Griselda Appreciation Post, and some intro for beginners

Posted: 27 Aug 2020 11:10 AM PDT

First of all, for the mods: I know the posting requirements here are strict, and I scoured the rules to make sure I would not run afoul of any of them. As far as I can tell, posts like this, if high effort, are allowed. I put a lot of effort into this, so I hope it's okay.

Are you tired of rappers who announce a ton of projects and don't follow through? Do you like groups that have a combination of extreme swagger and braggadocio combined with incredible lyricism and surprising heart and emotional honesty? Are you a sucker for the classic boom bap sound, but also happy to hear people rap over almost any kind of beat?

Then boy, do I have the group for you.

If you are unaware, Griselda, a group of rappers from Buffalo, NY, featuring Westside Gunn, Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine, and, now, Boldy James (from Detroit) has been absolutely killing the game recently.

I think what makes them standout is their consistency, their aesthetic, and their old school style. They have an enormous body of music out there, with much more on the way, and any given Griselda project is probably going to be good. Their album artwork and production style, combined with Westside Gunn's high class/low class aesthetic, really imbues their work with a grimy hood rich exterior that contains some incredibly thoughtful concepts and a style that stays similar throughout their projects while not being afraid to change up. I love how artistic their album covers are, and if you haven't seen pictures of Westside Gunn's more outrageous outfits, I highly suggest it. Exhibit A:

Westside Gunn looking hard as fuck in a pink striped winter jacket with matching hat

I first became aware of Griselda through Westside Gunn in 2018, when I tried listening to Supreme Blientele but couldn't finish it because I thought the mixing was terrible (still do).

The big moment for me was when Benny put out The Plugs I Met last year. I was initially pulled in by the incredibly stacked feature list (if Black Thought and Pusha T are on the same album, that's an automatic listen for me), and was blown away by the quality of Benny's lyricism, the concept of the album, the amazingly atmospheric production, and the cover art. Conway and 38 Spesh also have some awesome verses ("I got a stick, and a lamb, like I'm fresh out the bible, huh" is one of my favorite rap lines ever). I keep going back to that project.

I then listened to Tana Talk 3, which is like if the Plugs I Met was longer. It's a little bit less tight for the same reason, but ultimately I feel like I could keep listening to Benny rap over grimy beats pretty much forever.

After that for me came WWCD, which has DR BIRDS on it, definitely one of my favorite Griselda songs. It's really feels like it sums up their conscious hood rich perspective and the general Griselda aesthetic. The Old Groove is also a crazy good song. I have no idea who Novel is, but his singing and rapping on this song, combined with the beat switch, is really affecting. I think it's beautiful.

Next was The Price of Tea in China, by then affiliate and now full member Boldy James. Boldy is a great lyricist, and I love the Alchemist's production. Personally, I think Boldy doesn't have the swagger the other group members have, and his understated flow, while good, can also be a bit boring. Still a great project though.

Then came Pray for Paris. This was what really made me get Westside Gunn. He's obviously nowhere near Conway or Benny in terms of lyrical quality, but he is kind of like Kanye in that his real strength is his ability to cultivate an aesthetic. Pray for Paris, like every single Griselda release, has great cover art, and is a consistently great album. George Bondo is another quintessential Griselda track, the old timey piano beat is perfect, and every member has a high quality verse. 327 on the other hand is a super chill vibe track that shows the versatility Griselda has in terms of types of songs they'll do.

When I heard that Conway was releasing an album with the Alchemist, I already knew it would be great, and indeed, LULU, if overshadowed by it's slightly better cousin Alfredo, is a quality project, with consistently great lyrics from Conway, and the Alchemist performing at his usual level (very high).

I took it back for the next album, listening to Hitler Wears Hermes 4. Let me first say that while I have only listened to 4 and 7, and haven't listened to 7 enough to have an informed opinion on it, Hitler Wears Hermes is my favorite mixtape series name of all time. As always, this one has incredible album artwork, a fucking super artistic Hitler collage. I mean, do I have to say anymore? But the most important thing about this album is the song The Cow, where Conway raps incredibly emotionally and honestly about the realities of his life, and dealing with so much death. Especially considering this was pretty early in their careers and how much they've accomplished since then, this song is really a standout. That song shines above the others, but the whole tape is great.

I also have to mention just how many features they've had in the past year, Gunn and Conway have great verses at the end of the Free Nationals Album, Conway's verse about being a father on Alfredo is another example of his incredible range, and they always pop up in unexpected places. Conway has an excellent verse on CJ Fly's album RUDEBWOY, which, while I have your attention, you should also check out.

TL:DR: Griselda is dope, and it's a great time to be a Griselda fan.

For those who are familiar with Griselda, I'm curious what your favorite songs and projects are. For those who may hopefully be listening to Griselda the first time, what do you think?

Thanks for reading! Looking forward to having a good discussion.
