Recommended If You Like thread - September 04, 2021

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

[DISCUSSION] What makes an album rollout good? What are your favorite album rollouts?

Posted: 04 Sep 2021 05:45 AM PDT

We have just experienced the, hopefully, end of the rollouts for two major artists out right now. Drake & Kanye with albums Certified Lover Boy & DONDA, respectively. So with these wrapping up, there's been a lot of discourse about if their rollouts were good or bad. So what makes an album rollout good? In this case we saw both sides of the spectrum. A very minimal rollout on Drake's part, an extremely extravagant rollout from Kanye.

This being said, I do not want this to be a Drake vs. Kanye thread. The focus of this thread should be what you want out of an album rollout. There have been many album rollouts over the years, always upping the stakes. So what are the best album rollouts?

Bold, Brave and Beautiful is the only way to describe Little Simz - Sometimes I Might Be Introvert

Posted: 04 Sep 2021 12:20 PM PDT

Little Simz sometimes might be an introvert but she is far from shy. Despite the archetypal image of an introvert being quiet and meek, Simz grabs you by your ears for an hour straight, screaming and yelling "This is who I am, faults, beauty and all." There is no shame in what she sings about, it is raw in an ambitious album that is cinematic, it is emotional, it grows, at no point does she filter herself for the listener and hold your hand. The album treats you like a real person who does not want the simple dumbed down version but instead all the emotion.

Kendrick has said that Simz is "the illest doing it right now" and it is easy to see how. The UK rap scene is flourishing with international recognition following the growth of artists such as Dave, Stormzy and Slowthai. After the success of 'Grey Area' releasing in 2019 the spotlight has been cast, and Simz has taken it to show the industry why she is deserving to be the Queen. Despite boasting a strong 19 tracks the richness and scope of the album is not lost out at any point as it keeps you engaged through an adventure of genres and themes. From the fanfares, orchestral grandness and imposing strings of 'Introvert' to electronic beats with minimalist production on "Rollin' Stone" to taking on us on a run down memory-lane to her roots from Nigeria and Caribbean-infused cowbells and drums on tracks like "Point and Kill" featuring Nigerian artist Obongjayar. The variety in motifs, expressions and emotions throughout the album shows Simz ability as an artist and her impressive technical proficiency.

We begin the album at "Introvert". Despite the title, the song is far from quiet. Marching band snares grab your attention and tell you "Hey buddy, the music is starting now - you should quiet down and listen." Fanfare horns dominate the production, with vocals harmonising in the background, it's maximising and full and the least introverted thing you have ever heard. She delivers power lyrics discussing politics and the black experience alongside her passion and love for music whilst Cleo Sol performs charming soul vocals. This is one of the most powerful openers I have ever heard and reminds me of the opener to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

In the following tracks "Woman" "Two Worlds Apart" and "I love you, I hate you" explores feminist narratives, Love, relationships and her childhood - specifically growing up without a Dad. You cannot help to notice how slick the production is, the beats spin and bounce around you, incredible vocals from Cleo Sol which contrast with Simz strong delivery, "Two Worlds Apart" samples Smoke Robinson, texturing the song with soul, it sounds incredible - I have no adjectives, no metaphors, it just sounds plain incredible. "I love you, I hate you" sings the title throughout the song at the end of each line, it is catchy and after the first verse you will catch yourself singing along 'I hate you' and 'I love you'. The track also features my favourite line on the album "Never thought my parent would give me my first heartbreak." It's raw, intimate and honest. Simz does a fantastic job of provoking your empathy and connecting emotionally.

We are then hit by "Little Q, Pt 1&2" with "Gems - Interlude." Usually, interludes are not worth discussing, they tend to extend playtime beyond what is necessary and take away from the experience. Simz however flips that and makes the interludes necessary and crucial, giving breathing moments to the album so that you can process the emotions. "Little Q" whilst a low moment of the album, is simply beautiful. Light beat, which is drum driven, and a smooth flow telling us the story of her cousin's experience and her reflection on how different it was. "Gems - Interlude" sounds like something straight from a Disney film, amazing.

