[DISCUSSION] Ab-Soul - Longterm Mentality (10 Years Later)

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 03:06 PM PDT

Longterm Mentality is the debut studio album by American hip hop recording artist Ab-Soul. It was released on April 5, 2011, by Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), exclusively to digital retailers, serving as Ab-Soul's debut retail release. The album features guest appearances from Jhené Aiko, Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, Punch, Alori Joh, JaVonté, MURS, BJ the Chicago Kid and Pat Brown, with the production from American hip hop record producers such as Tae Beast, Ayiro, Sounwave, AAyhasis, Context, Alexis Carrington and Tommy Black. Upon its release, the album received was highly acclaimed by music critics.

Background

Preceded by the mixtapes such as Longterm: The Mixtape (2009) and Longterm 2: Lifestyles of the Broke and Almost Famous (2010), Ab-Soul stated Longterm Mentality is not the third installment in his Longterm series. In July 2010, in an interview with Complex, Stevens claimed the series would have four installments, "When I did the first Longterm I knew that there would be four of them. When I did the first one. So there will be four of them: Longterm 1, 2, 3, and 4. So right now we're at two. You'll have to wait for the next one. That's for the next Ab-Soul interview." In August 2011, in an interview with BlowHipHopTV, Ab-Soul explained in spite of the fact that Longterm Mentality is not a part of the series, all three projects paint a picture of his personal life and growth. While speaking with BlowHipHopTV, the Black Hippy member said that the project is intended to introduce listeners to the man behind the mic:

I wanted to do something to where all of my supporters and people that's following me could actually witness the entire growth of the whole situation. So Longterm was just an introduction. Longterm 2 was more personal about where I was at with it in my life at that particular time. Longterm Mentality is pretty much an overview of the whole idea. I'm trying to capture my life and the essence of what I aspire to do in this business.

RYM Review

Ab-Soul doesn't have the best flow and doesn't have the ability to amaze with a technically proficient lyrical showcasing, but he has an honest vision and knows how to deliver his message. It's refreshing to hear a rapper that isn't interested in the bullshit of the flashy rapper lifestyle while also being miles away from being boring or political. Longterm Mentality is a good album to put on if you want to think.

Brooklyn drill and sextuplet flows

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 02:38 PM PDT

I've recently been getting into drill music. Listened to some Chiraq drill, worked my way through London drill and am now getting to Brooklyn. I'm absolutely in love with the style. I recently discovered Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow and the flows they're working with are blowing my mind. We're all familiar with triplets flows (a.k.a. the 'Versace' flow) popularized by trap music and going back all the way to the Memphis rap scene, but while listening to this absolute banger, I was wondering what made that flow sound so good and I noticed something: they were using sextuplet flows, or more accurately, going back and forth between normal triplet flows and sextuplet flows.

You may be wondering what the difference is since they're mathematically equivalent, and any verse written for a triplet flow can be re-phrased into a sextuplet flow (and vice verse). They have completely different feels however, and the difference lies in how frequently beats are accented. Triplets are 1 accent per 3 beats, sextuplets are 1 accent per 6 beats. This gives sextuplet flows a lengthier, more 'falling'/'stumbling' feel vs triplet flows which have a more 'tumbling'/'rolling' feel. I was wondering if anyone knows the origins of this unique flow pattern. I believe Kendrick uses it at one point on 'Alright'. And while we're at it, is anyone doing quintuplet flows? 7-tuplet flows? 9-tuplet flows? Any kind of tuplet flows?

[DISCUSSION] PARTYNEXTDOOR - PARTYMOBILE (One Year Later)

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 11:42 AM PDT

Partymobile is the third studio album by Canadian singer PartyNextDoor. It was released on March 27, 2020, by OVO Sound and Warner Records.

Release and promotion

In November 2019, PartyNextDoor announced his third studio album would be released in January 2020. The album's release was then pushed back to February. The album was delayed for a second time before being released to streaming services on March 27, 2020.

