[DISCUSSION] Gunna - WUNNA (One Year Later)

Posted: 23 May 2021 02:23 PM PDT

Wunna (stylized in all caps) is the second studio album by American rapper Gunna. It was released on May 22, 2020, by YSL Records and 300 Entertainment. The album features guest appearances from Young Thug, Nechie, Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch, and Travis Scott. The deluxe edition was released on July 24, it features additional guest appearances from Yak Gotti, Future, Nav, and Lil Uzi Vert.

Wunna received generally favorable reviews from critics and debuted atop the US Billboard 200, earning 111,000 album-equivalent units of which 4,000 were pure sales, becoming Gunna's first number-one album. It was supported by three singles: "Skybox", "Wunna", and "Dollaz on My Head".

"pull up in the trenches start a world war 6"

what does gunna know that we don't

i don't have anything to say about the album yet but today i learned that dude's real name is sergio giavanni kitchens and he chose to go by gunna/wunna? mans could have had a rockstar name smh

They spelled Roddy's name wrong on Spotify lmao

Travis verse is actually good. But the beat on Top Floor sounds like they competely just recycled the beat from Hot

Top Comments in [FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Thread

You can definitely hear the influence of his neighborhood and childhood friends on it

I'm biased cuz I fuck with the entire YSL crew's music but this was a REALLY enjoyable album. If you aren't a Gunna fan, this album isn't groundbreaking and won't change your mind but as someone who likes his shit, I'm thoroughly satisfied.

Drip or Drown 2 was in my top 10 most played albums last year and this is definitely an improvement, just ahead of DS3 as Gunna's best project. Like DoD2 there are barely any skips - 'Addys', 'Wunna' and 'Don't Play Around' haven't made it onto my playlist.

One of Gunna's main criticisms is 'he doesn't really do anything different' but there's plenty of innovation here. I love how he sampled his own song 'outstanding' on 'MOTW'. His switch up of flows on 'Gimmick' is ridiculous. The beat switch on 'Nasty Girls' is actually well thought through instead of abrupt.

A lot of it is driven by the remarkably good production. As the trap sound gets more stale, Wheezy's beats, at least for Gunna, are refreshing. 'Argentina', 'Rockstar Bikers and Chains' and 'Nasty Girl/On Camera' were some of my favourite beats.

Decent features, don't hear people talking about it but Thugga absolutely MURDERED 'Far'. Roddy did his thing and Travis with the high pitch autotune never misses.

Gunna is arguably the best in 'decent' rappers tier. He's not great or superstar material but his rhyme schemes, flow and delivery is exceptional. Lots of trap rappers - Rich the Kid, Lil Baby, DaBaby, Nav seem to make albums with random bunch of tracks thrown together but with DoD2 and this, there's a resemblance of direction. He's diversified his sound, next he needs to actually add substance to his vocals cuz HOLY SHIT the guy doesn't really say anything meaningful at all.

Fav tracks: Dollaz on My Head, Gimmick, Nasty Girls/On Camera, Rockstar Bikers and Chains, Met Gala, Do Better

As someone who wasn't a fan of Gunna before and found Drip or Drown 2 trash, I actually loved this album. His changed his cadence on this album way more than in DoD2 in which i found his voice drab and monotone and even though he didn't experiment with the flow too much, he made subtle changes which kept me interested. Fucking love the way he slid over the beats as well. Was smooth as hell.

Loved the tropical summery vibe of the album too and a lot of credit has to go to the producers on this thing because the something about the album just felt aesthetically pleasing.

Couple things I think could've been better were that there were songs on the album that didn't really fit the theme. Tracks like Rockstar Bikers and Chains and Top Floor are great but they don't really fit the album aesthetically. He could've added those as a deluxe or something. Also I'd love to see a bit more experimentation. Most tracks on this album are in his lane which isn't so bad but maybe in the future we could get some progression. Would love to see maybe an R&B Gunna since he has a smooth ass voice. I think it could fit well.

Favourite tracks on first listen were argentina, motw, dollaz on my head, skybox, met gala, nasty girl/on camera, Top floor (as an individual track) and Cooler than a Bitch

[DISCUSSION] Kota the Friend - Everything (One Year Later)

Posted: 23 May 2021 02:26 PM PDT

Top Comments in [FRESH] Thread

Wow this is great so far, big jump in production compared to the more bare-bones stuff he's made in the past. Long Beach is my favorite so far

this intro is absolutely hitting rn, Kota is so underrated

That kyle verse is actually so nice. His flow is pretty clean

Mans been popping on HH twitter, hopefully this is the one to push him into the light

Top Comments in [FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Thread

Kota has found what works for him, and he sticks to it. He has a great ear for beats and he's a solid lyricist. I've loved each of his last three projects, but I personally prefer the brevity of Lyrics to Go over this one. I will also say I'm really happy to see him start to get the attention from online spaces he deserves. Hopefully he continues to grow in popularity, rap needs more people like him in the community right now. Dope project.

This was my first Kota project and I enjoyed it. It's very bright happy music which fits the theme about love and whatnot. Wasn't the biggest fan of his flow but it's serviceable.

This album is what I wanted Chance's project to sound like, definitely gave me happy spring time vibes.

Honestly I can see why most people who listened to this as their first Kota project enjoyed it but as someone who's followed him for a few years, I can honestly say I've never seen an artist have such minimal artist growth like him.

I get the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" mentality but so much of his shit sounds the same now. There was some tracks I really liked like the intro but other that it's what you'd expect from a Kota project. Wouldn't he surprised if he comes out with the same type of still videos for it as well, it's just boring now

I really enjoyed it, might be his most consistent work to date. Kota stays delivering some good ass vibes. I liked the production too, but whoever produced it got kinda horny with the gross beat (I think that's what it is, any actual producers reading this can correct me if I'm wrong). All in all I'm happy with it, I'm still not a fan of skits but there's only two of em so it's not a deal breaker. Gonna be bumping this all summer.

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

[DISCUSSION] J Cole - The Off Season (1 Week Later)

Posted: 21 May 2021 07:37 PM PDT

There's been more time to sit with this. Thoughts?

Personally, this album just gets better with every listening. J Cole has improved in his rapping ability, the bars on this project is insane. I'm not sure if I can say it's best project but it's very solid. This adds to his discography well.
