/r/Hiphopheads COVID-19 Donations Thread

Posted: 23 Apr 2020 01:11 PM PDT

Hello,

After some success over at the vastly superior sub /r/hiphopcirclejerk I figured we could get something going here too. We want to encourage those who can to donate to COVID-19 related relief charities to help those who are struggling now.

We will be offering some minor incentives for donations that are the following:

$5: Custom text flair

$10: Custom text flair + colouring

$5: Get out of a temporary ban

$5: Post something from the overposted/favourite's list

$20: Post a meme to this sub.

$20: Change the sidebar pic.

$0.50 CDN: Remove /u/cohtoh as mod

$50: Video date with /u/Imatruebraj

We will accept any other ideas people have, but not entirely sure what else we could do. Image flairs are out.

Proof of donation will be accepted as a screenshot from an email with some sort of identifying marker.

Here are some recommended charities. This is incomplete and going local is also always nice.

  • Direct Relief: U.S.-based organization working to get protective gear and critical care medications to health care workers responding to the coronavirus.
  • Immigrant Worker Safety Net Fund: Launching to provide immediate resources and financial support to migrants, refugees and low-wage workers in the United States.
  • National Bail Out: Organization working to bail out and provide support to Black mothers and caregivers, aims to end money bail and pretrial detention in the U.S.
  • Adopt a Native Elder: Provides assistance, including food boxes, to Navajo elders. Navajo Nation, one of the nation's largest food deserts where most live in poverty, has lost at least 41 people to coronavirus.
  • Artists for Lumad Bakwit School: Group donating food and medical supplies for indigenous children in the Philippines displaced from their homelands prior to the virus. (This organization is mod-approved, they are good people)
  • Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: Nonprofit humanitarian and medical relief organization providing supplies to hospitals and at-risk Palestinian children.
  • Native American Community Response Fund: Supports Indigenous and POC-led social change initiatives, currently directing funds to Native American nonprofits on the ground.
  • Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF): Provides medical assistance to people around the world affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare.

Also willing to accept blood donations or volunteer work.

Whichever sub between /r/hiphopcirclejerk and /r/hiphopheads that fundraises less by the end of the month gets deleted.

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

Who is the worst live performer you’ve seen?

Posted: 25 Apr 2020 10:02 AM PDT

For me Lil Mosey barely edges out Dababy. Dababy comes out on stage and acts like an idiot while his songs play in the background. Lil Mosey meanwhile, has zero stage presence and absolutely no energy and at this point I'm also willing to say no talent or musical ability whatsoever (and I know this one isn't a fluke because I've regretfully seen him twice as an opener)

Who's the worst person you've been unlucky enough to see?

True Pitch of IGOR: Using A.I to help change the pitch of Tyler The Creator's Album (properly done?)

Posted: 25 Apr 2020 05:56 PM PDT

About 8 months ago on this subreddit, someone posted a link to a Youtube video that was meant to be the normal pitch of Tyler The Creator's Igor album. Many were impressed with the overall sound quality however there were some criticisms that were made that I found entertaining. The main one was that the "original pitch" was a misnomer due to the fact that the instrumental elements of the songs on this album are in "normal pitch", it's just that the vocals are higher. This led me to an experiment that I am currently working on using some A.I tools.

For example:

Original

Someone's "normal" pitch track A BOY IS A GUN

vs my (rough) example: https://clyp.it/ce2ztp1j?token=41104767bf742cf32b41c9ad69a97733

Also, I'm not intending to do copyright infringement this is moreso an educational piece.

[DISCUSSION] Kevin Abstract - ARIZONA BABY (1 Year Later)

Posted: 25 Apr 2020 09:18 AM PDT

Arizona Baby (stylized in all caps) is the third studio album by American rapper Kevin Abstract, released on April 25, 2019 by Question Everything, Inc. through RCA Records. The album was released cumulatively, with the eponymous first part (stylized as ARIZONA baby) released on April 11, followed by a second part titled Ghettobaby on April 18. It was primarily produced by Jack Antonoff and Abstract's fellow Brockhampton member Romil Hemnani, with several other members of Brockhampton providing additional production, vocals, and instrumentation.

