Spilligion is the fourth overall collaborative album by the collective, Spillage Village, following the Bears Like This trilogy. The album title was announced in March of 2020. The group members include EarthGang, JID, Hollywood JB, Jurdan Bryant, Mereba, 6lack, and Benji.

Just a bit of a break from the norm". Half the songs have 808 drums while the other songs have live production. In terms of production, there was a different approach to making the beats; that can also be said about writing the songs. With soul, as a driving force, the idea was to tap into rhythms and harmonies we normally don't.

For example, in making Oshun was a lot different from making Baptize. For Baptize I made the bulk of the beat at first. The sample, kick, and snare pattern and Olu verse were already established before we took it to another studio where it was completed with JID and Wowgr8 verses along with Olu's drum fills, screeches, and entire second part that closes the song. However, Oshun came from scratch. JID hummed a melody and suggested a drum pattern that became the drum and acoustic guitar vamp started by me and Olu.

We all agreed the beat needed to switch up. Hollywood JB, Benji, and Olu created a new sequence with drums, electric guitar, and bass. With that we had an A and B section to go back and forth with. Olu then reached out to Ricardo to additional electric guitar giving the track a bit more warmth.

Experimenting in music creates open studio sessions with lots of room for ideas, questions, and debates. When the music is finished, then you can listen in a different way.

If you have any production questions about the album feel free to ask!

The Case for Kendrick Lamar Being the Greatest of All Time

Posted: 02 Oct 2020 08:29 PM PDT

https://preview.redd.it/o9i0r0tdusq51.jpg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3f1a3d60e95552cc19c522675d722592a119679

Let's start really quick here by saying that I am a hip hop fan. Not a super fan, not a scholar, a fan. Have been a fan for most of my life. I am also not a journalist or a writer so don't expect copious amounts of citations. That said, here's my case for why Kendrick Lamar may be considered the greatest rapper of all time.

Criteria

In my estimation, you can judge the greatness of an emcee by three general criteria; one; charisma, two; technicality and three; narrative ability. Lets dive into the meaning of each.

Charisma

This is everything that the emcee is capable of communicating outside of the actual words they're saying. It's their bravado, their conviction, their confidence, authenticity, even vulnerability. It's something that's difficult to define acutely, but you know it when you hear it. Examples of Emcees who are top of this list would be the likes of Tupac, Ice Cube Jay-Z, Big L, Biggie, Prodigy, Killer Mike, Phonte, Mos Def, Andre 3000, Pimp C, Mac Dre, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Snoop Dogg. I'll even throw Drake and Quavo in there though that might upset some of you. In short, is this someone who you are drawn to? This is certainly the most important quality when thinking about the emcees' ability to be commercially successful. If only for the fact that so many rappers manage to become very successful based on this quality alone.

Technicality

This is the emcees' ability in the nuanced and highly challenging craft of rhyme, rhythm, word-play, double entendre and syntax. Some rappers can fit a mind-boggling amount of rhyme, double entendre, and alliteration within two bars let alone a verse or a song. Top of mind for greats under this category are the likes of Nas, Big Pun, Kool G Rap, Elzhi, Royce Da 5'9, Lupe Fiasco (who has a sort of superhuman capability in this category), Eminem, Lil Wayne, Crooked I, R.A. the Rugged Man, MF Doom, Tech N9ne, Earl Sweatshirt, Inspectah Deck. A subset of hip hop fans and rappers would likely argue that this is the one and only criteria for judging an emcee. Which, in a certain sense, may be true.

Narrative Ability

This isn't just the emcees' ability to tell a linear story, though that is most definitely a part of it. It's more than that. Can this emcee explore an idea? Can they follow that idea to its logical conclusion? Can they share a unique perspective and provide a depth of meaning that penetrates the hearts and minds of their audience? Can they do this over the course of a track? Can they do this over the course of an album? Can they do this over the course of a body of work? If charisma is the key to commercial success, narrative ability is the key to true greatness. This applies not just to rappers, but to all artists regardless of medium.

