of his best Kids These Days verses. With his mixtape There's Alot Going On he silences any doubts about his potential and proves worthy of his signing to Jay-Z's Roc Nation. Catchy bangers mingle with political statements and moments of introspection. "Danger" is my personal banger-of-the-year and unlike some rappers who let the beat do more of the talking than the lyrics on a banger, Vic wastes not a moment, filling it to the brim with great bars. The title track is another highlight from the project, a very personal reflection on the missteps in Vic's path to fame. If you haven't heard this project, it's another must-listen from a true rising star. Recently released "Heathens Freestyle" proves he has no intention of slowing down. A star's been born in 2016. Can't wait to see what he does in '17.

  • Dumbfoundead - Dumb has been around for awhile, but mostly had a more niche following. With We Might Die, his first project in three years, he has really found his footing and makes a strong case for greater recognition in the hip-hop scene. After dabbling in varying degrees of trap production on past singles over the last few years, Dumbfoundead has finally found a "sound" that is fairly unique and is cohesive among the entire project. As the title suggests, Dumb brings timely political sentiments to the project and puts his perspective as a Korean-American to use well. "We Might Die", "Harambe" (a clever twist on the gorilla-turned meme as an analogy for race relations) and "Murals" (mv) are good tracks to start with if you're unfamiliar.

  • Allan Kingdom - I first discovered this Minnesota-based rapper via his collaborations with Spooky Black. His project Northern Lights was released at the very beginning of 2016 and has remained one of the year's most unique and under-recognized projects. Both the production and Allan's vocals are creative and unconventional, coming together to form a wholly-realized project (another "debut of form" if you will). "The Ride" (mv) and "Monkey See" are highlights and good entry-points, but the project contains a nice DRAM feature and lots of variety (such as the croon-y "I Feel Ya"), so give the whole thing a listen.

  • Jayaire Woods - I first discovered this recently CQ-signed artist via his fun collab with Lil' Yachty "Man of the Year", but diving into his music more has proved Jayaire to be a far more unique and creative artist than Yachty. This Chicago-born rapper has a melodic, strained vocal style that he uses very adeptly with mostly introspective lyrics that are more compelling than many other "melodic rappers". There's hints of Cudi, DRAM, Tiller and others mixed into his delivery but his voice shines uniquely over production that mixes classic hip hop instrumentation with trap and more experimental stylings. His late-2015 released debut trees42morrow was one of my favorite surprise discoveries earlier this year and his follow-up tape FREETHEFALL, released this summer, sees him experimenting more with different vocal styles. Three personal favorite tracks to check out first would be "out on a limb", "onnaway" & "2DAY", and if you like what you hear continue to "5:40AM" & "Roster", though all of trees42morrow is a must-listen. His recent loosie "Feel" sees him celebrating the year-anniversary of his debut project while rapping more traditionally with some solid bars. With the right career decisions and dedication to continuing to develop as an artist, Jayaire could be very big come this time next year. Don't sleep.

  • Kevin Abstract - I struggle to even categorize rising star Kevin Abstract's new album American Boyfriend - it scatters hip hop elements among Frank Ocean-y nostalgia-drenched R&B and alternative rock influences. But it's one of the year's most unique listens and worth giving a shot to if you haven't heard it. Start with album opener "Empty" (mv) and jump straight into the album from there if you wanna hear more.

  • AminĂ© - This Portland-based rapper has had a great 2016. He was signed early in the year, had a breakout summer hit with the unique, catchy "Caroline" (mv), and recently performed it on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. If you haven't heard that song be sure to check it out, but don't sleep on his memorable project Calling Brio - it features production from Kaytranada and has bouncy, electronic-infused production throughout. With the Tonight Show performance grabbing attention for its additional verse addressing the Trump presidency, and his profile growing steadily, AminĂ© is definitely a rising star to keep your eye on.

  • Shaqisdope - Another great young talent from Toronto, Shaqisdope has put out a consistent stream of great hip-hop this year and has been beginning to receive much deserved attention. Between his mixtape Black Frames and numerous loosies, there's lots of bars to appreciate here. Mixtape stand-out "Wraith Dreams" and recent single "Owe Me" are great starting points. Keep out for a new self-titled EP coming soon as well.

