Announcement: HHH Album Listening Club with Dreamville/Spillage Village Producer Christo

Posted: 28 Aug 2020 12:47 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm Christo. I'm a DJ and Producer who works a lot with Dreamville and Spillage Village. I produced 151 Rum, Off Da Zoinky's, Under the Sun, Big Black Truck, and a lot more. I'm starting up a new album listening club here on /r/hiphopheads. 2 times a month I'm going to hop on and post an album, then the following Friday have a discussion here on that album. I'll be hoping on Twitch that night to go over the thread and then make some music of my own or take a look at some beats I've made that draw from the album. The conversations can be anything album related. You could dissect the themes, instruments, samples, inspirations, or maybe discuss sales numbers/charts. There are no strict guidelines, just conversations.

I'm trying to keep most of the conversation on the discussion thread but feel free to shoot me random ideas or topics on twitter or ig to get more people involved using #StosAlbumClub

The first album is going to be Thug Motivation 101 by Young Jeezy

I wrote a (video) essay about dvr - a 16 year old artist who went from an EP made in his bedroom to a song with Kenny Beats in 3 weeks with no industry connections

Posted: 28 Aug 2020 02:03 PM PDT

Video version!

No, the title isn't clickbait. Meet dvr, a 16 year old artist from Scotland. If you somehow don't know who Kenny Beats is, his production credits include Vince Staples, Rico Nasty, Denzel Curry, Dababy, Ski Mask The Slump God, KEY!, JPEGMAFIA, Dominic Fike etc. All of the above, except Dababy, are favourites of mine.

With nearly 40,000 tracks being added to Spotify every day, being a new independent artist means you can't just make the music and press upload. Spotify CEO, Daniel Ek recently said "you can't record every three to four years and think that's going to be enough". Now whether that should or should not be the case is an entirely different debate, unfortunately, it's the harsh reality that exists. In order to get noticed, independent musicians then have to (a) make good music (b) promote said music across different platforms, whether that be cold emails to music blogs, relative newcomer TikTok and other social media or good old word of mouth.

dvr, an independent musician himself, with no industry connections, had just released his first ep "Tape_01" - the music was good, but no one was hearing it. Songs like "Muscles" and "Am Sleep" were rough and lofi, yet displayed impressive indie pop production with catchy guitar riffs and interesting drums. Have a listen for yourself. dvr however has some other, more left field inspirations. He told me in our interview:

"I listen to quite a lot of stuff. For the EP, a few of my big influences were obviously Frank, mk.gee, and Foo Fighters — Dave Grohl, I grew up listening to them, all the time. Oh and also, this little indie band called Loving, and also Steve Lacy."

I know what you might be thinking. Frank Ocean? So was I. But a quick listen to dvr's latest single "Thru The City" displays a knack for slow, dreamy R&B cuts.

It's raw, but to have all that at 16 is impressive nonetheless. Anyways, back to the subject at hand,

Being an avid fan of Kenny's, he posted a link to the EP in the KennyBeats discord, a 50,000 strong community centered around making music. As you can imagine, there is a lot of average music posted there. So when someone as talented as dvr cuts through that noise, people take notice.

The people in question are the moderators of the Kenny Beats discord. One of them liked the EP so much he decided to send it to Kenny -- while he was live on Twitch with 2000+ people watching. (Korson, the mod in question, said he felt it was "long overdue Kenny heard dvr's music). You should watch his reaction here. Initially reluctant to listen live, Kenny only gave in once he saw the chat erupt with support for him - if discord servers have hometown heroes - he's one of the few on Kenny's discord.

Here he is talking about the event,

"That was quite surreal. Cause I actually had no idea what was happening. Felix and Korson [mods] didn't even tell me that they were gonna send it to him .. I woke up at 8am and I had like hundreds of notifications on my phone of people just like telling me to wake up, cause Kenny's listening to my stuff. So I immediately just started watching the clip, and that was a pretty surreal moment."

More importantly though, Kenny liked the EP so much he offered to produce a song for dvr. Now, one might argue that this is a huge stroke of luck, and they'd be right. Dvr got incredibly lucky (and he admits as much himself), but at the end of the day, if his music wasn't good, I wouldn't be writing this story.

Here he is talking about that,

That was awesome. I think that's what really carried it on, cause if it was just a shout out then that would be like awesome, but the fact that he actually wanted to work with me was massive. I've done my part on the song, he's done his part, and now we're just waiting for Alex [Tumay] to mix it.

The song in question, "Missing You" (snippet here), is set to come out sometime this month, and is mixed by Alex Tumay. Kenny even played it to FINNEAS and Billie Eilish live on Twitch.

It's an incredible story in itself, but I feel like it points to a larger movement of sorts. Obviously, meeting people and making music on the internet has been around for a minute. Brockhampton is a famous example of that - but even Brockhampton moved in with each other before really giving it a 100%. Across the internet, but specifically through Discord, a new model of music making is starting to spring up - 100% virtual, spanning across continents. Artists in the Kenny Beats community recently released an EP he was raving about. I can't wait to see what comes next!