Additional possible categories:

Musicality

Certainly the ability to simply make good music is a part of all of this but that should be a given, hip hop music is after all… music. Picking beats would fall under this category but again I think that this really is just a given, if the music isn't good none of the rest really matters.

Output

This is another component I think is really just a given and should be considered as more of an asterisk than a category. It's pretty simple, how do you judge the above categories without having much to judge?

The Greats

If we take a look at the rappers who are consistently in the GOAT conversation we see that they all are easily between a 7 or 10 in each of the categories above.

Tupac: Easily a 10 in charisma and 9 in narrative ability. His technicality is where he's lower, he's likely a 7 in that area. Tupac's primary concern was with his message and he coated that message in one of the greatest on mic personalities the world has ever seen.

Jay-Z: An easy 10 in charisma. More of an 8 in technicality but I don't think for lack of ability. Rather, more likely because highly technical rappers very rarely see the kind of mass appeal Jay Z was and is interested in. Last, I'd say about an 8.5 in narrative ability. He's certainly able to carry a linear story over a single track but in terms of real deep contemplative insightful perspective, he's great, but not the best.

Biggie: If Pac and Jay are a 10 in charisma then Biggie is probably an 11. He's arguably the most charismatic emcee of all time) followed by a 9 in technicality and 8 in narrative ability. He's plagued unfortunately but a very very short career stopped tragically.

Nas: In technicality he's a pioneer and really beyond any scoring system for that reason, most of the other highly technical emcees don't exist without his influence. That said, for the sake of this essay, we'll say in technicality he's a 10. He's about a 9.5 in narrative ability. In charisma he's probably a 7. His charisma really is mostly wrapped up in his ability in the other two categories.

Eminem: Eminem often ends up at the top of the GOAT list. And it's difficult to argue. He's easily a 9 in charisma, 10 in technicality and 8.5 in narrative. Eminem is hurt by his hit or miss body or work. That said, he will likely always remain in the GOAT conversation for his unbelievable technicality and often raw vulnerability which caused him to be one of the most influential emcees of all time. He falls slightly in narrative simply because while he is capable of telling a great and compelling story, the stories he tells often provide little in the way of introspection or insight.

Andre 3000: Andre is often brought up in this conversation as a sort of dark horse. And when we really look at it objectively, it's hard to argue his dominance in all three categories. How is he less than a 10 in charisma? How is he less than a 10 in technicality? How in God's name is he less than a 10 in narrative ability? How? The thing that hurts Andre, and I would sadly argue in reality puts him at a 9.5 in all three categories is his output. You could apply this also to Biggie, but really I think his absolute undisputed dominance in the charisma category prevents him from ever being out of the GOAT conversation. That said, Outkast has given us many of the greatest albums in history and Andre many of the greatest verses, but there really just isn't enough material to make him the undisputed GOAT.

GOATS of Obscurity: There are definitely some emcees who many have at the top of their GOAT list and in reality there are strong arguments to be made for many of them. The only real argument against them is their appeal, which in and of itself is a weak argument. These are the MF Dooms, Tech N9nes, Myka 9s, Aesop Rocks, there are a lot. Now, appeal is a weak argument on it's own but impact is not. Many of the GOATs of obscurity see their impact in the generations of rappers who take what they've done and manage to package it in a more accessible way. Or in the case of these obscure emcees being too ahead of their time, their influencees manage to reach the world when it's ready. Kendrick Lamar has noted before the influence of the freestyle fellowship collective on his style and it's pretty obvious how much he really was influenced by those rappers, while Most Hip Hop fans probably couldn't name you a single member of that collective. So, simply pu,t their direct influence isn't felt in the masses of Hip Hop fans and that hurts them. The reality regarding the GOATs of obscurity is this; they'll never be in the GOAT conversations because Hip Hop music as it stands today and has been for, at this point the majority of its existence, is a mass market genre. But, that said, among elite Hip Hop fans and among rappers themselves these obscure GOATS will always be a part of the conversation.

