author Jia Tolentino on DJ Screw in her book Trick Mirror:

"chopped and screwed mimics the lean feeling- a heady and dissociative security, as if you're moving g very slowly toward a conclusion you don't need to understand. it induces a sense of permissive disorientation that melds perfectly to Houston, a place where a full day can pass without you ever seeming to get off the highway, where the caustic gleam of day time melts into a fluorescent polluted sunset and then into a long and swampy night. Chopped and screwed picking up something about Houston that connects impurity to absolution. It was its own imaginary freeway, oozing with syrup, defining the city's limits, bounding it like the Loop."

Music Style: Sensual Contemporary R&B with Pop appeal taking notes from Funk, Alternative R&B, and Dance-Pop styles

To be honest, I was nervous about checking out Victoria Monét's music. It stemmed from the fact that she initially started writing for other acts. I've noticed that when songwriters drop solo albums, they're mostly just filled with tracks written for other artists that weren't used. When I first heard Victoria's song, Experience, I was sold in regards to checking out her music. As I stated earlier, Victoria initially started out as a songwriter. Most of you all know that she often co-wrote songs for Ariana Grande such as Honeymoon Avenue, Only 1, December, Be Alright, Step On Up, Goodnight n Go, Thank U Next(She even performed the song alongside Ariana when she performed it on Ellen), Ghostin, Motive, My Hair, and Nasty. Victoria also wrote Do It (Chole x Halle's Ungodly Hour), Rather Be (Brandy's B7), Ice Cream (Blackpink's The Album), You Wouldn't Understand (Nas' Life is Good), Who You're Around (Meek Mill's Dreams and Nightmares), and No Way (Fifth Harmony's 7/27). What I like is that Victoria is able to keep her own solo material separate from what she writes for other artists.

Victoria's music fall predominantly within the Contemporary and Alternative R&B genres all while shining with pop appeal. Her more Alternative R&B side shines with songs like Cupid, All You Need, and High Luv. She also uses more Alternative Pop elements in More of You, Good Time X Trouble, and We Are the People. Victoria uses other elements such as mellow atmospheric sounds (No Good, Intro, Backyard, Touch Me), Disco Funk blends (Experience, Jaguar, When You Say You Love Me), Summer-like sounds (Love U Better, Do You Like It), and Rock (Wish I Never Met You). Even her Contemporary R&B tracks likes Ten New Friends, Water Fall Out of Love, Moment, Made in China, and Ass Like That are really good and well produced.

If you look at the lyrics of Victoria Monét's music, you will see why she co-wrote many songs for other artists. Her writing ability is really strong, she knows how to write a good hook and chorus. Look at the chorus of her song No Good

You'll say any and everything
So you can keep me in your space tonight
Every little teardrop
You just try to wipe off with one more of your lies
You'll say any and everything
So you can keep me in your space tonight/Every little teardrop
You just try to wipe off with one more of your lies

These line are not only good, but they really hit when she sings it. It just shows how good her writing and delivery is. Another song where I want to highlight her writing ability is Water Fall Out of Love. In the song, the chorus is

So if you can hear me now
Then baby, baby I hope that you cry your eyes out
You should cry until you make a river deep enough to motherfucking drown in
If you can hear me now
Cry your eyes out
So I can waterfall out of love

Honestly, with the way she sings this you cannot help but admire the lyrics. Victoria knows how to use her lyrics to perfectly capture a mood or feeling. Some more of her best lyrics can also be seen in Intro, Wish I Never Met You, Made in China, More of You. I also want to talk about her vocal ability. Victoria's singing voice is a light and soothing one that can shine on a sensual bedroom R&B track like Moment along with a glittery Disco-pop song like Experience. Her voice is very reminiscent of other female R&B singers like Sevyn Streeter, Chloe x Halle, Dawn Richard, and Mahalia. Specifically, her voice one that can work with full R&B sounds, Pop-R&B blended melodies, full on Pop tracks, and Throwback R&B styles. A few songs that showcase Victoria's vocal ability are Moment, Water Fall Out Of Love, See The Light, We Are the People, and Ready.

If you are interested in a moody Alternative R&B-Pop sound, go for her EP's Nightmares & Lullabies: Act 1 or Act 2. For something more of the Contemporary R&B-Pop sound, listen to Life After Love, Pt. 1 or Pt. 2. For sensual R&B-Pop with elements of Funk and Disco with a retro feel, check out the 1st installment of her Jaguar album.

Some of my favorite Victoria Monét songs: We Are the People, Made in China, Good Time x Trouble, High Luv, Cupid, More of You, 90's Babies, Wish I Never Met You, No Good, Water Fall Out of Love, Next Thing - Bet You Didn't Know, Ten New Friends, Do You Like It, Love U Better, Moment, Dive, Jaguar, Experience, Ass Like That, Go There With You, Touch Me

Here's a Spotify and Apple Music playlist for Victoria Monét

Here are some good performances: Jaguar (Live Session), Touch Me (Live), Moment (Live on Jimmy Kimmel), Be Alright (Live w/ Ariana Grande), Better Days (Live @ One Love Manchester)

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.