Commercial performance

Partymobile debuted at number eight on the US Billboard 200 chart, earning 50,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. This became Party's second US top-ten debut.

I been missing that "p p p p party...party" intro

Still mad about the cover art, Club Atlantis' one was the GOAT

Can't wait to listen to this by myself and think about the relationships I never had

Wow I missed Rihanna

The Rihanna track is a fucking hit, would've really gone off at spring parties but oh well 😔

Loving this so far, I'm probably biased because I fucking love dark/atmospheric R&B, you gotta really fuck up for me not to like it but I think Party got him a good one with this. Hoping it stays good throughout til the end. Even Loyal has grown on me over time (didn't like it at all at first).

Top Comments in First Impressions thread

Going into this album, despite being a huge PND fan, I just had a feeling this was going to be a letdown. Between The Weeknd's album just further cementing his spot as the better artist and the awful rollout, I just had a bad feeling about it.

That being said, this album pleasantly surprised me. There were a good chunk of great songs on this, that really nailed exactly why I and many others listen to PND, like Savage Anthem, PGT, The News, and Trauma. There were definitely some misses, and some weird decisions (why was there no drop on Showing You?).

Overall though, although it was no P1, it was a pretty solid album. 6.5-7/10.

I think it's better than his last project. I liked them all from the first time I heard them.

I really fuck with another day nobody is talking about that song

Really really enjoying this. Probably because not huge expectations and haven't listened to much before. 'Turn on' is amazing, as is 'trauma' 'split decision' and 'another day'. Too 3 of the year so far with Big Conspiracy and Eternal Atake

I'm convinced I listened to an entirely different album than you lot because I thought this was solid, nothing amazing but pretty much what I expected from him. He's still got the darl ambient R&B vibes plus his newfound love for Latin Pop gives it a much needed spice. Solid record that's getting undeserved hate that I don't get.

Top Comments in Pitchfork Thread

There's a running joke that PARTYNEXTDOOR only gets to release music once Drake passes on his records. If that's true, Drake is doing him a favor by standing in his way, because almost every PARTYNEXTDOOR song would sound better if he weren't the one singing.

Jesus Christ that's one way to start a review

Knew it was alphonse pierre by the way that review started, jfc, although i have to agree with him here. Partynextdoor's never been the best singer but his vocals always sounded amazing over his own production in the self titled trilogy and a few other songs; now his vocals sound muddy and uninspired(why does he think his rapping like young thug sounds good?) for the most part, not to mention how wack his lyrics got at some points(how many fucking times did he repeat that FaceTime line?) Did Drake and RiRi really take all of this man's best writing?

And his production-what in the world happened? He hasn't been the only one to produce his own music for a while now but aside from the opening track he really took a backseat on PARTYMOBILE. In some ways this turned out well on vibey tracks like The News and Split Decision(aside from pnd sounding like his verse was phoned in from the bottom of Lake Ontario), and Trauma and Eye On It reminded me of Not Nice and Only You, two great afrobeat tracks from P3. However, for the most part this led to messes like Touch Me(again wtf was with that FaceTime line?) The same vocals problem occurred on Never Again, also produced by Alex Lustig where the beat was nice but pnd's verses sounded like they were phoned in on a blackberry.

Savage Anthem feels like an exception from the album. What an amazing song. I feel like Pierre really nailed the spot by pointing out the detail pnd goes into and how he makes great songs that way- party washing his dick off and a smell arising in the living room really paints some kind of picture. The production is insanely good, just a simple loop and snap that somehow sounds better and captures the late night driving "mobile" vibe better than the rest of the album combined. The choir and vocals at the end are transcendent of everything else on the album.

However, when the best song on an album is a year old leak(and given the song's references to Kehlani and Kyrie, possibly 4 years old), that just goes to show how much party has declined. I'd love to think he still has it in him to make great songs like Recognize(and all of P1-colors-P2 and much of P3) but I just don't see how after this is what he came up with after a 3 year hiatus. "Don't hold your breath" continues to resonate inside whatever is left of my brain but aside from that Pierre hit the spot.