"Speed" "Standing Ovation" and "I See You" is a 3-track production-adventure experience. "Speed" has thumping drums that dominate your ears with echo-y vocals from Simz, "Standing Ovation" returns to the fanfare motif explored before, light on the drums but strong on the trumpets and strings whilst "I See You" deviates from anything heard so far, it features an acoustic guitar riff with live drums that sounds warm and intimate. Simz vocal performance really shines on this track. Its soulful, pure and intimate, close to the heart wrapping you up in a warm blanket.

"Rollin Stone" following an interlude marks the second half of the album. It's fast and sounds like "Venom". It is the weakest track on the album that cuts the aesthetic in an unpleasant way, however the electronic drums beat switch create an almost "hip-hop/house hybrid" that is interesting but, ultimately, does not redeem the track. "Protect my energy" keeps following the idea that "this album will feature lots of genres and variety!", funk bassline with 80s synths that pop, it is high energy and makes you want to get up and move. The chorus is catchy and hooks you in with the beautiful "That's why I-I, Love bein' alone"

"Never Make Promises - Interlude" is orchestral Disney. Nothing else to say. Simz then decided to make a track leaning on her culture and Nigerian heritage, leading us to the tracks "Point and Kill" and "Fear No Man". The first of which features an incredibly catchy chorus performed by 'Obongjayar', I love how both artists let their accents come through in this track and gives you a real Afrobeat feel. "Fear No Man" sounds like a song you would hear at a carnival with one of the most impressive sound choruses I have ever heard - I do not know if it is sampled or how it was recorded but it is bold.

We are then met with the closing tracks of "The Garden - Interlude", "How Did You Get Here" and "Miss Understood". British actress Emma Corrin features on the interlude over the same whimsical Disney instrumentals heard before. "How Did You Get Here" has beautiful choir singing that as a Kanye stan I love, the instrumentals and almost spoken-word delivery reminds me of Gang Signs & Prayers. It is a soul heavy track that is intimate and crucial, it should have been the closing track. "Miss Understood" has a catchy bridge and a cute piano but does not offer anything new to the album that we cannot find in other tracks.

A musical exploration of: genres, resentment, growth, politics, struggle, introversion, culture, heritage and identity. The scope is enormous and unfortunately at times it does feel like Simz has bitten off more than she can chew. "Standing Ovation" fanfare motif feels overused by the 9th track, "Rollin Stone" whilst interesting, does not suit the experience and "Miss Understood" should have been reserved for the deluxe edition. With almost ten minutes of interludes delivering cliche hyper-positive messages, it wears thin. Despite the weaknesses, the production is one of a kind and is complimented by Simz opening up in a way that many artists do not. 9/10. Video.

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Nelly - Heartland

Posted: 04 Sep 2021 08:54 AM PDT

Heartland is the newest Nelly project, a country rap fusion EP clocking in at around 26 minutes with 8 tracks. Nelly works with various country acts sitting at many different popularity levels. Heartland sold about 14k first week. Here I'll rate each song and the project and give my final thoughts at the end.

1) Lil bit (ft. Florida Georgia Line) - 80 million spotify streams

This song was a single leading into the project and I wouldn't be surprised if it carried the project to 14k first week sales since it is easily the most popular song on the project being certified platinum by the RIAA. This is the type of song that would play at a stadium or homecoming or something, especially in more rural areas. - 8/10

2) High Horse (ft. BRELAND and Blanco Brown) - 2.9 million spotify streams

The chorus is hit or miss and makes a bit of a quirky song. Nelly comes with a good flow that definitely saves the song in my opinion. BRELAND has a good verse as well. - 6/10

