If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

In Defense of Earl Sweatshirt's "East" (and his overall direction)

I'm a pretty big Earl fan and the response to his new musical direction (post-IDLTSIDGO) has interested me. While some aren't on board with it, understandably so, my respect for Earl as an artist has grown with each release. Admittedly, FEET OF CLAY has, overall, been my least favorite Earl project. It's not bad, but it contains some of my least favorite verses from him. It also contains some gems, some of my favorite verses. 74 (relentless crazy flow/rhyme scheme), East (as per title), Mtomb, OD, Ghost & Whole World contain some impressive verses. The single most important thing in understanding art or an artistic movement is context. So I'll provide some to show how impressive East really is:

Earl's writing has become increasingly cryptic and poetic, his rhyme schemes more unorthodox, more asymmetrical (but also covertly intricate). Before, Earl seemed primarily concerned with technique, his rhyme schemes dense and patterned, easily identifiable by the ear. Now his flows are looser, more abstract. He doesn't emphasize his rhymes as much but they're still there. During my first couple of listens of IDLSIDGO, I remember feeling vaguely disappointed that Earl's rhymes weren't as dense and technical as they used to be. It wasn't until later listens I realized his rhyme schemes were still there, it was just less obvious. I credit this to two things:

  1. His flow has become more laid-back (somehow), more spoken-word like, and this delivery doesn't vocally-privilege rhymes over non-rhymes as much. They don't land directly on the ear as rhymes.
  2. The way he rhymes has changed. I feel like Earl bored of his traditional rhyme-density, seeing as he'd proven he was a technical wizard ("Whoa" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anRkutaPS9w for proof). Like a lot of artists, after technical mastery comes experimentation. Borders are pushed. His raps at first tended more head than heart. As in, they were intellectual flexes rather than emotionally-driven. Earl showing off how, as a teenager, he could out-rap most in terms of pure technique. And secondly, he uses slant rhymes with increasing frequency. Whereas before maybe he'd rhyme "kraken/cracking", now it'd be "topic/conscious." 'Topic' and 'conscious' don't seem to immediately rhyme, but they share a phoneme, that 'o' sound. He's not rhyming words as much as he is syllables. He's gone deeper. He does still definitely still have direct rhymes, as he is a rapper, but they are of a lesser proportion than they used to be, with slant rhymes being used more. This yields a lot of room for assonance rather than direct rhymes.

Another thing about the increased cryptic-ness of his writing, the strangeness of his beat-selection, and why he'd go in that direction. Earl once said he considers IDLSIDGO as his first real album, despite it being his second. I speculate this is because he matured as an artist. He realized that he wanted to write from the heart, not just from the head. And also, he realized the importance of the unity between form and content (beats and lyrics). Beats were to be mood-driven, contextually appropriate to the lyrics. In IDLSIDGO, the beats are dark and gloomy, evoking the generally depressive energy of the album. SRS' beats are harder to link to a specific emotion, but they have a texture, a mood. They make me feel like I'm in Earl's head. They pull me into his mind-state. This is evidenced most obviously on Peanut (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NoWhrIll90), where Earl's primarily rapping about the death of his father. The beat is heavy, disturbing, depressed. It's like Kendrick's "u." Like we're inside Earl's stream-of-consciousness. His writing has an increased interiority to it. And if someone is to truly evince what it's like to be in their head, which is a singularly unique experience, their self-expression will necessarily become more idiosyncratic and strange. The more specific, the more universal (this aphorism doesn't work on the extremes).

When groups are bundled into a specific domain, they start to develop inside jokes, shared tics, slang etc. Their unity, the boundary separating them from everyone else, is symbolized by this 'secret language' with it's own rules and vocabulary. This works nationally (British English vs Australian English, regionally (Londoner dialect vs Liverpudlian dialect), all the way down to microcosms (neighborhoods, subreddits, friend groups, best friends, etc.) This secret language symbolizes and reinforces boundaries between them and us, whoever them/us may be. Phenomenologically speaking, the most fundamental boundary separating us from them is the ego-boundary. I am consciously me and not everything else that is outside me. And so within one's consciousness there is a sort of slang, symbolic psychodynamics wholly unique to the owner of the ego, a secret language that marks a boundary between myself and everything else outside me. If one wishes to use self-expression to indicate this, their output will be similarly cryptic, coded, wholly unto one's self. Earl's writing increasingly reflects this. We are tourists in Earl's mind, and it'll take time and effort to understand his peculiar regional dialect. Some things we'll never figure out.