Kendrick Lamar:

I remember the first Kendrick song I heard. I can't remember the year but it was maybe 6-9 months before Section 80 was released. The song was called 'Ignorance is Bliss'. If you're a K Dot fan and have never heard this song, do yourself a favor and pull it up. I remember hearing the way he rode the beat, the technicality of his rhyme schemes, the message of the song and ideas he was exploring. I immediately knew, like many at the time, that this was something different, something really really special. From there I was hooked, I listened to 'overly dedicated' on repeat for months. When section 80 was released I was on the floor with my headphones, laying down listening the day it came out. And such has been my ritual as each new installment in Kendrick's body of work has been released.

Let's state at the outset that we're still in the relatively early stage of K Dot's career when compared to Nas, Jay-Z, Pac etc. That said, what he's already managed to accomplish in his short tenure is nothing short of incredible. Let's look at the stats.

Charisma: Kendrick is an Easy 10. From his deep sincere confidence, willingness to battle, and deep profound vulnerability that is unmatched, he cannot be less than a 10.

Technicality: In this category he's an easy 9. If technicality was just creativity as it relates to cadences he would be an 11. And I believe he sacrifices some of his technical ability in order to be more accessible. I think he places more importance on his ability to impact his audience through his message than through wowing them with his technical prowess.

Narrative Ability: This is where the meat of the argument for his GOAT status lays. With regard to narrative ability, he's not a 10, he's in a league of his own. With regard to deep and profound contemplation of his experience and the experience of those around him and mining those mountains for gems of wisdom he stands with the great rappers and also the great songwriters of all genres. And with the great authors, great poets, great painters, indeed all of the great artists of the world. Kendrick Lamar doesn't carry a single idea or story over a song, which many rappers have done before him, he carries it over an album and arguably over his entire body of work to date.

Section 80 could have been a collection of made-for-radio songs, his first studio offering. It was instead a deep and profound reflection on himself and people around him. Each of the characters in his world drawn with love, concern, understanding and frightening precision.

On good kid m.A.A.d. City, Kendrick could have simply told a linear narrative of he and his friends spending a night out causing mayhem but he didn't do that. Each piece of the story he broke apart and asked the hardest possible questions of all the people involved, most of which himself.

On TPAB, he may have taken time to discuss his life after finally escaping his maad city. Instead, he individually unwrapped each part of that experience, of being pushed, being pulled, forgetting, being reminded. Exploring who he is, who he was, where he went and who he left behind. And in each and every part of that story he is as raw and vulnerable as possible but not for the sake of vulnerability, for the sake of meaning.

Finally, on DAMN, for which he won a Pulitzer prize, he explores the idea that he's not really in control. That everything is determined. By ancestry? By experience? By choices? By God? He doesn't give us an answer, he presents us with frightening, ear ringing questions.

Kendrick is interested in fate. He's interested in what causes us to be who we are and how we are. Is it the generation we're born into? Is it the environment in which we are raised? Is it the experience and choices of our predecessors? The ethos of our greater cultures and nations? Or is it predetermined? With little diversion, nearly every track on every album of Kendrick Lamar seeks to answer and give insight to these questions. We've rarely seen an artist who, with such deftness and precision, identifies the core of each and every one of his experiences and then communicates it to us, his audience, in a way that not only is a gift to himself and his soul, but a gift to anyone willing to listen. A great Sufi sage once wrote that the entire world is meaning set up in images. What makes Kendrick great is this, he takes images and excavates them for meaning.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Kendrick Lamar is the greatest of all time.

[DISCUSSION] What are some of the best and worst uses of comedians and actors on Hip Hop and R&B albums? How do you feel about the concept generally?

Posted: 02 Oct 2020 02:10 PM PDT

Actor/Comedian skits

Morgan Freeman appeared on today's Savage Mode 2 release.

His intro on Snitches & Rats was particularly great, especially the end:

The difference is, at least a snitch is human, but a rat is a fuckin' rat, period

B.o.B also featured Morgan Freeman on his album Strange Clouds on the song Bombs Away

I think I much prefer for example DeRay Davis doing the Bernie Mac impression on College Dropout and Late Registration skits.