3) Grits & Glamour (ft. Kane Brown) - I can't see it, prob under 1 million

This is a smooth track that is basically a generic "this girl hot and I am hot" track. It sounds solid, may look into Kane more.- 6.5/10

4) Ms. Drive Me Crazy (ft. Darius Rucker and City Spud) - 125,201 spotify streams

This is a good song, I like the chorus and the verses are smooth as well. I feel like this shouldn't work but it does I really recommend the song as I didn't even like it first listen but enjoyed it on the second listen - 8.5/10

5) Country Boy Do (ft. Tyler Hubbard) - 915,981 spotify streams

I think the chorus is annoying here (the country boy do part) but the verses aren't too bad. - 5.5/10

6) Someone Somewhere (ft. George Birge) - 114,362

A generic "I miss you/nostalgia" song. It isn't bad, just kinda generic, no real depth. - 5.5/10

7) 5 Drinks Ago - I can't see the number here, probably under 500k

Just Nelly on this, it's another "I miss you/nostalgia" song. I don't care for this song. Don't really see a reason for this song when the last song had a similar vibe but better, especially when this is the longest song here. Also 5 drinks is lightweight territory smh - 4/10

8) Follow Me (ft. Chris Brandi) - 115,389 spotify streams

This chorus isn't it, it's pretty much what I expected when someone said Nelly is making a country EP. Actually this song in general feels too close to country to really enjoy. - 3/10

9) Good Times Roll (Jimmie Allen is given first billing as this song is his and from 2020) - 18.3 million spotify streams

This song is super country which makes sense since it isn't Nelly's song and is a country song by Allen from 2020. With such high streams I assume this was added to boost sales, especially with the low streams on other songs. - 4/10

Overall the project isn't as bad as I thought it would be but I'm sure a lot of people won't give it a chance because it's country. Which is sad because pre-judging stuff is stupid. Out of the project 3 songs (lil bit, High Horse, and Ms. Drive Me Crazy) made my driving playlist (currently 1304 songs, 78 hours). The project falls apart around "5 drinks" (song 7) and the last 3 songs show a drop in quality. But the songs overall aren't egregious, at worst it's background music.

Song score: 5.6/10 (average of per song score)

Overall score: 5.75/10 (how much I enjoyed the project)

TLDR: 5.75/10

Country isn't the devil but brevity is the soul of wit and if the project was longer I would score it less.

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Drake - Certified Lover Boy

Posted: 03 Sep 2021 06:52 PM PDT

Drake just played unreleased Kanye song "Life of the Party" on his radio show Fry Yiy Fridays

Posted: 03 Sep 2021 11:53 PM PDT

It included direct disses towards Drake, talking about the group chat message and Sicko Mode. The song was unreleased so I'm assuming he got a leak from Kanye's camp.

Drake lines in the song:

"That Sicko Mode was his biggest song but gone cause Donda was the best ghostwriter I ever had"

"I put Virgil and Drake on the same text, and it wasn't about the matching arcteryx or Kid Cudi dress, just told these grown men stop it with the funny shit, I might hire the whole team from ACG"

"(?) We was the new Abu Dhabi, told Drake don't play with me on GD and he sent that message to everybody, so if I hit you with a wyd, you better hit me with a yes sir I'm writing everything you need, I told you I was gonna take the summer back, so any of the cap won't take none of that"

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Little Simz - Sometimes I Might Be Introvert

Posted: 03 Sep 2021 07:41 PM PDT

All I can say is wow. The production is easily some of the best I've ever heard and Simz flows compliment it perfectly. If you haven't given this a listen yet I would HIGHLY recommend giving it a listen. This was the first time I've ever even heard of Little Simz and I'm blown away. Easy an AOTY contender.