  • Little Simz - A last minute addition to this list, I had heard Simz's name for a minute but only just got around to listening after seeing an article about the UK rapper's recently-released second LP, the wonderfully-titled Stillness in Wonderland. While I yet to feel like I have a full grip on the project, I can tell she's created something special and felt the need to include it. The final 3 tracks have been the personal stand-outs for me so far, so I'll include them here: "Poison Ivy", "Low Tides" & "No More Wonderland".

  • Derin Falana - This Canadian rapper was a great surprise when I happened upon his 2016 release Live From Rocky Mountain. Always great when you stumble upon an artist with such natural and confident delivery and flow as Derin has this early in their career. Check out "The Pick Up" & "12 AM" to start.

  • A.Dd+ - This Dallas-based rap duo isn't new in 2016, in fact they broke up in January. But only discovering them recently, my first reaction was "how can you spit like that and not be better known?" Perhaps some of you know of the duo, but for a group active since 2009, I'd never heard their name once and I suspect many of you haven't either. There's clear Outkast influence, as well as other southern stylings. I'd start with "Drive Safely", "Can't Come Down" & "Suitcase", and if you like what you hear check out their projects DiveHiFlyLo and NAWF.

  • Swet Shop Boys - This duo, who just released their debut LP Cashmere, consists of Heems (of Das Racist) and Riz MC (a British rapper better known for his acting roles in The Night Of, Nightcrawler, & Rogue One). Their respective styles play nicely off one another, Riz's sharp Grime-y flow and Heem's incredibly laid back style contrasting each other, while their shared experiences as children of Muslim immigrants create a common ground they use to address political topics on many tracks. Peek single "T5" (mv) before diving into the full project.

  • KAMI - This upcoming rapper is part of Chicago's Save Money collective and perhaps best known so far for his duo with Joey Purp. But single Foundation is a must-listen, and indicates the solo album KAMI is prepping is definitely a project to watch out for in early 2017. Most recent single "Right Now" feat. Vic Mensa is another promising track.

  • Junglepussy - This New York rapper dropped her second project Pregnant with Success at the end of last year, so she barely missed last year's list. But I'm glad we're finally here again, because she's a unique and entertaining talent I'm happy to recommend. She has a confident and at times abrasive delivery style, delivering blunt and clever lyrics over casually funky beats. Pregnant With Success tracks "Spicy 103 FM" & "Nothing For Me" are good introductory tracks, but the project is quite varied so be sure to check out the full thing. And be sure not to miss "Pop For You", a partially-spoken and kinda funny track calling out past men on their BS. Going into this year I was hoping to find more talented female artists, as there's definitely a great gender imbalance in Hip Hop & R&B, and Junglepussy was an excellent find to start the year with. She's got lots of potential ahead of her.

  • TOBi - Canada continues to produce great new hip-hop talent as of late, with TOBi hailing from Ontario. I momentarily considered grouping him in the OVO Vibe section due to some of his melodic vocal stylings, but his production choices and general vibe is just far too unique to be categorized like that. His FYi EP is among the most original projects on this list, with a bouncy groove permeating its excellent 7 tracks. Get acquainted with tracks "FYi", "Don't Wanna Think", & recent loosie "Libra". Seriously excited to see what he does next.

  • Dante Thomas - This Portland-based rapper deserves far more attention than he currently has, with solid rhymes and confident delivery over instrumental-inclined production. His EP Grayscale, released this summer, serves as a promising collection of tracks that sees Dante putting his talent to use and beginning to find his voice. "Fade to Grey" & "Ocean" are favorites that serve as a good introduction. Watch this one.

  • Masego - A producer/rapper making some very jazzy hip hop. Some of the beats alone make his stuff a worthwhile listen. Fans of Goldlink might be familiar with Masego from their collaboration. Check out stand-out tracks "I'm In Hollywood" and "Girls That Dance" featuring frequent collaborator Medasin. Some of his stuff still feels a bit creatively scattered but there's tons of potential here.

