2022 is almost halfway though and to bring some substance to the eventual discussions about the best album this semester (and also for the year-end lists), I got the permission to host a rate that includes some of the biggest releases of the last months.

Three albums will for sure be included, for the fourth album I'd like to have a vote (link at the end of the post). Polls will be closed Wednesday, 06/22/22 on 6 pm EST.

The three sure spots are (in order of their release):

  • Pusha T - It's Almost Dry (released: April 22)
  • Future - I Never Liked You (released: April 29)
  • Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers (released: May 13)

All these were no-brainers due to the high reputation of the artists and the delivered quality. For the forth spot, I would have included today's surprise Drake album but there was barely any rapping on it. Instead, the forth spot shall go to one of these seven contenders:

  • Kodak Black - Back For Everything
  • Babyface Ray - Face
  • Saba - Few Good Things

FAQ:

Q: Why is Gunna #2? I remember reading he beat the Weeknd?

A: Gunna won the more coveted Billboard 200 #1. When people say that an album went #1, they're referring to the Billboard 200. The Billboard 200 doesn't release actual sales numbers for most releases like HDD does. HDD and Billboard 200 are both industry standards. HDD gave Gunna 2k more sales and the Weeknd 6k more sales, so the Weeknd ended up outselling Gunna for HDD's chart. We aren't going to switch to using the Billboard 200 just for the two top results. HDD is better for comparing across weeks because they give more sales information.

Q: Deluxe's are on here? How does that work?

A: It's just the sales for the album in that week. Counts all the sales/streaming done including songs on original album in the week that the deluxe dropped. Technically not a first week but interesting to look at (to me) so they're included.

A: It's sorted by the total first-week sales

A: Pure sales are purchases of the album (iTunes, Amazon, physicals, etc)

A: Track equivalent sales (or TEA/Track Equivalent Albums) is a term used to describe the sale of music downloads or singles. A track equivalent album is equal to 10 tracks, or 10 songs

Q: Where is X album?

A: Only albums that make the top 50 in sales+streaming for their debut week are counted

Q: Why do some albums show exact sales numbers while others do not?

A: The albums that do not show exact numbers are the ones that have had sales corrections from Billboard