Drake under fire for R Kelly credit on TSU for sample

Posted: 03 Sep 2021 07:45 AM PDT

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/drake-r-kelly-sample-tsu-1220360/amp/

According to WhoSampled, Certified Lover Boy's stripper ode "TSU" utilizes the same symphonic intro found in Kelly's 1998 single "Half on a Baby." Due to the sample, Kelly is also a credited songwriter on the track, alongside Drake, the track's producers (Harley Arsenault, Noel Cadastre, OC Ron G) and Christopher Cross, Timbaland and Justin Timberlake; N'Sync's version of Cross' "Sailing" is also sampled on the track. (A rep for Drake declined to comment on the Kelly sample. However, the credit was confirmed via multiple streaming services.) The Kelly sample occurs at the 20-second mark below: https://youtu.be/nS9LoYZVbfs

We'll see what ensues after.

An Extroverted Genre Great Emerges On Little Simz’s ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’ - Album Review

Posted: 03 Sep 2021 09:02 PM PDT

The ways in which a celebrity can be introverted, really, are slim. Even if their preferred style is inward, their lives are always being consumed openly. Little Simz, ever the outsider, wrestles with being caught somewhere in the middle on her fourth album, 'Sometimes I Might Be Introvert'. The London rapper's 2019 record 'GREY Area' was also wrapped in the conundrum of two worlds, tearing its protagonist apart at the seams until Simz re-evaluated her self-worth. She does so here in spades too, but it's coming from within this time. In a display of brains and brawn, Simz's bottled thoughts flow endlessly into this weird, wonderful, and sometimes hysterical dissection of what it means to be human. As she'll tell you, the worst, her childhood trauma, is behind her, but the present is fairly pressing too. Moments of joy are few and far between here, but that's true of Simz's world, and she's not going to start pandering now, not here, not ever.

As the title suggests, the narratives here are insular but rarely in Simz's preferred, petite form, private quarrels that have gotten so out of hand they've taken on a life of their own. Throughout, Simz fights the introverts' battle, facing intrusive thoughts she's mulled over at length. Like on 'I Love You, I Hate You', where Simz confronts parental conflicts of the past, donning a steely face so as not to completely break down. As far as she's come, there is no escape, the war wages on within. Proof of her growth can be spotted on 'Miss Understood' where Simz tries to untangle a knotty situation with her sister that's left them both burnt. No longer are these sacred truths an internal, or even private affair. Simz lays bare her deeply human issues for the world to feel, in a way that strips the upper echelon of their privacy and affords ubiquitous lows.

On a level playing field, Simz often widens the scope of 'Sometimes I Might Be Introvert', threatening more obtuse issues in an extroverted fashion. In a new environment, the prodigy maintains composure, even when the foe is wealthier. 'Introvert' is a literal culprit of this formula. Simz raises a seismic, orchestral fanfare to aid her raucous rebellion against Government corruption. The heroism continues as Simz showers female figures of importance on 'Woman' with due praise. All the while, she keeps a steady, bare-knuckled grit to fend off the generations of stereotypes she's in part experiencing herself now. These themes of heritage and womanhood course through the DNA of the LP, crafting an unequivocal identity for Simz who, seemingly, still, has everything to gain and nothing to lose. That hunger is on display in full on 'Fear No Man', where Simz rides atop frothing, tribalistic drums with a cool callousness. It's more braggadocio than anything else, but you'd be a fool to cross her in this state.

Interludes are scattered throughout, and these provide breathing room for Simz to reconnect with the shelter of her own thoughts. Disconnected from her arc, which edges nearer and nearer to stardom, 'Gems' sparks an argument between Simz's inner monologue and a marvelous choir of jovial chants. The backdrop sounds like a Disney soundtrack on crack, a far more fantastical world than the one Simz is often combing through. We quite literally fall deeper into this rabbit hole on 'The Rapper That Came To Tea', which evokes the garish acidity of an Alice in Wonderland-like world. But these never stray so far that avoid the cynicism of the LP. 'Never Make Promises' sours the immersion, slicing through the beyond-human fantasy with a reminder that nothing is promised. It's a harsh comedown.