-A disappointed pnd stan

"...will probably rack up streams at an Applebees looking for white noise."

This has summed up PND since 2016 for me. I remember waiting for PX3 to drop, throwing it on and it even sounded stale and boring back in 2016. It's hard for me to understand why ppl still cape for this guy. The amount of hype for Partymobile on this sub was so wild to me.

PND is so uninteresting vocally that i can't get into it whatsoever. It just feels like background music with an islander tinge on a few songs. Other than that i agree that he sounds like a darker sounding Khalid and think writing is probably has always been his strong suit. pnd feels like he shoulda blow up 5 years ago or so and the fact that he hasn't kinda shows that his music has been pretty one note and replaceable as far as his vocals.

FREDDIE GIBBS IS CONQUERING HIP HOP ON HIS OWN TERMS: GRAMMY or no GRAMMY, Freddie Gibbs is triumphant. The Indiana-hailing rapper talks working with Madlib, Nipsey Hussle, and the upcoming 'best produced album of his career' (Pharrell, Madlib, Mike-Will, Alc, Hit-Boy, Working on Dying, Sevn Thomas)

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 01:18 PM PDT

MixMag

On Losing the Grammy

After a carnivorous 16 years sculpting an inning from the depths of rap's underbelly, Freddie Gibbs, whose grin could light up even the darkest of black holes, is buoyant about his recent 'Best Rap Album' GRAMMY loss last month. "I'm coming off of the GRAMMYs week, you know I'm blessed, a lot of things are going well right now," he says. The extent of Gibbs' gratitude is felt somehow, beyond our Zoom call, from across the Atlantic.

Even when addressing his victor — rap behemoth Nas — he continues to demonstrate an instant aura of positivity. "If you're gonna lose to somebody, you're gonna want to lose to Nas," he shrugs, evidently motivated by the loss. "Nas is a hall of fame MC. If anything it just shows how great I am to lose to such an MC. I could've lost to Macklemore or something."

Despite getting it "wrong" that year and after a turbulent 2020, involving multiple claims of corruption — one by popstar The Weeknd and former CEO Deborah Dugan (Deborah described the Recording Academy as a "boys' club" and voting "ripe with corruption") — Gibbs is still able to find faith in the Recording Academy's ecosystem, as it pertains to his contemporary career at least. "I don't really feel no way because [loads of] people trash the GRAMMYs when they don't get nominated, but then they wear the tuxedos and shit when they do get nominated. At the end of the day it was good for my career, so I'm gonna participate of course."

On the album

The self-proclaimed 'Big Boss Rabbit' (if his latest Nas and Mike Tyson-referenced single is anything to go by) is fuelled by all of his discography to date, he's quick to list an impressive initial round of producers set to star across the upcoming 'SSS' (he won't reveal what it means just yet) album. "It's another album of the year. I'm about to go and work with Pharrell next week. Madlib, Working On Dying, The Alchemist, Sevn Thomas, Hit-Boy, I just talked to [Mike Will Made It]. It's gonna be the best produced album that I ever made." Gibbs is cognisant of the lane he occupies now — he's an artist that provides holistic bodies of work. With comrades and hip hop mavens such as Benny The Butcher, Kenny Beats and Ebro Darden routinely emphasising his consistency in the curation domains.

Outside of sonics, Gibbs is compelled to delve into his artistic storytelling more — he stays abreast with hip hop and its evolution through social media. "When rappers get to 30, some get bored, some aren't inspired anymore," he says. But on 'SSS', he's adamant about staying competitive and shedding more of himself as it pertains to fatherhood, vowing to be transparent on balancing the dynamics of co-parenting as a father Freddie Jr. and Irie. Here, he's combating ageism in hip hop with wisdom and expertise.

On Nipsey

"With [Nipsey Hussle] that was so scary. To be at such a height of your career," Freddie Gibbs sighs, clearly taken aback by the loss 24 months later. "We're gonna keep thuggin' it out for him though."