I think milo's use of John Witherspoon's Def Comedy Jam bits on budding ornithologists are weary of tired analogies was really cool too.

Aminé's Limbo has some interludes (one is Kobe) from Jak Knight (comedian who's tight with Zack Fox, recommend this episode of Yeah But Still with them on it) which are dope and his use on Rickey Thompson (The guy from this video) on some previous songs on ONEPOINTFIVE

On the Bad Meets Evil album, they sample Mike Epps on I'm On Everything. T.I. also used Mike Epps in an interlude on King and Gucci Mane used him on The State vs. Radric Davis (Toliet Bowl Shawty).

Hannibal Buress has also done this a bunch. He notably raps on Open Mike Eagle's Doug Stamper and Quelle Chris & Jean Grae's Ohsh and he intros The Cool Kids' comback album *Special Addition Grandmaster Deluxe. He introduces Statik Selektah's Lucky 7 album

Anthont Jesilnik does the skits (1, 3, 2) on Your Old Droog's PACKS. Your Old Droog also has an EP called Kinison, which makes fun of Sam Kinison who hated rap music and was racist maybe.

Quelle Chris & Jean Grae's album featured interludes from John Hodgeman, Michael Che, and Nick Offerman.

Open Mike Eagle's latest music video features Paul F Tompkins

Wale used clips from Seinfeld on his Mixtape About Nothing and More About Nothing tapes and was able to get Seinfeld to appear on Album About Nothing

Dave Chappelle is on the intro to Quality by Talib Kweli and tells a story on Detroit 2 by Big Sean

Comedian/Actor Rappers

Sometimes comedians will even make their own rap songs. Hannibal Buress has Judge Judy and Gibberish Rap

Awkafina unfortunately exists as a rapper

Zack Fox has made a few rap songs (The Bean Kicked In, Square Up, 100, Jesus Is The One and done features with Father (Family Function).

Comedian Michael Dapaah has a character Big Shaq, who blew up off of Mans Not Hot, a parody of road rap, specifically 67's Lets Durk featuring Giggs.

A group of YouTubers started TMG (Tiny Meat Gang) and make rap comedy songs

Das Racist is a very funny rap group, unclear whether they're joking or not

Lil Dicky has made a career and a TV show about being a comedy rapper.

The Lonely Island, an SNL creation, have put out several albums and garnered features from artists like Rihanna, Snoop Dogg, T-Pain, and more. They were also able to create a movie Popstar out of it.

Will Smith is a actor rapper.

Ice Cube is a rapper actor

Ice-T is a rapper actor

Childish Gambino is a YT comedian->writer->tv actor->one comedy special->rapper->movie actor

Kid Cudi is rapper->actor

Lakeith Stanfield is a actor->rapper, he has his own songs, does features, and won an award for a song he did in Short Term 12.

Rappers movie cameos

Kanye West and Drake appeared in Anchorman 2

A$AP Rocky and Vince Staples have minor roles in Dope

Kid Cudi apparently is in Bill & Ted Face the Music

Discussion Questions

Do you have any other examples you like or dislike of:

  • Comedians doing skits on a rapper's album
  • Rappers using excerpts of comedy specials in their music
  • Comedian becoming comedy rapper
  • Rapper movie cameos

What do you think about comedians/actors doing skits on albums?

What do you think about comedians and actors doing music as a side project? Would you say it's good for hip hop? Could their be an issue of appropriation and disrespecting the artform? How do we make those distinctions?

Throwback Write-Up #21: Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030

Posted: 01 Oct 2020 08:38 AM PDT

Artist: Deltron 3030

Album: Deltron 3030

Label: 75 Ark

Release Date: May 23, 2000

Background

Deltron 3030, the collaboration of Del, the Automator, and the turntablist Kid Koala, released its self-titled concept album on May 23, 2000. Fresh off his collaboration with the ever-mysterious and untenable Kool Keith, legendary producer Dan the Automator provides the framework of this bleak future. A classic in its own right, Dr. Octagonecologyst helped establish The Automator as a pillar of the underground hip hop community of the 90s. Kid Koala, a turntablist known for his interjections of bizarre and obscure samples, provides an extra layer of scratching and beat changes that elevate the production to an even higher level. An array of B-movie soundbytes and how-to instructions keep the atmosphere light while also fitting well in the cynical, lugubrious universe in which the album takes place.