--

Recommended if you like: Rex Orange County, Dominic Fike, Omar Apollo, Frank Ocean

Songs you should listen to by dvr: Muscles, Thru the City, Lonely, Am Sleep

Griselda Appreciation Post, and some intro for beginners

Posted: 27 Aug 2020 11:10 AM PDT

First of all, for the mods: I know the posting requirements here are strict, and I scoured the rules to make sure I would not run afoul of any of them. As far as I can tell, posts like this, if high effort, are allowed. I put a lot of effort into this, so I hope it's okay.

Are you tired of rappers who announce a ton of projects and don't follow through? Do you like groups that have a combination of extreme swagger and braggadocio combined with incredible lyricism and surprising heart and emotional honesty? Are you a sucker for the classic boom bap sound, but also happy to hear people rap over almost any kind of beat?

Then boy, do I have the group for you.

If you are unaware, Griselda, a group of rappers from Buffalo, NY, featuring Westside Gunn, Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine, and, now, Boldy James (from Detroit) has been absolutely killing the game recently.

I think what makes them standout is their consistency, their aesthetic, and their old school style. They have an enormous body of music out there, with much more on the way, and any given Griselda project is probably going to be good. Their album artwork and production style, combined with Westside Gunn's high class/low class aesthetic, really imbues their work with a grimy hood rich exterior that contains some incredibly thoughtful concepts and a style that stays similar throughout their projects while not being afraid to change up. I love how artistic their album covers are, and if you haven't seen pictures of Westside Gunn's more outrageous outfits, I highly suggest it. Exhibit A:

Westside Gunn looking hard as fuck in a pink striped winter jacket with matching hat

I first became aware of Griselda through Westside Gunn in 2018, when I tried listening to Supreme Blientele but couldn't finish it because I thought the mixing was terrible (still do).

The big moment for me was when Benny put out The Plugs I Met last year. I was initially pulled in by the incredibly stacked feature list (if Black Thought and Pusha T are on the same album, that's an automatic listen for me), and was blown away by the quality of Benny's lyricism, the concept of the album, the amazingly atmospheric production, and the cover art. Conway and 38 Spesh also have some awesome verses ("I got a stick, and a lamb, like I'm fresh out the bible, huh" is one of my favorite rap lines ever). I keep going back to that project.

I then listened to Tana Talk 3, which is like if the Plugs I Met was longer. It's a little bit less tight for the same reason, but ultimately I feel like I could keep listening to Benny rap over grimy beats pretty much forever.

After that for me came WWCD, which has DR BIRDS on it, definitely one of my favorite Griselda songs. It's really feels like it sums up their conscious hood rich perspective and the general Griselda aesthetic. The Old Groove is also a crazy good song. I have no idea who Novel is, but his singing and rapping on this song, combined with the beat switch, is really affecting. I think it's beautiful.

Next was The Price of Tea in China, by then affiliate and now full member Boldy James. Boldy is a great lyricist, and I love the Alchemist's production. Personally, I think Boldy doesn't have the swagger the other group members have, and his understated flow, while good, can also be a bit boring. Still a great project though.

Then came Pray for Paris. This was what really made me get Westside Gunn. He's obviously nowhere near Conway or Benny in terms of lyrical quality, but he is kind of like Kanye in that his real strength is his ability to cultivate an aesthetic. Pray for Paris, like every single Griselda release, has great cover art, and is a consistently great album. George Bondo is another quintessential Griselda track, the old timey piano beat is perfect, and every member has a high quality verse. 327 on the other hand is a super chill vibe track that shows the versatility Griselda has in terms of types of songs they'll do.

When I heard that Conway was releasing an album with the Alchemist, I already knew it would be great, and indeed, LULU, if overshadowed by it's slightly better cousin Alfredo, is a quality project, with consistently great lyrics from Conway, and the Alchemist performing at his usual level (very high).

I took it back for the next album, listening to Hitler Wears Hermes 4. Let me first say that while I have only listened to 4 and 7, and haven't listened to 7 enough to have an informed opinion on it, Hitler Wears Hermes is my favorite mixtape series name of all time. As always, this one has incredible album artwork, a fucking super artistic Hitler collage. I mean, do I have to say anymore? But the most important thing about this album is the song The Cow, where Conway raps incredibly emotionally and honestly about the realities of his life, and dealing with so much death. Especially considering this was pretty early in their careers and how much they've accomplished since then, this song is really a standout. That song shines above the others, but the whole tape is great.

I also have to mention just how many features they've had in the past year, Gunn and Conway have great verses at the end of the Free Nationals Album, Conway's verse about being a father on Alfredo is another example of his incredible range, and they always pop up in unexpected places. Conway has an excellent verse on CJ Fly's album RUDEBWOY, which, while I have your attention, you should also check out.

TL:DR: Griselda is dope, and it's a great time to be a Griselda fan.

For those who are familiar with Griselda, I'm curious what your favorite songs and projects are. For those who may hopefully be listening to Griselda the first time, what do you think?

Thanks for reading! Looking forward to having a good discussion.