Okay, before I break down some of what Earl's doing on East, one last point: the beat. I don't think there's much I can do here. Personally, I don't mind it. It's a hypnotic loop that almost fades away to leave Earl's lyrics to take center stage. Though I understand if, despite the impressive lyrics, you cannot get past the beat.

The magic of dissection, for me, only generally comes when I re-listen to the song. On paper, with all the pieces dismantled and on the table, it's hard to see how it links the whole. When listening to it with new context, new ears, one realizes the dynamics and depth of everything that Earl's doing.

Now onto the lyrics. Notice how Earl strings together words with the 'o' syllable. 'O' like 'bottle' or 'topic' or 'conscious.'

We have the 'o' sound, which actually continues for most of this verse: collard, off, top, bottle, fondle, holla, not, mama, Harden, gaudy, followers, lost, consequently, caught

And secondmost, we have the 'ee' sound: weed, greens, me, glee, D, weak, peak, me, consequently, feelings, GF

We have some internals, with the 'a' sound: back, racks, fat, cap, flashin', grandmama

These lines are actually quite dense with rhymes, but because of the asymmetric flow, his laid-back delivery, and the slant-ness of the rhymes, it doesn't sound as dense as it actually is.

I can't get into all the meanings of the lines, but two stick out (one I actually just figured while typing this, despite having listened to this so much).

Off top was me, no cap, I don't bottle things

Clever wordplay. Notice the conceptual continuity between "off top" "cap" and "bottle." They all cluster around the concept of a bottle.

"Off Top" was also a song from Earl's previous album, IDLSIDGO. "Off top" in terms of slang can mean saying something truthfully or in an off-the-cuff manner.

"No cap" in slang terms, means... not sure how to explain it. I know what it means, but I'm not American. As per Urban Dictionary: "when someone writes "no cap," it "basically means that they're not lying or 'capping' like they did something." Again, this has conceptual continuity with the slang meaning of 'off top.'

I don't bottle things = I don't suppress my emotions. You put this whole line together and it's crazy clever what he's saying and how he's saying it. The bottle has no cap (the top is off) because his emotions are free to flow: Off top was me, no cap, I don't bottle things

Flats and grandmama rings on the fingers that fondle the thing

This line I just figured out while typing. Earl's grandma died some years back, and it's something that often weighs on him. We can see the journey through his lyrics. On Burgundy, he raps:

My grandma's passing,

But I'm too busy trying to get this album crackin' to see her

The key to the East line is a lyric from Solace, one of my favorite projects from Earl:

I got my grandmama's hands,

I start to cry when I see 'em

Because they remind me of seeing her

By Earl saying on East, by mentioning 'grandmama rings' and 'the fingers' I think he's talking about how his hands look like his grandmother's. As in, when he says 'the fingers' he's referring to himself, musing about her death.

There's a lot more I can say about the lyrics, but I'll stop here. Earl's rhyme and flow is really quite something. He resurrects rhymes mid-way through a sentence and just generally places them in these odd pockets, with many internals.

More evidence of the 'o' sound throughout the verse: bar, long, lost, exhaust, strong. And then after some bars later he brings it back again with gone, macabre, pop, cards, hard, star, cognitive, etc.

Also notice how, later in the verse, when he says:

The trip was long as steep

My innocence was lost in East

This is the same compound-rhyme scheme from earlier when he says:

This rhyme scheme, which wasn't continued for a few lines, is suddenly resurrected lines later. He does this all over the song. There are so many more internal rhymes and phonemes he weaves through the song. He's doing something very unique and interesting with his flow, I think. And that monstrous technique, which some people feel may have been sacrificed in the name of experimentation, is still there. Consuming art is "straining to listen." If it's good art, the more effort you put in, the more strain, the more you get out of it.