Release and promotion

Kevin Abstract teased the project in March 2019, sharing its artwork without explanation. On April 8, a music video for "Big Wheels" was released, under the video title "The 1-9-9-9 is Coming", alongside an image teasing the dates April 11, April 18 and April 25. On April 11, following a teaser video for "Georgia" the three-song project was released, with Ghettobaby announced to be forthcoming. On April 16 Abstract clarified that Arizona Baby would be his second full-length album, being released gradually. Ghettobaby was released on April 18, including the previously released music alongside three new tracks, and was promoted by a music video for "Baby Boy". The complete album was released on April 25, following a music video for "Peach".

Music and lyrics

Abstract has cited Lana Del Rey's "Venice Bitch" (also co-produced by Antonoff) as inspiring the album, as well as "Westcoast Collective" by American rapper Dominic Fike, who appeared on the final album.

The first part of Arizona Baby was described as "stand[ing] on the cutting edge of modern hip-hop", taking an experimental approach to pop songwriting.[14] The album juxtaposes gentle vocoders and acoustic guitars against "galloping" production and rapping. "Big Wheels" features "sparkling synths and skittering beats", and has been compared to Abstract's hip hop work with Brockhampton, while "Joy Ride" is built around trumpets and has been noted to demonstrate producer Jack Antonoff's influence. "Georgia" has been described as tender and nostalgic.

Ghettobaby, the album's second part has been described as increasingly personal, discussing Abstract's childhood, former friendships and insecurity, and featuring mostly sung R&B-hip hop fusions. "Corpus Christi" contains a reference to former Brockhampton member Ameer Vann, who was fired from the group following domestic abuse allegations. "Baby Boy" is a psychedelic rock song, with plucked guitar and distant synthesizers.

Kanye West and SxSW 2011

Posted: 25 Apr 2020 07:56 PM PDT

Attended the SxSW Kanye performance at the power plant and noticed cameras on booms and pro stuff, Was excited to be able to go back and re watch the performance again at some point because, honestly, was one of the best shows I've been to.

However, I've never seen any footage anywhere other than the shotty 2011 era of camera phone video.

Would anyone know why they would have production style equipment and not release footage from it?

Also: if anyone has footage from Aesop Rock or Baths that year I'd love to see it.

[RANT] Dr. Dre is 100% a billionaire

Posted: 25 Apr 2020 10:24 PM PDT

In the wake of Kanye's Forbes announcement as a billionaire, I've done some calculations that seem to confirm exactly what everybody thought in 2014. That Dr. Dre is (or at least was) a billionaire.

Beats was sold for $3.2 billion (some sources site $3B instead). By the time of the sale, Dre had about 25% equity. He received $750m - $800m from the sale (pre tax). Dre had a net worth of more than (conservative estimate) $350m before the Beats sale.

Of his $800m stake, he paid about $265m in capital gains tax. So he took home about $535m.

$535m + his original $350m = $885m.

Plus he will have millions in undisclosed assets and isn't the type to let Forbes study his accounts.

These are from my calculations. This is how much he should've been worth (conservatively) by the end of 2014. I don't know how Forbes has arrived at such a lower figure.

Since then, he has released him Compton album, released the Straight Outta Compton movie, worked on Oxnard, The Documentary 2, Friends and Family, multiple works with 50 Cent, T.I., Stat Quo, Marsha Ambrosius and Anderson Paak., as well as releasing the soundtrack to the Defiant Ones (as well as staring in it and working on it), and worked on two Eminem albums, not to mention all Aftermath (and their subsidiaries') releases, not to mention royalties from all his previous works, which are only increasing in popularity again because of SOC, Defiant Ones, etc.

I can't fathom the idea of, with all this plus his previous (at least) $885m, Dre not being a billionaire.

And even if he isn't, he was, for a brief time, hip hop's first and only billionaire. Before the taxes were paid and settled, Dre was a billionaire, even if he would end up paying a ridiculous $265m tax for the beats deal.

These are all my own workings. I feel Forbes have really goofed in tackling Dre's net worth. Other (albeit less reputed) publishers value Dre at about $3B.