Before I really get into the track analysis, I need to state how mindblowing the production on this album was and still is to this day. Through this album, my own musical taste broadened and I found other underground artists like MF DOOM, Madlib, J Dilla, to name a few. The meticulous, weird, random samples that weave together to create this SciFi space opera could only work the way they do because of Dan the Automator. Deltron 3030 was an album that tore down the walls of what I thought hip hop could be. I owe a lot of my musical taste to this album and I'm glad I got to write it up on its 20th anniversary. While it might be a cliché concept in 2020, rebels raging against a mega-corporation that controls almost every aspect of the lives of humans was a fairly original idea, particularly framed in the context of battle rappers. While the general concept itself had been done even as early as 1976 on Rush's magnum opus 2112, Deltron Zero and Automator are heroes entirely of their own.

As an aside, I'm going to be skipping the skits as they serve only for worldbuilding. You should absolutely listen to them, in particular "Meet Cleofis Randolph the Patriarch".

Analysis

It's the year, 3030. And here at the Corporate Institutional Bank of Time, we find ourselves reflecting. Finding out that, in fact, we came back. We were always coming back

Damon Albarn, of Blur and Gorillaz fame, begins what would become one of the most influential and acclaimed hip hop collaborations with incredible exhaustion and apathy. His delivery both complements the lush and at times eerie production of Dan the Automator while also starkly contrasting the coming bombastic, at times humorous rhymes laid down by Del tha Funky Homosapien.

The track 3030 opens with an introduction to our two main characters, Deltron Zero and Automator. A grandiose, operatic soundwall carries Deltron as he describes the grim condition the world: Cyber warlords are aggravating abominations/Arm a nation with hatred? We ain't with that….Living in a post-apocalyptic world morbid and horrid/The secrets of the past they hoarded…No mistakes black it's our music we must take back. In many ways, this track parallels the opening track to 2112 titled "Overture/The Temples of Syrinx", plunging the listener into the stark reality and exposing them to the sheer magnitude of antagonism the hero of each album must face. Much the same way the Priests of 2112 have hidden passion and originality from music, the Capitalist overlords of 3030 have taken hip hop and manufactured it to be devoid of soul. Using mech suits, gravity stim packs, and a microphone, Deltron battles underground, spreading hip hop and trying to awaken the world from its proverbial slumber. His mission of fighting against bland, inoffensive, mindless music has been the eternal struggle of the underground hip hop scene since any form of the genre found mainstream success. Almost immediately, he is caught by the government and thrown into a cell. By merely speaking his mind, he is immediately targeted "for the pure verbal, they said my sentence was equivalent to murder". He breaks out of jail and immediately returns to his mech warrior roots, hijacking a mech suit and escaping with the help of his own prodigious rhymes. What follows is Automator and Deltron scheming against the unjust system that has kept them down their entire lives.

It's interesting that in this year of global health crises and years of racial injustice coming to a head I find myself examining this album under a microscope. There's so much imagery within this universe that still rings true 20 years after its release. It's a testament to how intricate and masterfully this project was put together, while also somewhat disheartening that the themes of oppression, racism, and fascism are still just as apparent.

To spread their message, Deltron and Automator realize they must take their skills to the people. They spread a secret message of an upcoming rap battle (The Fantabulous Rap Extravaganza) which is picked up in a full-on advertisement. Fittingly, the track "Things You Can Do" begins with a sampled track repeating "Things you can do, some can't be done", a creed laid down by the government to keep MCs, minorities, and the poor down. In direct opposition to this, the first verse finds our hero laying down just how epic his talent is from the beginning "two-ton mic, leave you tongue-tied" and fervently describing his stance against the system that controls them with manufactured music: "Inhibit bacteria growth, material growth/Impenetrable, incontestable indigestible/Intelligence, never let a computer tell me shit". Deltron's zealous "Fuck You" to the overlords only gains strength as the track continues, with his delivery laiden with increasing amounts of machismo. His off-kilter bars shred the opposing MC. Empowered by this rap battle, Deltron decides to take his battle straight to the source.

