| [Discussion] "Good" vs "Bad" rhymes: a question of switching consonants? Posted: 24 Nov 2016 12:35 PM PST I'm a huge fan of rap (listen to it, make it, etc) and my boyfriend (gay) is much less so. He doesn't look down in it, but it's just not his thing. I discovered recently that we have completely different tastes when it comes to rhymes in a song. I think that the best rhymes are when only the vowel sounds are kept. For example "literal" and "bigger bowl" is a better rhyme to me than "literal" and "visceral," because the latter re-uses the "ral" sound at the end; in contrast, the former just repeats the vowel sequence while switching out the consonant sounds (at least when spoken out loud in an American accent). My boyfriend has the opposite preference; from what I understand, he would prefer "literal" and "visceral" instead of the more warped set of words which I prefer. Last night we saw "Moana," which Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote most of the lyrics for. I noticed quite a few spots where he seemed to share my preference for rhyming; he would keep a vowel sequence and swap all the consonants. Because he raps, and is a big fan of hip hop, it got me thinking: is this some sort of larger phenomenon within hip hop? Do fans of the genre have a really specific taste with rhymes? Obviously the way to find out is to ask other rap/hip-hop fans; I would love to hear any feedback. [link] [comments] |