  • Chip (aka Chipmunk) - A very solid Grime artist I think could find more fans here on HHH, Chip has seen some mainstream-y hits including a Chris Brown collab, but is at his best spitting hard bars on songs like "Hear Dis (feat Stormzy)" (mv), "Can't Run Out of Bars" and my personal favorite, "Bookey". The last year or two has also seen some interesting beefs involving Chip that I recommend looking up if you're into that.

  • FKi 1st - One half of the Atlanta production duo FKI, 1st's debut EP dropped this spring and is quite interesting, dabbling in numerous styles. "For What It's Worth" is the stand out for me, but the EP also features Post Malone & Bankroll Fresh among others.

  • Dread. - I know little about this rapper hailing from Atlanta, but "On Demand" & "Yet Again" demonstrate a lot of potential.

  • Rap Honorable Mentions: Dyme-a-duzin ("Slept On Freestyle", "That Chicken (Remix)"); Double 0H! ("Descent Into Darkness", "Crying Statues"); Trapo (Shade Trees); Kelechi ("Play with my hair"; Cardo Antonnio ("Nobody"); Denmark Vessey ("Chemtrails"); Half-A-Mil (Half-A-Mil EP); Croosh ("Tell Me", "Healthy"); KP CANNONS ("You Can Do It"); Omari Shakir ("Reminisce")

R&B:

  • Jamila Woods - An R&B singer from Chicago, Jamila was only mildly on my radar as the female vocalist on "Sunday Candy" until she released her debut project HEAVN. It's one of my favorite R&B releases of the year and a stellar debut. Jamila has a calm but charismatic singing style which is accompanied by great production. The music has a lightness about it even as it explores heavy subject matter, with topical lyrics that often address the multifaceted experience of being a black woman in America. Fans of Noname's tape will definitely find musical similarities to enjoy (as well as a great Noname feature) but I recommend it highly to all fans of R&B. The first two tracks, "Bubbles" & "VRY BLK" ft. Noname, are a great introduction.

  • dvsn - Most of you probably already know this R&B duo signed to Drake's OVO Sound by now, but if you haven't given their debut album Sept. 5th a listen, it's one of the year's best. I also wanna bring attention to this fantastic song "Dear Summer Sixteen"they debuted on OVO Sound Radio but went virtually unnoticed because they never officially released it.

  • AmbrĂ© - Another singer I'm so happy I stumbled upon this year is AmbrĂ©. She's apparently a friend/collaborator of Kehlani's, but tbh I've been feeling Ambre's stuff a lot more this year. Her music is laid-back and woozy, but her vocals have gentle power that bubbles up occasionally. Fans of The Internet will probably find some similarities to enjoy, but Ambre definitely has her own voice. Her tape 2090s has gone severely under-recognized this year, so give it a listen. "Yours Truly", "She Ain't Me" & "Cadillac Interlude" are three personal faves I think serve as a good introduction to her music.

  • abhi//dijon - The smooth vocals and live instrumental-infused beats of this R&B duo are infectious. Dvsn fans in particular will find something to love here. Their 2015 project Stay Up (no longer on Soundcloud in full) and recent EP Montana are both fantastic and worth multiple listens. "jon b" & "Ignore" will give you an idea of their vibe.

  • Lizzo - Of all places to discover a new artist, I found Lizzo performing on Samantha Bee's show. She makes fun, positive R&B music that'll be stuck in your head all day. "Good As Hell" (mv) and "Coconut Oil" (with the great titular line "I thought I needed to run and find somebody to love, but all I needed was some Coconut Oil") are my personal faves and must-listens.

  • Daniel Caesar - This up & coming young Toronto-based R&B singer mixes soul crooning with the gentle emotion of Frank Ocean. While his two projects to date haven't felt quite like they lived up to his full potential, his songs "Death & Taxes", "Get You" & "Japanese Denim" are simply heavenly must-listens and he has a new project on the way you better keep an eye on.