Throughout "Positive Contact" Del is continuously escalating his prowess, emboldened by his victories and ultimately able to find a government base, he begins his verbal onslaught. "I'm what you call a legend, dominance with Armageddon/Gives me a warm reception. Deltron Z ebs and flows with the battle, absorbing energy from fallen opponents and gaining more power with each MC and each computer he destroys. Seemingly, his attack is eventually thwarted as the government mounts a response against the rebel operative and Deltron retreats to Mercury. It is here that Deltron tells Automator of his new plans: to devise a virus so infectious and disruptive that the entire government control system is upended.

Global controls will have to be imposed and a world governing body WILL be created to enforce them. Crises precipitate change.

One of the most iconic tracks from the album Virus begins with an ominous decree by the oppressive government that pursues Deltron and Automator. Given the current state of our own world, the bleak odds set up against Del weigh even heavier than when I first heard the track several years ago. The theme is timeless, and fits right into our own world of police brutality, fascism, and political turmoil. Much of this album deals with the oppression of minorities and stifling of those voices. Deltron rallies against this despite insurmountable odds. He waxes poetic about a supervirus that could destroy every computer, with complexity so intricate that no scientist could defeat it. A mid-track skit (sampling Star Trek, no less) seems to indicate the government caught wind of his scheme, with a malicious manifesto: We will not hesitate! We will destroy the Homosapien!. As Del frantically enacts his plan, he describes in detail his plan for the masses to rise up: burn all the terminals, decapitate the corrupt politicians, loot the stores of megacorporations. New Earth has become to cumbersome and Del states it's time they take their fight to the stars.

And then begins my personal favorite track from the album. "Mastermind" finds Del hyping up the genius behind his rebellion: the Automator. A force so deadly and powerful, he reprograms minds with his beats. His logic impress, a hypnotic effect./Ya latent patent you could call it a gift/Man he all in the mix nuclear physicist/Genetically tailored every bit of this stimulus The success Del has found thus far has been on the shoulders of the beats Automator has created. Even describing these beats as symphonies. Infectious, intricate, and inviting, Automator creates the stage upon which Del preaches his message, ending the track by recruiting a new protege.

The album reaches its midpoint with Del and his gang of rouge MCs in the midst of their war against the control system. Throughout the track, Del talks about how his rhymes will free the masses, so much so that other MCs wish they were as influential. Again, Del (real life Del) uses lyrics that could very well apply to his own life, talking about how survival as a black man is at times like a vice squeezing him, with an ever-looming suspicion of those around him that could possibly ruin everything he's built thus far. All the while, he tries to rationalize with himself, stating that he is no different than his proteges. Again, though, his hatred of the system within which he was born takes priority, as he exclaims "Put ***s on the moon and can't pay your burdens". He pushes his followers forward, begging them to keep fighting for a world free of classism, racism, and government control.

Del's frustrations deepen Time Keeps on Slippin' as Damon Albarn makes his second appearance on the album. Bringing along his melodica, Albarn laments on the chorus that time continues to pass him by but no one seems to see it. The entire melody and melodica are a good time capsule into Albarn's music, as Gorillaz self-titled debut album was about to release the following year. The melodica makes its most famous appearance on the track "Clint Eastwood", which is where I first heard Del as a kid. In much the same way I owe a lot of my musical taste to this album's production, Gorillaz was the catalyst for it all. Deltron's assault continues, ramping up to a level where the pillars of civilization begin to fall, and as this world comes tumbling down, Del "remakes the universe every time [he] uses a verse". He defeats MC after MC in front of him, emboldening his cause and laying waste to imitators.