Somewhere between one of the many transitions here, Simz snaps. Provoked by the woes of the world, she adapts accordingly. At times, it feels like she's showing off, eager to prove herself as the definitive talent of her generation. And when she's capable of sporting pastel-coloured pizzazz on par with Missy Elliot with 'Speed', who can contest her? Elsewhere, it's all too much. To suggest she caves from the pressure on 'Two Worlds Apart' isn't entirely true, but she secludes in a drug hut, floating high above the palpable problems that demand her attention, "Please don't tell my momma I've been smokin' marijuana". But, just like that, she snaps back with an inimitable prowess. Simz emerges from her chrysalis on 'Standing Ovation' as a brute with a fiery flow that could keep up with the very best, whereas 'Point and Kill' paints Simz as a go-getter without breaking a sweat.

Not a single song here is outrightly unpleasant, nor do the hiccups ever truly distract Simz, but there are moments that feel neglected by comparison. Where the highs, of which there are many, excel due to the bizarre geometry of a wealth of ideas, these pockets could use some more. For example, 'Little Q, Pt. 1' is an entire minute of teasing for a climax that doesn't materialise until a song later. 'I See You' attempts to retreat to the effervescent utopia of 'Two Worlds Apart' and lands, well, a world away. If it weren't so faint, the lack of frills sheathing Simz's admissions would make for some of the most emotionally gratifying material here. Simz maliciously roars atop distorted, mutated grime beats on 'Rollin Stone', the only thing that can ease her tense, nightmarish form is when she assumes the same minimalist, weedy tone.

The biggest adjustment Simz has made post-'GREY Area', besides the size of her projects, is the spread of styles she uses to fill them. And at nearly double the length, 'Sometimes I Might Be Introvert' finds space to employ more colour and more creativity. The most obscure moment here, 'Protect My Energy', is Simz's take on an introvert-friendly piece of synth-rock. The overtly saturated glitches that coil around her like the cuddle of a blanket wouldn't feel out of place on a Daft Punk record. Again, 'The Garden' reaches breathtaking cinematic heights. Despite the nudge of encouragement to cherish relationships, the gushing, strings dwarf her, creating a sense of isolation. But that isolation reminds you of the beauty of being alone, completely at peace with yourself.

It's an ongoing lesson that Simz fosters here. Still, as we learn, there are no happy endings, but that doesn't stop Simz from trying to reach one. 'Sometimes I Might Be Introvert' is as much a lesson of illustrating the broader horrors of the world as it is a journey of self-discovery. Hoisted by Simz's encyclopedic knowledge and burgeoning self-awareness, the two messages are never muddled. That crystal clear precision that runs throughout is in part why this feels more like a therapeutic exercise for Simbiatu Ajikawo, the woman behind the mask than it does a mere Little Simz album. And in the vigour of these discoveries, Simz makes so many radical notes that you start to see shades of yourself in the position of a candid introvert. You won't hold up as well as she does.

[NOW ON STREAMING] Various Artists- Romeo Must Die (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Posted: 03 Sep 2021 09:26 AM PDT

Jay Worthy x T.F collab album "The Ballad Of A Dope Head" drops next Thursday, 9/9. Entirely produced by Budgie.

Posted: 03 Sep 2021 12:48 PM PDT

Jay Worthy's IG announcement + cover art

I remember this project was supposed to drop a few years ago but I guess it got delayed and now they're dropping it after adding more tracks to it I think.

Here's the title track "Ballad Of A Dope Head" to give you a taste of what this whole project will sound like.

Jay Worthy and T.F also linked up on this track "Fully Auto". It's not from the upcoming project but it has the same vibe. If you like these tracks, you should def check out the project next week.

I peeped the producer, Budgie, on IG and he works with Alchemist so maybe he's a producer to keep an eye on for the future. I'm not too familiar with him currently.