  • Blood Orange - R&B singer Dev Hynes has seen increased exposure this year with release of his third album Freetown Sound. Simultaneously feeling like some long lost gem from the 80s and peculiarly forward-thinking, it's a very unique album, utilizing numerous stylistic elements from electronic to baroque as well as multiple vocalists (with Dev frequently taking a back seat to others for an entire track). It took me a two or three listens to really get into it as its nuances unravel, but is a worthwhile listening experience. "Best To You" (with lead vocals sung by Empress Of) is my personal favorite which I think, along with singles "Better Than Me" (mv) & "I Know" (mv), will serve as a good introduction to the project. The videos for both those singles are just as unique and strangely entrancing as the album itself.

  • Todd Zach Jr. - This is another one of those artists I happen upon who clearly deserves far more people listening. Great, smooth R&B with upbeat melodies and a pinch of funkiness. "thekid." is a highlight that serves as a nice place to start, but his entire betterwithyou project from this past April is worth the full listen.

  • Brent Faiyaz - Raw, sultry vocals over stripped down instrumentation characterize this promising crooner's stellar debut A.M. Paradox. It's only five tracks long, so just dive straight into it, although alt-rock-infused "Invite Me" is a stand-out. I promise you won't be disappointed.

  • bLAck pARty - A Childish Gambino affiliate, this Arkansas-based singer crafted a funky, low-key and thoughtful R&B debut in Mango. His voice is smooth with gentle crackles and conveys emotion well. Frank fans will likely enjoy. Start with "Best View" & "Bloom".

  • theMIND - Similar to bLAck pARty, theMIND released a great debut project (Summer Camp) that got some attention here on HHH but deserves a lot more. Yet another talented young artist from Chicago, this singer's project combines dreamy, smooth vocals with eclectic, compelling production. See "Summer Camp" & "Come Home" to get a taste.

  • DRAMA (aka Drama Duo) - This producer/singer-songwriter R&B duo hails from Chicago and just dropped their excellent debut project. GALLOWS pairs primarily uptempo, electronic-infused production with soulful, nuanced vocals. "Forever's Gone" & "Barely Friends" are representative of the project, which is a real treat from start to finish.

  • Gallant - Ology, Gallant's debut album released earlier this year, deserves more attention for its shining, soulful energy led by Gallant's powerful voice. Start with souring lead single "Weight In Gold" as well as my personal highlight, the more understated "Miyazaki", before diving into the whole project.

  • Tone Stith - First catching my eye with the funky, souring "TIFU (Til I Find You)", Tone hasn't released a formal project yet but has provided a steady output this year of catchy tracks featuring his smooth falsetto and throwback vibes. Also see "Ooh Ahh (Thru The Door)" and "Rainy Days".

  • Charlotte Day Wilson - A very promising and talented female vocalist from the Toronto area making soulful, haunting R&B. See "Work" & "Find You" off her debut CDW EP.

  • Tiffany GouchĂ© - "Red Rum Melody" alone immediately sold me on this singer's exceptionally smooth and sultry brand of R&B. "Fantasy" is a jazz-infused track also worth checking out along with the unique a capella beat of "Ready 2 Go". If you like her sound, be sure to listen to her entire Pillow Talk EP on bandcamp, released last December.

  • JAHKOY - This Toronto-based singer makes R&B far sunnier than typical Toronto fare, with a wistful undercurrent. His recent project Foreign Water, his first since signing to Def Jam, definitively lives up to the potential of his previous loosies. Be sure to check out "No Regrets" & "1000 Times".

  • Khalid - Texas-based singer Khalid's bouncy, calm single "Location" has risen to 5M plays on soundcloud over the course of 2016, and with good reason. It's a memorable introduction to the talented artist who is showing great potential to drop a real gem of a debut project in 2017. Also see "Reasons".

  • Kacy Hill - This GOOD Music-signed crooner doesn't get enough attention for her experimental, gorgeous R&B. "Experience" is a highlight off of her excellent EP Bloo. Eagerly awaiting a full-length.

  • Aaron Taylor - Releasing his debut EP early this year and following it with a second EP this fall, this crooner from London makes soulful, funky R&B that is unique among this list. Start with "Lesson Learnt".