The skit "The News" is an example of propaganda that describes Del as a vicious terrorist and alien invader hellbent on destruction and death. This leads into the next track Turbulence (Remix) where Del retaliates by exposing the seedy, dark truths of life under the current government. "I envision turbulence and murder since it's an everyday occurence", while also stating the casualties and collateral damage are worth it in the end if people can be free. Unfortunately, he also notes his own rebels have become distracted by drugs and no longer dedicate themselves to the cause in the same way as they did so long ago. He is not without self-reflection, going so far as to say his prowess with battle rapping and mech fighting are not hindered by his own drug use since he still believes in his cause. Del attempts to rally his rebels once more, describing the life of the elite. The privileged live in floating cities, far above the common people, who slave away in factories making the technologies that make life for the privileged so easy. Exasperated, the track closes with Del stating aliens did, in fact, attempt to invade Earth in the recent past. But, after seeing how docile and horrible the living conditions were, they could not possibly implement a more controlling system and thus left.

This frustration and burn-out leads Deltron to a rap battle Battlesong which turns into a sequence of battles on different planets. Strikingly, one MC on Pluto even goes so far as the disable the Automator, previously thought to be unstoppable. Fortunately, in an attempt to avenge his comrade, Del lays down a verbal assault by himself, without beats and pummels his opponent into submission. Finally, in a hilarious final battle, Del literally squeezes the brain out of a quadriplegic MC on Earth.

In a celebratory first, Del flies back to Oakland where he succumbs to the very vices he chastised his MC followers for, smoking weed and missing work. Probably the track with the funniest lyrics, we find Del jaded and lazy. I'm sittin' on the porch readin' Cosmopolitan/Peepin' all these dumb hoes with enhanced collagen. He loses his job, and must battle small-time MCs to make money and survive. Ultimately he spots a fine woman and boasts about his past accomplishments as the champion of the Galactic Rhyme Federation to no avail. Much of the narrative stops here, with Del falling prey to the traps that caused his followers to fail. The final track of the album serves as both a bookend of the apathy present in Del's universe as well as a statement on the fed-up attitude Del tha Funky Homosapien possessed on his own career and trajectory at the time.

20 years on, it's easy to see why this album continues to find new fans and is repeatedly named on "certified classics" lists. The impact the production of this album had on several high profile projects that followed (Gorillaz self-titled to name just one) cannot be overstated. It's a staple of underground hip hop and a who's who of the subgenre. If you haven't listened to it before, block out some time and give it a shot. Del's message of whack MCs and pure braggadocious lyricism are a sight to behold and the imagery he paints is vivid and engaging.

Favorite Lyrics

Neuromancer, perfect blend of technology and magic/Use my rapping so you all can see the hazards/Plus entertainment where many are brainless/We cultivated a lost art of study and I brought a buddy/Automator, harder slayer, fascinating combinations/Cyber warlords are aggravating abominations/Arm a nation with hatred? We ain't with that

Questions

-Which albums do you feel drew direct inspiration from this project?

-How do you feel about Deltron Zero's ultimate fate? Knowing Deltron Osiris rises in Event II, does this change your view?

-Why did this album work so much better than Event II?

-Which underground MC do you feel could fit over this beats?

What’s a lyric you heard when you were younger but didn’t understand it until you got older?

For me it's: "Airport atheist, only pray when there's turbulence"- Childish Gambino

And

"I mean damn, did you even see the test? You got D's, muthafucka D's, Rosie Perez"-Kanye West

What are some opportunities that artists blew?

Posted: 01 Oct 2020 08:48 AM PDT

Stolen from /r/popheads

Here's some hip hop/rnb examples from the thread:

For example, I feel like with 'Barbie Dreams' Nicki had an opportunity to get a cute lil viral video if she featured all the male rappers she mentions in the track. At the very least if she was really committed to the puppet theme she should have had a puppet of each of the male artists, it seems like she half-assed it.

Rihanna's Sex With Me charted for 15 weeks despite it not being released as a single, it def could've been another top 10 hit for her, it even went 2x platinum... same with Loveeeeeee Song which also charted for over 10 weeks

Lil Nas X not releasing "Call Me By Your Name" when it was getting hyped up

Trippie Redd not sending his verse in time for Drake's ''God's Plan''
