[Discussion] Mac Miller - The Divine Feminine (5 years later)

Posted: 16 Sep 2021 05:25 AM PDT

The Divine Feminine, released Sept. 16, 2016, is the fourth studio album by Mac Miller. The album features Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Ty Dolla Sign, and Ariana Grande, among others.

TDF is a pretty unique album when compared to most of Mac's other work. I personally believe it to be his most underrated project, and some of my favorite production in Mac's discography is found within this album.

What are y'all's favorite songs from the album?

Have your feelings towards the album changed since it's release?

How do you think this album compares to Mac's other projects?

Little Simz - 'Sometimes I Might Be Intervert' Review Thread

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 08:10 AM PDT

Metacrtici 88/100 as of 19 reviews

Album of the Year.com 90/100 as of 30 reviews

RYM: 4.07/5

Publication, score
Review

The Telegraph 5/5

An album that deserves a standing ovation– This astounding fourth studio release from the British performer confirms her as one of the best rappers in the world

The Line of Best Fit 10/10

Little Simz remains unstoppable with the cinematic storytelling of Sometimes I Might Be Introvert – With her blessings seemingly endless, Little Simz looks set to enter the Hall of Fame with the cinematic storytelling of Sometimes I Might Be Introvert.

Dork 5/5

This album is absolutely Little Simz's magnum opus – it's earth-shatteringly beyond what has come before, no easy feat considering her debut is one of the most revered of the past few years.

The Independent 5/5

The most thrilling album of the year – In a time where we find ourselves craving nuanced intelligence, 27-year-old Simbiatu Ajikawo knocks it out of the park with her cool, collected rumination over a series of varied grooves

The Arts Desk 5/5

The talented rapper takes things to another level in her masterful fourth album.

NME 5/5 Stunning introspection from a true great – The much-lauded London rapper melds razor-sharp lyricism, moving vulnerability and compassionate storytelling as she ascends to the level of legends

DIY 5/5

If 'GREY Area' saw Simz come-of-age as a rapper, 'Sometimes I Might Be Introvert' is Simz making her first long-lasting artistic stamp on the zeitgeist.

Evening Standard 5/5

Contrary to the title, Little Simz sounds like she's brimming with confidence on her extraordinary 19-track fourth album

Albumism 5/5

The fact that Simz is able to convince across the vast array of musical styles contained on the album is testament to her charisma, undeniable lyrical skills and the strength of the bond between her and Inflo.

Earmilk 9.5/10

This is the sound of an artist in full swing, and the arc of that swing is several years long now with no signs of losing momentum.

Sputnikmusic 4.7/10

In truth, this is an entirely new beast from the UK rapper. There's an argument to be made that Sometimes... is the fullest realisation of all Little Simz's facets, that the contrasts she's always employed from project to project are trapped in amber together in this one breathtaking moment.

AV Club -A

Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is as ambitious and intimate as anything the North-London MC has ever done, and an easy contender for the best rap album of the year, let alone the week.

Loud and Quiet 9/10

On S.I.M.B.I., Little Simz levels her successes by being herself, being introverted. And with that, she has made a record that prompts the kind of introspection that can lead to personal breakthroughs. It's an album to listen to over and over.

Louder than War 4.5/5

Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is a lush, expansive, sprawling masterpiece. Awash with sweeping strings and eternal conflict, Little Simz raps with potency and power. It's quite probably the album of the year, according to Louder Than War's Gordon Rutherford.

Gigwise 9/10

On Sometimes I Might Be Introvert Simz continues to operate at the highest echelons of British rap.

God is in the TV 9/10

Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is Little Simz's best record yet. Simz doesn't just find a voice, she finds a defining sound that mixes the melting brew of London. She bravely stands in the crosshairs of injustice, prejudice and the march of the right-wing and tears it down and builds herself up to the top of the mountain in the process. This is her moment and she seizes it.

No Ripcord 9/10

After her 2019 breakthrough GREY Area, Little Simz's artistry has grown tremendously. The immeasurable talent that hides behind Simbiatu Ajikawo's fourth LP's nineteen tracks confirms that she's one of the greatest artists of her generation. Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is an open window into the deep and private thoughts the London-based wants to share with us, aware that there's strength in being vulnerable.

Record Collector 4/5

It's rich with rallying cries and uplift, is allergic to doing the safe or obvious, and captures the pop temperature of the moment.

The Needle Drop 8/10

Uncut 8/10

Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is an even more ambitious conceptual album that finds her sharing her insecurities, praising her heroes and going on a fairytale voyage over 19 tracks.

The Skinny 4/5

While pulling from here and there, what binds Sometimes I Might Be Introvert together is a flair for the cinematic and the result is an album that's both monumental and an innermost peek into Little Simz's soul.

Clash 8/10

The cinematic flourishes are cranked up and Simz is more confessional than ever, pondering what defines her as both Little Simz the artist and Simbi the person. It makes for addictive listening.

The Guardian 4/5

rich, vital rap –Intensely creative as she discusses race, womanhood and family – and with a cameo from Emma Corrin – Simz's fourth album feels totally alive

Pop Matters 8/10

Little Simz explores familial and cultural themes, moving from stream-of-consciousness confessions to epigrammatic observations, volatile rants to equanimous self-examinations.

The Sydney Morning Herald 4/5

Her fourth studio album signals that, after years of being celebrated by the music industry, she is now ready to be embraced by the mainstream.

The Observer 4/5

soul-baring brilliance – Wordsmith Simbiatu Ajikawo unleashes non-stop killer cuts on her extraordinary fourth album

Pitchfork 7.7/10

On her fourth album, the UK rapper wrestles with the split between her public persona and private self, raising broadly relatable questions about the craving for validation.

Entertainment Weekly B

Ultimately, Introvert sees a champion in its lead character: a Black woman proud of the steps she's taken while simultaneously analyzing how stardom can force her to check inward.
