Posted: 08 Sep 2020 09:09 AM PDT

Rules

Artists qualify if they're never gotten 50 or more upvotes on /r/HipHopHeads (counting features)

Formatting:

Artist - Title

Description: no character minimum but some things that might be good to include: where the rapper is from, what subgenres they might fall into, have cosigns they might have, what their influences are/who they sound like.

Example:

Aaron May - Let Go

17 year old Houston Rapper, biggest influences are J Cole and Nas.

Heavily recommended: If you post a song, listen to another song and comment on it. Otherwise it doesn't rly work that well.

[DISCUSSION] Death Grips - The Powers That B (5 Years Later)

Posted: 08 Sep 2020 08:57 AM PDT

The Powers That B is the fourth studio album, and first double album, by experimental hip hop group Death Grips. The album's first disc, Niggas on the Moon, was released as a free digital download on June 8, 2014. The first disc's instrumentation was performed entirely on a Roland V-Drum kit by drummer Zach Hill and features chopped vocal samples of Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk on every track. The second half, Jenny Death, leaked online on March 19, 2015. It features Nick Reinhart of Tera Melos, and Zach's former high school bandmate, Julian Imsdahl, on guitar and organ respectively. The double album as a whole was officially released via Harvest Records on March 31, 2015.

Niggas on the Moon

Niggas on the Moon received positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from critics, the album received an average score of 70, which indicates "generally favorable reviews", based on 5 reviews. Michael Madden of Consequence of Sound stated: "Niggas on the Moon primarily relies on the band's chaotic, ever-evolving sonic disposition – and as a bonus, we've never heard Ride sound quite like this. It's an exciting proposition." He also described the disc as "an exciting ride" and further wrote: "By virtue of being divisive as all hell, Death Grips have welcomed us back to their jungle."Calum Slingerland of Exclaim! called the first disc "the group's most confounding collection of tracks to date," praising the manic nature of vocalist MC Ride as "a side to the vocalist largely unseen on previous releases." Larry Fitzmaurice for Pitchfork described the disc as "the band's least intense album," and stated: "it's hard to shake the feeling that Death Grips might benefit from a change in aesthetic and conceptual focus... Without new tricks and fresh aggression, Death Grips risk coming across as safe and ordinary, a mess of broken teeth summarily replaced by a gap-toothed smile." Patrick Taylor of RapReviews.com commented that "the songs feel more like eight variations on the same concept than eight distinct tracks."

Jenny Death

Overall, critical reception for Jenny Death was very positive, with responses generally being better than of Niggas on the Moon. On March 16, 2015, "On GP" from the album's second disc, Jenny Death, was awarded a "Best New Track" review on Pitchfork's website. Pitchfork rated the album 8.1/10, calling the album's second half the "strongest material in a while" and that "it's not on the level of their artistic and commercial breakthrough The Money Store, but it will absolutely remind you of why you loved them in the first place." Calum Slingerland of Exclaim! described the lyrical nature of the second disc as "representative of outward action and thought more than internalization," writing that the incorporation of live instruments is a welcome addition alongside the group's aggressive electronics. Addressing the album as a complete release, Slingerland stated that The Powers That B is "a compelling look at the band's ability to work with sounds both minimal and monumental, while containing some of their most riveting lyrical and musical work in recent memory. Consequence of Sound also gave the album a positive review, saying that "some of their best debris-curdling numbers appear here" and also noted their shift in genre, claiming that "It's their most punk album, both musically and in function."

[DISCUSSION] Thundercat - The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam (5 Years Later)

Posted: 08 Sep 2020 07:50 AM PDT

In an interview with Billboard, Thundercat stated that the EP had been conceived while making Flying Lotus' You're Dead!, Kamasi Washington's The Epic, and Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, stating that the four had shared creative ideas for each of their projects. The EP was revealed to be a prelude to Bruner's followup album, Drunk.

Death is the scariest, most certain thing we'll all ever face. As sure as you're reading this, you will die, and you can only hope for a peaceful transition to the other side. Thundercat has been preoccupied with the topic for the past few years: 2013's Apocalypse was shaded by the death of his friend and collaborator, Austin Peralta, and his work on Flying Lotus' You're Dead! helped convey what the spirit might endure as the body passes away.

But while FlyLo used frenetic psych-jazz to conceptualize death, Thundercat takes a reflective stance on The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam, using improvised funk and R&B to mourn. On "Hard Times", Thundercat channels what the soul must feel when death takes hold. By the last song, "Where the Giants Roam", he's at peace with the afterlife, even if the journey is unclear: "Nothing in this world I know/ Can you tell me who you are?" The Beyond continued where You're Dead! left off, when the pain of dying fades and the darkness slowly sets in.

Thundercat's EP helped cement a great year for Lotus' Brainfeeder label. Along with You're Dead!, the bassist appeared frequently on Kamasi Washington's The Epic and Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, two landmark albums that celebrated blackness and kept jazz at the forefront. Thundercat was especially brave on The Beyond, walking through a world many of us don't want to acknowledge and making it sing. —Marcus J. Moore

How Do Certifications work?

When a song has 150,000,000 streams in the US or 1,000,000 sales, an artist can purchase a certification (for around ~$300). You don't automatically get a plaque when you cross the threshold. The label or the artist needs to buy it. Often artists will buy certifications in bulk before they release new music.

I've seen 'Til Infinity (they sold physical copies at Hiero Day last year) and I highly recommend it. It's essentially a breakdown of the album 93 'Til Infinity with stories about how the songs came together, they play original demos, etc., but they but they also tell the entire story of how the Hieroglyphics came to be. They get into Del, Tajai & A-Plus being original members of what would eventually become WC & The M.A.A.D. Circle as high schoolers, their time with Cube when he was a member of C.I.A. (before N.W.A), working with Sir Jinx, Del's days as a member of Da Lench Mob, the bidding war for the Souls of Mischief album, shutting down The Gavin and a lot more. Definitely worth the watch.

Documentary features Phife Dawg, De La Soul, Snoop Dogg, Murs, Shock G, Yasiin Bey, Alchemist, Questlove, 9th Wonder, Killer Mike and many, many more.