I loved Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor and The Cool, but it seems like after he was forced to put out Lasers, he's made his lyrics so cryptic to the point where trying to decode the meaning can just be exhausting. Does anyone else feel the same way about not just Lupe, but any rappers who use this cryptic style of lyricism? Maybe I'm just getting old lol

Booba, the greatest French rapper of all time, released his last album yesterday. A retrospective.

Booba (aka B2O, Kopp and the DUC), born Élie Yaffa in 1976, released his last album ULTRA yesterday, culminating a very interesting 26 year career at the zenith of French rap, spanning hits, controversies, feuds, and a legend unparalleled across Europe. 2.3 million albums sold, 11 Diamond singles, and countless certifications support the DUC's case as the French GOAT.

As a breakdancer in the 1990s, Booba only wanted one thing: easy money, which for him always meant freedom. In 1994, he meets Ali, and they form undergoing gangster rap duo Lunatic a la Mobb Deep, releasing their first album Mauvais Œil in 2000, widely considered a classic with absolute bangers such as Pas l'Temps Pour Les Regrets (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSsIVuTmnto) and Le son qui met la pression (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJYCHHcUBsE) after Booba spent 18 months in prison after robbing a taxi.

In 2002 Booba releases his first solo album Temps Mort, another classic with the absolute hip hop masterclass in Repose en Paix (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD1-Vt3dkk4) and small hit Destinée (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF9nuwh9_8c) that went on to go in rap radio Skyrock, the biggest in France. Temps Mort is a classic and perhaps even the best French rap album of all time, and has a gold certification.

2004 saw B2O release number one album Panthéon, certified gold with 100k sales (now sitting in 260k) with somber intro Tallac (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnRLcydHU9I) and hit N10 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZmCwtYk98A) as highlights. A big critical success and a very very good album as well. In 2005 he dropped his mixtape Autopsie Vol. 1 with features from Ali.

His first platinum certification came in 2006 when Booba gave the world classic Ouest Side with features from Akon and Mac Tyler. Hits include Pitbull (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDCSl9CFaNM) is one of the most poetic songs ever, as it denounces the racism of the times, Boulbi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uczY1We-Eak) and Garde la Peche (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JaTztqeUDs). This album has now 500k sales, which in today's terms would be equivalent to a diamond album. He then released Autopsie Vol. 2.

During this epoch Booba was regarded as a hardcore gangster hip hop artist, while rarely participating in high profile feuds. This was about to change.

But first, Booba dropped his fourth studio album 0.9 which debuted with only 17k sales first week and was panned by critics and the general public for his use of autotune, something never donde before. The year is 2008. No real highlights here, my personal favorites would be B2oBa (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8a_NiQRocY), where he clashes rap legends NTM, IAM and MC Solaar (his only real competition in the GOAT race). Autopsie Vol. 3 followed*.*

In 2009 superstar rapper Rohff (who I honestly think sucks but whatever) said some stuff against Booba, which would span the biggest beef in French rap history. Them guys is still going to this day lmao, but at the beginning Rohff never said anything really evil.

With the intention of dropping yet another classic Booba drops Lunatic in 2010*,* with the tune Comme une étoile (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jeheiDpD0c) selling 200k units, while also being a first week number one album. Autopsie Vol. 4 was next, and it contains a kinda romantic song Scarface (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypU6RHVb_Gw) which was a huge risk at the time, but 32 million views and 20 million Spotify streams prove this was a great success for the now all time great Booba.