  • R&B Honorable Mentions: Allan Rayman ("Faust Road"); Jerry Good ("It is what it is", "Right Now (Boy Genius remix)"); Vinsint ("Bijoux", "January Blues"); Preston Harris (Love Crazy EP); Joel Lobban ("Reload")

OVO VIBE:

  • K. Forest - This dude was first on my radar around the time I compiled my last list, but I wasn't totally confident in what I'd heard so far. His second project, Forest Fire, released at the beginning of the year, made me a believer. There's definite PND comparisons in only good ways. "OMM" is a stand out and still among my favorite songs this year. "What It Do" is another highlight. Definitely an up & coming talent to keep an eye on.

  • TRIPSIXX - This Toronto-based rapper leans a bit more into the trap side of the OVO Vibe but keeps woozy synths underlying most of his stuff. His debut EP We Own The Night was released in January. "Savage Shit" (mv) is a catchy as shit would-be hit & "Team Rocket" is another highlight.

  • HER - With HER Vol. 1, this mysterious female singer has caught attention for her mix of more traditional R&B vocals with OVO-influenced late-night vibes. Peek "Losing" & "Focus".

  • River Tiber - This Toronto-based crooner/producer released his debut album Indigo earlier this year, which flew too far under the radar. Featuring laid back vocals as well as a solid falsetto, he has collaborated with Jazz Cartier, Pusha T, Daniel Caesar & more. Start with "No Talk", "Gravity", & "Barcelona".

  • 24hrs - With an undoubtedly Atlanta sound that intermingles with the late night vibes of OVO, this mysterious artist has had a great year. He's released 2 EPs, Open and 12:AM, worked with Ty $, Roy Woods & Murda Beats, been featured on OVO Sound Radio, and racked up a huge increase in soundcloud plays. "Back for Me", "WAVE", & "Gucci Flame/12am in the 6" are nice tracks to start on, but both EPs are solid all the way through.

  • Elhae - I was very pleased to discover Atlanta singer Elhae right around the time he his album All Have Fallen and signed a deal early this Spring. His production leans towards the PND side of OVO, with hard bass hits and trap influences mixed with experimental touches, but sings with a gentler edge more reminiscent of the slightly throwback croon of dvsn's Daniel Daley. Check out "Needs" & "Comfortable" to start. Dude also has rap chops, as he shows off on tracks like "Hartley Bridge" & loosie "4 Days".

  • THEY. - This LA-based duo has been combining rollicking alt-R&B tendencies (and even alt-rock moments) with darker OVO-ish atmosphere to create incredibly unique music. With some of their tracks seeing increasing attention over the year, thanks in part to repeated play on Beats One, they're an act to keep a strong eye on in 2017. "Bad Habits" (which has remained among my favorite songs all year), "Back It Up", & "Say When" are all must-listens.

  • Eli Sostre - Fans of PND will find a lot to love here, but on his very solid EP Still Up All Night Eli deftly creates comparable vibes while letting his voice - a bit higher and gentler than Party's - set him apart. Solid lyricism and production additionally make the entire project very consistent from start to finish, but "Pick It Up", "Still Up All Night" & "Ain't Love Strange" are nice tracks to start with.

  • Shawn Harris - This promising Minnesotan rapper (fka Nikko Lafre) incorporates varying degrees of the OVO Vibe into his woozy, catchy music. "Dear Dashima" was one of my favorite tracks at the tail end of 2015, "Dance" is a catchy track that deserves to be a far bigger hit, and "That Feelin" rounds out my favorites. Hopefully 2017 will see a full project from Shawn that builds on the promise of these best loosies from the last year.

  • Travie - This Brampton-based singer has a unique take on the OVO style, and features excellent production from primary Ramriddlz collaborator Jaegen. "RIDE" & "Welcome to Nebulous" are must-listens. Be sure to keep an eye out for Travie's debut project in 2017.

  • 6LACK - There's a fairly good chance you've heard the breakout hit "PRBLMS", and while 6LACK's debut project FREE 6LACK is pretty straightforward OVO Vibe material, it's very well executed and worth a listen for any fan of this style. "Never Know" is another stand out and loosie "Just in time 4 the weekend" goes over a classic The Weeknd beat and is actually among my fave 6LACK tracks.