On working w Madlib

"I think I'm the best ever to rap on a Madlib beat," he states without an ounce of hesitation nor restraint in his statement. As he realises what he's just said however, he again shows the utmost respect for DOOM in particular, whom the world formally paid their respects to on December 31 of last year upon learning of his October 31 passing. "Rest in peace to MF DOOM. I feel like he gave me the measuring stick. He set the tone. When I was making 'Piñata', everyone was talking about how he did the best shit and you know the competitor in me wanted to make the better album."

On being a father

"My kids are a blessing," he gushes. "But [co-parenting] can be difficult. My son's mother in particular. When you have a baby with someone that's not in love with you and you are not in love with them, it's hard." Freddie Gibbs also shares that he doesn't believe in monogamy and hasn't for years. "The women that I had children with don't even rock with that idea, so it's hard." Gibbs will always be a present father - he vows to that very sternly on our Zoom - but his liberal approach to relationships is a dynamic he's had to remain transparent about, especially as he enters new encounters with women. "All of this is a life lesson for me. This is all for the children though, but I don't know if I'm built for conventional relationships."

[DISCUSSION] Wiz Khalifa - Rolling Papers (10 Years Later)

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 10:10 AM PDT

Rolling Papers is the third studio album by American rapper Wiz Khalifa. It was released on March 29, 2011, by Atlantic Records and Rostrum Records. It is his first album under a major label after his independent releases, Show and Prove and Deal or No Deal. The album features guest appearances from Too $hort, Curren$y and Chevy Woods. Rolling Papers was supported by five singles: "Black and Yellow", "Roll Up", "On My Level", "No Sleep" and "The Race". The album has been noted by music writers for having a pop rap style.

Rolling Papers debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, with first-week sales of 197,000 copies in the United States. The album has been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for combined sales and album-equivalent units of two million units. Upon its release, the album received generally mixed reviews from music critics, who complimented its hooks, but criticized its subject matter.

Background

Following the release of his independent second album, Deal Or No Deal, Khalifa released his mixtape Kush & Orange Juice, which immediately became widely praised as one of the best hip hop mixtapes of 2010. After generating buzz from the mixtape, Khalifa not only won MTV's "Hottest Breakthrough Hip Hop Artist of 2010" award, but he also became the center of a bidding war between various labels, including Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group label. He also came to the attention of fellow rapper Drake, who offered him the chance to co-headline his album tour. After declining both rapper's offers, he announced that he was signing with Atlantic Records live on July 30 on MTV's "RapFix 34 Live," and confirmed that he had begun work on his debut on the label.[10] His first official single, "Black and Yellow", produced by Stargate, became one of the highest selling hip hop singles of 2010, eventually selling over two million digital downloads.

Title significance

On January 26, 2011, Wiz announced the album's title and release date via Ustream.tv. According to Wiz, there are three different meanings behind the Rolling Papers title.

It's an appropriate title. It's called Rolling Papers, like the papers that you roll, the papers that I roll, the papers that we smoke. But it's deeper than that too. I thought of this before I even started recording the album and before it was a full idea. It's not just about the weed thing. It's bigger than that. My career really took off when I started smoking papers.

The second reason I called it Rolling Papers is when I left Warner Bros., I sort of got my 'rolling papers.' I got my contract, fucking rolled up, and smoked. And I was able to walk and I was able to leave and I was able to do my thing and I was able to capitalize off that. So that's another pair of papers that I really needed in my life and days.

The third reason why I named it Rolling Papers, I quit writing a long time ago. I stopped physically writing it down or putting it in my BlackBerry or iPhone. I write notes down, but I don't write whole verses, so it was like saying goodbye to the paper. The paper's rolling out too. So everything is real natural. The first thing that came to my head is how I really, really feel. I feel like this is my most natural sound. I paid the most attention to this shit when I did it. I was real focused. I was real keyed in on this shit when I was working on it and I didn't use any paper, except for [the rolling papers].