By 2012 Booba announces Futur, his next album, after dropping first single Wesh Morray (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhRWM-K5TD8). The aforementioned Rohff took the song personally as he thought it was addressed to him and responded with Wesh Zoulette (which means prostitute/bitch) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VpHcjzw01c) and he actually ratiod Booba in views lmao. Booba declared it wasn't for Rohff but the damage was done. Second single Caramel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiC5SeRfLYw) dropped, and after that the album released, charting at number one and selling 300k units since its release, a triple platinum album. Highlights include Maitre Yoda (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFNEBA8sLJ0), Pirates (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWRu8gj1Qdc), Tombé pour elle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35FbLhYG86M) and Kalash (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBbHo8b4FDc) featuring (remember the name) newcomer Kaaris. This album features 2Chainz and Rick Ross. A deluxe version of the album dropped in 2013, with new songs including diss track against star rapper Lafouine AC Milan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt_mfcf0ztg) where he accused him of peadophile and claiming he would be the only one remaining at the end of their careers.

Now, it's been almost 17 years and Booba is still going really strong, remaining relevant with his DUC whisky, UNKUT (which would later become DCNDT) clothes branding and constant beef with other famous rappers, as well as his own label 92i, in honor of his municipality number. 2014 saw him drop loosie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHuU-rvWsaY) where he sub dissed everyone he had beef with. By this year Booba started clashing with former protege Kaaris, which featured in hit Kalash.

In 2015 Booba dropped his worst album: DUC. Single OKLM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpXSed8yVSI) went number one, and spawned OKLM radio which saw many famous new rappers rise in fame. OKLM means let's be calm and has since incrusted itself as a common expression of French lingo. Highlights include 3G (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6cxvhzcSZk) and Tony Sosa (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PDST8XQH9Q). Future is on the record but the song is ass tbh.

We are now entering the streaming era, and when I speak of numbers I want you guys to multiply by ten the French numbers to estimate what it is equal to in US numbers. For instance, mega hits Au DD by PNL and Banda Organisé by JuL or even Réseaux by Niska are all some of the biggest hits ever and are all over 100 M streams in Spotify. This songs are God's Plan level, which means, once again, multiply the number by ten. All streams are Spotify numbers.

Eight studio album Nero Nemesis, dropped in December 2015 and was an incredible success, while only charting at number 7. Considered to be his last classic, it gave us Validé (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWftfp5cLCk) 40M views and streams and absolute hit 92iVeyron (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwtLqJyhS3Q) 80M views and 45M streams, his first certified single, and first Diamond one the highest certification, Pinocchio (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXewKWKvva8) featuring Damso, new 92i signee, who would become an absolute superstar in a case similar to The Weeknd and Drake. If I were to recommend an album of Booba it would be this one. Absolute masterclass.

After a couple of features in two diamond singles, Booba dropped his biggest hit DKR (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Stet_4bnclk),in 2016 with 90M views and 60M streams, it is a banger for the ages.

2017 gave us Booba's Trone, with diamond tracks Petite fille (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHuo2pIyTH8) and Friday (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WpLtZNafzU). The album leaked and still managed to sell 66k first week only on streams, going number one easily. While not that well recieved by fans, it has aged like fine wine, and is my personal favorite. Trone sits at 495k sales and will probably go diamond next week.

in 2018 Booba started beefing with Damso, and revived his other beefs, including Rohff, Kaaris, and Lafouine, encountering Kaaris at Orly airport and fighting his team, and viceversa, which was absolutely huge in France. Meme event for the ages. Booba did some weeks of prison and proposed an MMA fight, which Kaaris agreed to, but then backed down. He also appeared in Sale Mood (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAqATW60uFM), and Madrina (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcKXgYlnM7A) both diamond.

In 2019 Booba dropped loosies PGP (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kf_J-QAdH24), Arc-en-Ciel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1wbWhMOCaQ) and GLAIVE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqNEmR5uQCM), which disses Damso, and whose video set was shot by. All these songs have 25+M streams. Booba kept beefing everyone and started deteriorating his image with the public, who now considered him childish and immature. He features in diamond single Médicament (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhO3INtwFwA)

In 2020 Booba lost his 5m follower Instagram account after posting rapper Sofiane's sextape. Booba is now clashing absolutely everybody. He releases JAUNÉ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2b0_aDX98h0) and appears in Blanche (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k_ddK4wVXM). Subject of many controversies, his public image deteriorates every time more, but he remains in the spotlight. He posts a dick pick, gets banned again from Instagram and insults everybody. At the end of the year Booba announces his tenth studio album, and drops two singles 5G and Azerty which didn't do so well, but still went number one and three respectively.