  • J-SOUL - Another Toronto-based act that deserves your attention, J-SOUL won me over with his project [November Twelve]() at the beginning of the year and has followed it up with an EP and consistent stream of loosies. Stylistic comparisons to Roy Woods are fair. He can do both smooth night-drive vibes as well as harder tracks that bang. Check out "Ride For Me", "Toronto Plaza Hotel" & "Slow Wine" as an intro to this great artist.

  • TYuS - If you've heard this singer from Portland, Oregon before, chances are it was when someone on the internet decided to take a handful of his tracks, pitch them down and pass them off as a "leaked" PARTYNEXTDOOR EP. But the fact that many believed the music to be real PND serves as a testament to TYuS's talent. Two years later, he is recently signed and just released a real EP of his own, Never Forget. "Stay" is a nice introduction to TYuS, but give the whole EP a listen, as well as older loosies such as "City of the Rose". Also see this article to learn a bit more about the fake leak and where he's at now.

  • Luu Breeze - I had this dude in the honorable mentions until the very last minute, when I re-listened to his stuff and realized there's no way he doesn't deserve a legit spot. "Found A Way" is sooo damn hot - it'll be stuck in your head all day (in a good way). Beyond that this Toronto artist has lots of other solid tracks like "Lost".

  • Yo Trane - The smooth Late Night Drive EP from this French crooner is perfect for its titular activity. The title track which opens the EP is an excellent intro to Yo Trane's sound.

  • Gray - I first discovered Gray as not an artist but another user here on reddit, but was very pleased to stumble upon the woozy, dark vibes of his music. Following him for about a year, I still have a fondness for some earlier tracks like "I've Been Waiting For You To Unfold", but his most recent output such as personal fave "U" and "Let U Go" is his most promising, showing an artist entering a confident groove and ready to blow.

  • OVO Vibe Honourable Mentions: NO1 ("Changes"); Che Ecru ("2AM"); JUWN ("How You Feel"); blackbear ("if i could i would feel nothing", "Something Real")

(Updates since last year & other genres in the comments.)

To finish up:

Lemme know what you think of my list and feel free to share your own recommendations! I typed this entire thing in the notes app of my cracked iPhone 4S for a second year in a row, and if one person finds one new favorite artist, it's worth it to me! I mean it. Thanks for reading.

See ya round!

I Made a Twitter Bot that Instantly Tweets [FRESH] Posts -- @HHHFreshPosts

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 03:43 PM PST

TL;DR: Made a bot to instantly tweet [FRESH] posts. You can find it here: https://twitter.com/HHHFreshPosts

Hey guys,

I've spent the holiday perfecting a Reddit/Twitter bot that listens for new [FRESH] posts and automatically tweets them out in real time. In order to avoid tweeting spam/duplicate fresh posts, the bot will currently wait until the post has a score of 3 (3 more upvotes than downvotes). This has worked the best during testing, as popular posts will usually reach a score of 3 within a minute of being posted. This bot refreshes the sub in real time, so it will tweet instantly after seeing a score of 3.

I originally decided to begin developing this bot as I was looking for a solution to be instantly notified of [FRESH] posts. I'm on this subreddit most of the day, but wanted notifications for when I'm not. I've tried other alternatives such as the chrome extension that someone posted here a few months back, as well as IFTTT for iOS. Both of these were alright, but they both refreshed way too slow for my liking — I would only be notified of a post hours after it was posted. This defeated the purpose for me as I wanted an instant notification. Creating this bot and subscribing to its notifications on Twitter solved this problem for me, and I'm excited to share it with all of you.

I would love to hear any suggestions or ways to improve the bot, so please leave suggestions in the comments or DM me if you think of something I can improve on. I'm a Computer Science student but have a couple more weeks of no classes to dedicate my time to improving this bot — so let me know!

For those interested more about how I made the bot, it integrates Reddit API (PRAW) and Twitter API using Tweepy in Python. You can find more about making Reddit bots in the PRAW Documentation here, or DM me with specific questions and I may be able to help you.