Top Comments in 10th Anniversary Edition thread

I remember seeing Wiz hot off this & Mac off Best Day Ever back in college. What a show. Going to have to give this a relisten.

First album I physically bought because my mom allowed my sister and I to pick one album each for our yearly road trip..

My father hated it after the first song and then we listened to Taylor Swift.

The official 10th anniversary date is on Sunday, but it came out today (for streaming purposes obviously)

If you're only familiar with Wiz' mainstream songs, give #7 "The Race" a listen. Some of ID Labs / E. Dan's best work right there.

I'm on my level is one of those select songs engrained in my memory haha, can't believe it's been 10 years

[DISCUSSION] dvsn - SEPT. 5TH (5 Years Later)

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 01:51 PM PDT

Sept. 5th (stylized as SEPT. 5TH) is the debut studio album by Canadian R&B duo dvsn, released on March 27, 2016 by OVO Sound and Warner Bros. Records. The album's production was handled primarily by Nineteen85, assisted by Noël Cadastre and Stephen Kozmeniuk.

Top Comments from First Impressions Thread

The album is fantastic. Do It Well is so heartfelt, both In ÷ Out and Sept. 5th are fantastic, and the vocals on Angela are angelic. The whole project is very consistent throughout and is such an emotional experience. I'm going to be listening to this for a long time and really look forward to what they put out next.

Absolutely beautiful. Ever since "With Me" was played on OVO Sound Radio I was instantly hooked, I had been waiting for something like this for so long. With Me, Too Deep, Hallucinations, Angela, The Line are my absolute favourites from the album. This will definitely be in my top of 2016 list. Nineteen85 is an incredibly talented producer, every song on this project is amazing and Daniel Daley really nailed it with the vocals, he has a unique voice that works really well for their sound. They seem to be the perfect mix of old/traditional R&B and the new 'OVO Sound' that has been becoming increasingly saturated. Great debut from a great duo, excited for what they do next.

my favourite track is Hallucinations, the whole album has a early 2000's rnb vibe to it with the distinct toronto sound coming through, in my opinion a drake feature would've ruined the feel of the album (coming from a huge drake stan) everything these guys drop has been a hit and no misses, i see them blowing up very soon the same way that Weeknd did. overall really nice project 8.5/10 A1 RnB

I can't handle In + Out and Angela. Makes me think of so much shit. Been listening to the album over and over since release though

I think the big thing about dvsn that sets them apart from other Toronto and OVO artists is the songwriting. Lyrically, it's actually quite poetic and poignant and sort of beautiful. You actually feel struck by what is being sung, not relying solely on the vocals. Also, dvsn' singer isn't a perfect singer, which adds a lot of character. This was an excellent project

Top Comments in P4k BNM Review

I was not expecting to like this as much as I did. I really was not a fan of the Majid Jordan LP, and figured this would be more of the same. But it was actually quite refreshing.

Do It Well has been on repeat since I started listening to it, easily my favourite off the album.

I hope this gives them more exposure, everything they've made is fantastic

Loving this album front to back. Like another user said, something about it is very refreshing. Haven't been enjoying all the sounds that come out of OVO/Toronto but I've been listening to this project a ton lately. Really glad to see them getting some love.

Album blew me away with how good it was. That intro is 10/10

I've been seeing a lot of positive buzz around this release and the BNM does not surprise me. People say this is doomed to not gain the exposure it deserves given the track record of previous OVO releases that are not Drake.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why is X artist higher than Y artist on the 200 chart, even though X artist sold less?

A: This is because of a discrepancy between Billboard's ranking and the ranking from the website that the sales data is scraped from

Q: Where do you get the sales data from?

A: https://hitsdailydouble.com/sales_plus_streaming

Q: What does "err" mean on the 200 chart?

A: If you are seeing "err", that means that the bot I use to gather chart data couldn't identify sales data for a particular album because of a difference in album naming between Billboard and HitsDailyDouble