As a teaser he releases number one single RATPI WOLRD (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqsuLmkDeI8) a Barbie girl remix, positively received. And finally, yesterday the album dropped. I recommend you guys listen to it all, especially after listening to all the songs of this post. He had like 500k tweets yesterday and this is about to debut with mad numbers, after he nailed his promo.

What an end to a legendary career, whose only comparisons could be Jay Z, and Eminem. Booba is the goat of French rap, and with ULTRA he says goodbye. A pioneer in gansgta rap, autotune, trap and the new dancehall/reggaeton zumba tracks, Booba leaves as an icon, unrivaled for 26 years (kinda hasn't been the case for the last 4 years but whatever) and as the greatest of all time.

Chambers first got nat'l attention with this viral clip where he gave an impassioned speech in support of changing the name of a high school named for Robert E. Lee and calling out a school board member who was shopping online.

Gary Chambers Jr. is best known for a viral moment this year where he castigated the Baton Rouge school board for not caring about the brutal legacy of the Confederacy in the modern-day city, but he's been an activist in the Baton Rouge community for years, including publishing a magazine beginning in 2012, The Rouge Collection, about the Black experience in the city, though it's now defunct. The magazine endorsed in most political races, and as far as well can tell, always picked the more progressive option, including Bernie for president in 2016. The magazine had folded by 2020, but Chambers personally backed him again. Chambers was prominently involved in 2017 protests against the government's indifference to the police homicide of Alton Sterling, a Black man. Chambers was even arrested at one such demonstration.

On March 6, 2020, Lil Uzi Vert released his second studio album, Eternal Atake. What are your thoughts on the album? I thought it actually aged well in the short time it's been out. A lot of people complained that it just sounded like basic trap music, but I found the production to be really interesting and it was a fun album to listen to.

I do think that people had their expectations set too high, and if it had released in 2018 like planned it would have been received far better. Favorite tracks: Bigger Than Life, Chrome Heart Tags, Homecoming, Venetia, and Baby Pluto. Least favorite tracks: You Better Move, Prices (I know y'all gonna hate me for that one), I'm Sorry. The floor is really high on this album for me, even my least favorites are songs I can still bump every once in a while, while the best are still in my daily rotation.

Since we haven't had a Secret Santa mixtape/playlist exchange in awhile, I thought I'd make one even though it's already March. I've already posted this in some recent Daily Discussion threads but we decided a top-level post was appropriate. Anyone is welcome to participate, but please don't sign up if you don't intend on actually sending a playlist to the user you are matched with.

Here's how it's going to go:

  1. Sign up by entering your username with this link. Make sure you spell your username correctly. You'll need a Google account to sign up for the exchange to prevent multiple entries. The deadline to sign up is March 9th.

  2. On March 10th, a week before St. Patrick's Day, you'll be sent a random username.

  3. Sometime before St. Patrick's Day (March 17th), send that user a playlist. This can be done by either sending artist/title names, a Spotify/Apple Music/YouTube playlist, etc. If you're not sending with a streaming service but want to make some custom playlist cover art, host it on imgur and link that too.

  4. There will be a discussion thread on St. Patrick's Day to discuss the results and talk about what you've found through the exchange.

Suggested Playlist Guidelines

  • Keep it around 8-12 songs.
  • Songs don't have to be from this year.
  • Songs don't have to be obscure, but avoid including artists that are very clearly mainstream.
  • Making some dope custom artwork for the playlist is highly encouraged but not a must. It'd be cool though, and you don't want to not be cool.
  • Your playlist should consist of mostly, if not completely, hiphop. After all, this is a hiphop subreddit.
  • Users who don't send a playlist to their match will be publicly shamed.