Other Write-Ups:

Who: Juhovah

SoundCloud

Age: 20

Location: Columbia, South Carolina

Recent Projects: The Heartbreak (2016)

Songs to Check Out:

Juhovah is another Bryson Tiller-esque artist on this list. Sticking more to the R&B side of things than rapping, this Soda City native is working on being the next artist out of the Palmetto State after the late Speaker Knockerz. He's made his way onto local radio stations often, especially with "She Got It". He's also a true "Certified SC Homegrown" artist, often working with great local producers and artists like P.s.Juno. While he may be split between Columbia and Atlanta, he definitely gives a lot of love to the South Carolina hip-hop scene.

His influences are generally seen pretty clearly in work, and he definitely tends towards the R&B style sound. His music is generally for the girls and he's not trying to stun anyone with his bars. Not that that's a problem, since the production and sound on his music is pretty excellent. I'd compare him to people like Tory Lanez, PND, and the other singing guys in the game. A lot of reverb and hi hats on his beats, it's a familiar style and he's a great addition to the library of any fans of the bigger artists.

I read that Juhovah has only been making music for two or three years, which is crazy for someone at this point in their career. His music is already high quality, and as his resource base continues to grow from added exposure he'll continue to improve. Expect Juhovah to be seen on some big songs and to be played in some clubs near you in the next year or two, and I wouldn't be surprised if you see P.s.Juno on some big name production credits near you either.

You can read about what's it's been like to help establish the rap scene down in south carolina, as well as the process of working on creating his label, Carolina Sound, was like, in my interview with Juhovah below.

Who: Trev Rich

SoundCloud

Age: 26

Location: Denver, Colorado

Recent Projects: To Make A Long Story Short (2016)

Songs to Check Out:

Denver is called the mile high city but Trev Rich (formerly known as "Rockie") has sights set a bit further up than that. Recently signed to Cash Money records, Trev has a lot of talent surrounding him that can help him make some major moves in the next year. While Birdman is sure to fuck him up somehow in the future, he's got his first Cash Money record in the pipeline, and you can expect big things.

Trev is pretty similar to Sincerely Collins in a lot of ways, a lot of songs are about coming up or struggling, and his hunger for success is definitely present in a lot of his music. He keeps a pretty uplifting message in his music. Now I will say, if you like Trev, I wouldn't really recommend tunneling through the catacombs of his music, he's developed a lot in the last year or two, and some of his older music is filled with some wildly corny bars and a less cohesive sound. But, like I said, the man has changed, and the music you see him randomly drop on soundcloud and his most recent EP shows that he's taken a lot of positive influence from his new company. He's continued to grow as an artist and I think To Make A Long Story Short is his most cohesive project to date. He's really improved on his slower tempo songs, picked up some pop sounds, and continues to excel in the quicker songs. You'll recognize some similarities between the beats and sound of his songs to some other members of Cash Money, and it works well for him - it's a welcome change.

There's not an easy way to describe Trev's sound, as he's definitely in a rapidly changing period in his music. For those looking for a rapper to compare him too, a lot of his newer music has him sounding like The Game, but he definitely has his own style to it. 2017 could be his year, his new music shows a lot of promise and the support of Cash Money bodes well for the square stater. To Make A Long Story Short just dropped Dec 19th, so we'll see how things develop from here for the year.

Who: Kur

SoundCloud

Age: 22

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Recent Projects: Born Broke, Die Rich (2016) [with Dave East]

Songs to Check Out:

Kur is another artist who is already making an image for himself. Meek got him on Flex due to how much he talked him up, and he got featured on XXL, he even recently got signed to e-One Music, so he's doing decent right now. Oddly enough, almost all of his following is on SoundCloud, however. He only has one song on Spotify and not much in terms of youtube followers. I'm sure that will continue to change as his label works on distribution and advertising.

Kur (pronounced "Core") is by and large a drill rapper, so it goes without saying that listening to him makes you want to tuck and tell your friends to run it. He's another very consistent rapper, and he doesn't divert from this genre that much – exceptions being his "Alone Freestyle" and "Everything I wasn't" and a handful of others. While he mentions that those off genre music are the ones he really enjoys making the most, he certain excels in songs filled to the brim with threats and energetic lyrics. In that sense, he certainly embraces a lot of what makes Philly rappers popular. Meek and AR-AB have the signature yelling into the mic style with big time production and Kur is no different.

While a lot of people argue whether or not lyrics actually matter in ignorant music, that's not a conversation that needs to happen with Kur. He's pretty lyrically sound, while still pushing out great music. Some of his more R&B music is less phenomenal, and hooks definitely aren't his specialty, but it's not often he really pushes out anything worth skipping. He's starting to tone down his drill stuff into a more pop sound resembling Meek Mill's, so his discography has a good range for anyone as long as they still got hydraulics on their car.

Who: Goon Des Garcons

SoundCloud

Age: 23

Location: Little Rock, Arkansas

Recent Projects: FORTHETIMEBEING EP (2016)

Songs to Check Out:

Aw shit, another artist with a sound that I have no clue who to compare him too. GDG is out of Little Rock and gives a lot of love to his city. He just finished up touring for the year and should be releasing a new project, AINTNOWAYINHELL coming soon. If you're looking for aggressive, industrial type music over hard hitting beats, look no further, because GDG is your man. If you thought Yeezus was Kanye's best, this is for you.

Like I said, GDG makes some aggressive-ass music. Gritty, booming, industrial, whatever you want to call it, he's making a name for himself, and his crew, Young Gods of America, because of it. A lot of bass, distortion on the vocals, metal guitar, none of that is out of place in his music. Everything GDG is this way though, which means he doesn't always fit the beat like in "Ohakune Freestyle" ft. Tan the Terrible and Too'Onpoint. Fortunately, GDG still finds ways to try new things, and you'll see his older music, like "April 18th" will be different from his newer stuff off FTTB like "Dirt". To get a better idea of what I mean, check them out.

In terms of quality, the production and mixing on his songs is excellent, especially from an artist in an area without a ton of resources to reach out to. The same for his music videos, and just about everything else the man puts out. Regardless of if you fuck with it or not, he puts a ton of work in and as a result comes out with some pretty polished results.

Last thing I have to say that I really like about GDG is that he and his crew really seem to just be having a lot of fun with everything. Take a look at his insta or music videos and you'll see, the man just seems to really be enjoying what he's doing - his shows look crazy and he seems to have a smile on his face anytime behind the scenes is shown. A lot of artists trying to come up seem to be so focused on grinding that they never look like they're having fun, so I thought it was cool to see GDG really enjoying himself. Regardless of the success of ANWIH, you can bet 2017 will be another fun year for Young Gods of America.

Who: ZelooperZ

SoundCloud

Age: 21/22

Location: Detroit, Michigan

Recent Projects: Bothic (2016)

Songs to Check Out:

This one is for all you Danny Brown fans. ZelooperZ is wild, a lot of his music is in the aggressive, trippy style that Danny is so well known for. The dude is an oddity, and I feel like I can only assume he makes most of his music on either a really good or really bad trip. That being said, it's a new sound. When it works, it really works. You'll find unconventional sounds sampled, large changes in pitch of his voice, a lack of hooks, and at times, completely unintelligible lyrics. It's probably not conventional listening music, but I know some of these have already made rotations into - and gotten heavy use in - my wild out playlists (looking at you, ISBD, Bothic Bout It, Paypal).

If I could see sounds as colors, I'm pretty sure ZelooperZ shit would be a mixture of those weird ass colors like incarnadine or vermilion or chartreuse. ZelooperZ music is when you'd pause your VCR at a weird time and that green static line would roll through the tv and start glitching out. I know this doesn't really make a ton of sense to anyone except y'all death grip fans, but it's probably the most accurate representation of ZelooperZ music. It's weird, it's definitely something new, but it produces some absolute bangers sometimes. I really do fuck with this kid. Probably not something to show the people new to rap, but perfect for the veterans of dropping acid.

I don't know many other ways to say this, but ZelooperZ's music is an enigma. Listen to it yourself, take a cold shower afterwards, and form your own opinions on it. If you're looking to look up a new sound, listen to some experimental production, or hear a new dialect of English, why not? I wouldn't be holding your breath waiting for him to get onto your local radio but I could definitely see this man having a following for sure.

Merry Christmas HHH, hope this is useful today when trying to avoid the family. Or maybe y'all could all come together and Kumbaya to ISBD. Either way, let me know what y'all think of these guys.
